Ultrasound (US) imaging has high potential in monitoring high-intensity focused US (HIFU) treatment due to its superior temporal resolution. However, US monitoring is often hindered by strong HIFU interference, which overwhelms the echoes received by the imaging array. In this study, a method of Golay-encoded US monitoring is proposed to visualize the imaged object for simultaneous HIFU treatment. It effectively removes HIFU interference patterns in real-time B-mode imaging and improves the metrics of image quality, such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), and contrast ratio (CR). Compared to the pulse-inversion sequence, the N -bit Golay sequence can boost the echo magnitude of US monitoring by another N times and, thus, exhibits higher robustness. Simulations show that a sinusoidal HIFU waveform can be fully eliminated using Golay decoding when the bit duration of the N -bit Golay sequence ( N is the power of 4) coincides with either odd (Case I) or even (Case II) integer multiples of the HIFU quarter period. Experimental results also show that the Golay decoding with Case II can increase the PSNR of US monitoring images by more than 30 dB for both pulse- and continuous-wave HIFU transmissions. The SSIM index also effectively improves to about unity, indicating that the B-mode image with HIFU transmission is visually indistinguishable from that acquired without HIFU transmission. Though Case I is inferior to Case II in the elimination of even-order HIFU harmonic, they together enable a more flexible selection of imaging frequencies to meet the required image resolution and penetration for Golay-encoded US monitoring.

Hadamard-encoded multipulses (HEM) transmit has recently been utilized for tissue background suppression in ultrasound contrast imaging to enhance the contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR). Nonetheless, the second-harmonic component in HEM transmit results in residual tissue background after decoding and, thus, compromises the detection of contrast microbubbles. Theoretically, high-order HEM transmit can produce harmonic-free background but the memory effect, which considers the nonlinear contribution of previous bit waveform into the next one in the progress of harmonic generation, may limit the achievable tissue suppression. In this paper, three possible harmonic-free pairs using time-shifted subtraction (SH1, SH2, and SH3) in the fourth-order Hadamard decoding are analyzed and experimentally compared using hydrophone measurement and B-mode imaging. Moreover, the orthogonal decoding (OD) of HEM transmit is also proposed with pulse-inversion harmonic suppression (PIHS) to remedy memory effect on the tissue background. Results show that SH3, which utilizes the third and fourth rows for decoding, provides the lowest magnitude of tissue background among all possible decoding pairs and performs comparably to the reference PI and amplitude-modulation sequence in terms of CTR. For PIHS-OD, the pulse subtraction effectively removes the harmonic interferences from memory effect and, thus, further improves the CTR by 5.4 dB compared to SH3. For high-order HEM transmit, PIHS-OD can help to eliminate the residual tissue background due to memory effect and is comparable to Hadamard decoding in temporal resolution and possible motion artifacts.

Dual-frequency (DF) transmit waveforms comprise signals at two different frequencies. With a DF transmit waveform operating at both fundamental frequency (f(0)) and second-harmonic frequency (2f(0)), tissue harmonic imaging can be simultaneously performed using not only the conventional 2f(0) second-harmonic signal but also using the f(0 )frequency-difference harmonic signal. Nonetheless, when chirp excitation is incorporated into the DF transmit waveform for harmonic SNR improvement, a particular waveform design is required to maintain the bandwidth of the f(0) harmonic signal. In this study, two different DF chirp waveforms are proposed to produce equal harmonic bandwidth at both the f(0) and 2f(0) frequencies to achieve speckle reduction by harmonic spectral compounding and to increase harmonic SNR for enhanced penetration and sensitivity. The UU13 waveform comprises an up-sweeping f(0) chirp and an up-sweeping 2f(0) chirp with triple bandwidth, whereas the UD11 waveform includes an up-sweeping f(0) chirp and a down-sweeping 2f(0) chirp with equal bandwidth. Experimental results indicate that the UU13 tends to suffer from a high range side lobe level resulting from 3f(0) interference. Consequently, the 2f(0) harmonic envelopes of the UD11 and the UU13 waveforms have compression qualities of 87% and 77%, respectively, when the signal bandwidth is 30%. When the bandwidth increases to 50%, the compression quality of the 2f(0) harmonic envelope degrades to 78% and 54%, respectively, for the UD11 and the UU13 waveforms. The compression quality value of the f0 harmonic envelope remains similar between the two DF transmit waveforms for all signal bandwidths. B-mode harmonic images also show that the UD11 is less contaminated by range side lobe artifacts than is the UU13. Compared with a short pulse with equal bandwidth, the UD11 waveform not only preserves the same spatial resolution after compression but also improves the image SNR by about 10 dB. Moreover, the image contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), defined as the ratio of the mean to the standard deviation of image intensity in the speckle region, can be increased from 1.0 to about 1.2 when DF spectral compounding is performed. Therefore, it is concluded that the UD11 waveform is a potential solution for chirp-encoded DF harmonic imaging.

Barium titanate-based microwave dielectrics usually require relatively high temperatures to sinter, which prevents the use of base metals such as copper for electrodes. In this work, BaTi(4)O(9) microwave dielectric ceramics co-fired with copper electrodes are made possible by adding B-Si-Ba- Zn-O glass to induce liquid-phase sintering at sufficiently low temperature and in reduced atmosphere. The microstructures and electric properties of the BaTi(4)O(9) ceramics thus obtained are carefully examined and studied. Proper glass composition may significantly facilitate mass transportation in the low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) material, resulting in better densification without serious degradation of electric properties. Although the B2O3/SiO2 ratio enhances the glass mobility during sintering, the BaO/ZnO ratio contributes to the chemical affinity of glass to BaTi(4)O(9) ceramics. In addition, various Ba-Ti-O phases with different Ba/Ti ratios may be found in the specimen through the X-ray diffraction patterns when the BaO/ZnO ratio is varied. If the BaO/ZnO ratio is high and the glass flows easily in the material, the Ba(4)Ti(13)O(30) phase is formed. If the BaO/ZnO ratio is low and the glass flows easily in the material, the BaTi(6)O(13) phase appears. We find that glass-induced Ba(4)Ti(13)O(30) transformation may significantly decrease Qxf values in the BT4-BSBZ materials. Therefore, the appropriate glass composition must be selected to ensure the phase stability of dielectrics to achieve the best performance possible.

Using software for beamforming in ultrasound systems provides high flexibility, and the large number of computations required in a software-based system can be performed in real time on a PC. However, the very large data transfer rate required from the ultrasound front-end to the PC host for real-time operation is a bottleneck which cannot be overcome without appropriate compression. Previous studies have examined JPEG compression of ultrasound RF channel data, but the schemes do not exploit temporal redundancy between adjacent frames. This study utilized MPEG technology to process the ultrasound RF data to increase the compression efficiency. Our results indicate that MPEG compression generally provides a better compression ratio than does JPEG compression. As an example, the compression ratio of MPEG compression in an 8-bit channel A/D data under 5 μm interframe displacement is smaller than 0.13, thus allowing real-time data transfer requirements to be met. Moreover, the compression efficiency for motions in different directions is shown to be highly dependent on the frame-to-frame correlation.

This report describes a system that utilizes a single high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) transducer for both the localization and ablation of arteries with internal diameters of 0.5 and 1.3 mm. In vitro and in vivo tests were performed to demonstrate both the imaging and ablation functionalities of this system. For imaging mode, pulsed acoustic waves (3 cycles for in vitro and 10 cycles for in vivo tests, 2 MPa peak pressure) were emitted from the 2-MHz HIFU transducer, and the backscattered ultrasonic signal was collected by the same transducer to calculate Doppler shifts in the target region. The maximum signal amplitude of the Doppler shift was used to determine the location of the target vessel. The operation mode was then switched to the therapeutic mode and vessel occlusion was successfully produced by high-intensity continuous HIFU waves (12 MPa) for 60 s. The system was then switched back to imaging mode for residual flow to determine the need for a second ablation treatment. The new system might be used to target and occlude unwanted vessels such as vasculature around tumors, and to help with tumor destruction., (© 2011 IEEE)

Golay-encoded excitation in combination with the third harmonic (3f₀) transmit phasing is examined for both signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR) improvements in harmonic imaging of contrast microbubbles. To produce the cancellation pair of tissue harmonic signal in 3f₀ transmit phasing, the phase of the bit waveform is properly designed for both the fundamental and the 3f₀ transmit signals to provide the Golay encoding of the received harmonic responses. Results indicate that the proposed Golay excitation can effectively suppress the tissue harmonic amplitude to increase CTR. Meanwhile, the SNR of the contrast harmonic signal also improves because of the elongated waveform of Golay excitation. Nevertheless, the generation of marked range side-lobes of the bubble region would degrade the achievable SNR improvement and the image contrast, especially when the bit of Golay excitation increases. The range side-lobes could result from the nonlinear resonance of the microbubbles that interferes with the phase modulation of the Golay encoding.

Sub-harmonic imaging techniques have been shown to provide a higher contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR) at the cost of relatively low signal intensity from ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs). In this study, we propose a method of dual-frequency excitation to further enhance the CTR of subharmonic imaging. A dual-frequency excitation pulse is an amplitude-modulated waveform which consists of two sinusoids with frequencies of f₁ (e.g., 9 MHz) and f₂ (e.g., 6 MHz) and the resulting envelope component at (f₁ - f₂) (e.g., 3 MHz) can serve as a driving force to excite the nonlinear response of UCAs. In this study, the f₂, at twice of the resonance frequency of UCAs, is adopted to efficiently generate a sub-harmonic component at half of the f₂ frequency, and f₁ is included to enhance the high-order nonlinear response of UCAs at the sub-harmonic frequency. The second- and third-order nonlinear components resulting from the envelope component would spectrally overlap at the sub-harmonic frequency when f₁ and f₂ are properly selected. We further optimize the generation of the sub-harmonic component by tuning the phase terms between second- and third-order nonlinear components. The results show that, with dual-frequency excitation, the CTR at sub-harmonic frequency improves compared with the conventional tone-burst method. Moreover, the CTR changes periodically with the relative phase of the separate frequency component in the dual-frequency excitation, leading to a difference of as much as 9.1 dB between the maximal and minimal CTR at 300 kPa acoustic pressure. The echo produced from the envelope component appears to be specific for UCAs, and thus the proposed method has the potential to improve both SNR and CTR in sub-harmonic imaging. Nevertheless, the dual-frequency waveform may suffer from frequency-dependent attenuation that degrades the generation of the envelope component. The deviation of the microbubble's resonance characteristics from the selection of dual-frequency transmission may also decrease the CTR improvement.

Ultrasound nonlinear imaging using microbubble-based contrast agents has been widely investigated. Nonetheless, its contrast is often reduced by the nonlinearity of acoustic wave propagation in tissue. In this paper, we explore the use of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) in the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) for possible contrast improvement. The HHT is designed for analyzing nonlinear and nonstationary data, whereas EMD is a method associated with the HHT that allows decomposition of data into a finite number of intrinsic modes. The hypothesis is that the nonlinear signal from microbubbles and the tissue nonlinear signal can be better differentiated with EMD and EEMD, thus making contrast improvement possible. Specifically, we tested this method on pulse-inversion nonlinear imaging, which is generally regarded as one of the most effective nonlinear imaging methods. The results show that the contrast-to-tissue ratios at the fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies were improved by 10.2 and 4.3 dB, respectively, after EEMD. Nonetheless, image artifacts also appeared, and hence further investigation is needed before EMD and EEMD can be applied in practical applications of ultrasound nonlinear imaging.

Tissue background suppression is essential for harmonic detection of ultrasonic contrast microbubbles. To reduce the tissue harmonic amplitude for improvement of contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR), the method of third harmonic (3f(0)) transmit phasing uses an additional 3f(0) transmit signal to provide mutual cancellation between the frequency-sum component and the frequency-difference component of tissue harmonic signal. Chirp excitation can further improve the SNR in harmonic imaging without requiring an excessive transmit pressure and thus reduce potential bubble destruction. However, for effective suppression of tissue harmonic background in 3f(0) transmit phasing, the 3f(0) chirp waveform has to be carefully designed for the generation of spectrally matched cancellation pairs over the entire second harmonic band. In this study, we proposed a chirp waveform suitable for the method of 3f(0) transmit phasing, the different-bandwidth chirp signal (DBCS). With the DBCS waveform, the frequency-difference component of tissue harmonic signal becomes a chirp signal similar to its frequency-sum counterpart. Thus, the combination of the DBCS waveform with the 3f(0) transmit phasing can markedly suppress the tissue harmonic amplitude for CTR improvement together with effective SNR increase of contrast harmonic signal. Our results indicate that, as compared with the conventional Gaussian pulse, the DBCS waveform can provide 6-dB improvement of SNR in 3f(0) transmit phasing with a CTR increase of 3 dB. Nevertheless, the limitation of available transmit bandwidth and the frequency-dependent attenuation can degrade the performance of the DBCS waveform in tissue suppression. The design of the DBCS waveform is also applicable to other dual-frequency imaging techniques that rely on the harmonic generation at the difference frequency.

Stimulating high-frequency nonlinear oscillations of ultrasound contrast agents is helpful to distinguish microbubbles from background tissues. Nevertheless, inefficiency of such oscillations from most commercially available contrast agents and intense attenuation of the resultant high-frequency harmonics limit microbubble detection with high-frequency ultrasound. To avoid this high-frequency nature, we devised and explored a dual-frequency difference excitation technique to induce efficiently low-frequency, rather than high-frequency, nonlinear scattering from microbubbles by using high-frequency ultrasound. The proposed excitation pulse is comprised of 2 high-frequency sinusoids with frequency difference subject to the microbubble resonance frequency. Its envelope, with frequency being the difference between the 2 frequencies, is used to stimulate nonlinear oscillation of microbubbles for the consonant low-frequency harmonic generation, whereas high-imaging resolution is retained because of narrow high-frequency transmit beams. Hydrophone measurements and phantom experiments of speckle-generating flow phantoms were performed to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed technique. The results show that, especially when the envelope frequency is near the microbubbleiquests resonance frequency, the envelope of the proposed excitation pulse can induce significant nonlinear scattering from microbubbles, the induced nonlinear responses tend to increase with the pulse pressures, and up to 26 dB and 36 dB contrast-to-tissue ratios with second- and fourth-order nonlinear responses, respectively, can be obtained. Potential applications of this method include microbubble fragmentation and cavitation with high-frequency ultrasound.

Generation of tissue harmonic signals during acoustic propagation is based on the combined effect of two different spectral interactions of the transmit signal. One produces harmonic whose frequency is the sum of transmit frequencies. The other results in harmonic at difference frequency of the transmit signals. Both the frequency-sum component and the frequency-difference component are sensitive to the phase of their constitutive spectral signals. In this study, a novel approach for modifying the amplitude of tissue harmonic signal is proposed based on phasing these two components to achieve either harmonic enhancement or suppression. Both experiments and simulations were performed to investigate the effects of 3f0 transmit phasing on tissue harmonic generation. Results indicate that the relative phasing between the frequency-sum component and the frequency-difference component markedly changes the amplitude of the second harmonic signal. For harmonic enhancement, approximate 6 dB increase of second harmonic amplitude can be achieved while the lateral harmonic beam pattern also is improved as compared to conventional situations in which only the frequency-sum component is considered. For harmonic suppression, the second harmonic signal also could be significantly reduced by about 11 dB when the frequency-difference component is out of phase with the frequency-sum component. Hence, the method of 3f0 transmit phasing has potentials for both improving signal-to-noise ratio in tissue harmonic imaging and enhancing image contrast in contrast-agent imaging by suppression of tissue harmonic background.

Pulse-inversion-based fundamental imaging was experimentally investigated for the enhancement of contrast detection. The pulse-inversion technique involves two firings with inverted waveforms. When the returning echoes from the two firings are summed, the residue signal is limited to even-order harmonics for tissue. However, when the returning echoes are from microbubbles, the fundamental signal is not completely cancelled because the reaction of the bubbles under compression is different from that under rarefaction. Thus, with the application of pulse-inversion technique, the fundamental signal can be used to enhance the contrast-to-tissue ratio. In this paper, B-mode, pulse-inversion-based fundamental images were constructed with various transmit waveforms. Motion artifacts also were studied. The results indicate that the contrast-to-tissue ratio was significantly enhanced compared to that obtained using either conventional, fundamental imaging or second-harmonic imaging. Longer transmit pulses resulted in a better signal-to-noise ratio, but did not noticeably affect the nonlinear response of the bubbles. In addition, the optimal ratio of the magnitude of the positive pulse to that of the negative pulse was unity, in terms of avoiding the uncancelled, third-order response in the fundamental frequency range. It also was found that the pulse-inversion fundamental technique is highly sensitive to tissue motion because the fundamental tissue signal is not cancelled when motion is present.

Motion artifacts of the pulse inversion technique were studied for finite amplitude distortion-based harmonic imaging. Motion in both the axial and the lateral directions was considered. Two performance issues were investigated. One is the harmonic signal intensity relative to the fundamental intensity and the other is the potential image quality degradation resulting from spectral leakage. A one-dimensional (1-D) correlation-based correction scheme also was used to compensate for motion artifacts. Results indicated that the tissue harmonic signal is significantly affected by tissue motion. For axial motion, the tissue harmonic intensity decreases much more rapidly than with lateral motion. The fundamental signal increases for both axial and lateral motion. Thus, filtering is still required to remove the fundamental signal, even if the pulse inversion technique is applied. The motion also potentially decreases contrast resolution because of the uncancelled spectral leakage. Also, it was indicated that 1-D motion correction is not adequate if nonaxial motion is present.

The electromechanical characteristics of an asymmetric piezoelectric/elastic laminated actuator are investigated by electroelasticity and experiments. The axial expansion-bending coupled motion of the system is separated into quasi-axial expansion and quasi-bending by its physical significance of vibration modes. General formulation of calculations for the mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical characteristics of the structure are presented via parametric analysis. Finally, the displacement sensitivity and the frequency response of displacement and electrical current are experimentally measured for this piezoelectric/elastic laminated specimen. Close agreement between theoretical and experimental results confirms the validity of the theory.

The dynamic characteristics of a piezoelectric laminate cantilever structure treated as an actuator are analyzed by electroelasticity. General formulation of calculations for displacement sensitivity, electric current, electromechanical coupling coefficients, and results from parametric analyses are presented for axial expansion/contraction, transverse bending, and expansion/contraction-bending coupled motion. The frequency response of displacement and electrical current and the displacement sensitivity were experimentally measured. Close agreement between theoretical and experimental results confirms validity of the theory.
