Ground-state and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations with the long-range-corrected, Coulomb-attenuating CAMY-B3LYP exchange-correlation functional and large, all-electron STO-TZ2P basis sets have been used to examine the potential "inverse hypercorrole" character of meso-p -nitrophenyl-appended dicyanidocobalt(III) corrole dianions. The effect is most dramatic for 5,15-bis( p -nitrophenyl) derivatives, where it manifests itself in intense NIR absorptions. The 10-aryl groups in these complexes play a modulatory role, as evinced by experimental UV-visible spectroscopic and electrochemical data for a series of 5,15-bis( p -nitrophenyl) dicyanidocobalt(III) corroles. TDDFT (CAMY-B3LYP) calculations ascribe these features clearly to a transition from the corrole's a 2u -like HOMO (retaining the D 4h irrep used for metalloporphyrins) to a nitrophenyl-based LUMO. The outward nature of this transition contrasts with the usual phenyl-to-macrocycle direction of charge transfer transitions in many hyperporphyrins and hypercorroles; thus, the complexes studied are aptly described as inverse hypercorroles.

A mono-DMSO cobalt meso -CF 3 corrole, formulated as (CF 3 ) 3 CorCo(DMSO), where (CF 3 ) 3 Cor is the trianion of 5,10,15-tris(trifluoromethyl)corrole, was synthesized and characterized as to its spectral and electrochemical properties in nonaqueous media with a focus on its coordination chemistry and electronic structure. Cyclic voltammetric measurements showed more facile reductions and difficult oxidations compared to the cobalt triarylcorrole possessing p -CF 3 Ph units at the meso -positions, a result consistent with the enhanced inductive effect of the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl substituents linked directly at the meso -carbon atoms of the macrocycle. The effects of DMSO, pyridine, and cyanide anions (CN - ) on the electrochemistry and spectral properties of the compound were investigated, and it was found that only two molar equivalents are needed to form the bis-CN adduct, which exhibited two 1-electron oxidations at 0.27 and 0.95 V vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE) in CH 2 Cl 2 /0.1 M TBAP. The sites of electron transfer in the first oxidation and reduction were investigated by spectroelectrochemistry and confirmed that the first electron addition affords a Cor 3- Co II complex under all solution conditions independent of the initial coordination and/or electronic configuration ( i.e ., innocent Cor 3- Co III or noninnocent Cor •2- Co II ). In contrast, data for the first oxidation suggests that the site of electron abstraction (ligand or metal) depended upon coordination of the neutral and in situ generated complexes under the various solution conditions, leading to a Co(IV)-corrole 3- product for both the bis-pyridine and bis-cyanide adducts.

A series of cobalt nitrophenylcorroles were spectrally characterized in CH 2 Cl 2 , and under certain solution conditions, several compounds were shown to exhibit hypercorrole spectra resulting from charge transfer interactions from the corrole π-system to the redox-active meso -NO 2 Ph substituents. The resulting spectral pattern has not previously been reported for metallocorroles and in the case of the cobalt derivatives was shown to depend upon the number and position of the meso -nitrophenyl groups on the macrocycle, the position of the NO 2 substituent on the meso -phenyl ring(s) ( para or meta ), and the electronic structure of the corrole, which can exist in its innocent or noninnocent form depending in large part upon the type and number of axial ligands. Cobalt corroles bearing p -nitrophenyl groups at the 5,15- or 5,10,15-positions of the macrocycle exhibited the most marked hypercorrole spectra under solution conditions where the complex was innocent (i.e., Cor 3- Co III ), and a systematic analysis of the spectral data suggests the root of this perturbation to be a corrole-to-aryl interaction (i.e., ligand-to-ligand charge transfer or LLCT). The largest interaction between the π-system and the NO 2 Ph substituents was seen upon coordination of anionic cyanide (CN - ) axial ligands to the Co(III) center of the bis-(CN - )-5,15-dinitrophenyl derivative, resulting in a cobalt hypercorrole spectrum where the broad Q-band was red-shifted even further into the NIR region and located at 795 nm in CH 2 Cl 2 and 827 nm in pyridine. Cyclic voltammetry of the bis-CN - adducts showed that the first electrons are added to the LUMOs of the p -NO 2 Ph substituents rather than the corrole, while the same orbitals for the mono-CN - adducts are nearly degenerate. This redox behavior contrasts with what is seen for the noninnocent nitrophenyl corroles having "normal" unperturbed UV-vis spectra where the first reduction involves the π-system of the macrocycle, followed by reduction of the p -NO 2 Ph groups at more negative potentials.

A series of "N 2 O 2 -type" manganese dipyrrin-bisphenols (DPP), formulated as (Ar)DPPMn, where Ar = pentafluorophenyl (F 5 Ph), phenyl (Ph), or mesityl (Mes), were electrochemically and spectroscopically characterized in nonaqueous media with and without added anions in the form of tetrabutylammonium salts (TBAX where X = ClO 4 - , PF 6 - , BF 4 - , F - , Cl - , OH - , or CN - ). Two major one-electron reductions are observed under most solution conditions, the first of which is assigned as a Mn III/II process and the second as electron addition to the π-ring system as confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry. Each Mn III complex also exhibits one or two one-electron oxidations, the exact number depending upon the positive potential limit of the electrochemical solvent. The two oxidations are separated by 580-590 mV in CH 3 CN containing 0.1 M TBAPF 6 and are assigned as π-ring-centered electron transfers to stepwise form a (Ar)DPPMn III π-cation radical and dication under these solution conditions. Comparisons are made between redox properties of (Ar)DPPMn and manganese(III) porphyrins, corroles, and corrolazines each of which contains an innocent trianionic complexing ligand. The redox behavior and spectroscopic properties of [(Ar)DPPMn] n where n = 0, -1, or +1 are also compared to that of other structurally related [(Ar)DPPM] n complexes under similar solution conditions where M = Co II , Cu II , B III , or Au III .

Three mono-CN ligated anionic cobalt A 3 -triarylcorroles were synthesized and investigated as to their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties in CH 2 Cl 2 , pyridine (Py), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The newly synthesized corroles provide the first examples of air-stable cobalt corroles with an anionic axial ligand and are represented as [(Ar) 3 CorCo III (CN)] - TBA + , where Cor is the trivalent corrole macrocycle, Ar is p -(CN)Ph, p -(CF 3 )Ph, or p -(OMe)Ph, and TBA + is the tetra- n -butylammonium (TBA) cation. Multiple redox reactions are observed for each mono-CN derivative with a key feature being a more facile first oxidation and a more difficult first reduction in all three solvents as compared to all previously examined corroles with similar meso- and β-pyrrole substituents. Formation constants (log K ) for conversion of the five-coordinate mono-CN complex to its six-coordinate bis-CN form ranged from 10 2.8 for Ar = p -(OMe)Ph to 10 4.7 for Ar = p -(CN)Ph in DMSO as determined by spectroscopic methodologies. The in situ generated bis-CN complexes, represented as [(Ar) 3 CorCo III (CN) 2 ] 2- (TBA + ) 2 , and the mixed ligand complexes, represented as [(Ar) 3 CorCo III (CN)(Py)] - TBA + , were also investigated as to their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties. UV-visible spectra and electrode reactions of the synthesized mono-CN derivatives are compared with the neutral mono-DMSO cobalt corrole complexes and the in situ generated bis-CN and bis-Py complexes, and the noninnocent (or innocent) nature of each cobalt corrole system is addressed. The data demonstrate the ability of the CN - axial ligand(s) to stabilize the high-valent forms of the metallocorrole, leading to systems with innocent macrocyclic ligands. Although a number of six-coordinate cobalt(III) corroles with N-donor ligands were characterized in the solid state, a dissociation of one axial ligand readily occurs in nonaqueous solvents, and this behavior contrasts with the high stability of the currently studied bis-CN adducts in CH 2 Cl 2 , pyridine, or DMSO. Linear free energy relationships were elucidated between the meso -phenyl Hammett substituent constants (Σσ) and the measured binding constants, the redox potentials, and the energy of the band positions in the mono-CN and bis-CN complexes in their neutral or singly oxidized forms, revealing highly predictable trends in the physicochemical properties of the anionic corroles.

A new series of cobalt A 3 -triarylcorroles were synthesized and the compounds examined as to their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties in CH 2 Cl 2 or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) containing 10 different anions added to the solution in the form of tetrabutylammonium salts. The investigated anions were PF 6 - , BF 4 - , HSO 4 - , ClO 4 - , Br - , I - , Cl - , OAc - , F - , OTs - , and CN - , all but three of which were found to facilitate reduction of the cobalt corrole in dilute CH 2 Cl 2 solutions, as determined by a combination of UV-vis spectroscopy and spectroelectrochemistry. The synthesized corroles are represented as (Ar) 3 CorCo(DMSO), where Ar is a meso -phenyl group containing one of 10 different electron-donating or -withdrawing substituents. The axial DMSO ligand was found to dissociate in dilute (10 -5 M) CH 2 Cl 2 solutions, but this was not the case at the higher electrochemical concentration of 10 -3 M, where the investigated corroles exhibit a rich redox reactivity, undergoing up to five reversible one-electron-transfer reactions under the different solution conditions. The reversible half-wave potentials for generation of the singly oxidized corroles varied by over 1.0 V with a change in the electron-donating or -withdrawing meso -phenyl substituents and type of anion added to the solution, ranging from E 1/2 = 0.83 V in one extreme to -0.42 V in the other. Much smaller shifts in the potentials (on the order of ∼210 mV) were observed for the reversible first reduction as a function of changes of the anion and/or corrole substituents, with the only exception being in the case of CN - , where the E 1/2 values in CH 2 Cl 2 ranged from +0.08 V in solutions containing 0.1 M TBAClO 4 to >-1.8 V upon the addition of CN - .

Three cobalt dipyrrin-bisphenol (DPPCo) complexes with different meso-aryl groups (pentafluorophenyl, phenyl, and mesityl) were synthesized and characterized based on their electrochemistry and spectroscopic properties in nonaqueous media. Each DPPCo undergoes multiple oxidations and reductions with the potentials, reversibility, and number of processes depending on the specific solution conditions, the specific macrocyclic substituents, and the type and number of axially coordinated ligands on the central cobalt ion. Theoretical calculations of the compounds with different coordination numbers are given in the current study in order to elucidate the cobalt-ion oxidation state and the innocence or noninnocence of the macrocyclic ligand as a function of the changes in the solvent properties and degree of axial coordination. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of the compounds are obtained to experimentally assess the electron spin state. An X-ray structure of the six-coordinate complex is also presented. The investigated chemical properties of DPPCo compounds under different solution conditions are compared to those of cobalt corroles, where the macrocycle and metal ion also possess formal 3- and 3+ oxidation states in their air-stable forms.

A series of bis(pyridine)cobalt corroles with one or three nitrophenyl groups on the meso positions of the corrole macrocycle were synthesized and characterized as to their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties in dichloromethane, benzonitrile, and pyridine. The potentials for each electrode reaction were measured by cyclic voltammetry and the electron-transfer mechanisms evaluated by analysis of the electrochemical data combined with UV-visible spectra of the neutral, electroreduced, and electroxidized forms of the corroles. The proposed electronic configurations of the initial compounds and the prevailing redox reactions involving the electroactive central cobalt ion, the electroactive conjugated macrocycle, and the electroactive meso-nitrophenyl groups are all discussed in terms of solvent binding and the number of the nitrophenyl groups and other substituents on the meso-nitrophenyl rings of the compounds.

The electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry of four tetrapositively charged and two tetranegatively charged porphyrins were characterized in two nonaqueous solvents (dimethyl sulfoxide and N,N-dimethylformamide) containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate. The tetrapositively charged compounds are represented by the tetrapyridylporphyrins [TRPyPM] 4+ (X - ) 4 , where R is a methyl or [2-[2-(2-methoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy]ethyl group, M = Mn III I, Mn III Cl, Cu II , or Pd II , and X = I - or Cl - . The tetranegatively charged porphyrins are represented by the tetrasulfonato derivatives [TPPSMn(OAc)] 4- (NH 4 + ) 4 and [TArPSMn(OAc)] 4- (NH 4 + ) 4 , where Ar = 4-O-[2-[2-(2-methoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy]ethylphenyl. Up to seven electrons can be added to the tetrapyridyl porphyrins in three to five reversible reductions, while up to four electrons can be added to the tetrasulfonato derivatives in four reversible processes. Three types of electrochemical behaviors are observed for reduction of the pyridinium groups on the tetrapyridyl porphyrins. One is for the manganese(II) complexes where the four equivalent pyridinium groups are reduced in a single overlapping four-electron-transfer step. Another is for the free-base porphyrin, where four well-separated one-electron reductions occur, while the third is for copper(II) and palladium(II) derivatives, where reduction of the four pyridinium groups proceeds in two well-separated two-electron-transfer steps. The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties were also characterized for a 1:1 mixture of the tetrapositively and tetranegatively charged manganese porphyrins to investigate possible interactions between these two species. An interaction between the two porphyrins was indeed observed in both solvents after electroreduction of the four pyridinium groups, which led to a substantial change in the mechanism for reduction of the pyridinium groups from an initial single overlapping four-electron-reduction process to two well-separated two-electron-transfer processes.

The C3-symmetric cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) was covalently bonded via click chemistry to 1, 2, 3, and 6 zinc(II) porphyrin units to various host for C60. The binding constants, Ka, were measured from the quenching of the porphyrin fluorescence by C60. These constants vary between 400 and 4000 M(-1) and are considered weak. Computer modeling demonstrated that the zinc(II) porphyrin units, [Zn], exhibit a strong tendency to occupy the CTV cavity, hence blocking the access for C60 to land on this site. Instead, the pincer of the type [Zn]----[Zn] and in one case [Zn]----CTV, were found to be the most probable geometry to promote host-guest associations in these systems.

Red (no styryl), green (monostyryl), and blue (distyryl) BODIPY-gallium(III) (BODIPY = boron-dipyrromethene) corrole dyads have been prepared in high yields using click chemistry, and their photophysical properties are reported. An original and efficient control of the direction of the singlet energy transfers is reported, going either from BODIPY to the gallium-corrole units or from gallium-corroles to BODIPY, depending upon the nature of the substitution on BODIPY. In one case (green), both directions are possible. The mechanism for the energy transfers is interpreted by means of through-space Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET).

A series of homobimetallic manganese cofacial porphyrin-corrole dyads were synthesized and investigated as to their electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and ligand binding properties in nonaqueous media. Four dyads were investigated, each of which contained a Mn(III) corrole linked in a face-to-face arrangement with a Mn(III) porphyrin. The main difference between compounds in the series is the type of spacer, 9,9-dimethylxanthene, anthracene, dibenzofuran, or diphenylether, which determines the distance and interaction between the metallomacrocycles. Each redox process of the porphyrin-corrole dyads was assigned on the basis of spectroscopic and electrochemical data and by comparison with reactions and properties of the monocorrole and the monoporphyrin which were examined under the same solution conditions. The Mn(III) porphyrin part of the dyad undergoes two major one-electron reductions in pyridine and benzonitrile, the first of which involves a Mn(III)/Mn(II) process and the second the addition of an electron to the conjugated π-ring system of the macrocycle. The Mn(III) corrole part of the dyads also exhibits two major redox processes, one involving Mn(III)/Mn(II) and the other Mn(III) to Mn(IV) under the same solution conditions. The potentials and reversibility of each electron transfer reaction were shown to depend upon the solvent, type of spacer separating the two macrocycles, and the presence or absence of axial ligation, the latter of which was investigated in detail for the case of acetate ion which was found to bind within the cavity of the dyad to both manganese centers, both before and after the stepwise electroreduction to the Mn(II) forms of the two macrocycles. An intramolecular chloride ion exchange between the porphyrin part of the dyads which contain Mn(III)Cl and the singly oxidized corrole in the dyad is observed after the Mn(III)/Mn(IV) reaction of the corrole, suggesting that chloride is coordinated inside the cavity in the neutral compound.

The synthesis and characterization of a new type of bisporphyrin system is reported where the two macrocycles are linked in a cofacial arrangement by a substituted carbazole bridge. The three nitrogen atoms of the carbazole bridge in the compounds may complex a metal ion and thus provide a new parameter for varying the physical properties and flexibility of the dyad after formation of a three-metal system. In the present study, four bis-metalloporphyrin complexes were synthesized and examined by electrochemistry and thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry in CH(2)Cl(2) and PhCN. Two of the examined compounds contain Cu(II) or Zn(II) porphyrins and a carbazole linker with a bound Cu(II) ion, giving a three metal system, while the other two examined compounds contained the same porphyrins but with a carbazole bridge which lacks the Cu(II) component. Since carbazoles and Cu(II) ions are both electroactive, redox properties of several unlinked carbazoles with and without bound Cu(II) ions were also examined as to their electrochemical behavior under the same solution conditions as the dyads to better understand the redox reactions which may occur at the carbazole group linking the two porphyrin macrocycles. Several mononuclear porphyrins with structures related to macrocycles in the dyads were also investigated.

A series of linear monomers (spacer-M(P)), dimers (M(P)-spacer-M'(P)), and trimers (M(P)-spacer-M'(P)-spacer-M(P)) of spacer/metalloporphyrin systems (M' = Zn, M = Zn, Pd, P = porphyrin, and spacer = trans-C(6)H(4)C[triple bond]CPtL(2)C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)- (L = PEt(3))) including mixed metalloporphyrin compounds, were synthesized and characterized. The S(1) and T(1) energy transfers Pd(P)*-->Zn(P) occur with rates of approximately 2 x 10(9) s(-1), S(1), and 0.15 x 10(3) (slow component) and 4.3 x 10(3) s(-1) (fast component), T(1). On the basis of a literature comparison with a related dyad, the Pt atom in the conjugated chain slows down the transfers. The excitation in the absorption band of the trans-C(6)H(4)C[triple bond]CPtL(2)C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)- spacer in the 300-360 nm range also leads to T(1) energy transfer (spacer* --> M(P); M = Zn, Pd) with rates of 10(4) s(-1).

A series of biscobalt cofacial porphyrin-corrole dyads bearing mesityl substituents at the meso positions of the corrole ring were investigated as to their electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and CO binding properties in nonaqueous media and then applied to the surface of a graphite electrode and tested as electrocatalysts for the reduction of dioxygen to water or hydrogen peroxide in air-saturated aqueous solutions containing 1 M HClO(4). The catalytic reduction of O(2) with the same dyads was also investigated in the homogeneous phase using 1,1'-dimethylferrocene as a reductant in PhCN containing HClO(4). The examined compounds are represented as (PMes(2)CY)Co(2), where P = a porphyrin dianion, Mes(2)C = a corrole trianion with two mesityl groups in trans meso-positions of the macrocycle, and Y is one of three bridging groups separating the two metallomacrocycles in a face-to-face arrangement, either with 9,9-dimethylxanthene, dibenzofuran, or diphenylether as linkers. Cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry revealed that the examined compounds are all catalytically active toward the electroreduction of dioxygen in acid media giving H(2)O(2) or H(2)O depending upon the type of linkage (Y) and the initial site of electron transfer which, in nonaqueous media, could be switched between the corrole and the porphyrin metal center by variations of substituents on the corrole macrocycle or the gas above the solution. The homogeneous reduction of dioxygen via a two- or four-electron transfer process was also investigated using 1,1'-dimethylferrocene as reductant in PhCN containing HClO(4).

A series of manganese(III) corroles were investigated as to their electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry in nonaqueous solvents. Up to three oxidations and one reduction were obtained for each complex depending on the solvents. The main compound discussed in this paper is the meso-substituted manganese corrole, (Mes 2PhCor)Mn, and the main points are how changes in axially coordinated anion and solvent will affect the redox potentials and UV-vis spectra of each electrogenerated species in oxidation states of Mn(III), Mn(IV), or Mn(II). The anions OAc (-), Cl (-), CN (-), and SCN (-) were found to form five-coordinate complexes with the neutral Mn(III) corrole while two OH (-) or F (-) anions were shown to bind axially in a stepwise addition to give the five- and six-coordinate complexes in nonaqueous media. In each case, complexation with one or two anionic axial ligands led to an easier oxidation and a harder reduction as compared to the uncomplexed four-coordinate species.

Co(III) corroles were investigated as efficient catalysts for the reduction of dioxygen in the presence of perchloric acid in both heterogeneous and homogeneous systems. The investigated compounds are (5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole)cobalt (TPFCor)Co, (10-pentafluorophenyl-5,15-dimesitylcorrole)cobalt (F 5PhMes 2Cor)Co, and (5,10,15-trismesitylcorrole)cobalt (Mes 3Cor)Co, all of which contain bulky substituents at the three meso positions of the corrole macrocycle. Cyclic voltammetry and rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry were used to examine the catalytic activity of the compounds when adsorbed on the surface of a graphite electrode in the presence of 1.0 M perchloric acid, and this data is compared to results for the homogeneous catalytic reduction of O 2 in benzonitrile containing 10 (-2) M HClO 4. The corroles were also investigated as to their redox properties in nonaqueous media. A reversible one-electron oxidation occurs at E 1/2 values between 0.42 and 0.89 V versus SCE depending upon the solvent and number of fluorine substituents on the compounds, and this is followed by a second reversible one-electron abstraction at E 1/2 = 0.86 to 1.18 V in CH 2Cl 2, THF, or PhCN. Two reductions of each corrole are also observed in the three solvents. A linear relationship is observed between E 1/2 for oxidation or reduction and the number of electron-withdrawing fluorine groups on the compounds, and the magnitude of the substituent effect is compared to what is observed in the case of tetraphenylporphyrins containing meso -substituted C 6F 5 substituents. The electrochemically generated forms of the corrole can exist with Co(I), Co(II), or Co(IV) central metal ions, and the site of the electron-transfer in each oxidation or reduction of the initial Co(III) complex was examined by UV-vis spectroelectrochemistry. ESR characterization was also used to characterize singly oxidized (F 5PhMes 2Cor)Co, which is unambiguously assigned as a Co(III) radical cation rather than the expected Co(IV) corrole with an unoxidized macrocyclic ring.

A new series of relatively flexible cofacial donor-acceptor dyads for singlet-singlet energy transfer with the corrole or etio-porphyrin free base and zinc porphyrin as the acceptor and donor, respectively, were synthesized and characterized (represented as (PMes2COx)ZnH3 (13), (PMes2CO)ZnH3 (14), and (PMes2CX)ZnH3 (15)) where (PMes2COx = [2-[5-(5,15-dimesitylcorrol-10-yl)-diphenylether-2'-yl]-13,17-diethyl-2,3,7,8,12,18-hexamethylporphyrin]), (PMes2CO = [5-[5-(5,15-dimesitylcorrol-10-yl)-dibenzofuran-4-yl]-13,17-diethyl-2,3,7,8,12,18-hexamethylporphyrin]), and (PMes2CX = [5-[5-(5,15-dimesitylcorrol-10-yl)-9,9-dimethylxanthen-4-yl)]-13,17-diethyl-2,3,7,8,12,18-hexamethylporphyrin]), respectively) along with the homobismacrocycles (DPOx)ZnH2 (17) and (DPOx)Zn2 (18) (where (DPOx = 2,2'-bis[5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl)]diphenylether) as comparison standards. The rate for energy transfer (kET) extracted by the measurements of fluorescence lifetimes are of the same order of magnitude as those recently reported for the rigidly held face-to-face dyads ((DPB)ZnH2 (1), (DPX)ZnH2 (2), (DPA)ZnH2 (3), (DPO)ZnH2 (4), and (DPS)ZnH2 (5) where (DPB = 1,8-bis[5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl)]biphenylene), (DPX = 4,5-bis[5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl)]-9,9-dimethylxanthene), (DPA = 1,8-bis[5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl)]anthracene), (DPO = 4,6-bis[5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl)]dibenzofuran), and (DPS = 4,6-bis[5-(2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethylporphyrinyl)]dibenzothiophene), respectively), but for the first time, it is shown that the presence of a bulky group located between the acceptor and the donor moiety influences the transfer rate. The presence of perpendicular mesityl groups on the acceptor macrocycle prevents the two macrorings from interacting strongly; therefore, kET is slower. On the other hand, by rendering the rigid spacer flexible (i.e., changing the dibenzofuran rigid spacer to the flexible diphenylether assembling fragment), kET increases due to stronger intermacrocycle interactions. This study is complemented by DFT computations (B3LYP/3-21G*) as a molecular modeling tool where subtle structural features explain the changes in kET. During the course of this study, X-ray structures of 17 and 18 were investigated and exhibit a linear stacking of the bismacrocycles where intermolecular porphyrin-porphyrin interactions are observed (dinter(Zn...Zn) = 4.66 and 4.57 A, for 17 and 18, respectively).

Combined electrochemical and UV-visible spectroelectrochemical methods were utilized to elucidate the prevailing mechanisms for electroreduction of previously synthesized porphyrin-corrole dyads of the form (PCY)H2Co and (PCY)MClCoCl where M = Fe(III) or Mn(III), PC = porphyrin-corrole, and Y is a bridging group, either biphenylenyl (B), 9,9-dimethylxanthenyl (X), anthracenyl (A), or dibenzofuranyl (O). These studies were carried out in pyridine, conditions under which the cobalt(IV) corrole in (PCY)MClCoCl is immediately reduced to its Co(III) form, thus enabling direct comparisons with the free-base porphyrin dyad, (PCY)H2Co(III) under the same solution conditions. The compounds are all reduced in multiple one-electron-transfer steps, the first of which involves the M(III)/M(II) process of the porphyrin in the case of (PCY)MClCoCl and the Co(III)/Co(II) process of the corrole in the case of (PCY)H2Co. Each metal-centered redox reaction may be accompanied by the gain or loss of pyridine axial ligands, with the exact stoichiometry of the exchange process depending upon the specific combination of metal ions in the dyad, their oxidation states, and the particular spacer in the complex. Before this study was started, it was expected that the porphyrin-corrole dyads with the largest spacers, namely, O and A, would readily accommodate the formation of cobalt(III) bis-pyridine adducts because of the larger size of the cavity while dyads with the smallest B spacer would seem to have insufficient room to add even a single pyridine within the cavity, as was structurally seen in the case of (PCB)H2Co(py). This is clearly not the case, as shown in the present study. A reversible Co(III)/Co(II) reaction is seen for (PCB)MnClCoCl at -0.62 V, which when combined with spectroscopic data, leads to the assignment of (PCB)Mn(III)(py)2Co(III)(py) as the species in pyridine. The reduction of (PCB)Mn(III)(py)2Co(III)(py) to (PCB)Mn(II)(py)Co(III)(py) is accompanied on the slower spectroelectrochemical time scale by the appearance of a 603 nm band in the UV-vis spectra and is consistent with the addition of a second pyridine ligand to the Co(III)(py) unit of the dyad as one ligand is lost from the electrogenerated manganese(II) porphyrin, thus maintaining one pyridine ligand within the cavity. A different change in the coordination number is observed in the case of (PCB)FeClCoCl. Here the initial Fe(III) complex can be assigned as (PCB)Fe(III)ClCo(III)(py), which has no pyridine molecule within the cavity and the singly reduced form is characterized as (PCB)Fe(II)(py)2Co(III)(py)2, which contains two pyridine ligands inside the cavity. A following one-electron reduction of the Fe(II)/Co(III) complex then gives [(PCB)Fe(II)(py)2Co(II)]-.

Three face-to-face linked porphyrin-corrole dyads were investigated as to their electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and chloride-binding properties in dichloromethane or benzonitrile. The same three compounds were also investigated as to their ability to catalyze the electroreduction of dioxygen in aqueous 1 M HClO4 or HCl when adsorbed on a graphite electrode. The characterized compounds are represented as (PCY)H2Co, where P = a porphyrin dianion; C = a corrole trianion; and Y = a biphenylenyl, 9,9-dimethylxanthenyl, or anthracenyl spacer, which links the two macrocycles in a face-to-face arrangement. An axial binding of one or two Cl- ligands to the cobalt center of the corrole is observed for singly and doubly oxidized (PCY)H2Co, with the exact stoichiometry of the reaction depending upon the spacer size and the concentration of Cl- added to solution. No Cl- binding occurs for the neutral or reduced forms of the dyad, which contrasts with what is seen for the monocorrole, (Me4Ph5Cor)Co, where a single Cl- ligand is added to the Co(III) corrole in PhCN. The Co(III) form of the corrole in (PCY)H2Co also appears to be the catalytically active species in the electroreduction of dioxygen, which occurs at potentials associated with the Co(IV)/Co(III) reaction, that is, 0.35 V in 1 M HClO4 as compared to 0.31-0.42 V for the same three dyads in PhCN and 0.1 M TBAP. The potential for the catalytic electroreduction of O2 in HCl shifts negatively by 60 to 70 mV as compared to E(1/2) values in 1 M HClO4, consistent with the binding of Cl- to the Co(IV) form of the corrole and its rapid dissociation after electroreduction to Co(III) at the electrode surface.

The synthesis of a novel family of heterobinuclear cofacial biphenylene (B), anthracene (A), 9,9-dimethylxanthene (X), or dibenzofuran (O) bridged porphyrin-corrole complexes, (PCY)MClCoCl, is reported, M being either an iron(III) or manganese(III) ion. Each complex was characterized by electrochemistry, mass spectrometry, UV-vis, IR, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Unlike previously examined biscobalt porphyrin-corrole dyads, the cobalt ion of the corrole moiety is present in a high-valence +4 oxidation state, as proven by electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and an X-ray diffraction study of (PCB)FeClCoCl, which shows the presence of a bound Cl- anion on the cobalt corrole. The synthesis and characterization of cofacial copper biscorroles and porphyrin-corroles linked by a biphenylenyl or anthracenyl spacer are described. The investigated compounds are represented as (BCA)Cu(2) and (BCB)Cu(2) in the case of the biscorrole (BC) derivatives and (PCA)Cu(2) and (PCB)Cu(2) in the case of porphyrin (P)-corrole (C) dyads, where A and B represent the anthracenyl and biphenylenyl bridges, respectively. A related monomeric corrole (Me(4)Ph(5)Cor)Cu and monomeric porphyrin (Me(2)Et(6)PhP)Cu that comprise the two halves of the porphyrin-corrole dyads were also studied. Electron spin resonance (ESR), (1)H NMR, and magnetic measurements data demonstrate that the copper corrole macrocycle, when linked to another copper corrole or copper(II) porphyrin, can be considered to be a Cu(III) complex in equilibrium with a Cu(II) radical species, copper(III) corrole being the main oxidation state of the corrole species at all temperatures. The cofacial orientation of (BCB)Cu(2), (BCA)Cu(2), and (PCB)Cu(2) was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The two cofacial biscorroles, (BCA)Cu(2) and (BCB)Cu(2), both show three electrooxidations under the same solution conditions. The reduction of (BCA)Cu(2) involves a reversible electron addition to each macrocycle at the same potential of E(1/2) = -0.20 V although (BCB)Cu(2) is reversibly reduced in two steps to give first [(BCB)Cu(2)](-) and then [(BCB)Cu(2)](2)(-), each of which was characterized by ESR spectroscopy as containing a Cu(II) center. These latter electrode reactions occur at E(1/2) = -0.36 and -0.51 V versus a saturated calomel reference electrode. The half-reduced and fully reduced (BCB)Cu(2) show similar Cu(II) ESR spectra, and no evidence of a triplet signal is observed. The two well-separated reductions of (BCB)Cu(2) to give [(BCB)Cu(2)](2)(-) can be attributed to a stronger pi-pi interaction between the two macrocycles of this dimer as compared to those of (BCA)Cu(2). The copper porphyrin-corrole dyads, (PCA)Cu(2) and (PCB)Cu(2), show five reversible oxidations and two reversible reductions, and these potentials are compared with corresponding values for electrochemical reactions of the porphyrin and corrole monomers under the same solution conditions.

Solvent effects on the electrochemistry and spectroscopic properties of alkyl- and aryl-substituted corroles in nonaqueous media are reported. The oxidation and reduction of six compounds containing zero to seven phenyl or substituted phenyl groups on the macrocycle were studied in four different nonaqueous solvents (CH(2)Cl(2), PhCN, THF, and pyridine) containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate. Dimers were formed upon oxidation of all corroles in CH(2)Cl(2), but this was not the case in the other three solvents, where either monomers or dimers were formed upon oxidation depending upon the solvent Gutmann donor number and the number or location of aryl substituents on the macrocycle. The half-wave potentials were analyzed as a function of the number of aryl substituents on the macrocycle as well as the concentration of added pyridine to PhCN solutions of the compound, and these data were combined with data from the spectroelectrochemistry experiments to determine the stoichiometry of the species actually in solution after the first oxidation or first reduction of each compound. The results of these experiments indicate that reduction of the bispyridine adduct (Cor)Co(III)(py)(2) proceeds via the monopyridine complex (Cor)Co(III)(py) to give in each case the unligated cobalt(II) corrole [(Cor)Co(II)](-). In contrast, pyridine remains coordinated after electrooxidation, and the final product was characterized as [(Cor)Co(III)(py)(2)](+).

The synthesis and characterization of three new cofacial biscorroles and three new linked Co(II) porphyrins and Co(III) corroles with the same face to face orientation are described. The biscorroles are represented as (BCS)Co(2), (BCO)Co(2), (BCX)Co(2) while the porphyrin-corrole dyads are represented as (PCA)Co(2), (PCB)Co(2), (PCO)Co(2) where BC represents the Co(III) cofacial biscorroles and PC represents the porphyrin-corrole complexes which are linked to each other by a dibenzothiophene (S), dibenzofuran (O), or 9,9-dimethylxanthene (X) bridge in the case of the corroles and an anthracene (A), biphenylene (B), or dibenzofuran (O) bridge in the case of the mixed macrocycle derivatives. The electrochemical and spectroscopic data on these new bismacrocycles are compared to those of previously reported biscorroles of the type (BCA)Co(2) and (BCB)Co(2). The CO and/or pyridine binding properties of each biscorrole and porphyrin-corrole in CH(2)Cl(2) are also presented. Only one CO ligand is bound axially to each corrole unit of the bismacrocycle but five- and six-coordinate pyridine complexes can be generated for the same compounds, with the exact stoichiometry depending upon the concentration of pyridine in solution. In all cases, the six-coordinate bispyridine corrole complex can be unambiguously identified by a strong diagnostic marker band located at 598-601 nm. The formation constants for pyridine binding to the biscorroles range from log K(1) = 3.14 to 5.08 while log K(2) ranges from 1.10 to 2.61 depending upon the specific spacer. Carbon monoxide binding constants range from log K = 3.6 to 4.0 in the case of the biscorroles and from log K = 3.4 to 4.1 in the case of the porphyrin-corrole dyads. These values also depend on the specific spacer in the complex and, like the pyridine binding constants, decrease in the order BCO > BCA > BCB for the biscorroles and PCO > PCA > PCB for the porphyrin-corrole complexes.

The synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and electrochemistry of (BCA)Co(2) and (BCB)Co(2) are described where BCA and BCB represent biscorroles linked by an anthracenyl (A) or a biphenylenyl (B) bridge. The pyridine and CO binding properties of (BCA)Co(2) and (BCB)Co(2) are also presented, and one of the compounds in its pyridine-ligated form, (BCA)Co(2)(py)(3), is structurally characterized. The data on the biscorroles are compared on one hand to the monocorrole having the same substitution pattern and on the other hand to bisporphyrins having two Co(II) ions and the same anthracenyl or biphenylenyl linkers in order to better understand the interaction which occurs between the two corrole macrocycles. A parallel study on five different Co(III) phenyl-substituted corroles showed that bis-pyridine and mono-CO adducts are readily formed from the complexes in CH(2)Cl(2). This present paper examines how the ligand binding properties and electrochemistry of these Co(III) corroles are modified by the anthracenyl or biphenylenyl bridge which links the two macrocycles in a face to face orientation. An X-ray crystal structure was obtained for the tris-pyridine adduct of the anthracenyl bridged derivative, (BCA)Co(2)(py)(3), and gives the following results: C(127)H(99)Co(2)N(11).2CHCl(3), M = 2135.90, triclinic, space group P&onemacr;, a = 13.2555(5) A, b = 18.6406(8) A, c = 22.2140(9) A, alpha = 94.186(9) degrees, beta = 102.273(9) degrees, gamma = 94.205(9) degrees, V = 5326.8(4) A(3), 9293 independent reflections collected, R(F) = 0.066.

The synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and electrochemistry of six different alkyl- and aryl-substituted Co(III) corroles are presented. The investigated compounds contain methyl, ethyl, phenyl, or substituted phenyl groups at the eight beta-positions of the corrole macrocycle and four derivatives also contain a phenyl group at the 10-meso position of the macrocycle. Each cobalt corrole undergoes four reversible oxidations in CH(2)Cl(2) containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate and exists as a dimer in its singly and doubly oxidized forms. The difference in potential between the first two oxidations is associated with the degree of interaction between the two corrole units of the dimer and ranges from an upper value of 0.62 V, in the case of (Me(6)Et(2)Cor)Co, to a lower value of about 0.17 V, in the case of four compounds which have a phenyl group located at the 10-meso position of the macrocycle. These Co(III) corroles strongly coordinate two pyridine molecules or one carbon monoxide molecule in CH(2)Cl(2) media, and ligand binding constants were evaluated using spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The structure of (Me(4)Ph(5)Cor)Co(py)(2) was also determined by X-ray diffraction. The preparation and characterization of a new series of mixed metal cofacial anthracene-bridged diporphyrins (DPA) containing a GaL fragment (L = OMe, OH) and another metallic center (M = GaL, Ru(CO)(OH), Co, and H(2) (i.e. free base)) are reported. The luminescence properties at 298 and 77 K, in degassed EtOH solution, are also reported, and are characterized by a weak pipi fluorescence (2 < tau(F) < 7 ns) arising from the low energy Q-bands (S(1)-->S(0)). In the mixed diporphyrin systems, a strong pipi fluorescence is detected from the free base, while the transition metalloporphyrins of Co(II) and Ru(II) do not emit. The homobimetallic di[Ga(OMe)] species exhibits an unprecedented double (pi)(pi) fluorescence arising from the two lowest energy absorption Q-bands. On the basis of a comparison with photophysical data on GaL monoporphyrins, the weak fluorescence and absence of phosphorescence for most cases indicate efficient intramolecular quenching. To define structural features, the X-ray structures of (DPA)[Ga(OMe)](2) (2), (DPA)[Ga-(OH)-Ru(CO)] (5a), and (DPA)[Ga(OMe)-Ru(MeOH)(CO)] (5b) have been obtained. The structures of 5a and 5b demonstrate an interesting aspect of the structural chemistry of these ligands related to the internal methoxide and methanolic ligands in 5b (resulting in a large interplanar separation and center-to-center distance) and the internal metal-bridging hydroxyl ligand in 5a (resulting in a small interplanar separation and center-to-center distance). These data support previously reported discussions on the ability of the DPA and the DPB analogue (diporphyrinylbiphenylenyl) ligands to open and close their "bite" around the binding pocket between the porphyrin macrocycles.

The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and electrochemistry of five new phosphorus corroles are reported. The investigated complexes contain alkyl, aryl, oxo, or hydrido axial ligands and are represented as (OEC)P(H)2, (OEC)P(CH3)2, (OEC)P(C6H5)2, (OEC)P=O, and [(OEC)P(CH3)]+ClO4-, where OEC is the trianion of octaethylcorrole. The products of electrooxidation and/or electroreduction were also characterized by UV-vis and ESR spectroscopy. Correlations are shown to exist between reversible half-wave potentials for the first oxidation and first reduction of each compound and the combined electronegativity of the central ion and the axial ligand(s). The electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap, defined as the difference between first reduction and first oxidation, was found to be independent of the electron-transfer site and similar in magnitude to the value generally observed for metalloporphyrins with planar macrocycles, i.e., 2.25 +/- 0.15 V.
