The uncertain nature of renewable energy resources (RERs) and fast demand response lead to recurring voltage violations in the power systems, which causes frequent transformer tap shifting and capacitor switching. Therefore, this paper resorts to the static var compensators (SVCs) to manage the bus voltages based on the multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MA-DRL) algorithm. The proposed scheme includes several system agents and SVC agents to collaboratively adjust the injected reactive power to restrict the bus voltages within the normal range. All the agents are trained centrally and executed separately, which requires minimum communication cost. The IEEE 14-bus system, IEEE 300-bus system, and China 157-node urban power grid are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interarea power oscillation damping enhancement in large interconnected power systems is often accomplished using supplementary controls at the synchronous machines involved and with the use of flexible ac transmission system devices. The power system literature has demonstrated that wide area signals could be more effective than the local signals for these controllers. In some cases where phasor measurement units are used, all the required control signals may not be available. To alleviate these cases, control signals are obtained using estimated signals from a “dynamic state estimator,” and a robust supplementary controller is deployed. In this paper, the cited strategy is illustrated using a static var compensator. The feasibility of the proposed method has been demonstrated on the IEEE 50-generator test system. This letter presents a new enhanced approach to the worst-case design (WCD) of secondary voltage control (SVC) using wide-area measurement system. The design of SVC in transmission grids is posed as a maximum likelihood (ML) problem involving erroneous measured data and an interior-point algorithm is adopted for solving the robust ML optimization problem. With significant investment made in the U.S. in deploying synchrophasor measurement technology, more wide-area measurements will be available and controls based on these signals are likely to be adopted. Communication systems play a critical role in interactive grid control as an indispensable medium to transmit wide-area measurements; however, they are vulnerable to disruptions leading to the risk of destabilizing power systems. This work addresses a critical issue related to engineering resilient cyber-physical systems. The proposed framework utilizes a hierarchical set of wide-area measurements for control and employs channel switching based on mathematical morphology identification to counteract the impact of communication failures on control effectiveness. The proposed control framework incorporating a set of synchronized wide-area measurements is designed to consist of multiple single-input single-output supplementary damping controllers associated with a static VAr compensator.
