Building on an existing process of exchanging subscription data from some publishers with Ingenta, Swets joins a number of other key subscription agents in providing Ingenta with their data in order that a library's access can be reconciled automatically using Ingenta's unique authentication system. 98 percent of the 260 publishers represented by Ingenta have agreed to follow this process and trust the data supplied by their agents, Swets and Ingenta confirmed that they will work together this way. Using this process, libraries have seamless, pre-configured access via Ingenta to their journals purchased through subscription agents. With other Web services, libraries have to manually communicate each of the titles they subscribe to in order to activate online access. Libraries can simply instruct their agents to send Ingenta their subscriptions lists for an immediate online access.

This article focuses on the security concerns over the emerging broadband technology, and its implications for the Internet service providers for dial-up access in the U.S. such as AOL. Once the easiest way to get online, AOL became the Internet itself for the U.S. market. It offers a contained and relatively stable space for online access. And compared to the wide-open public Web, it promises more safety to its users. With every new AOL release come new features to protect users, including parental controls, spam reporting and filtering, and other add-ons. During its peak period, AOL boasted 26.5 million subscribers in the U.S. alone. However, as of June 2004, the number of AOL subscribers declined from its peak by 3 million, and the company said the decline could only be expected to continue. The reason for the decline is broadband migration. According to a study partially funded by AOL and the National Cyber Security Alliance, there is more to safety than the safe haven offered by AOL. The study released in late October 2004, showed that most Internet users are not on computers protected by firewalls, and most are not running up-to-date virus detection software. Two-thirds have not updated their virus definitions in the past 7 days. The study also showed that many have computers that are infected with adware and spyware programs. A latest AOL advertising campaign is playing up the threat of computer infection and promising a solution as part of the subscription.

The United States Library of Congress announced the launch of the Election 2002 Web Archive, the world's first fully cataloged and searchable collection of material that originates in digital form. The collection, commissioned by the Library of Congress, includes more than 1,100 archived Web sites from political candidates who ran for House and Senate seats and governorships in 2002. It contains more than 3,000 unique uniform resource locators, 1.3 terabytes of data, and almost 50 million Web objects.
