Abstract

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coliserotypes were searched for in feces of 550 children with endemic diarrhea and in 129 controls, in São Paulo, in 1978 and 1979; serotypes O111ab:H−, O111ab:H2, and O119:H6 were significantly associated with diarrhea in children 0 to 5 months old and were the most frequent agents of diarrhea in this age group as compared with enterotoxigenic and enteroinvasive E. coli, Salmonellasp., Shigellasp., and Yersinia enterocolitica.It is concluded that various enteropathogenic E. coliserotypes may be agents of endemic infantile diarrhea.
