Abstract

Tris(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)polysulfonemethylene quaternary phosphonium chloride (TPQP-Cl) was blended with polysulfone (PSf) in different compositions to fabricate PSf/TPQP-Cl composite ultrafiltration membranes using the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. The blending of polymers was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies of membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM images showed that the PSf/TPQP-Cl membranes had a typical asymmetric structure. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle analysis revealed the enrichment of TPQP-Cl in the supporting layer of the membrane. In addition, water content, porosity, contact angle, pure water flux, and molecular weight cutoff were measured to study the influence of addition of TPQP-Cl. In particular, the addition of TPQP-Cl led to greatly increased water flux without significantly increased molecular weight cutoff; the PSf/TPQP-Cl membranes exhibited up to 7.3 times higher water flux than the pure PSf membrane at similar rejection properties. This work provides an effective way to tailor ultrafiltration membrane structure to achieve high flux while maintaining rejection properties.

Abstract

A novel carbonaceous poly(furfuryl alcohol) (CPFA) membrane was fabricated by partially carbonizing a poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) layer supported on a commercial polysulfone substrate with high-concentration sulfuric acid at room temperature. Gas permeation experiments suggested that the PFA membrane became microporous after sulfuric acid treatment. ATR-IR spectra showed that the furan structure of PFA was degraded by the high-concentration sulfuric acid, forming CPFA. As compared with the PFA membrane, the CPFA membrane exhibited significantly enhanced chlorine resistance and water desalination properties. The CPFA membrane had a salt rejection of around 93.3% and a water permeability of 1.54 L·μm·m−2·h−1·bar−1. After the chlorine treatment, the CPFA membrane exhibited a salt rejection of 73.7% and a water permeability of 2.01 L·μm·m−2·h−1·bar−1, whereas the PFA membrane had a salt rejection of only 60.1% and a water permeability of 0.17 L·μm·m−2·h−1·bar−1.

Abstract

This paper presents the preparation of crystalline mesoporous titanias using furfuryl alcohol as a polymerizable solvent and titanium(IV) butoxide as a titania source. In the synthesis, furfuryl alcohol (FA) initially stabilized titanium(IV) butoxide through alcohol exchange reaction, and then highly crosslinked poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA), formed via thermal polymerization of FA, served as a temporary barrier to confine titania crystallization. The crystalline mesoporous titanias were finally obtained by removing PFA and organic surfactant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2-sorption were used to characterize the crystalline mesoporous titanias. The characterizations showed that the crystalline mesoporous titanias prepared under different conditions possessed pore sizes of 11.1−23.6 nm and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) surface areas of 26.1−109.9 m2/g. The pore size and surface area of crystalline mesoporous titania increased when the ratio of titanium(IV) butoxide to furfuryl alcohol decreased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
