The first double-walled bimetal-organic framework [Cd4K4(TADA)4(H2O)12]·6DMF (1, TADA = 3,3'-((6-hydroxy-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(azanediyl)) dibenzoate) has been successfully constructed. In virtue of its high porosity and abundant basic sites, MOF 1 can be served as a high-efficiently size-selective heterogeneous catalyst for Knovenagel condensation reaction. Remarkably, 1 also exhibits excellent luminescent detectability for metronidazole (MDZ) with the highest quenching constant ( Ksv) of 1.16 × 105 M-1. The results demonstrate that 1 can be served as a unique bifunctional platform for antibiotics sensing and size-selective catalysis.

As a modulatable class of porous crystalline materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained intensive research attention in the domain of gas storage and separation. In this study, we report on the synthesis and gas adsorption properties of two robust MOFs with the general formula [Co3(μ3-OH)(cpt)3Co3(μ3-OH)(L)3(H2O)9](NO3)4(guests)n [L = 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (1) and 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (2); Hcpt = 4-(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole], which show the same pacs topology. Both MOFs are isostructural to each other and show MIL-88-type frameworks whose pore spaces are partitioned by different functionlized trinuclear 1,2,4-triazolate-based clusters. Two isomorphic 3-D complexes with the formulas [M3(TPTA) (OH)2(H2O)4]n (M = Ni for 1 and Co for 2; H4TPTA = [1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-2',3,3″,5'-tetracarboxylic acid) have been synthesized and magnetically characterized. Complexes 1 (Ni(II)) and 2 (Co(II)) have the same 1-D rod-shaped inorganic SBUs but exhibit significantly different magnetic properties. A custom-designed bifunctional ligand was used to connect an in situ formed Co3(OH) cluster affording a porous metal-organic framework, which represents the first case of ncb-type networks constructed from a single kind of ditopic ligand. Noticeably, the activated MOF shows high volumetric C2H2 uptake and excellent adsorption selectivity for C2H2/CO2 separation at room temperature with a low sorption heat.

A unique channel-type metal–organic framework (MOF) built up from mixed square-planar Co4(μ2-OH)4(μ4-OH) and cuboidal Co4(μ3-OH)4 clusters with an isonicotinic acid ligand has been successfully fabricated that demonstrates the highest specific surface area and high H2 uptake capacities among all of the cobalt(II) isonicotinic acid frameworks reported so far.

Two novel Co(II)-cluster-based coordination polymers--namely, [Co5(μ3-OH)2(1,4-ndc)4(bix)2]n (1) and {[Co8(μ3-OH)4(1,4-ndc)6(btp)(H2O)6]·H2O}n (2)--were prepared by hydrothermal reactions of Co(II) perchlorate with 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-H2ndc) and different N-donor coligands (bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene and btp = 4,4'-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)biphenyl). In 1, 10-connected [Co5(μ3-OH)2(COO)8] clusters are extended by the μ4-1,4-ndc(2-) and trans-bix ligands to construct a rare, self-penetrating ile framework that can interestingly be regarded as the cross-link of two interpenetrating 6-connected pcu networks. While for 2, [Co8(μ3-OH)4(COO)12] clusters serve as the 8-connected nodes, which are bridged by the μ4/μ5-1,4-ndc(2-) and trans-btp ligands to afford the highest-connected uninodal self-penetrating (4(20).6(8)) network based on octacobalt clusters. A synthetic and structural comparison of 1 and 2 demonstrates that the features of auxiliary N-donor ligands play a key role in governing the in situ formed clusters and the final 3-D coordination frameworks. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that complex 1 shows an antiferromagnetic interaction between the adjacent Co(II) ions, whereas 2 displays the dominant antiferromagnetic exchanges in 300-50 K and a ferrimagnetic-like behavior at lower temperatures.

A new pillared-layer coordination polymer, [Co(3)(pybz)(2)(pico)(2)](n) (1; pybz = 4-(pyridin-4-yl)benzoate, pico = 3-hydroxypicolinate), contains rare 2D [Co(3)(pico)(2)](n)(2n+) layers formed by linear cobalt(II) trimers through the unusual mu(4)-kappaN,O:kappaO'-mu(2):kappaO''-mu(2) bridging mode of pico ligands, which are further cross-pillared by exotridentate bridging pybz ligands to form a three-dimensional structure with an unusual uninodal 8-connected body-centered-cubic topology. The bulk magnetic behavior of 1 exhibits ferrimagnetic long-range ordering below 2.6 K, which mainly arises from the cooperative magnetic effect of the intra- and intertrimer arrangements in the 2D magnetic system based on the nature of the exchange modes of mu(2)-hydroxyl, mu(2)-carboxylate oxygen, and 1,1,3-mu(3)-carboxylate bridges.

Three porous lanthanide-organic frameworks, [Ln(4)(OH)(4)(3-SBA)(4)(H(2)O)(4)].nH(2)O [Ln = Eu(III) (1), n = 10; Gd(III) (2), n = 10; Tb(III) (3), n = 8; 3-SBA = 3-sulfobenzoate], have been prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method. They are isomorphous and crystallize in a tetragonal system with space group P 42(1)c. The structure can be considered to be built up by cubanelike [Ln(4)(OH)(4)](8+) secondary building units, which are further connected by 3-SBA to form a 3D coordination framework with 1D pores along the c direction for accommodation of novel T8(3) water tapes or zigzag water chains. Furthermore, in these compounds, the [Ln(4)(OH)(4)](8+) units and 3-SBA ligands serve as 12-connected and 3-connected nodes, respectively, resulting in a unique (3,12)-connected framework with the Schlafli symbol of (4(3))(4)(4(20).6(28).8(18)). The luminescent properties of the Eu(III) (1) and Tb(III) (3) complexes have been studied, showing characteristic emissions at room temperature. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that the Gd(III) complex 2 displays weak antiferromagnetic coupling through mu(3)-OH(-) pathways.

A series of nine mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been prepared by the combination of a bent dipyridyl linker 4-amino-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (bpt) and three benzenedicarboxylate isomers (pa = phthalate, ip = isophthalate, and tp = terephthalate), respectively, with different metal ions such as CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, and CdII. The framework structures of these neutral polymeric complexes have been determined by the X-ray single-crystal diffraction technique. Structural analysis reveals that the benzenedicarboxylate isomers display versatile coordination modes to manage the metal ions to form 1-D chain or ribbon arrays, which are further extended via the exo-bidentate bpt connectors to give rise to a variety of coordination networks, such as a simple (4,4) layer, 2-D double layer with decorated (4,4) topology, 2-D layer with decorated (3,6) topology, 2-D bilayer with 82.10 topology (2-fold interpenetration), 3-D polythreaded architecture (1-D + 2-D), and 2-fold interpenetrating porous lattice of (4,4) layers. The accessorial secondary interactions such as hydrogen bonding and/or aromatic stacking are also helpful for the extension and stabilization of the final supramolecular aggregates. This work evidently indicates that the isomeric effect of the anionic benzenedicarboxylate is significant in the construction of these network structures, which are also well regulated by the metal centers. The ZnII and CdII MOFs exhibit strong solid-state luminescence emissions at room temperature, which originate differently from intraligand transition or ligand-to-metal charge transfer. Thermal stability of these crystalline materials has been explored by thermogravimetric analysis of mass loss. The 3-D host frameworks of MOFs 8 and 9 show similar porous cavities, and their desorption/adsorption behaviors of guest solvents have also been investigated.

Four novel Zn(II) and Cd(II) metal-organic coordination polymers with a versatile building block 5-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol (Hpyt) have been prepared under different conditions. [Zn3(pyt)4(OH)2]n (1) and [Cd(pyt)(HCOO)]n (3) were obtained through a solvothermal method, whereas {[Zn(pyt)2(H2O)(2)].(DMF)2}n (2) and {[Cd(pyt)2].CHCl3}n (4) were isolated under general conditions. X-ray single-crystal diffraction indicates that the anionic ligand pyt adopts a thioamide isomer in 1, 2, and 4, but a thiolate form in 3. Four types of binding modes involving monodentate (eta-N(oxa)), bidentate (mu-N(py),N(oxa), or mu-N(py),S,S) and tridentate (mu-N(py),N(oxa),S) are observed. The discrepancy of the synthetic routes and metal-coordination preferences facilitates the production of the final crystalline materials with distinct network structures, including a 1D zigzag array of 1 with dangling arms, a common 2D (4,4) coordination layer of 2, a decorated 3D alpha-Po network of 3, and an unprecedented (3,6)-connected 3D framework of 4 with a (4(2).6)2(4(2).6(2).8(7).10(2)) topology. Notably, the hydrolysis of DMF solvates leads to the formation of formate ions, being a component in the structure of 3. Complexes 2 and 4 show 1D channels in which the solvates are accommodated, and even after the exclusion of these guests, the porous host frameworks are still retained. Thermal stability and gas adsorption properties have also been studied.

The formation, crystal structures, and properties of a series of three-dimensional (3-D) Cu(II) coordination polymers, [[Cu(L)2(H2O)2](PF6)2(H2O)(1.25)]n (1), [[CuL(N3)2](H2O)(1.5)]n (2), and [[CuL(H2O)(SO4)](H2O)2]n (3), with an angular bridging ligand 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L) are reported. Complex 1 crystallizes in the tetragonal I4(1)/a space group (a = b = 13.462(2) A, c = 46.47(1) A, Z = 8), complex 2 in the orthorhombic Pna2(1) space group (a = 6.379(2) A, b = 10.060(3) A, c = 27.232(9) A, Z = 4), and complex 3 in the orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group (a = 5.510(2) A, b = 10.576(4) A, c = 28.34(1) A, Z = 4). Different polymeric frameworks are obtained by only varying the counterions. These include the 2-fold interpenetrated diamondoid structure of 1, the acentric alpha-Po network of 2, and the chiral open framework of 3 with (6(3)).(6(9).8) topology. The interesting anion-exchange, porous, and magnetic properties of these coordination supramolecules have been investigated in detail.

The reaction of various CuII salts with 2,5-bis(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L) in CH3CN-H2O medium affords different complexes, the solid structures of which are controlled only by the choice of the counteranions. Reaction of Cu-(ClO4)2.6H2O or Cu(NO3)2.3H2O and L yields the novel bimetallic macrocyclic complex [Cu2L2(H2O)6](ClO4)4(H2O)4 (1) [monoclinic, space group P21/m, a = 8.745(5) A, b = 16.179(10) A, c = 14.930(8) A, beta = 93.253(10) degrees, Z = 2] or [CuL(NO3)2]2(CH3CN)2 (2) [triclinic, space group P1, a = 7.863(3) A, b = 8.679(3) A, c = 13.375(5) A, alpha = 74.121(5) degrees, beta = 78.407(6) degrees, gamma = 86.307(6) degrees, Z = 1]. However, with the replacement of CuII perchlorate or nitrate salts with CuSO4.5H2O or Cu(OAc)2.H2O in the above reaction, two different one-dimensional (1-D) coordination polymers [[Cu2L2(H2O)6(SO4)2](H2O)6]n (3) [triclinic, space group P1, a = 7.078(3) A, b = 11.565(4) A, c = 12.561(5) A, alpha = 109.511(6) degrees, beta = 105.265(6) degrees, gamma = 94.042(6) degrees, Z = 1] or [[Cu2L(mu-OAc)4]]n (4) [monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 20.007(7) A, b = 7.506(2) A, c = 16.062(5) A, beta = 108.912(5) degrees, Z = 4] were obtained. These results unequivocally indicate that the nature of the counteranions, which play different roles in each complex, is the key factor governing the structural topologies of them. The magnetic properties of these CuII complexes have been investigated by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements, and the magneto-structural correlation has been analyzed in detail.

The synthesis and crystal structure of the three-dimensional coordination polymer of an angular dipyridyl ligand 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L) and Cu(ClO4)2, exhibiting the first CuII diamondoid network with 2-fold interpenetration, {[Cu(L)2(H2O)2](ClO4)(OH)(H2O)2.5}n (1), together with the Cu(OAc)2 complex of L, [Cu(L)2(OAc)2(H2O)](H2O)2(CH3OH) (2), with an unexpected mononuclear structure, are reported. Crystal data for 1: tetragonal, space group I41/a, a = b = 13.477(3) A, c = 46.167(13) A, Z = 8. Crystal data for 2: triclinic, space group P1, a = 7.847(2) A, b = 13.189(4) A, c = 15.948(5) A, α = 75.225(7)°, β = 79.945(6)°, γ = 77.540(5)°, Z = 2. The magnetic properties and anion effect are also discussed.

The reactions of 3,6-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (DPTZ) with different Cu(II) salts generate two new ligands, 2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxodiazole (L(1)) and N,N'-bis(alpha-hydroxyl-2-pyridyl)ketazine (H(2)L(2)), from the metal-assisted hydrolysis of DPTZ, and form three new complexes: a mononuclear complex [Cu(L(1))(2)(H(2)O)(2)] .2ClO(4) (1), a linear coordination polymer [Cu(L(1))(NO(3))(2)](8) (2), and a cyclic tetranuclear complex [Cu(4)(L(2))(2)(Im)(2)(NO(3))(4)(H(2)O)(2)] (3) (Im = imidazole). Crystal data for 1: space group P2(1)/n with a = 10.339(3) A, b = 10.974(2) A, c = 13.618(4) A, beta = 103.24(1) degrees, and Z = 2. Crystal data for 2: space group C2/c with a = 13.9299(14) A, b = 9.2275(9) A, c = 12.1865(13) A, beta = 111.248(2) degrees, and Z = 4. Crystal data for 3: space group P2(1)/n with a = 9.3422(14) A, b = 15.987(2) A, c = 13.963(2) A, beta = 108.587(3) degrees, and Z = 2. L(1) acts as a bidentate chelating ligand in 1 and as a bis-bidentate chelating ligand in 2 with the shortest intramolecular Cu...Cu distance of 6.093 A. L(2) is a hexadentate ligand to bridge four Cu(II) ions, forming an interesting neutral cyclic tetranuclear complex 3 with Cu...Cu distances varying from 4.484 to 9.370 A. The mechanism of the metal assisted hydrolysis of DPTZ is discussed in detail. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that 2 shows weak ferromagnetic interaction (J = 2.85 cm(-1)) along the 1-D helical chain, and that 3 displays weak antiferromagnetic interaction (J = -1.19 cm(-1) for the N-N bridge) and ferromagnetic interaction (j = 0.11 cm(-1) for the O-C=N bridge) between the adjacent Cu(II) ions.

This work presents a mesoporous Dy(III) metal-organic framework with two types of void cages (diameters: 4.4 and 2.8 nm), which can efficiently adsorb a variety of chemical pollutants, including toxic metals, iodine, and formaldehyde.

A series of new diazamesocyclic ligands based on a diazamesocycle, 1,5-diazacyclooctane (DACO), functionalized by additional donor groups--1,5-bis(N-1-methylimidazol-2-ylmethyl)-1,5- diazacyclooctane (L1), 1-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane (HL2), 1,5-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane (H2L3), and 1-(N-1-methylimidazol-2-ylmethyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane (L4)--and their Cu(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the four Cu(II) complexes revealed that L1 forms a five-coordinate mononuclear complex, HL2 a N3- mu-bridged binuclear complex, H2L3 an oxygen mu-bridged trinuclear complex, and L4 a one-dimensional zigzag coordination polymeric complex with Cu(II). [CuL1ClO4](ClO4) (I): a = 12.194(2) A, b = 13.351(3) A, c = 14.473(3) A, beta = 107.10(3) degrees, Z = 4. [CuL2(N3)]2 (II): a = 8.1864(6) A, b = 18.141(2) A, c = 9.3307(7) A, beta = 103.662(6) degrees, Z = 2. [Cu3(L3)2Cl2] (III): a = 10.7296(13) A, b = 13.7707(17) A, c = 13.5523(17) A, beta = 106.350(3) degrees, Z = 2. ([CuL4Cl]2ClO4) infinity (IV): a = 7.279(1) A, b = 23.695(5) A, c = 19.308(4) A, beta = 100.28(3) degrees, Z = 8. All four complexes crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system with the P2(1)/c space group, and each Cu(II) center coordinated with DACO is pentacoordinated with a distorted square-pyramidal or trigonal-bipyrimidal coordination environment. In complex IV, the binuclear cation unit [CuL4Cl]2(2+) constitutes the fundamental building block of an infinite alternating zigzag chain structure, and the binuclear unit contains two types of geometries around the Cu(II) centers: the Cu(1) center is a distorted square-pyramidal environment, while the Cu(2) is a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal coordination environment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Cu(II) complex of a diazamesocyclic ligand with an infinite polymeric structure. The magnetic properties of complexes II, III, and IV have been investigated by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements in the solid state. The obtained parameters are 2J = 2.06 cm-1 (II), -345.56 cm-1 (III), and -2.60 cm-1 (IV), which differ greatly from ferromagnetic to weak and strong antiferromagnetic coupling. These results unequivocally indicate that the nature of the pendant arms is a key factor governing the structure and properties of the complexes; therefore, the coordination modes and properties of the metal complexes of a diazamesocycle can be controlled by altering the pendant donors on it. Magneto-structural correlation has been precisely analyzed, and the solution properties of these complexes have also been described.

Five new Mn(II) coordination polymers, namely [Mn(2)(tbip)(2)(bix)] (1), [Mn(3)(tbip)(3)(bix)(2)] (2), [Mn(3)(tbip)(2)(Htbip)(2)(bib)(2)]·4H(2)O (3), [Mn(4)(tbip)(4)(bbp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (4), and [Mn(4)(tbip)(4)(bip)]·2H(2)O (5), were prepared by hydrothermal reactions of Mn(II) acetate with H(2)tbip (5-tert-butyl isophthalic acid) in the presence of different di-imidazolyl coligands (bix =1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, bib =1,4-bis(imidazol) butane, bbp =1,3-bis(benzimidazol)propane, bip =1,3-bis(imidazol)propane). All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and powder X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray studies show that these coordination polymers contain homometallic clusters varying from dimeric, trimeric, and tetrameric motifs to polymeric chains depending upon the coligands used. Complex 1 has a 3D 6-connected polycatenane network with dinuclear [Mn(2)O(2)] secondary building units. Complex 2 possesses a 3D 8-connected structure with trinuclear [Mn(3)(COO)(6)] units. Complex 3 shows a 3D pcu net based on trinuclear [Mn(3)(COO)(6)] clusters as nodes. Complex 4 features a 3D 8-connected structure constructed from the distorted square-grid tetranuclear [Mn(4)(μ(2)-COO)(8)(μ(2)-H(2)O)] units. Complex 5 shows a 3D (4,5,6)-connected net containing 1D μ-O/μ-COO alternately bridged chains. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that complexes 1 and 3-5 show weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the adjacent Mn(II) ions, whereas 2 is a three-spin center homometallic ferromagnetic system.

By using different organic acids as additive agents, hydrothermal reactions of AgNO(3) with 3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (2-bpt) lead to formation of two conformational polymorphs of [Ag(2-bpt)](NO(3)) with bimetallocyclic and 1-D helical coordination patterns. Interconversion between the two supramolecular isomers can be achieved under proper conditions, which will pass through the same intermediate state.

Two Cu(II) coordination complexes {[Cu(ces)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(0.5)}(n) (1) and [Cu(15)(dhs)(6)(OH)(6)(H(2)O)(10)](H(2)O)(20) (2) have been synthesized from cis-epoxysuccinic acid (cis-H(2)ces) and Cu(II) perchlorate under different pH conditions (ces = cis-epoxysuccinate and dhs = 2,3-dihydroxysuccinate), and fully characterized by IR spectra, elemental analyses, as well as single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. Notably, when the reaction was performed at pH above about 7.4, a one-dimensional (1-D) helical chain complex 1 is formed, whereas a neutral isolated Cu(15) nanocluster 2 is generated when the pH value is decreased to the range of about 6.6-7.3, being concomitant with in situ S(N)2 ring-cleavage reaction of cis-H(2)ces to form (2S,3S)- and (2R,3R)-H(4)dhs. Further, extended supramolecular architectures are constructed via secondary interactions in both structures. The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 have also been studied in detail, showing that 1 is an antiferromagnetic helical chain of S = 1/2 spins and 2 possesses an S = 3/2 spin ground state.

Two unprecedented 2D coordination polymers with 4- and 6-connected topological nets, arising from the different linkages of two adjacent 4(4) layers, were prepared from Co(II), 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, and different isophthalate tectons.

A series of new metal-organic polymeric complexes, [[Co(bpt)(Htma)(H2O)3].2.25H2O]n (1), [Co(bpt)(Htma)(H2O)]n (2), [Ni(bpt)(Htma)(H2O)]n (3), [Zn(bpt)2(H2tma)2].6H2O (4), [[Cd(bpt)(Htma)(H2O)].(C2H5OH)(H2O)1.5]n (5), and [[Cd(bpt)(Htma)(H2O)2].5.5H2O]n (6), was prepared from solution reactions of 4-amino-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (bpt) and trimesic acid (H3tma) with different metal salts under diverse conditions. All these compounds were structurally determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, and the bulk new materials were further identified by X-ray powder diffraction. Complexes 1 and 6 show 1-D zigzag or linear Htma-bridged polymeric chains, with the terminal bpt ligands as pendants, which are extended to 2-D hydrogen-bonded arrays with 4.8(2) or (6,3) network topology. Coordination polymers 2 and 3, in which the 2-D corrugated metal-organic frameworks make the interdigitated 3-D packing, are isostructural. Complex 4 has a mononuclear structure, and its subunits are hydrogen-bonded to each other to give a 2-D grid-like net. For complex 5, the Cd(II) centers are linked by bpt/Htma ligands to form a 2-D (4,4) coordination layer, and these layers are interdigitated in pairs. Notably, secondary noncovalent forces, such as hydrogen bonds, play an important role in extending and stabilizing these structural topologies. Interestingly, distinct products are obtained for Co(II) (1 and 2) and Cd(II) (5 and 6) under ambient or hydrothermal conditions; however, for Ni(II) and Zn(II), single products, 3 and 4, are generated. The thermal stabilities of 1-6 were studied by thermogravimetric analysis of mass loss. The desorption/adsorption properties of the porous material 5 are also discussed. Solid-state luminescent spectra of the Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes, 4-6, indicate intense fluorescent emissions at ca. 380 nm.

A unique cyano-bridged copper(II)-copper(I) mixed-valence polymer, {[Cu(3)(CN)(4)(H(2)O)(3)](H(2)O)(2)}(n) (1), has been prepared and structurally determined by X-ray diffraction. The cyanide anions with (mu(2),eta(2)) and (mu(3),eta(2)) bridging modes connect the copper centers into a complicated zeolite-like 3-D network. Of further interest, coordinated and lattice water molecules in this structure form 1-D hydrogen-bonded water tapes consisting of linked cyclic pentamer clusters.

Six new metal-organic coordination networks based on linking unit 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (L(1)) or 2,5-bis(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L(3)) and inorganic Cu(II), Cd(II), and Co(II) salts have been prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Using L(1) to react with three different Cu(II) salts, Cu(OAc)(2).H(2)O, Cu(NO(3))(2).3H(2)O, and CuSO(4).5H(2)O, respectively, two different one-dimensional (1-D) coordination polymers, [[Cu(2)L(1)(mu-OAc)(4)](CHCl(3))(2)](n) (1) [triclinic, space group P1, a = 7.416(3) A, b = 8.207(3) A, c = 14.137(5) A, alpha = 100.333(7) degrees, beta = 105.013(6) degrees, gamma = 94.547(6) degrees, Z = 1] and [[CuL(1)(NO(3))(2)](CHCl(3))(0.5)](n) (2) [monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 28.070(8) A, b = 9.289(3) A, c = 15.235(4) A, beta = 113.537(5) degrees, Z = 8], and a chiral 3-D open framework, [[CuL(1)(H(2)O)(SO(4))](H(2)O)(2)](n) (3) [orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 5.509(2) A, b = 10.545(4) A, c = 29.399(11) A, Z = 4], were obtained. Reaction of L(1) and Cd(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O or Co(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O, in the presence of NH(4)SCN, yielded another 3-D open framework, [[CdL(1)(NCS)(2)](CH(3)OH)(1.5)](n) (4) [monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 28.408(10) A, b = 9.997(5) A, c = 7.358(4) A, beta = 99.013(8) degrees, Z = 4], or a 2-D network, [[Co(L(1)())(2)(NCS)(2)](H(2)O)(2.5)](n) (5) [orthorhombic, space group Pnna, a = 22.210(5) A, b = 12.899(3) A, c = 20.232(4) A, Z = 4]. When L(1) was replaced by L(3) to react with Co(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O and NH(4)SCN, another 2-D coordination polymer, [Co(L(3))(2)(NCS)(2)](n) (6) [monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 8.120(3) A, b = 9.829(4) A, c = 17.453(6) A, beta = 103.307(6) degrees, Z = 2], was constructed. These results indicate that the nature of the ligands, metal centers, or counteranions plays the critical role in construction of these novel coordination polymers. The interesting porous natures of two 3-D open frameworks 3 and 4 were investigated by TGA and XPRD techniques, and the magnetic properties of the Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes were studied by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements.

The synthesis and crystal structure of the three-dimensional coordination polymer of an angular dipyridyl ligand 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L) and Cu(ClO(4))(2), exhibiting the first Cu(II) diamondoid network with 2-fold interpenetration, ([Cu(L)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(OH)(H(2)O)(2.5))(n) (1), together with the Cu(OAc)(2) complex of L, [Cu(L)(2)(OAc)(2)(H(2)O)](H(2)O)(2)(CH(3)OH) (2), with an unexpected mononuclear structure, are reported. Crystal data for 1: tetragonal, space group I4(1)/a, a = b = 13.477(3) A, c = 46.167(13) A, Z = 8. Crystal data for 2: triclinic, space group P(-)1, a = 7.847(2) A, b = 13.189(4) A, c = 15.948(5) A, alpha = 75.225(7) degrees, beta = 79.945(6) degrees, gamma = 77.540(5) degrees, Z = 2. The magnetic properties and anion effect are also discussed.

The reactions of 1,4-bis(phenylthio)butane (L) with Ag(I) salts in varied conditions (varying the solvents, metal-to-ligand ratios, and counteranions) lead to the formation of four new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers with different network structures: [Ag(2)L(3)(ClO(4))(2)](infinity) 1, [Ag(2)L(3)(ClO(4))(2) x CH(3)OH](infinity) 2, [[AgL(2)](ClO(4))](infinity) 3, and [AgLNO(3)](infinity) 4. All the structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal data for 1: triclinic, P-1, a = 11.0253(9) A, b = 11.3455(9) A, c = 11.5231(9) A, alpha = 93.931(2) degrees, beta = 92.689(2) degrees, gamma = 112.9810(10) degrees, Z = 2. 2: triclinic, P-1, a = 11.9147(13) A, b = 16.1534(17) A, c = 16.2259(17) A, alpha = 74.977(2) degrees, beta = 69.030(2) degrees, gamma = 69.986(2) degrees, Z = 2. 3: triclinic, P-1, a = 12.1617(9) A, b = 12.5054(10) A, c = 13.1547(10) A, alpha = 64.3370(10) degrees, beta =85.938 (2) degrees, gamma = 69.3010(10) degrees, Z = 2. 4: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 5.4032(17) A, b = 16.974(6) A, c = 19.489(6) A, beta = 94.234(6) degrees, Z = 4. In all four complexes, each Ag(I) center has a tetracoordination geometry, and the 2D networks consist of fused large macrometallacyclic ring systems. The "hexagonal" 42-membered rings, Ag(6)L(6), observed in 1 and 2 are nearly identical, which could be considered as unique examples of self-sustaining noninterpenetrated frameworks formed with flexible ligands. The repeating rectangular 28-membered macrometallacycle, Ag(4)L(4), is the basis for the network of 3, in which the perchlorate anions occupy the voids to prevent the ring from collapsing. In 4, columns of the fused rectangular 22-membered rings, Ag(4)L(2)(NO(3))(2), are cross-linked through the L ligands to form a unique 2D network consisting of two types of 22-membered repeating units.
