This article announces the plan of the Institute of Paper Chemistry to begin coverage of Chinese patents of interest to pulp, paper and board industries as of April 1988. Through an agreement with International Patent Documentation Center (INPADOC), the patents published in China will be available in the PaperChem database and in the printed version, the Abstract Bulletin of The Institute of Paper Chemistry. Patent coverage will begin with those published in 1987. Currently, patents account for 42% of the records in PaperChem. They cover all areas of interest to the pulp and paper industry, including such diverse topics as forestry, paper making, and corrosion. The PaperChem database covers literature from 1967 to present and contains 250,000 records.

Information about the events and topics discussed during the 12th annual iConference, held at the Wuhan University School of Information Management in China on March 22-25, 2017, is presented. The conference was held in collaboration with Sungkyungkwan University’s Library & Information Science and Data Science Department. Also, in Australia, a new search engine has been launched that claims to offer more precise and personalized searching. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, Creative Commons, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a body of creative works that are free to be copied and reused, has announced that it's information discussions to expand its International Commons project to China and Taiwan.

Susan Hallam from Nottingham Trent University, Great Britain, led a well received half day seminar on "Strategic Use of the Internet: Resource Evaluation." There was also a round-table discussion for information providers.

And with an economy growing at more than 9 percent per year, China is moving up quickly on the list of the world's largest economies. In fact, it recently overtook Italy for sixth position on the list. In comparison, figures reported by the World Economic and Social Survey 2004 in January 2005 showed that the economies of the European Union and the U.S. are growing in the 2- to 3-percent range. Details of China's increasing consumption of agricultural and industrial goods were summarized in a report by the Washington, D.C.-based Earth Policy Institute. Aside from rates for basic commodities, such as food, energy, steel, and oil, the report showed figures for personal computers and cell phones. China is doubling the number of computers in use every 28 months and is expected shortly to exceed those in the U.S. Its number of cell phones in use (300 million) already surpasses the number in the U.S. (159 millions). China's population of Internet users exceeded 90 million in 2004, with 42.8 million using broadband and 13.7 million using Digital Subscriber Line broadband.

This article reports on a contract signed by West Newton, Massachusetts-based CLSI Inc. in February 1987 to automate the circulation system for the National Library of China in Beijing. The CLSI System will use a Sinoterm III intelligent terminal for Chinese character data entry. CLSI plans to start system installation for database development in March and will reinstall the system when the library moves into brand new facilities in October. The circulating collection to be automated by the CLSI System will be a model for open-stack access by the public.
