Development of appropriate load flow model of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices is an important issue for proper planning, control, and protection of power system. Holomorphic Embedding Load-Flow Method (HELM) is a novel technique for solving load flow nonlinear equations which overcomes the numerical problems faced by traditional iterative techniques. In order to evaluate the effects of FACTS devices in load flow problem by HELM technique, it is necessary to develop HELM modeling of these devices. This paper presents HELM modeling of Thyristor-based FACTS controllers, i.e., Static Var Compensator (SVC), Thyristor Controlled Switched Capacitor (TCSC), Thyristor Controlled Voltage Regulator (TCVR), and Thyristor Controlled Phase Angle Regulator (TCPAR). This paper presents the coordinated design of multiple FACTS supplementary damping controllers to improve system small-signal stability. A BMI-based multi-objective multi-model system approach is formulated to solve the robust damping control problem. Two-step method is proposed to determine controller variables. Regional pole placement and control effort optimization are set as the control objectives. An SVC and a TCSC damping controller are designed sequentially with minimized decoupling effort. Selection of the feedback signals for the FACTS damping controllers is realized by evaluating the modal residues of each feedback signal to the system input. To cover multiple inter-area oscillation modes, wide-area decentralized control methodology is proposed and remote feedback signals are selected. Real-time simulation is carried out on real-time digital simulator (RTDS) to test the performance of the proposed controller. This paper proposes an evolutionary fuzzy lead-lag control approach for coordinated control of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices in a multi-machine power system. The FACTS devices used are a thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) and a static var compensator (SVC), both of which are equipped with a fuzzy lead-lag controller to improve power system dynamic stability. The fuzzy lead-lag controller uses a fuzzy controller (FC) to adaptively determine the parameters of two lead-lag controllers at each control step according to the deviations of generator rotor speeds. This paper proposes an Advanced Continuous Ant Colony Optimization (ACACO) algorithm to optimize all of the free parameters in the FC, which avoids the time-consuming task of parameter selection by human experts. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed evolutionary fuzzy lead-lag controller for oscillation damping control is verified through control of a multi-machine power system and comparisons with other lead-lag controllers and various population-based optimization algorithms. This paper presents an optimal allocation method for flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices for market-based power systems considering congestion relief and voltage stability. The purpose of the FACTS devices installation is to provide benefit for all entities accomplished by both minimizing annual device investment cost and maximizing annual benefit defined as difference between expected security cost (ESC) with and without FACTS devices installation. Different from previous approaches, the proposed method accurately evaluates the annual cost and benefits obtainable by FACTS devices installation by formulating a large-scale optimization problem that contains power flow analyses for a large number of system states representing annual power system operations. In addition, dynamic state transitions caused by specified contingencies are also simulated in the optimization problem to evaluate the effect of FACTS control actions as well as the other coordinated controls. The expected cost consists of operating cost under normal and contingency states along with their related probabilities to occur. Maximizing social welfare is the objective for normal state while minimizing compensations for generations re-scheduling and load shedding as well as maximizing social welfare are the objectives in case of contingency. Although installation cost of FACTS devices is required, they are useful as cost free means, which can reduce effectively the annual costs for generations re-scheduling and load shedding. Motivated by the development of power semiconductor technologies, flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices and their penetration in the field of electrical power systems, an educational challenge in complementing theoretical knowledge with practical experience is recognized. In this paper, the design and implementation of a lab-scale hardware and software setup is presented. Three small-scale devices, including a static VAr compensator (SVC) unit, a transmission line model, and a substation, are developed. The SVC unit is validated by obtaining its operating characteristic. The lab setup is presented as a platform to carry out different experiments related to the SVC operation. Safety considerations in the design are discussed. Steady-state and dynamic analysis are presented showing the consistency between theory and practice. Due to the growth of electricity demands and transactions in power markets, existing power networks need to be enhanced in order to increase their loadability. The problem of determining the best locations for network reinforcement can be formulated as a mixed discrete-continuous nonlinear optimization problem (MDCP). The complexity of the problem makes extensive simulations necessary and the computational requirement is high. An ordinal optimization (OO) technique is proposed in this paper to solve the MDCP involving two types of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices, namely static var compensator (SVC) and thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC), for system loadability enhancement. In this approach, crude models are proposed to cope with the complexity of the problem and speed up the simulations with high alignment confidence. Test results based on a practical power system confirm that the proposed models permit the use of OO-based approach for finding good enough solutions with less computational efforts.
