A study was conducted to synthesize and characterize the structure and interconversion properties via thermal and solvent effects of two Co(NO3)2 crystal structures with trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene. The experiment featured a rare example of a transformation by thermal rearrangement at 150 degrees centigrade in a solid state of a mononuclear complex into a molecular ladder structure with a 44-membered ring.

The 1,1-bis(pyridyl-2-thio)-3,3,5,5-tetrachlorocyclotriphosphazene was synthesized by the reaction of N3P3Cl6 with 2-HSPy in boiling tetrahydrofuran and triethylamine. The pseudohexacoordinate cyclotriphosphazene is a geminal isomer that is formed by the nucleophilic substitution of pyridine-2-thioate with hexachlorocyclotriphophazene. The compound has a six-membered ring that is composed of N3P3 units.

Interesting structural differences in the magic angle of 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide (Py2S) and coligand effects were examined. (Co(Py2)2Cl2)n was found to be the first integral two-layer interwoven sheet without any counterion or solvate while (Co(Py2S)2(NCS)2)n produced a double-stranded linear infinite structure. Thermal studies of the complexes over the temperature range 25-430 degrees C indicated the important thermal behaviors associated with the structure.
