This paper considers the problem of finding maximum volume (axis-aligned) inscribed boxes in a compact convex set, defined by a finite number of convex inequalities, and presents optimization and geometric approaches for solving them. Several optimization models are developed that can be easily generalized to find other inscribed geometric shapes such as triangles, rhombi, and squares. To find the largest volume axis-aligned inscribed rectangles in the higher dimensions, an interior-point method algorithm is presented and analyzed. For two-dimensional space, a parametrized optimization approach is developed to find the largest area (axis-aligned) inscribed rectangles in convex sets. The optimization approach provides a uniform framework for solving a wide variety of relevant problems. Finally, two computational geometric (1−ε) –approximation algorithms with sublinear running times are presented that improve the previous results. Rank aggregation combines the preference rankings of multiple alternatives from different voters into a single consensus ranking, providing a useful model for a variety of practical applications but posing a computationally challenging problem. In this paper, we provide an effective hybrid evolutionary ranking algorithm to solve the rank aggregation problem with both complete and partial rankings. The algorithm features a semantic crossover based on concordant pairs and an enhanced late acceptance local search method reinforced by a relaxed acceptance and replacement strategy and a fast incremental evaluation mechanism. Experiments are conducted to assess the algorithm, indicating a highly competitive performance on both synthetic and real-world benchmark instances compared with state-of-the-art algorithms. To demonstrate its practical usefulness, the algorithm is applied to label ranking, a well-established machine learning task. This paper presents an effective perturbation-based thresholding search for two popular and challenging packing problems with minimal containers: packing N identical circles in a square and packing N identical spheres in a cube. Following the penalty function approach, we handle these constrained optimization problems by solving a series of unconstrained optimization subproblems with fixed containers. The proposed algorithm relies on a two-phase search strategy that combines a thresholding search method reinforced by two general-purpose perturbation operators and a container adjustment method. The performance of the algorithm is assessed relative to a large number of benchmark instances widely studied in the literature. Computational results show a high performance of the algorithm on both problems compared with the state-of-the-art results. For circle packing, the algorithm improves 156 best-known results (new upper bounds) in the range of 2 ≤ N ≤ 400 and matches 242 other best-known results. For sphere packing, the algorithm improves 66 best-known results in the range of 2 ≤ N ≤ 200 , whereas matching the best-known results for 124 other instances. Experimental analyses are conducted to shed light on the main search ingredients of the proposed algorithm consisting of the two-phase search strategy, the mixed perturbation and the parameters. Theoretical studies on evolutionary algorithms have developed vigorously in recent years. Many such algorithms have theoretical guarantees in both running time and approximation ratio. Some approximation mechanism seems to be inherently embedded in many evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, we identify such a relation by proposing a unified analysis framework for a global simple multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (GSEMO) and apply it on a minimum weight general cover problem, which is general enough to subsume many important problems including the minimum submodular cover problem in which the submodular function is real-valued, and the minimum connected dominating set problem for which the potential function is nonsubmodular. We show that GSEMO yields theoretically guaranteed approximation ratios matching those achievable by a greedy algorithm in expected polynomial time when the potential function g is polynomial in the input size and the minimum gap between different g-values is a constant. In this paper, we study the classic submodular maximization problem subject to a group equality constraint under both nonadaptive and adaptive settings. It is shown that the utility function of many machine learning applications, including data summarization, influence maximization in social networks, and personalized recommendation, satisfies the property of submodularity. Hence, maximizing a submodular function subject to various constraints can be found at the heart of many of those applications. On a high level, submodular maximization aims to select a group of most representative items (e.g., data points). However, the design of most existing algorithms does not incorporate the fairness constraint, leading to underrepresentation or overrepresentation of some particular groups. This motivates us to study the submodular maximization problem with group equality, in which we aim to select a group of items to maximize a (possibly nonmonotone) submodular utility function subject to a group equality constraint. To this end, we develop the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for this problem. The design of our algorithm is robust enough to be extended to solving the submodular maximization problem under a more complicated adaptive setting. Decomposition techniques are an important component of modern heuristics for large instances of vehicle routing problems. The current literature lacks a characterization of decomposition strategies and a systematic investigation of their impact when integrated into state-of-the-art heuristics. This paper fills this gap: We discuss the main characteristics of decomposition techniques in vehicle routing heuristics, highlight their strengths and weaknesses, and derive a set of desirable properties. Through an extensive numerical campaign, we investigate the impact of decompositions within two algorithms for the capacitated vehicle routing problem: the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search of Pisinger and Ropke (2007) and the Hybrid Genetic Search of Vidal et al. (2012). We evaluate the quality of popular decomposition techniques from the literature and propose new strategies. We find that route-based decomposition methods, which define subproblems by means of the customers contained in selected subsets of the routes of a given solution, generally appear superior to path-based methods, which merge groups of customers to obtain smaller subproblems. The newly proposed decomposition barycenter clustering achieves the overall best performance and leads to significant gains compared with using the algorithms without decomposition. This study considers a well-known critical node detection problem that aims to minimize a pairwise connectivity measure of an undirected graph via the removal of a subset of nodes (referred to as critical nodes) subject to a cardinality constraint. Potential applications include epidemic control, emergency response, vulnerability assessment, carbon emission monitoring, network security, and drug design. To solve the problem, we present a "reduce-solve-combine" memetic search approach that integrates a problem reduction mechanism into the popular population-based memetic algorithm framework. At each generation, a common pattern mined from two parent solutions is first used to reduce the given problem instance, then the reduced instance is solved by a component-based hybrid neighborhood search that effectively combines an articulation point impact strategy and a node weighting strategy, and finally an offspring solution is produced by combining the mined common pattern and the solution of the reduced instance. Extensive evaluations on 42 real-world and synthetic benchmark instances show the efficacy of the proposed method, which discovers nine new upper bounds and significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art algorithms. Investigation of key algorithmic modules additionally discloses the importance of the proposed ideas and strategies. Finally, we demonstrate the generality of the proposed method via its adaptation to solve the node-weighted critical node problem. A multidepot capacitated vehicle routing problem aims to serve customers' demands using a fleet of capacitated vehicles located in multiple depots, such that the total travel cost of the vehicles is minimized. We study a variant of this problem, the k-depot split delivery vehicle routing problem (or k-DSDVRP in short), for the situation where each customer's demand can be served by more than one vehicle, and the total number of depots, denoted by k ≥ 2 , is a fixed constant. This is a challenging problem with broad applications in the logistics industry, for which no constant ratio approximation algorithm is known. We develop a new approximation algorithm for the k-DSDVRP, ensuring an approximation ratio of (6 − 4 / k) and a polynomial running time for any fixed constant k ≥ 2. To achieve this, we propose a novel solution framework based on a new relaxation of the problem, a cycle splitting procedure, and a vehicle assignment procedure. To further enhance its efficiency for practical usage, we adapt the newly developed approximation algorithm to a heuristic, which runs in polynomial time even when k is arbitrarily large. Experimental results show that this heuristic outperforms a commercial optimization solver and a standard vehicle routing heuristic. Moreover, our newly proposed solution framework can be applied to developing new constant ratio approximation algorithms for several other variants of the k-DSDVRP with k ≥ 2 being a fixed constant. Suppose a target is hidden in one of the vertices of an edge-weighted graph according to a known probability distribution. Starting from a fixed root node, an expanding search visits the vertices sequentially until it finds the target, where the next vertex can be reached from any of the previously visited vertices. That is, the time to reach the next vertex equals the shortest-path distance from the set of all previously visited vertices. The expanding search problem then asks for a sequence of the nodes, so as to minimize the expected time to finding the target. This problem has numerous applications, such as searching for hidden explosives, mining coal, and disaster relief. In this paper, we develop exact algorithms and heuristics, including a branch-and-cut procedure, a greedy algorithm with a constant-factor approximation guarantee, and a local search procedure based on a spanning-tree neighborhood. Computational experiments show that our branch-and-cut procedure outperforms existing methods for instances with nonuniform probability distributions and that both our heuristics compute near-optimal solutions with little computational effort. This paper studies a multiproduct newsvendor problem with customer-driven demand substitution, where each product, once run out of stock, can be proportionally substituted by the others. This problem has been widely studied in the literature; however, because of nonconvexity and intractability, only limited analytical properties have been reported and no efficient approaches have been proposed. This paper first completely characterizes the optimal order policy when the demand is known and reformulates this nonconvex problem as a binary quadratic program. When the demand is random, we formulate the problem as a two-stage stochastic integer program, derive several necessary optimality conditions, prove the submodularity of the profit function, and also develop polynomial-time approximation algorithms and show their performance guarantees. We further propose a tight upper bound via nonanticipativity dual, which is proven to be very close to the optimal value and can yield a good-quality feasible solution under a mild condition. Our numerical investigation demonstrates effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Moreover, several useful findings and managerial insights are revealed from a series of sensitivity analyses. We consider a large family of problems in which an ordering (or, more precisely, a chain of subsets) of a finite set must be chosen to minimize some weighted sum of costs. This family includes variations of min sum set cover, several scheduling and search problems, and problems in Boolean function evaluation. We define a new problem, called the min sum ordering problem (MSOP), which generalizes all these problems using a cost and a weight function defined on subsets of a finite set. Assuming a polynomial time α-approximation algorithm for the problem of finding a subset whose ratio of weight to cost is maximal, we show that under very minimal assumptions, there is a polynomial time 4 α -approximation algorithm for MSOP. This approximation result generalizes a proof technique used for several distinct problems in the literature. We apply this to obtain a number of new approximation results. Summary of Contribution: This paper provides a general framework for min sum ordering problems. Within the realm of theoretical computer science, these problems include min sum set cover and its generalizations, as well as problems in Boolean function evaluation. On the operations research side, they include problems in search theory and scheduling. Finding a connected dominating set (CDS) in a given graph is a fundamental problem and has been studied intensively for a long time because of its application in computer science and operations research, e.g., connected facility location and wireless networks. In some cases, fault-tolerance is desirable. Taking wireless networks as an example, since wireless nodes may fail due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable that the virtual backbone has some fault-tolerance. Such a problem can be modeled as finding a minimum k-connected m-fold dominating set ((k, m)-CDS) of a graph G (V, E), which is a node set D such that every node outside of D has at least m neighbors in D and the subgraph of G induced by D is k-connected. In this paper, we study the minimum weight (1, m)-CDS problem ((1, m)-MWCDS), and present an (H(δ+ m)+2H(δ-1))- approximation algorithm, where δ is the maximum degree of the graph and H( · ) is the Harmonic number. Notice that the state-of-the-art algorithm achieves O(ln(n))-approximation factor for the (1, 1)-MWCDS problem, where n is the number of nodes. Our work improves this ratio to O(ln δ) for an even more general problem: (1, m)-MWCDS. Such an improvement also enables us to obtain a (3.67 + α)-approximation for the (1, m)-MWCDS problem on unit disk graph, where α is the performance ratio for the minimum weight m-fold dominating set problem on unit disk graph. Algorithms for approximating the nondominated set of multiobjective optimization problems are reviewed. The approaches are categorized into general methods that are applicable under mild assumptions and, thus, to a wide range of problems, and into algorithms that are specifically tailored to structured problems. All in all, this survey covers 52 articles published within the last 41 years, that is, between 1979 and 2020. Summary of Contribution: In many problems in operations research, several conflicting objective functions have to be optimized simultaneously, and one is interested in finding Pareto optimal solutions. Because of the high complexity of finding Pareto optimal solutions and their usually very large number, however, the exact solution of such multiobjective problems is often very difficult, which motivates the study of approximation algorithms for multiobjective optimization problems. This research area uses techniques and methods from algorithmics and computing in order to efficiently determine approximate solutions to many well-known multiobjective problems from operations research. Even though approximation algorithms for multiobjective optimization problems have been investigated for more than 40 years and more than 50 research articles have been published on this topic, this paper provides the first survey of this important area at the intersection of computing and operations research. In this paper, we address two models of nondeterministic discrete time finite-horizon dynamic programs (DPs): implicit stochastic DPs (the information about the random events is given by value oracles to their cumulative distribution functions) and sample-based DPs (the information about the random events is deduced by drawing random samples). Such data-driven models frequently appear in practice, where the cumulative distribution functions of the underlying random variables are either unavailable or too complicated to work with. In both models, the single-period cost functions are accessed via value oracle calls and assumed to possess either monotone or convex structure. We develop the first near-optimal relative approximation schemes for each of the two models. Applications in stochastic inventory control (that is, several variants of the so-called newsvendor problem) are discussed in detail. One ultimate goal of wireless sensor networks is to collect the sensed data from a set of sensors and transmit them to some sink node via a data gathering tree. In this work, we are interested in data aggregation, where the sink node wants to know the value for a certain function of all sensed data, such as minimum, maximum, average, and summation. Given a data aggregation tree, sensors receive messages from children periodically, merge them with its own packet, and send the new packet to its parent. The problem of finding an aggregation tree with the maximum lifetime has been proved to be NP-hard and can be generalized to finding a spanning tree with the minimum maximum vertex load, where the load of a vertex is a nondecreasing function of its degree in the tree. Although there is a rich body of research in those problems, they either fail to meet a theoretical bound or need high running time. In this paper, we develop a novel algorithm with provable performance bounds for the generalized problem. We show that the running time of our algorithm is in the order of O( mnα( m, n)), where m is the number of edges, n is the number of sensors, and α is the inverse Ackerman function. Though our work is motivated by applications in sensor networks, the proposed algorithm is general enough to handle a wide range of degree-oriented spanning tree problems, including bounded degree spanning tree problem and minimum degree spanning tree problem. Electric power generation expansion planning (GEP) is the problem of determining an optimal construction and generation plan of both new and existing electric power plants to meet future electricity demand. We consider a stochastic optimization approach for this capacity expansion problem under demand and fuel price uncertainty. In a two-stage stochastic optimization model for GEP, the capacity expansion plan for the entire planning horizon is decided prior to the uncertainty realized and hence allows no adaptivity to uncertainty evolution over time. In comparison, a multistage stochastic optimization model allows full adaptivity to the uncertainty evolution but is extremely difficult to solve. To reconcile the trade-off between adaptivity and tractability, we propose a partially adaptive stochastic mixed integer optimization model in which the capacity expansion plan is fully adaptive to the uncertainty evolution up to a certain period and follows the two-stage approach thereafter. Any solution to the partially adaptive model is feasible to the multistage model, and we provide analytical bounds on the quality of such a solution. We propose an efficient algorithm that solves a sequence of partially adaptive models, to recursively construct an approximate solution to the multistage problem. We identify sufficient conditions under which this algorithm recovers an optimal solution to the multistage problem. Finally, we conduct extensive test of our algorithm on a realistic GEP problem. Access control mechanisms in software systems administer user privileges by granting users permission to perform certain operations while denying unauthorized access to others. Such mechanisms are essential to ensure that important business functions in an organization are conducted securely and smoothly. Currently, the dominant access control approach in most major software systems is role-based access control. In this approach, permissions are first assigned to roles, and users acquire permissions by becoming members of certain roles. However, given the dynamic nature of organizations, a fixed set of roles usually cannot meet the demands that users (existing or new) have to conduct business. The typical response to this problem is to myopically create new roles to meet immediate demand that cannot be satisfied by an existing set of roles. This ad hoc creation of roles invariably leads to a proliferation in the number of roles with the accompanying administrative overhead. Based on discussions with practitioners, we propose a role refinement scheme that reconstructs a system of roles to reduce the cost of role management. We first show that the role-refinement problem is strongly NP-hard and then provide two polynomial-time approximation algorithms (a greedy algorithm and a randomized rounding algorithm) and establish their performance guarantees. Finally, numerical experiments--based on a real data set from a firm's enterprise resource planning system--are conducted to demonstrate the applicability and performance of our refinement scheme.
