Abstract

In this paper, gelation phenomenonduring the crystallization processof cefotaxime sodium (CTX) is systematically studied. First, the gelationprocess is monitored using a nanoparticle size analyzer; the gel andxerogel are studied by different characterization tools to speculatethe gelation mechanism. It is found that the gelation is driven bythe crystallization of CTX and the nanoparticles act as gelators beforethey can be seen by the naked eye. Moreover, the solid-solution interfacialtension used to predict the rate of crystal growth is calculated usingthe induction periods and solvents are classified using the Hansensolubility parameters method, according to whether it can be gelatedby CTX. It is shown that the strong polar interaction between solventmolecules and the carboxyl, amine, or acyl groups exposed on the CTXcrystal surface is the key factor for gelation.
