This paper proposes the design of two coordinated wide-area damping controllers (CWADCs) for damping low frequency oscillations (LFOs), while accounting for the uncertainties present in the power system. The controllers based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), respectively, coordinate the operation of different local damping controls such as power system stabilizers (PSSs), static VAr compensators (SVCs), and supplementary damping controllers for DC lines (DC-SDCs). The DNN-CWADC learns to make control decisions using supervised learning; the training dataset consisting of polytopic controllers designed with the help of linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based mixed $H_2/H_\infty$ optimization. The DRL-CWADC learns to adapt to the system uncertainties based on its continuous interaction with the power system environment by employing an advanced version of the state-of-the-art deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm referred to as bounded exploratory control-based DDPG (BEC-DDPG). The studies performed on a 33 machine, 127 bus equivalent model of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system-embedded with different types of damping controls demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed CWADCs. It is ubiquitously accepted that system latency causes a serious problem in an oscillatory stability, especially when it involves with the centralized damping controllers using wide-area input signals. Previously, the latency was assumed to be constant in the centralized controller design and nonlinear time simulation. However, variable latencies, which vary area-to-area depending on the distances between stabilizing devices and control center, inevitably occur in large power systems. Thus, the damping performance may be deteriorated when variable latencies are ignored in the control design. This paper presents an inter-area oscillation damping controller design considering the impact of variable latencies. Selection of suitable stabilizing devices and input signal is conducted by taking variable latencies into account. Stability studies are carried out in IEEE 50-machine 145-bus to analyze an influence of variable latencies on the oscillation damping and the signal selection. The proposed damping controller can achieve desired damping performance as well as robustness against variable latencies, various operating conditions, and severe disturbances. Interarea power oscillation damping enhancement in large interconnected power systems is often accomplished using supplementary controls at the synchronous machines involved and with the use of flexible ac transmission system devices. The power system literature has demonstrated that wide area signals could be more effective than the local signals for these controllers. In some cases where phasor measurement units are used, all the required control signals may not be available. To alleviate these cases, control signals are obtained using estimated signals from a “dynamic state estimator,” and a robust supplementary controller is deployed. In this paper, the cited strategy is illustrated using a static var compensator. The feasibility of the proposed method has been demonstrated on the IEEE 50-generator test system. A modified fruit fly optimization algorithm (MFOA) combined with a probabilistic approach are proposed in this paper to coordinate and optimize the parameters of power system stabilizers (PSSs) and static VAR compensator (SVC) damping controller for improving the probabilistic small-signal stability of power systems with large-scale wind generation, taking into consideration the stochastic uncertainty of system operating conditions. It is generally accepted that there is a threat to the stability of power system with penetration of wind farm. In addition, the stochastic fluctuations of wind generation make PSSs tuning more difficult. In this paper, PSSs and SVC damping controller are employed for suppressing local and inter-area low frequency oscillation. In order to eliminate the adverse effect between PSSs and SVC damping controller, the MFOA based on the probabilistic eigenvalue is applied to coordinate and optimize their parameters. This paper presents the coordinated design of multiple FACTS supplementary damping controllers to improve system small-signal stability. A BMI-based multi-objective multi-model system approach is formulated to solve the robust damping control problem. Two-step method is proposed to determine controller variables. Regional pole placement and control effort optimization are set as the control objectives. An SVC and a TCSC damping controller are designed sequentially with minimized decoupling effort. Selection of the feedback signals for the FACTS damping controllers is realized by evaluating the modal residues of each feedback signal to the system input. To cover multiple inter-area oscillation modes, wide-area decentralized control methodology is proposed and remote feedback signals are selected. Real-time simulation is carried out on real-time digital simulator (RTDS) to test the performance of the proposed controller. With significant investment made in the U.S. in deploying synchrophasor measurement technology, more wide-area measurements will be available and controls based on these signals are likely to be adopted. Communication systems play a critical role in interactive grid control as an indispensable medium to transmit wide-area measurements; however, they are vulnerable to disruptions leading to the risk of destabilizing power systems. This work addresses a critical issue related to engineering resilient cyber-physical systems. The proposed framework utilizes a hierarchical set of wide-area measurements for control and employs channel switching based on mathematical morphology identification to counteract the impact of communication failures on control effectiveness. The proposed control framework incorporating a set of synchronized wide-area measurements is designed to consist of multiple single-input single-output supplementary damping controllers associated with a static VAr compensator. The usage of remote signals obtained from a wide-area measurement system (WAMS) introduces time delays to a wide-area damping controller (WADC), which would degrade system damping and even cause system instability. The time-delay margin is defined as the maximum time delay under which a closed-loop system can remain stable. In this paper, the delay margin is introduced as an additional performance index for the synthesis of classical WADCs for flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices to damp inter-area oscillations. The proposed approach includes three parts: a geometric measure approach for selecting feedback remote signals, a residue method for designing phase-compensation parameters, and a Lyapunov stability criterion and linear matrix inequalities (LMI) for calculating the delay margin and determining the gain of the WADC based on a tradeoff between damping performance and delay margin. Three case studies are undertaken based on a four-machine two-area power system for demonstrating the design principle of the proposed approach, a New England ten-machine 39-bus power system and a 16-machine 68-bus power system for verifying the feasibility on larger and more complex power systems.
