This study is motivated by the fact that localization in millimeter wave(mmWave) Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication becomes a more critical problem because both the terminals of the communication link are in motion. The positional awareness merely based on GPS or local sensors has an error margin of around 10 meters, which can worsen in uncertain real-time conditions such as road topology and highway traffic. The paper analyses the relation between vehicle dynamics, beamforming, and beam alignment for highly directive antennas. When the subsystem models presented in this paper are taken into consideration, the joint vehicle dynamics-beamforming approach will optimize the link connectivity and SNR. The vehicle dynamics model is designed to be more realistic considering the non-linear acceleration based on the throttle-brake jerks due to induced noises. The Unscented Kalman Filter based prediction subsystem predicts the alignment values even during non-linear acceleration and jerks. This paper presents a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-assisted full-duplex (FD) cooperative spectrum sharing protocol to achieve full-rate at a cell-edge primary user, where the secondary receiver helps the primary network relay the information to the cell-edge primary user. Unlike other FD cooperative schemes, the FD relay in the proposed system is not transmitting while receiving symbols from the primary transmitter. Hence, the proposed scheme can achieve full-rate at a primary user without degrading its outage performance. Further, it guarantees every alternate time-slots to the secondary network for accessing the licensed spectrum by employing a secondary receiver as a cooperative relay. In this paper, we derive the analytical expression for the outage probability and ergodic capacity. Moreover, we validate the derived expression through simulation and asymptotic results. In concurrent spectrum sharing scenarios between radars and wireless communication systems, one strict approach to protect the radar from undesired interference is locating the base stations outside a guard (or exclusion) zone of the radar. As a result, users inside that zone experience bad communication coverage. This paper uses Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) to improve the base station coverage of users in the radar exclusion zone. The paper shows, through analysis and simulation, that joint optimization of base station and RIS locations improves the probability of coverage in the exclusion zone over the shared spectrum without disturbing the radar operation. In this study, we investigate the operation of a user-number threshold-based base station (BS) on/off control, in which the BS turns off when the number of users is less than a specific threshold value. This paper presents a space-based analysis of the BS on/off control system to which a stochastic geometric approach is applied. In particular, we derive the approximated closed-form expression of the coverage probability of a homogeneous network (HomNet) with the user-number threshold-based BS on/off control. Moreover, the optimal user-number threshold for maximizing coverage probability is analytically derived. In addition to HomNet, we also derive the approximated closed-form expression of the coverage probability and the optimal user-number thresholds for a heterogeneous network (HetNet). The results show that HetNet, the analysis of which seems intractable, can be analyzed in the form of a linear combination of HomNets with weighted densities. In addition, the optimal user-number threshold of each tier is obtained independently from other tiers. The modeling and analysis presented in this paper are not only limited to the case of user-number threshold-based on/off control, but also applicable to other novel on/off controls with minor modifications. This paper proposes a novel bit loading algorithm to multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems to maximize the system total throughput while satisfying the users’ individual quality of service (QoS) constraints. Although bit loading is generally a non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard problem, even for orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the mutual interference between the users, and the dependence of power coefficients and modulation orders are additional challenges that add substantial complexity to the optimization problem. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient bit loading algorithm for multicarrier NOMA systems and compare the complexity and throughput with a corresponding OMA system. The obtained results show that for the case of NOMA, bit loading provides an additional degree of freedom that allows non-uniform spectrum sharing among the users. In particular scenarios, the system may experience hybrid modes of operation, where the system switches between NOMA and OMA. The obtained numerical results show that NOMA can outperform OMA by 100% in terms of spectral efficiency, for a two-user scenario. The complexity of the loading process for NOMA is noticeably higher than OMA, which is due to the high complexity associated with the bit error rate (BER) computation in the case of NOMA. This paper considers the $\mathscr{L}_{2}$ string stability analysis and controller synthesis for vehicle platooning under jamming attacks and interferences from other communication channels. Jamming attacks and interferences for vehicle platooning systems are modeled as periodic denial of service attacks. Further, the vehicle platooning with denial of service attacks is modeled as a distributed switching system where an average dwell time approach is adopted for the stability analysis. Under the distributed switching system framework, this paper presents a co-design paradigm for the vehicle platooning. The distributed event-triggered method (ETM) and controllers are presented to guarantee $\mathscr{L}_{2}$ string stability, which can ensure that the output cannot be amplified along the vehicle platooning. Sufficient conditions for $\mathscr{L}_{2}$ string stability are then provided to guide the co-design of the ETM and controllers, which can be efficiently obtained by solving LMIs. Covert communications is critical in many application scenarios for ensuring transmission security and privacy. Two-way protocols are widely adopted in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted relaying networks to enable covert communications and prevent wireless signals from being overheard. To quantify the performance of covert communications in this special scenario, we derive the closed-form expression of outage probability and its asymptote in this paper. Considering the worst-case of covert communications, the optimal normalized power threshold of warden's detector is analyzed under a complex Gaussian distribution approximation. To meet the requirement of the detection error probability, the ratio of the transmission power between the covert nodes is investigated. This paper considers the downlink of an ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) system in which a base station (BS) serves multiple single-antenna users in the short (finite) blocklength (FBL) regime with the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In the FBL regime, the users' achievable rates are complex functions of the beamforming vectors and of the RIS's programmable reflecting elements (PREs). We propose the joint design of the transmit beamformers and PREs to maximize the geometric mean (GM) of these rates (GM-rate) and show that this approach provides fair rate distribution and thus reliable links to all users. Direction-of-arrival (DOA) information is vital for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems to complete localization and beamforming tasks. Switched antenna arrays have recently emerged as an effective solution to reduce the cost and power consumption of MIMO systems. Switch-based array architectures connect a limited number of radio frequency chains to a subset of the antenna elements forming a subarray. This paper addresses the problem of antenna selection to optimize DOA estimation performance. We first perform a subarray layout alignment process to remove subarrays with identical beampatterns and create a unique subarray set. By using this set, and based on a DOA threshold region performance approximation, we propose two antenna selection algorithms; a greedy algorithm and a deep-learning-based algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated numerically. The availability of LED-based headlights and taillights makes possible the use of visible light communication (VLC) as a wireless access technology for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. A critical concern to establish a reliable VLC link between two moving vehicles is the number of photodetectors and their locations on the destination vehicle. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the usage of dual photodetectors for a vehicular VLC system with selection combining to enhance signal reception in mobile conditions. We measure the electrical receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each individual photodetector as well as at the output of selection combiner in two different tracks involving straight and curved roads. Through data fitting to experimental data, we obtain a probability density function (PDF) to describe the instantaneous SNR. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is an emerging flexible and powerful multiple access for downlink multi-antenna networks. In this paper, we introduce the concept of RSMA into short-packet downlink communications. We design optimal linear precoders that maximize the sum rate with Finite Blocklength (FBL) constraints. The relations between the sum rate and blocklength of RSMA are investigated for a wide range of network loads and user deployments. Numerical results demonstrate that RSMA can achieve the same transmission rate as Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) and Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) with smaller blocklengths (and therefore lower latency), especially in overloaded multi-antenna networks. With low-cost energy consumption, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technique is a potential solution to the real-time data processing for intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). In this paper, an intelligent transmissive surface is introduced into the vehicular communications, enabling vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) signals to penetrate the intelligent RIS to access the base station (BS) on the opposite side of the vehicle. Considering that the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication reuses the spectrum spanned for V2I link, we investigate the ergodic capacity optimization problem for the vehicle performing V2I communications with the assistance of RIS, while meeting the low-latency and high-reliability requirements of the V2V link. The RIS transmission coefficients and power allocation of vehicles are jointly optimized, for the management of the desired and undesired vehicular communication links. Moreover, the expression of optimal phase shifts is derived in a closed-form, which reveals that the performance gain brought by RIS is proportional to the number of intelligent elements, while inversely proportional to the distance from vehicle-to-BS, in a quadratic form. Moreover, in the case of discrete phase shifts, an intelligent algorithm is proposed for the beamforming design at RIS. Afterwards, with the objective to maximize the ergodic capacity of the V2I link, the optimal power allocation is also proposed. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the proposed resource allocation strategy, and that the system performance in terms of the ergodic V2I capacity can be significantly improved by the RIS. The new Fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications and beyond 5G (B5G) networks are required to provide connectivity for massive number of devices at high speed and low latency. Within this context, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been involved and emerged in recent research since it is considered as an enabling technology for 5G and B5G networks. NOMA allows several users to share the same resources of time and frequency, making it an excellent candidate to provide impressively large connectivity with high spectral efficiency. In this paper, we study the performance of NOMA systems assuming independent but not necessarily to be identical $N$ -Nakagami-m multipath fading channels. This channel model subsumes the double Nakagami-m, which was investigated in the context of intervehicular communications and keyhole multiple input multiple output systems, as special cases. To this end, we derive exact analytical and asymptotic expressions for the probability density function of the overall signal to noise ratio, system capacity, and the pairwise error probability (PEP) for each user. In this paper, an antenna synthesis process is investigated for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) application. The wireless communication between Road Side Units (RSUs) and On Board Units (OBUs) located in the vehicles enables smart mobility. However, to support high speed vehicles and high data rates, a wider coverage area by the RSU antennas projected on the highway is required. This is defined by the radiation patterns of the RSU antennas. On a multi-lane highway, interference from the adjacent lanes is a critical issue which determines the communication reliability in terms of Single-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR). Hence, in this paper, an interference-aware antenna synthesis process is proposed and a planar array is optimized based on the objective function of obtaining a wide coverage area in terms of SINR distribution for a given modulation scheme. The proposed antenna array enhances the reliable communication area and provides improved SINR distribution across the lane for misaligned vehicles from the center of the lane. Intelligent transport systems (ITS) rely upon the connectivity, cooperation and automation of vehicles aimed at the improvement of safety and efficiency of the transport system. Connectivity, which is a key component for the practical implementation of vehicular light communications (VeLC) systems in ITS, must be carefully studied prior to design and implementation. In this paper, we carry out a performance evaluation study on the use of different vehicle taillights (TLs) as the transmitters in a VeLC system. We show that, the transmission coverage field of view and the link span depend on TLs illumination patterns and the transmit power levels, respectively, which fail to meet the typical communication distances in vehicular environments. This paper proposes an infrared-based VeLC system to meet the transmission range in daytimes under Sunlight noise. We show that, at the forward error correction bit error rate limit of 3.8 × 10−3, the communication distances of the proposed link are 63, 72, and > 89 m compared with 4.5, 5.4 and 6.3 m for BMW's vehicle TL at data rates of 10, 6, and 2 Mbps, respectively. Multi-numerology transmission is a promising multiple access scheme for flexible communication systems, which can simultaneously support users with different service requirements. To this end, both inter- and intra-numerology interference (inter-NI and intra-NI) should be suppressed, which is not straightforward. This paper proposes a novel zero-forcing (ZF) precoding design, which perfectly eliminates all the interference, for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with multi-numerology. First of all, we express the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the multi-numerology system with spectrum sharing. From the SINR representation, we identify the channels that precoders must nullify to suppress inter-NI. After that, we propose a ZF precoder suppressing both inter-NI and intra-NI perfectly. The lower bound of ergodic achievable rate with perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is analyzed. Based on the lower bound of ergodic achievable rate, we present the feasible rate region. Also, we propose two power allocation schemes: user fairness and the ergodic sum rate maximization. This article studies the transmit beamforming security in the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system, where the radar beam also serves as the artificial jamming to suppress potential eavesdropper channels. Unlike previous researches, which assumed that the lone target might be a potential eavesdropper on the adversary side, this paper analyses a more generic scenario in which the eavesdroppers’ channel state information (CSI) is unknown. The eavesdropping rate should be limited to guarantee transmission confidentiality, which is intractable owing to the unknown CSI. To address this issue, we present the long-term eavesdropping signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) as a more tractable security metric. Based on the long-term eavesdropping SINR, the sum rate maximization (SRM) and jamming power maximization (JPM) transmission scheme are investigated. For the SRM scheme, we propose a zero-forcing (ZF) suboptimal algorithm to solve the non-convex fractional programming (FP) problem, and for the JPM scheme, the resultant problem is solved via the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. In this paper, we propose a reference-free artificial noise (AN) waveform design and cancellation scheme for single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless secure transmission. First, a system structure with the aid of AN is presented, where we provide a specific method extracting the sign information of each symbol from the desired signal (DS) to form AN at the transmitter. Then, we notice that the legitimate receiver enable to reconstruct the AN from the received signal by almost the same method as the transmitter without AN reference, which reduces the system complexity in practice. Subsequently, the AN cancellation performance and the secrecy capacity at the receiver are analyzed, and their upper bounds are also derived. Finally, simulation results confirm that the proposed reference-free AN design and cancellation scheme can effectively suppress the AN at legitimate receiver, while degrades the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at eavesdropper seriously, which provides impressive secure performance in terms of secrecy capacity. In this paper, the extended $\eta$ - ${\mathcal F}$ composite fading distribution is proposed. This new distribution is simple, characterized in terms of physical parameters, able to model environments where the multipath fading coexists with shadowing and takes into account the clustering imbalance between the in-phase and quadrature components. For the aforementioned distribution, new expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF); cumulative distribution function, higher-order moments and moment generating function of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio; joint envelope-phase PDF and amount of fading. Subsequently, expressions are deduced for the outage probability, average symbol error probability and average channel capacity. An asymptotic analysis is also provided. Several curves are presented and the theoretical results are corroborated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Furthermore, an empirical validation is demonstrated in an underwater acoustic scenario, in which a better fit between the theoretical PDF and the empirical data is perceived for the extended $\eta$ - ${\mathcal F}$ model, when compared to the extended $\eta$ - $\mu$ and $\kappa$ - $\mu$ shadowed distributions. Target detection is an important problem in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Many existing target detection algorithms were proposed without taking into consideration the quantization error caused by analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). This paper addresses the problem of target detection for MIMO radar with one-bit ADCs and derives a Rao’s test-based detector. The proposed method has several appealing features: 1) it is a closed-form detector; 2) it allows us to handle sign measurements straightforwardly; 3) there are closed-form approximations of the detector’s distributions, which allow us to theoretically evaluate its performance. Moreover, the closed-form distributions allow us to study the performance degradation due to the one-bit ADCs, yielding an approximate 2 dB loss in the low-signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime compared to $\infty$ -bit ADCs. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been introduced as a promising emerging paradigm to design a smart radio environment for improving wireless capacity. It has the potential to reshape wave propagation via its tunable and low-cost reflecting elements. Therefore, it is regarded as a propitious solution that provides alternative paths for the propagation of high-frequency signals, which are vulnerable to blockages and suffer from penetration losses. Because of those features, RIS has been considered to be integrated into the wireless vehicular network (WVN), which is characterized by high mobility and high quality of service (QoS) requirements. Hence, similar to relaying systems, a vehicle needs to select the best available RIS that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. Inspired by that, in this paper, we introduce the partial RIS selection for enhancing capacity and reducing error rate. We derive closed-form expressions for the ergodic capacity, symbol error probability (SEP), and energy efficiency for a partial RIS selection design. Besides, we compare its performances to the partial relaying design while considering: decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward fixed gain (AF). Moreover, we consider a wireless attack scenario, where an eavesdropper intends to overhear the transmitted signal at the receiver’s end. Then, we compare partial RIS to partial relay selection from this security perspective, where we derive closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity. In this paper, we propose a physical layer secure transmission technology based on multi-components for multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. The scheme mainly realizes physical layer security (PLS) in General Multi-Fractional Fourier Transform (GMFRFT) signal domain, which is different from traditional schemes that rely on the spatial domain. Different GMFRFT components are transmitted by multiple antennas at the transmitter, then the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper receive the superposition of multiple non-orthogonal components. The resulting mutual interference will reduce the signal-to-interference and noise (SINR) at the eavesdropper, but without affecting the legitimate receiver. Because the legitimate receiver receives the non-contaminated GMFRFT signal due to designing multi-components at the transmitter, while the eavesdropper receives the signal whose constraint relations in the GMFRFT signal domain are destroyed, which will cause the energy loss of the information bearing signal. Furthermore, in order to achieve the maximum secrecy capacity, the selection method of GMFRFT transform order is given to adjust the power allocation among GMFRFT components. Compared with the scheme based on artificial noise (AN), the advantages of our scheme are: 1) our scheme can further reduce the capacity of wiretap channel while not requiring the transmitter to use partial power to transmit meaningless artificial noise signals; 2) our scheme outperforms AN-based schemes when the available spatial degrees of freedom are limited. Large-scale Internet of things (IoT) networks have shown great advantages and attracted much attention in 5G networks due to its high-speed Internet connectivity, high data rate, ultra reliability and low latency. However, the diversity of ubiquitous IoT devices and complex transmission environment lead to the difficulty of theoretical analysis of delay performance. In order to capture the characteristics of large IoT networks, a novel integrated analysis framework is developed to build the performance model and analyze the statistical delay performance in this paper. Specifically, we model the spatial distribution of IoT devices with heterogeneous Poisson point processes. With the Laplace transform of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, the service capability of the wireless channel with multiple interferes is determined with a mathematical stochastic-network-calculus aided approach in the exponential domain for Poisson bipolar and cellular networks. Then, the upper bound of delay is achieved by the Mellin transform of the service incremental process. We extend our work to a $k$ -tier heterogeneous network and apply the analysis results to a practical two-tier cognitive radio IoT network. This paper investigates the performance of an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where the IRS is mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to assist the transmissions from a base station (BS). The BS utilizes the UAV as a relay to serve multiple user equipments (UEs) on the ground. In addition to the IRS relaying links, we also incorporate direct non line-of-sight links between the BS and UEs. We derive the outage probability for this system configuration. Moreover, we obtain a bound of the ergodic spectral efficiency to extract various useful insights. Furthermore, we also compare the performance of the proposed system design against the baseline scheme. This paper investigates the capacity gain of full duplex (FD) self-backhauling over the half duplex (HD) counterpart in downlink cellular systems, and then proposes an opportunistic FD scheme. The first step is to derive the capacity gain of FD self-backhauling over the HD counterpart as a function of the system parameters in a computationally tractable form. Unlike previous studies on the capacity of FD self-backhauling, a practical constraint is imposed so that the end-to-end link achieves a target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for a successful link connection. Also, a condition under which FD is more beneficial than HD is derived. Specifically, the minimum allowable self interference cancellation factor and the maximum allowable cell radius for the benefit of FD are derived as an explicit function of system parameters. Their dependencies on the system parameters are investigated and compared with counterparts derived for single-hop point-to-point links. Lastly, to overcome the weak points of FD and HD, this paper proposes a user-wise opportunistic FD (OFD) self-backhauled scheme. To this end, an instantaneous channel gain-based FD/HD switching rule is derived from a condition under which FD cannot instantaneously satisfy the target SINR. We confirm the substantial capacity gain of the proposed user-wise instantaneous OFD over a cell-wise static duplex switching scheme, as well as the fixed duplex (HD or FD) schemes. When compared to the static duplex switching scheme, the proposed OFD is most beneficial at the boundary of HD-preferred and FD-preferred regions. Based on this, a system-level guideline is proposed for selecting the most practical scheme among OFD, FD, and HD by trading off capacity gain and switching overhead. The technical challenges, e.g. the mobility management and the offloading process, hinder the conventional cellular systems to meet the huge data traffic requirements of the next generation mobile communications. The traditional system (e.g dual-connectivity (DC)) has been proposed to improve the mobility management, however, it will inherit the big trade-off in the offloading process between the energy consumption for the small cell (SC) discovery (SCD) process and the efficiency of utilizing the system resources (e.g. frequency and signaling). In this paper, we present a framework to model the potential offloading opportunities as well as the offloading loss when a typical user equipment (UE) performs the inter-frequency (IRF) scan periodically. The proposed framework also studies the impact of the SCD on the energy efficiency. To improve the system performance and reduce the power consumption at the UEs, a new scheme, trio-connectivity (TC), is proposed in this paper to tackle the aforementioned challenges. The TC includes three planes: control-plane (C-plane), user-plane (U-plane) and indication-plane (I-plane). The I-plane works as an indicator to help the UE to identify and discover the SCs in the system prior to offloading. The role of the I-plane is to keep the SCD on one frequency channel regardless of the number of frequency channels in the system. In the proposed offloading mechanism, some of the energy consumption is transferred from the UE to the network. By using the proposed framework, UE energy efficiency and system energy efficiency as well as the total energy consumption are derived as performance metrics to compare between the TC and the DC. The terahertz (THz) waves with enormous bandwidth can be used along with the existing sub-6GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to achieve the ever evolving ecosystem of applications that need to be supported by the modern wireless networks. This paper investigates a user-centric dynamic base station (BS) clustering design for a hybrid network where THz, mmWave, and sub-6GHz BSs coexist. Invoking the proposed clustering model, the BS cooperation within each band is made possible by considering long term channel variations and all the surrounding BSs within a cluster with tunable size. A typical user is associated with the best BS cluster, from either a sub-6GHz, mmWave or THz tier based on the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) criterion or the maximum rate criterion. Using tools from stochastic geometry, we assess the performance of the proposed user-centric hybrid system in terms of SINR and rate coverage performances, while accounting for: band specific propagation models, directional beamfroming, and BSs random locations. The accuracy of the analytical results is validated with Monte-Carlo simulations. The obtained results recognize a clear coverage/rate trade-off where a high fraction of THz BSs improves the rate significantly but may degrade the coverage performance. Thus, with carefully planned networks, enabling user-centric BS cooperation for hybrid wireless systems can achieve ultra-high rates while maintaining sufficient coverage in sixth-generation (6G) networks. The recently proposed dual active protocol stack (DAPS) handover (HO) is one of the mobility enhancements that can effectively reduce the handover interruption time (HIT) in 5G networks. By using a DAPS solution, users can be connected to both the source cell and target cell during the HO execution phase, and thereby 0 ms of HIT becomes possible. However, the DAPS HO procedure may fail in 5G networks due to the channel characteristics of millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals. Since mmWave links are vulnerable to blockages, the received signal quality may degrade suddenly, which gives rise to an abrupt outage before DAPS HO can be completed. In this paper, a novel learning-based DAPS HO technology named intelligent DAPS (I-DAPS) HO is proposed to avoid sudden radio link failure (RLF) while providing a high data rate. The proposed I-DAPS HO uses a double deep Q-network (DDQN) deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework, where blockage predictions are made based on past received signal data such that RLFs can be actively avoided. In a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) based on IEEE 802.11p, the performance of the communication link is heavily influenced by interference. To quantify the impact of interference, analytical models usually explicitly or implicitly assumed the interference range beyond which interference is ignored. We find that the potential maximum interference range should be related to the minimum interference power that the device can perceive. However, most previous works on VANET performance modeling simply assumed a fixed interference range. The most recently proposed effective interference range dependent on the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) threshold may appear to exceed the potential maximum interference range, resulting in an overestimation of the impact of interference. This paper proposes the SINR related Effective Distance Constrained by the Maximum interference range-based (SED-CM) model for IEEE 802.11p VANET performance evaluation on the Highway. First, we give the potential maximum interference range setting by studying the empirical distribution of interference distance corresponding to the minimum interference power in NS2 simulation. The performance metrics are then derived. The proposed SED-CM model is further extended to the intersection scenario. We conducted extensive NS2 simulations to evaluate the proposed model and compare it with three typical models. Results show that the SED-CM model presents the best evaluation ability. Moreover, we experimentally analyzed the effect of vehicle speed on the performance of VANET by mapping the vehicle speed to the vehicle density. Recently, model-free power control approaches have been developed to achieve the near-optimal performance of cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with affordable computational complexity. In particular, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is one of such promising techniques for realizing effective power control. In this paper, we propose a model-free method adopting the deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm (DDPG) with feedforward neural networks (NNs) to solve the downlink max-min power control problem in CF massive MIMO systems. Our result shows that compared with the conventional convex optimization algorithm, the proposed DDPG method can effectively strike a performance-complexity trade-off obtaining 1,000 times faster implementation speed and approximately the same achievable user rate as the optimal solution produced by conventional numerical convex optimization solvers, thereby offering effective power control implementations for large-scale systems. Finally, we extend the DDPG algorithm to both the max-sum and the max-product power control problems, while achieving better performance than that achieved by the conventional deep learning algorithm. The proliferation of IEEE 802.11 or WiFi networks, and the explosive growth in traffic demands call for solutions to maximize the capacity of WiFi networks. Hence, maximizing the spatial reuse of WiFi networks is critical as doing so allows multiple concurrent transmissions. In this respect, a critical network parameter, Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) threshold, plays a vital role as it dictates whether a node is allowed to transmit after sensing the channel. In this paper, we propose to use Deep Q-network (DQN) under two learning patterns to select the CCA threshold of devices. We further consider Transmit Power Control (TPC) in conjunction with CCA threshold selection to improve the capacity of a WiFi network. The simulation results show that our approach is capable of selecting the optimal CCA threshold for each device. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission can effectively improve the energy/spectrum efficiency in wireless networks. This paper designs a low-complexity scheme to achieve the balanced tradeoff between the sum-rate and power consumption in a RIS-assisted NOMA system, which can be measured by energy efficiency. To solve the formulated problem effectively, the original non-convex problem is first decomposed into two subproblems, i.e., beamforming optimization and phase shift optimization. Alternating optimization is proposed to solve these two subproblems iteratively. In particular, successive convex approximation (SCA) is utilized to convert the non-convex constraints to convex ones. A non-multipath and a receive diversity power line communication (PLC) system subject to Rayleigh fading is considered in this paper with the transmitter employing non-orthogonal $M$ -ary frequency-shift keying ($M$ FSK) modulation scheme for data transmission. With the PLC systems corrupted by additive complex Nakagami- $m$ background noise, an optimal receiver for non-multipath PLC system and a Gauss-optimal receiver structure for the multipath PLC system are proposed using which, closed-form expressions for the symbol error probability (SEP) are derived using a characteristic function approach. The optimal correlation coefficients between the symbols of a binary FSK modulation scheme minimizing the SEP of the systems are obtained, which is further generalized by proposing a search-based algorithm to derive the optimal symbol correlation matrix for an $M$ FSK modulation leading to the minimal SEP values of the PLC systems. Numerical results show that the index value of the optimal correlation matrix depends on the system parameters namely the noise shape parameter and the average signal-to-noise ratio only for the case of the non-multipath PLC system, whereas there is no such dependency in the case of the multipath PLC system. As the number of antennas increases, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can precisely point to user equipments (UEs) with narrow beams. Accurate and timely channel state information (CSI) feedback is crucial to keep UEs in service. Mobile UEs, however, may suffer from the narrow beam nature of the massive MIMO system since UEs can move out of the beam coverage. When intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is applied to the massive MIMO system, the adjustment of the IRS cannot be frequent as the IRS is controlled remotely by the base station (BS). Limiting the number of CSI feedback and the number of both BS and IRS adjustments significantly reduces the overhead of transmission and computation to the system. In this paper, we consider the UEs’ mobility adaptation problem in an IRS assisted multiuser massive MIMO downlink system with infrequent CSI feedback. We propose a beam control method that adapts to UEs’ mobility. The problem is constructed as a sum rate problem where both the BS and IRS are taken into account to jointly optimize the beamforming matrices. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can converge quickly and provide satisfactory performance for mobile UEs. In this paper, we study the joint resource scheduling problem for multiplexing two distinct 5 G services: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC). While eMBB services require high data rates, URLLC services lay more emphasis on extremely low latency and high reliability. To satisfy these heterogeneous requirements for eMBB and URLLC coexistence, we propose a risk-resistant scheme for resource allocation to both eMBB and URLLC traffic that aims to maximize the eMBB data rate, while considering the URLLC delay threshold violation to maintain URLLC delay requirements. Based on the M/G/1 queueing model, the URLLC packet latency target is realized by minimizing the average packet delay in violation cases, where “violation” is judged by introducing the “conditional value at risk (CVaR)” as a risk metric (i.e., “risk” here is defined as URLLC delay threshold violation). To solve the formulated problem, we transform it into two convex optimization problems to obtain a near-optimal resource allocation solution. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the fairness among the eMBB users and eMBB throughput by $30\%\sim 34\%$ compared to existing works, while satisfying the stringent URLLC delay requirements. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has generated a much interest in the research community thanks to its wide range of applications, including submarine navigation, seafloor exploration, and military operation. Turbulence, scattering, and absorption phenomena generally can severely affect the performance of UWOC systems. The relaying methods have been shown as a promising technique to alleviate turbulence-induced and short-range fading. In this paper, under varying channel conditions, we present a unified framework to analyze the performance of multi-hop UWOC systems with both amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying techniques. In particular, for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we use the univariate and bivariate Fox-H functions to derive both the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF). Furthermore, for the performance of systems under both types of relaying techniques, we derive tight mathematical expressions for the outage probability and bit error probability. Besides, to highlight and provide some prominent engineering insights into the diversity order, an asymptotic analysis for the outage likelihood and average bit error rate (BER) is given. The coexistence of multiple types of users in vehicular networks results in diversified service requirements and multiscale content differences, which poses new challenges to reliable content transmission. This paper proposes a hierarchical coded caching framework coupled with coded caching, vehicle-to-everything communications, and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques. We quantify the user request hit ratio under different communication modes and study the hit ratio maximization problem under the constraint of limited communication and caching resources. We propose a two-layer matching based optimization algorithm, including a user association layer in distributed content sharing and a user grouping layer in centralized content requesting. Backscatter communication is an energy-efficient communication technique for the Internet of things (IoT) devices. It enables data transmission by reflecting the incident radio signals. In this paper, we propose a communication mode selection scheme for IoT devices that can communicate using either active transmission or backscattering. In the active transmission mode, the IoT devices can transmit data over narrowband subcarriers using power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In the backscattering mode, which operates over shorter distance than active transmission, nearby user equipment (UE) devices are used as relays. The UEs receive the backscattered signals from the IoT devices and forward them to the base station. We formulate a connection density maximization problem to select the communication mode used by each IoT device. We determine the IoT device pairing for active transmission mode with NOMA and UE-IoT device association for backscattering mode. The formulated problem is a binary integer programming problem. Although it can be solved optimally, the optimal algorithm incurs exponential computational complexity. Hence, we propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm to solve this problem. This paper investigates the performance of vertical underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradients. We consider a generalized UWOC channel model that contains $N$ layers, each having the same distribution but with different parameters to consider the vertically inhomogeneous nature of the underwater environment. To capture the effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on channel statistics, we model each layer with a mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution. A closed-form probability density function (PDF) is presented for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the PDF, we derive the average bit-error-rate (BER) and the ergodic capacity. Moreover, we provide asymptotic BER and ergodic capacity results in simple forms. At millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, narrow beamwidth and inaccurate channel estimation result in beam alignment errors, which degrade the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and rate. The extent of beam misalignment depends on the various link parameters, however, prior works ignored such a dependence and considered oversimplified array patterns. This paper formulates beam alignment errors for the uniform linear array at the base station as a function of the link parameters by using the Cramér Rao lower bound of angle-of-arrival estimates and proposes a tractable array pattern approximation to better reflect the effects of such alignment errors. Utilizing stochastic geometry and the statistics of the Student’s t-distribution, a novel and robust analytical technique is developed to obtain the downlink SNR and rate coverage probabilities due to beam misalignment, assuming a single antenna at the user. We show that beam alignment errors significantly affect the achievable SNR and rate for non line-of-sight (NLOS)/distant users whereas the effect is negligible for LOS/nearby users. It is also illustrated that the effects of alignment errors cannot be mitigated only by increasing the number of antennas. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered as a multiple access technique for supporting massive number of devices with high spectral efficiency. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is an efficient solution for fully autonomous and sustainable communication networks. In this paper, application of SWIPT in networks employing cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) is investigated with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Performance of the CNOMA network with SWIPT is investigated in a multi-tier downlink scenario with macro-base stations (MBSs) and femto-base stations (FBSs). The distribution of MBSs and FBSs follow Poisson point process model. Unlike solution in the existing literature, instead of using only the superimposed signal for energy harvesting (EH), in this work, the cooperating node/user employs EH using interference from the adjacent base stations. Expressions for outage probability and throughput are derived at the user pair (comprising a cell-center user and a cell-edge user) served using NOMA. In this paper, we propose a cost-efficient beamforming optimization algorithm for multi-user wireless communication systems associated with the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). From the baseline successive refinement algorithm, which gives a sub-optimal solution for the power minimization problem under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) constraint at each user, several optimization techniques are proposed to reduce the computation complexity while maintaining the algorithm-level performance. To reduce the number of required multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations, we first simplify the complicated matrix inversion by utilizing the channel hardening effect. We also present the two-phase refinement process for the group-level optimization of phase-shift elements, further relaxing the computation complexity as well as the processing latency. Applying the proposed optimization techniques, as a result, numerical results show that the fully-optimized algorithm can reduce the computational costs by up to 89.4% while showing less than 1 dB power loss, leading to the practical solution for the next-generation IRS-aided communication. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) control information delivery is a critical communication with stringent requirements in terms of reliability and latency. In this context, link adaptation plays an essential role in the fulfillment of the required performance in terms of decode error probability and delay. Link adaptation is usually based on channel quality indicator (CQI) feedback information from the user equipment that should represent the current state of the channel. However, measurement, scheduling and processing delays introduce a CQI aging effect, that is a mismatch between the current channel state and its CQI representation. Using outdated CQI values may lead to the selection of a wrong modulation and coding scheme, with a detrimental effect on performance. This is particularly relevant in ultra reliable and low latency communications (URLLC), where the control of the reliability can be negatively impacted, and it is more evident when the channel is fast varying as the case of UAVs. This paper analyzes the effects of CQI aging on URLLCs, considering transmissions under the finite blocklength regime, that characterizes such communications type. A deep learning approach is investigated to predict the next CQI from the knowledge of past reports, and performance in terms of decode error probability and throughput is given. This paper proposes a unified performance analysis framework of asymmetric dual-hop radio-frequency/free-space optical (RF/FSO) transmission systems. The generalized independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) $\alpha -\mu$ distribution is considered for each branch in the RF link, whereas the FSO link is assumed to experience Málaga ($\mathcal {M}$) fading with pointing error impairments. In this paper, we propose short-packet communications (SPCs) with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for coordinated and direct relay transmission (CDRT) Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks to enhance spectrum utilization and system performance. In this system, a source transmits its packets to a near IoT user via direct transmission and a far IoT user via selective relaying transmission under practical conditions of imperfect successive interference cancellation and cochannel interference. We derive the closed-form and asymptotic expressions for the average block-error-rate (BLER), throughput, and the goodput of the considered system over Rayleigh fading channels. To further improve the considered system, we formulate the system throughput maximization problem. Numerical results show that our proposed system outperforms the orthogonal multiple access and conventional NOMA-CDRT ones in terms of both BLER, system throughput, and goodput. In addition, by jointly optimizing power allocation coefficients and channel coding ratios, the system throughput performance is maximized. Furthermore, for a given block-length, the proposed system with short messages achieves superior latency and reliability compared to the long-message one. This paper provides a comprehensive framework to analyze the performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the downlink transmission of a single-carrier and multi-carrier terahertz (THz) network. Specifically, we first develop a novel user pairing scheme for the THz-NOMA network which ensures the performance gains of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) for each individual user in the NOMA pair and adapts according to the molecular absorption. Then, we characterize novel outage probability expressions considering a single-carrier and multi-carrier THz-NOMA network in the presence of various user pairing schemes, Nakagami- $m$ channel fading, and molecular absorption noise. We propose a moment-generating-function (MGF) based approach to analyze the outage probability of users in a multi-carrier THz network. Furthermore, for negligible thermal noise, we provide simplified single-integral expressions to compute the outage probability in a multi-carrier network. The large spectral bandwidth at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies provides a mean to achieve very high data rates in wireless communication systems. A unique characteristic of mmWave is that mmWave links are very sensitive to blockage and have large propagation path loss, which exhibits low line-of-sight (LoS) probability, unstable connectivity and unreliable communication. This paper studies the influence of the blockage in pedestrian scenario, explains in detail how blockage affects the mmWave propagation characteristics. In particular, we study the behavior of the blockage due to human mobility and how it affects the timescale for outage due to blockage using knife-edge diffraction model (KED). One of the existing solutions to overcome the influence of blockage, is to associate the user equipment (UE) with other available base stations (BSs) by handover (HO) if the serving BS is blocked. In this paper, for a pedestrian scenario, we propose two reinforcement learning (RL) based user association algorithms, which accounts for the past experience of the blockage on the position of the UE. One focuses on the reward to increase the sum LoS probability and is named as blockage-aware user association (BAUA). The other focuses on the reward to balance the trade-off between the throughput and the LoS probability and is named as modified BAUA. We compare the proposed algorithm with the conventional user algorithms such as the maximum throughput based algorithm and the maximum SINR based algorithm. Simulation results show that to increase the sum LoS probability BAUA would be suitable, and to increase the average throughput maximum throughput based method would be suitable. In this paper, we investigate device-to-device (D2D) communication networks which are one of the key technologies for next-generation mobile communication networks and many other applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), and Internet of things (IoT). The overlay D2D communication networks that are considered in our study use dedicated radio resources separate from what cellular networks use and there exists co-channel interference in D2D networks without cross-channel interference between two networks. We propose a new transmission scheme for overlay D2D networks that uses a dueling deep reinforcement learning (DRL) architecture. The DRL is especially effective in environments where actions do not affect subsequent states as in wireless communication networks. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed architecture is designed to utilize only information that each D2D devices can easily obtain by measuring channels. The proposed scheme thus enables D2D devices to train their own neural networks and to decide autonomously whether to transmit data without any intervention from infrastructures. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of average sum-rates and is compared to three baseline schemes. This paper thoroughly investigates the performance of short-packet communications over cascaded fading channels that have a variety of applications in mobile-to-mobile (M2M) communications. By considering the wide occurrence of the correlation among cascaded fading processes, cascaded Nakagami- $m$ channel model with general correlation is adopted. However, the presence of channel correlation poses significant challenges on the analysis of block error rate (BLER), which is the most fundamental performance metric in short-packet communications. For tractability, Mellin transform is first invoked to derive the BLER in terms of the representation of an infinite summation. This result then enables the asymptotic analysis of BLER with useful insights, including the diversity order, the negative impact of correlation and the extension to infinite blocklength regime. Furthermore, to implement the infinite series representation of BLER, an effective truncation approach is proposed with controllable calculation accuracy. This paper studies the performance of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided short-packet non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems under perfect and imperfect successive interference cancellation. Closed-form expressions for the average block error rate (BLER) with random and optimal phase shifts are derived. To gain some useful insights, an asymptotic analysis is carried out, based on which the diversity gain is achieved. Numerical results show that, at high signal-to-noise ratio, users with random phase shift achieve significant performance improvements in the performance gap between direct and non-direct links from a source when compared with that of the optimal phase shift. In addition, the proposed system outperforms its orthogonal multiple access counterpart in terms of both BLER and throughput.
