Abstract

The article highlights the author's favorite open search tools for finding open arts and humanities content. Topics discussed include the JURN search tool, which discovers the full text of open journals in the arts and humanities; the sister tool of JURN called GRAFT, which searches the world's academic repositories, and the extremely poor semantic interpretation of queries resulting in subsequent slowing down of Paperity, a multidisciplinary aggregator of OA journals and papers.

Abstract

The article features the new Engineering Library of Stanford University. The new Engineering Library has been designed to accommodate the modifications in the engineering curriculum as it evolves to include tightly integrated information discovery and retrieval component. One of the most striking features of the library, the author says, is its readiness for the transition from paper textbooks and periodicals to digital formats and one advantage of the change is that all authorized users are provided the same level of access whether onsite or offsite.

The article presents the e-book trends in the publishing industry as reported in a survey conducted by Aptara, Inc., a provider of content production and digital publishing services. It says that trade publishers ranked the highest in boosting their e-book initiatives where production jumped by 26% from 2009 to 2011. It also announces the initial release of O'Reilly Media, Inc.'s Tool of Change (TOC) white paper series, "The Global eBook Market: Current Conditions & Future Projections."
