The 1970s could have been the launching point of high-performance bibliographic data bases. The Lehigh Automatic Device for Efficient Retrieval implemented at the Mart Science and Engineering Library (Leadermart) was ackowledged as the most sophisticated information system available then, utilizing a user-friendly entry system. Commercial considerations, however, led to the acceptance of less powerful systems which may have set back information systems development by 20 years.
