The ultrathin channel in 2D semiconductors, although playing host to several interesting properties, also renders strong interactions (scattering) of charge carriers with the surrounding medium. The over-arching dominance of surface (interfacial) optical phonons in 2D charge transport and engineering ideal nitride-based dielectric environments for large performance gains is reported. Charge transport in MoS2 field effect transistors (FETs) fabricated on three conventional substrates, SiO2, Al2O3, and HfO2, is contrasted with a newly introduced, CMOS-compatible nitride-based dielectric: aluminum nitride (AlN) by employing semi-classical models which account for charged impurity, surface optical phonon, and intrinsic phonon scattering. Unlike previous reports focused on charge impurity scattering, this work presents a new paradigm of utilizing high optical phonon energies intrinsic to ``stiff `` nitride bonds. This results in substantially lower surface optical phonon scattering in 2D FETs which directly influences peak field effect (FE) mobility, high field mobility degradation, and temperature-dependent mobility. Leveraging on these insights, high-performance sulfur-passivated MoS2 FETs with an optimum all-nitride environment (hexagonal boron nitride/MoS2/AlN) are demonstrated with FE mobility up to 72.8 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). This work is envisioned to address important issues in design of dielectric environments for a host of applications based on 2D materials.

We report quantum transport measurements on two dimensional (2D) Si:P and Ge:P δ-layers and compare the inelastic scattering rates relevant for weak localization (WL) and universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) for devices of various doping densities (0.3–2.5 × 1018 m−2) at low temperatures (0.3–4.2 K). The phase breaking rate extracted experimentally from measurements of WL correction to conductivity and UCF agree well with each other within the entire temperature range. This establishes that WL and UCF, being the outcome of quantum interference phenomena, are governed by the same dephasing rate.

The grain size of monolayer large area graphene is key to its performance. Microstructural design for the desired grain size requires a fundamental understanding of graphene nucleation and growth. The two levers that can be used to control these aspects are the defect density, whose population can be controlled by annealing, and the gas-phase supersaturation for activation of nucleation at the defect sites. We observe that defects on copper surface, namely dislocations, grain boundaries, triple points, and rolling marks, initiate nucleation of graphene. We show that among these defects dislocations are the most potent nucleation sites, as they get activated at lowest supersaturation. As an illustration, we tailor the defect density and supersaturation to change the domain size of graphene from 100 mu m(2). Growth data reported in the literature has been summarized on a supersaturation plot, and a regime for defect-dominated growth has been identified. In this growth regime, we demonstrate the spatial control over nucleation at intentionally introduced defects, paving the way for patterned growth of graphene. Our results provide a unified framework for understanding the role of defects in graphene nucleation and can be used as a guideline for controlled growth of graphene.

Enhancement of localized electric field near metal (plasmonic) nanostructures can have various interesting applications in sensing, imaging, photovoltage generation etc., for which significant efforts are aimed towards developing plasmonic systems with well designed and large electromagnetic response. In this paper, we discuss the wafer scale fabrication and optical characterization of a unique three dimensional plasmonic material. The near field enhancement in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum obtained in these structures (order of 106), is close to the fundamental limit that can be obtained in this and similar EM field enhancement schemes. The large near field enhancement has been reflected in a huge Raman signal of graphene layer in close proximity to the plasmonic system, which has been validated with FEM simulations. We have integrated graphene photodetectors with this material to obtain record photovoltage generation, with responsivity as high as A/W. As far as we know, this is the highest sensitivity obtained in any plasmonic-graphene hybrid photodetection system till date.

An improved Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) for extracting phase and frequency of the fundamental component of a highly distorted grid voltage is presented. The structure of the single-phase PLL is based on the Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) PLL and uses an All Pass Filter (APF) to generate the quadrature component from the single phase input voltage. In order to filter the harmonic content, a Moving Average Filter (MAF) is used, and performance is improved by designing a lead compensator and also a feed-forward compensator. The simulation results are compared to show the improved performance with feed-forward. In addition, the frequency dependency of MAF is dealt with by a proposed method for adaption to the frequency. This method changes the window size based on the frequency on a sample-by-sample basis. By using this method, the speed of resizing can be reduced in order to decrease the output ripples caused by window size variations.

Interaction between the lattice and the orbital degrees of freedom not only makes rare-earth nickelates unusually "bad metal", but also introduces a temperature driven insulator-metal phase transition. Here we investigate this insulator-metal phase transition in thin films of $\mathrm{SmNiO_3}$ using the slow time dependent fluctuations (noise) in resistivity. The normalized magnitude of noise is found to be extremely large, being nearly eight orders of magnitude higher than thin films of common disordered metallic systems, and indicates electrical conduction via classical percolation in a spatially inhomogeneous medium. The higher order statistics of the fluctuations indicate a strong non-Gaussian component of noise close to the transition, attributing the inhomogeneity to co-existence of the metallic and insulating phases. Often voltage rise along low voltage (LV) networks limits their capacity to accommodate more renewable energy (RE) sources. This paper proposes a robust and effective approach to coordinate customers' resources and control voltage rise in LV networks, where photovoltaics (PVs) are considered as the RE sources. The proposed coordination algorithm includes both localized and distributed control strategies. The localized strategy determines the value of PV inverter active and reactive power, while the distributed strategy coordinates customers' energy storage units (ESUs). To verify the effectiveness of proposed approach, a typical residential LV network is used and simulated in the PSCAD-EMTC platform.

Voltage rise is one of the main factors which limits the capacity of Low Voltage (LV) network to accommodate more Renewable Energy (RE) sources. This paper proposes a robust and effective approach to coordinate customers’ resources and manage voltage rise in residential LV networks. PV is considered as the customer RE source. The suggested coordination approach in this paper includes both localized control strategy, based on local measurement, and distributed control strategy based on consensus algorithm. This approach can completely avoid maximum permissible voltage limit violation. A typical residential LV network is used as the case study where the simulated results are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Severe power quality problems can arise when a large number of single-phase distributed energy resources (DERs) are connected to a low-voltage power distribution system. Due to the random location and size of DERs, it may so happen that a particular phase generates excess power than its load demand. In such an event, the excess power will be fed back to the distribution substation and will eventually find its way to the transmission network, causing undesirable voltage–current unbalance. As a solution to this problem, the article proposes the use of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM), which regulates voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC), thereby ensuring balanced current flow from and to the distribution substation. Additionally, this device can also support the distribution network in the absence of the utility connection, making the distribution system work as a microgrid. The proposals are validated through extensive digital computer simulation studies using PSCADTM.

This paper proposes a new approach for state estimation of angles and frequencies of equivalent areas in large power systems with synchronized phasor measurement units. Defining coherent generators and their correspondent areas, generators are aggregated and system reduction is performed in each area of inter-connected power systems. The structure of the reduced system is obtained based on the characteristics of the reduced linear model and measurement data to form the nonlinear model of the reduced system. Then a Kalman estimator is designed for the reduced system to provide an equivalent dynamic system state estimation using the synchronized phasor measurement data. The method is simulated on two test systems to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method.

We report non-saturating linear magnetoresistance (MR) in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterointerface in the strongly insulating regime. We achieve this by driving the gate voltage below the pinch-off point of the device and operating it in the non-equilibrium regime with high source-drain bias. Remarkably, the magnitude of MR is as large as 500% per Tesla with respect to resistance at zero magnetic field, thus dwarfing most non-magnetic materials which exhibit this linearity. Its primary advantage over most other materials is that both linearity and the enormous magnitude are retained over a broad temperature range (0.3 K to 10 K), thus making it an attractive candidate for cryogenic sensor applications.

We present electrical transport arid low frequency (1/f) noise measurements on mechanically exfoliated single, In and triLayer MoS2-based FPI devices on Si/SiO2 substrate. We find that tie electronic states hi MoS2 are localized at low temperatures (T) and conduction happens through variable range hopping (VRH). A steep increase of 1/f noise with decreasing T, typical for localized regime was observed in all of our devices. From gate voltage dependence of noise, we find that the noise power is inversely proportional to square of the number density (proportional to 1/n(2)) for a wide range of T, indicating number density fluctuations to be the dominant source of 1/f noise in these MoS2 FETs.

The majority of distribution utilities do not have accurate information on the constituents of their loads. This information is very useful in managing and planning the network, adequately and economically. Customer loads are normally categorized in three main sectors: 1) residential; 2) industrial; and 3) commercial. In this paper, penalized least-squares regression and Euclidean distance methods are developed for this application to identify and quantify the makeup of a feeder load with unknown sectors/subsectors. This process is done on a monthly basis to account for seasonal and other load changes. The error between the actual and estimated load profiles are used as a benchmark of accuracy. This approach has shown to be accurate in identifying customer types in unknown load profiles, and is used in cross-validation of the results and initial assumptions.

This study provides a new general approach for defining coherent generators in power systems based on the coherency in low-frequency inter-area modes. The disturbance is considered to be distributed in the network by applying random load changes which is the random walk representation of real loads instead of a single fault and coherent generators are obtained by spectrum analysis of the generators velocity variations. In order to find the coherent areas and their borders in the inter-connected networks, non-generating buses are assigned to each group of coherent generator using similar coherency detection techniques. The method is evaluated on two test systems and coherent generators and areas are obtained for different operating points to provide a more accurate grouping approach which is valid across a range of realistic operating points of the system.

Current unbalance is a significant power quality problem in distribution networks. This problem increases further with the increased penetration of single-phase photovoltaic cells. In this paper, a new approach is developed for current unbalance reduction in medium voltage distribution networks. The method is based on utilization of three single-phase voltage source converters connected in delta configuration between the phases. Each converter is controlled to function as a varying capacitor. The combination of the load and the compensator will result in a balanced load with unity power factor. The efficacy of the proposed current unbalance reduction concept is verified through dynamic simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC.

The presence of large number of single-phase distributed energy resources (DERs) can cause severe power quality problems in distribution networks. The DERs can be installed in random locations. This may cause the generation in a particular phase exceeds the load demand in that phase. Therefore the excess power in that phase will be fed back to the transmission network. To avoid this problem, the paper proposes the use of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) that needs to be connected at the first bus following a substation. When operated properly, the DSTATCOM can facilitate a set of balanced current flow from the substation, even when excess power is generated by DERs. The proposals are validated through extensive digital computer simulation studies using PSCAD and MATLAB.

This paper presents a new approach for network upgrading to improve the penetration level of Small Scale Generators in residential feeders. In this paper, it is proposed that a common DC link can be added to LV network to alleviate the negative impact of increased export power on AC lines, allowing customers to inject their surplus power with no restrictions to the common DC link. In addition, it is shown that the proposed approach can be a pathway from current AC network to future DC network.

The potential of multiple distribution static synchronous compensators (DSTATCOMs) to improve the voltage profile of radial distribution networks has been reported in the literature by few authors. However, the operation of multiple DSTATCOMs across a distribution feeder may introduce control interactions and/or voltage instability. This study proposes a control scheme that alleviates interactions among controllers and enhances proper reactive power sharing among DSTATCOMs. A generalised mathematical model is presented to analyse the interactions among any number of DSTATCOMs in the network. The criterion for controller design is developed by conducting eigenvalue analysis on this mathematical model. The proposed control scheme is tested in time domain on a sample radial distribution feeder installed with multiple DSTATCOMs and test results are presented.

We present thermal and electrical transport measurements of low-density (10$^{14}$ m$^{-2}$), mesoscopic two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We find that even in the supposedly strongly localised regime, where the electrical resistivity of the system is two orders of magnitude greater than the quantum of resistance $h/e^2$, the thermopower decreases linearly with temperature indicating metallicity. Remarkably, the magnitude of the thermopower exceeds the predicted value in non-interacting metallic 2DESs at similar carrier densities by over two orders of magnitude. Our results indicate a new quantum state and possibly a novel class of itinerant quasiparticles in dilute 2DESs at low temperatures where the Coulomb interaction plays a pivotal role., 8 pages, 8 figures (version to appear in Phys. Multilevel converters, because of the benefits they attract in generating high quality output voltage, are used in several applications. Various modulation and control techniques are introduced by several researchers to control the output voltage of the multilevel converters like space vector modulation and harmonic elimination (HE) methods. Multilevel converters may have a DC link with equal or unequal DC voltages. In this study a new HE technique based on the HE method is proposed for multilevel converters with unequal DC link voltage. The DC link voltage levels are considered as additional variables for the HE method and the voltage levels are defined based on the HE results. Increasing the number of voltage levels can reduce lower order harmonic content because of the fact that more variables are created. In comparison to previous methods, this new technique has a positive effect on the output voltage quality by reducing its total harmonic distortion, which must take into consideration for some applications such as uninterruptable power supply, motor drive systems and piezoelectric transducer excitation. In order to verify the proposed modulation technique, MATLAB simulations and experimental tests are carried out for a single-phase four-level diode-clamped converter.

A general electrical model of a piezoelectric transducer for ultrasound applications consists of a capacitor in parallel with RLC legs. A high power voltage source converter can however generate significant voltage stress across the transducer that creates high leakage currents. One solution is to reduce the voltage stress across the piezoelectric transducer by using an LC filter, however a main drawback is changing the piezoelectric resonant frequency and its characteristics. Thereby it reduces the efficiency of energy conversion through the transducer. This paper proposes that a high frequency current source converter is a suitable topology to drive high power piezoelectric transducers efficiently.

We report a simple method to enhance the piezoresistive sensitivity of a gold film by more than 30 times and demonstrate it using a microcantilever resonator. Our method depends on controlled electromigration that we use to tune the resistance and sensitivity of the piezoresistive sensor. We attribute the enhancement in strain sensitivity to the creation of an inhomogeneous conduction medium at a predefined location by directed and controlled electromigration. We understand this phenomenon with tunneling-percolation model, which was originally hypothesized to explain nonuniversal percolation behavior of composite materials. 2012-0174]

Australia is rich in renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and geothermal. Geographical diversity of these renewable resources combined with developing climate change policies poses a great challenge for the long term interconnection planning. Intermittency of wind and solar potentially driving the development of new transmission lines bring additional complexity to power system operations and planning. This paper provides an overview of generation and transmission planning studies in Australia to meet 20% renewable energy target by 2020. Appraisal of the effectiveness of dispersed energy storage, non schedulable peaking plants, wide area controls and demand management techniques to aid the penetration of renewables is presented in this paper.

Advances in solid-state switches and power electronics techniques have led to the development of compact, efficient and more reliable pulsed power systems. This paper proposes an efficient scheme that utilizes modular switch-capacitor units in obtaining high voltage levels with fast rise time (dv/dt) using low voltage solid-state switches. The proposed pulsed power supply has flexibility in terms of controlling energy and generating broad range of voltage levels. The energy flow can be controlled as the stored energy can be adjusted by a current source utilized at the first stage of the system. Desirable voltage level can be obtained by connecting adequate number of switch-capacitor units. Moreover, the proposed topology is load independent. Therefore it can easily supply wide range of applications especially the low impedance ones. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by simulations.

In this paper, an integrated methodology is proposed for planning distribution networks in which the operation of distributed generators (DGs) and cross-connections (CCs) is optimally planned. Distribution lines and high-voltage/medium-voltage (HV/MV) transformers are also optimally upgraded in order to improve system reliability and to minimize line losses under load growth. An objective function is constituted, composed of the investment cost, loss cost, and reliability cost. The energy savings that result from installing DGs is also included in this function. The bus voltage and line current are maintained within their standard bounds as constraints. DG output power is used as another constraint, where this should not be less than 30% of the generator's rated power; otherwise, the unit is not switched on. The modified discrete particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is employed in this paper for optimizing this planning problem. To evaluate the proposed approach, the distribution system connected to bus 4 of the Roy Billinton test system is used. Four different scenarios are assessed. In the first scenario, a basic planning approach is studied. In the second scenario, the use of DG is planned to avoid the line and transformer upgrading. In the third scenario, CC-based planning is studied when no DG exists. Finally, the proposed technique, in which all technologies are included, is investigated in the fourth scenario. The outcomes demonstrate that the lowest cost plan results when all technologies are incorporated as proposed in this paper. A study is performed to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed PSO-based optimization method. The results highlight the applicability of this method for solving the distribution network planning problem.

The dc capacitors voltage unbalancing is the main technical drawback of a diode-clamped multilevel inverter (DCMLI), with more than three levels. A voltage-balancing circuit based on buck–boost chopper connected to the dc link of DCMLI is a reliable and robust solution to this problem. This study presents four different schemes for controlling the chopper circuit to achieve the capacitor voltages equalisation. These can be broadly categorised as single-pulse, multi-pulse and hysteresis band current control schemes. The single-pulse scheme does not involve faster switching actions but need the chopper devices to be rated for higher current. The chopper devices current rating can be kept limited by using the multi-pulse scheme but it involves faster switching actions and slower response. The hysteresis band current control scheme offers faster dynamics, lower current rating of the chopper devices and can nullify the initial voltage imbalance as well. However, it involves much faster switching actions which may not be feasible for some of its applications. Therefore depending on the system requirements and ratings, one of these schemes may be used. The performance and validity of the proposed schemes are confirmed through both simulation and experimental investigations on a prototype five-level diode-clamped inverter.

This paper proposes a novel peak load management scheme for rural areas. The scheme transfers certain customers onto local nonembedded generators during peak load periods to alleviate network under voltage problems. This paper develops and presents this system by way of a case study in Central Queensland, Australia. A methodology is presented for determining the best location for the nonembedded generators as well as the number of generators required to alleviate network problems. A control algorithm to transfer and reconnect customers is developed to ensure that the network voltage profile remains within specification under all plausible load conditions. Finally, simulations are presented to show the performance of the system over a typical maximum daily load profile with large stochastic load variations.

We present low temperature electrical transport experiments in five field effect transistor devices consisting of monolayer, bilayer and trilayer MoS2 films, mechanically exfoliated onto Si/SiO2 substrate. Our experiments reveal that the electronic states in all films are localized well up to the room temperature over the experimentally accessible range of gate voltage. This manifests in two dimensional (2D) variable range hopping (VRH) at high temperatures, while below \sim 30 K the conductivity displays oscillatory structures in gate voltage arising from resonant tunneling at the localized sites. From the correlation energy (T0) of VRH and gate voltage dependence of conductivity, we suggest that Coulomb potential from trapped charges in the substrate are the dominant source of disorder in MoS2 field effect devices, which leads to carrier localization as well., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; ACS Nano (2011)

This paper proposes a comprehensive approach to the planning of distribution networks and the control of microgrids. Firstly, a Modified Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (MDPSO) method is used to optimally plan a distribution system upgrade over a 20 year planning period. The optimization is conducted at different load levels according to the anticipated load duration curve and integrated over the system lifetime in order to minimize its total lifetime cost. Since the optimal solution contains Distributed Generators (DGs) to maximize reliability, the DG must be able to operate in islanded mode and this leads to the concept of microgrids. Thus the second part of the paper reviews some of the challenges of microgrid control in the presence of both inertial (rotating direct connected) and non-inertial (converter interfaced) DGs. More specifically enhanced control strategies based on frequency droop are proposed for DGs to improve the smooth synchronization and real power sharing minimizing transient oscillations in the microgrid. Simulation studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the control.

Topological defects are ubiquitous from solid state physics to cosmology, where they drive phase transitions by proliferating as domain walls, monopoles or vortices. As quantum excitations, they often display fractional charge and anyonic statistics, making them relevant to topologically protected quantum computation, but realizing a controlled physical resource for topological excitations has been difficult. Here we report evidence of topological excitations during the localization transition in strongly interacting two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We find the electrical conductivity at low electron densities to follow a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz Thouless (BKT)-like order-disorder transition implying a gate-tunable proliferation of charged topological defects. At low temperatures, a weakening in the temperature dependence of conductivity was observed, and linked to the zero point fluctuations and delocalization of the defects. In this paper a new approach is proposed for interpreting of regional frequencies in multi machine power systems. The method uses generator aggregation and system reduction based on coherent generators in each area. The reduced system structure is able to be identified and a kalman estimator is designed for the reduced system to estimate the inter-area modes using the synchronized phasor measurement data. The proposed method is tested on a six machine, three area test system and the obtained results show the estimation of inter-area oscillations in the system with a high accuracy.

This paper discusses the control and protection of a microgrid that is connected to utility through back-to-back converters. The back-to-back converter connection facilitates bidirectional power flow between the utility and the microgrid. These converters can operate in two different modes–one in which a fixed amount of power is drawn from the utility and the other in which the microgrid power shortfall is supplied by the utility. In the case of a fault in the utility or microgrid side, the protection system should act not only to clear the fault but also to block the back-to-back converters such that its dc bus voltage does not fall during fault. Furthermore, a converter internal mechanism prevents it from supplying high current during a fault and this complicates the operation of a protection system. To overcome this, an admittance based relay scheme is proposed, which has an inverse time characteristic based on measured admittance of the line. The proposed protection and control schemes are able to ensure reliable operation of the microgrid.

Optimal scheduling of voltage regulators (VRs), fixed and switched capacitors and voltage on customer side of transformer (VCT) along with the optimal allocation of VRs and capacitors are performed using a hybrid optimisation method based on discrete particle swarm optimisation and genetic algorithm. Direct optimisation of the tap position is not appropriate since in general the high voltage (HV) side voltage is not known. Therefore, the tap setting can be determined given the optimal VCT once the HV side voltage is known. The objective function is composed of the distribution line loss cost, the peak power loss cost and capacitors' and VRs' capital, operation and maintenance costs. The constraints are limits on bus voltage and feeder current along with VR taps. The bus voltage should be maintained within the standard level and the feeder current should not exceed the feeder-rated current. The taps are to adjust the output voltage of VRs between 90 and 110% of their input voltages. For validation of the proposed method, the 18-bus IEEE system is used. The results are compared with prior publications to illustrate the benefit of the employed technique. The results also show that the lowest cost planning for voltage profile will be achieved if a combination of capacitors, VRs and VCTs is considered.

Depleting fossil fuel resources and increased accumulation of greenhouse gas emissions are increasingly making electrical vehicles (EV) attractive option for the transportation sector. However uncontrolled random charging and discharging of EVs may aggravate the problems of an already stressed system during the peak demand and cause voltage problems during low demand. This paper develops a demand side response scheme for properly integrating EVs in the Electrical Network. The scheme enacted upon information on electricity market conditions regularly released by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) on the internet. The scheme adopts Internet relays and solid state switches to cycle charging and discharging of EVs. Due to the pending time-of-use and real-price programs, financial benefits will represent driving incentives to consumers to implement the scheme. A wide-scale dissemination of the scheme is expected to mitigate excessive peaks on the electrical network with all associated technical, economic and social benefits.

Protection of a distribution network in the presence of distributed generators (DGs) using overcurrent relays is a challenging task because of the changes in fault current levels and reverse power flow. Specifically, in the presence of current limited converter interfaced DGs, overcurrent relays may fail to isolate the faulted section either in grid connected or islanded mode of operation. In this study, a new inverse-type relay is presented to protect a distribution network, which may have several DG connections. The new relay characteristic is designed based on the measured admittance of the protected line. The relay is capable of detecting faults under changing fault current levels. The relay performance is evaluated using PSCAD simulation and laboratory experiments.

This paper presents a high-voltage pulsed-power system based on low-voltage switch-capacitor units that are connected to a current source for several applications such as plasma systems. A modified positive buck-boost converter topology is used to utilize the current source concept, and a series of low-voltage switch-capacitor units is connected to the current source in order to provide a high voltage with a high voltage stress (dv/dt) as demanded by the loads. This pulsed-power converter is flexible in terms of energy control because the stored energy in the current source can be adjusted by changing the current magnitude to significantly improve the efficiency of various systems with different requirements. The output-voltage magnitude and stress (dv/dt) can be controlled by a proper selection of components and control algorithm to turn on and off the switching devices.

This paper investigates the possibility of power sharing improvements amongst distributed generators with low cost, low bandwidth communications. Decentralized power sharing or power management can be improved significantly with low bandwidth communication. Utility intranet or a dedicated web based communication can serve the purpose. The effect of network parameter such line impedance, R/X ratio on decentralized power sharing can be compensated with correction in the decentralized control reference quantities through the low bandwidth communication. In this paper, the possible improvement is demonstrated in weak system condition, where the micro sources and the loads are not symmetrical along the rural microgrid with high R/X ratio line, creates challenge for decentralized control. In those cases the web based low bandwidth communication is economic and justified than costly advance high bandwidth communication.

The paper proposes a solution for testing of a physical distributed generation system (DGs) along with a computer simulated network. The computer simulated network is referred as the virtual grid in this paper. Integration of DG with the virtual grid provides broad area of testing of power supplying capability and dynamic performance of a DG. It is shown that a DG can supply a part of load power while keeping Point of Common Coupling (PCC) voltage magnitude constant. To represent the actual load, a universal load along with power regenerative capability is designed with the help of voltage source converter (VSC) that mimics the load characteristic. The overall performance of the proposed scheme is verified using computer simulation studies.

This study presents a new DC DC multi-output boost (MOB) converter which can share its total output between different series of output voltages for low- and high-power applications. This configuration can be utilised instead of several single output power supplies. This is a compatible topology for a diode-clamed inverter in the grid connection systems, where boosting low rectified output-voltage and series DC link capacitors is required. To verify the proposed topology, steady-state and dynamic analyses of a MOB converter are examined. A simple control strategy has been proposed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed topology for a double-output boost converter. The topology and its control strategy can easily be extended to offer multiple outputs. Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the control strategy for the proposed converter.

In this paper, a generalized multiband hysteresis modulation and its characterization have been proposed for the sliding-mode control of cascaded H-bridge multilevel-inverter (CHBMLI)-controlled systems. A frequency-domain method is proposed for the determination of net hysteresis bandwidth for a given desired maximum switching frequency of the inverter. The switching transition concept of Tsypkin's method and the describing function of nonlinear relay have been used for the derivation of results. A hierarchical switching algorithm has been suggested for the modular cells of the cascaded multilevel inverter. The hierarchy of each cell is swapped sequentially to provide the self-balancing capability in case the dc-link voltage is supported by the capacitors. The simulation and experimental verification of the derived results are provided through a single-phase distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) model. The application in the three-phase system has been shown through simulation studies on a 3.3-kV distribution-system compensation using DSTATCOM. Verification on both single- and three-phase systems is obtained using a five-level cascaded-multilevel-inverter topology.

Islanded operation, protection, reclosing and arc extinguishing are some of the challenging issues related to the connection of converter interfaced distributed generators (DGs) into a distribution network. The isolation of upstream faults in grid connected mode and fault detection in islanded mode using overcurrent devices are difficult. In the event of an arc fault, all DGs must be disconnected in order to extinguish the arc. Otherwise, they will continue to feed the fault, thus sustaining the arc. However, the system reliability can be increased by maximising the DG connectivity to the system: therefore, the system protection scheme must ensure that only the faulted segment is removed from the feeder. This is true even in the case of a radial feeder as the DG can be connected at various points along the feeder. In this paper, a new relay scheme is proposed which, along with a novel current control strategy for converter interfaced DGs, can isolate permanent and temporary arc faults. The proposed protection and control scheme can even coordinate with reclosers. The results are validated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and MATLAB calculations.

This paper shows how the power quality can be improved in a microgrid that is supplying a nonlinear and unbalanced load. The microgrid contains a hybrid combination of inertial and converter interfaced distributed generation units where a decentralized power sharing algorithm is used to control its power management. One of the distributed generators in the microgrid is used as a power quality compensator for the unbalanced and harmonic load. The current reference generation for power quality improvement takes into account the active and reactive power to be supplied by the micro-source which is connected to the compensator. Depending on the power requirement of the nonlinear load, the proposed control scheme can change modes of operation without any external communication interfaces. The compensator can operate in two modes depending on the entire power demand of the unbalanced nonlinear load. The proposed control scheme can even compensate system unbalance caused by the single-phase micro-sources and load changes. The efficacy of the proposed power quality improvement control and method in such a microgrid is validated through extensive simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC software with detailed dynamic models of the micro-sources and power electronic converters.

Improving efficiency and flexibility in pulsed power supply technologies is the most substantial concern of pulsed power systems specifically with regard to plasma generation. Recently, the improvement of pulsed power supply has become of greater concern due to the extension of pulsed power applications to environmental and industrial areas. With this respect, a current source based topology is proposed in this paper as a pulsed power supply which gives the possibility of power flow control during load supplying mode. The main contribution in this configuration is utilization of low-medium voltage semiconductor switches for high voltage generation. A number of switch-diode-capacitor units are designated at the output of topology to exchange the current source energy into voltage form and generate a pulsed power with sufficient voltage magnitude and stress. Simulations carried out in Matlab/SIMULINK platform as well as experimental tests on a prototype setup have verified the capability of this topology in performing desired duties. Being efficient and flexible are the main advantages of this topology.

Common mode voltage generated by a power converter in combination with parasitic capacitive couplings is a potential source of shaft voltage in an AC motor drive system. In this paper, a three-phase motor drive system supplied with a single-phase AC-DC diode rectifier is investigated in order to reduce shaft voltage in a three-phase AC motor drive system. In this topology, the common mode voltage generated by the inverter is influenced by the AC-DC diode rectifier because the placement of the neutral point is changing in different rectifier circuit states. A pulse width modulation technique is presented by a proper placement of the zero vectors to reduce the common mode voltage level, which leads to a cost effective shaft voltage reduction technique without load current distortion, while keeping the switching frequency constant. Analysis and simulations have been presented to investigate the proposed method.

This study deals with the analysis of the parameters that are effective in shaft voltage generation of induction generators. It focuses on different parasitic capacitive couplings by mathematical equations, finite-element simulations and experiments. The effects of different design parameters have been studied on proposed capacitances and resultant shaft voltage. Some parameters can change proposed capacitive coupling such as stator slot tooth, the gap between slot tooth and winding and the height of the slot tooth, as well as the air gap between the rotor and the stator. This analysis can be used in a primary stage of a generator design to reduce motor shaft voltage and to avoid additional costs of resultant bearing current mitigation.

This paper describes protection and control of a microgrid with converter interfaced micro sources. The proposed protection and control scheme consider both grid connected and autonomous operation of the microgrid. A protection scheme, capable of detecting faults effectively in both grid connected and islanded operations is proposed. The main challenge of the protection, due to current limiting state of the converters is overcome by using admittance relays. The relays operate according to the inverse time characteristic based on measured admittance of the line. The proposed scheme isolates the fault from both sides, while downstream side of the microgrid operates in islanding condition. Moreover faults can be detected in autonomous operation. In grid connected mode distributed generators (DG) supply the rated power while in absence of the grid, DGs share the entire power requirement proportional to rating based on output voltage angle droop control. The protection scheme ensures minimum load shedding with isolating the faulted network and DG control provides a smooth islanding and resynchronization operation. The efficacy of coordinated control and protection scheme has been validated through simulation for various operating conditions.

In this paper, the stability of an autonomous microgrid with multiple distributed generators (DG) is studied through eigenvalue analysis. It is assumed that all the DGs are connected through Voltage Source Converter (VSC) and all connected loads are passive. The VSCs are controlled by state feedback controller to achieve desired voltage and current outputs that are decided by a droop controller. The state space models of each of the converters with its associated feedback are derived. These are then connected with the state space models of the droop, network and loads to form a homogeneous model, through which the eigenvalues are evaluated. The system stability is then investigated as a function of the droop controller real and reac-tive power coefficients. These observations are then verified through simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC. It will be shown that the simulation results closely agree with stability be-havior predicted by the eigenvalue analysis.

This paper describes the operation of a microgrid that contains a custom power park (CPP). The park may contain an unbalanced and/or nonlinear load and the microgrid may contain many dis-tributed generators (DGs). One of the DGs in the microgrid is used as a compensator to achieve load compensation. A new method is proposed for current reference generation for load compensation, which takes into account the real and reactive power to be supplied by the DG connected to the compensator. The real and reactive power from the DGs and the utility source is tightly regulated assuming that dedicated communication channels are available. Therefore this scheme is most suitable in cases where the loads in CPP and DGs are physically located close to each other. The proposal is validated through extensive simulation studies using EMTDC/PSCAD software package (version 4.2).

Isolation of a faulted segment, from either side of a fault, in a radial feeder that has several converter interfaced DGs is a challenging task when current sensing protective devices are employed. The protective device, even if it senses a downstream fault, may not operate if fault current level is low due to the current limiting operation of converters. In this paper, a new inverse type relay is introduced based on line admittance measurement to protect a distribution network, which has several converter interfaced DGs. The basic operation of this relay, its grading and reach settings are explained. Moreover a method is proposed to compensate the fault resistance such that the relay operation under this condition is reliable. Then designed relay performances are evaluated in a radial distribution network. The results are validated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and MATLAB calculations.

This paper presents a high voltage pulsed power system based on low voltage switch-capacitor units connected to a current source for several applications such as plasma systems. A buck-boost converter topology is used to utilize the current source and a series of low voltage switch-capacitor units is connected to the current source in order to provide high voltage with high voltage stress (dv/dt) as demanded by loads. This pulsed power converter is flexible in terms of energy control, in that the stored energy in the current source can be adjusted by changing the current magnitude to significantly improve the efficiency of various systems with different requirements. Output voltage magnitude and stress (dv/dt) can be controlled by a proper selection of components and control algorithm to turn on and off switching devices.
