The restriction of sulfur content in fuels has become increasingly stringent as a result of the growing environmental concerns. Although several MOF-derived materials like POM@MOF composites have shown the ability to catalyze oxidative desulfurization (ODS), their catalytic activities inevitably obstructed by the encapsulated catalytic sites like POM due to the blockage of cavities. Therefore, MOFs with intrinsic and accessible catalytic sites are highly desirable for their applications in ultradeep ODS. Herein, four representative Zr-based MOFs (Zr-MOFs), namely, UiO-66, UiO-67, NU-1000, and MOF-808, were assessed for catalytic ODS. These MOFs were confirmed that they have peroxidase-like activity and can catalyze ODS with H2O2 as oxidant. Among them, MOF-808 showed the highest catalytic activity and it can fully desulfurize dibenzothiophene (DBT) in a model gasoline with a S concentration of 1000 ppm under 40 °C within 5 min. An extremely low apparent Arrhenius activation energy (22.0 KJ·mol-1) and an extraordinarily high TOF value (42.7 h-1) were obtained, ranking MOF-808 among the best catalysts for the catalytic DBT oxidation. Further studies confirmed that the excellent catalytic activity is mainly responsible for the high concentration of the accessible Zr-OH(H2O) catalytic sites decorated in MOF-808. The superoxide radicals (•O2-) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were identified and were proved to involve in the DBT oxidation. Besides, the effects of Bronsted and lewis acidity to the catalytic efficiency were also discussed. Based on the experimental results, a plausible mechanism concerning on Zr-OH(H2O) groups promoting the H2O2 decomposion in to both •O2- and •OH was first proposed. Moreover, MOF-808 can be facilely reused for at least eight runs without significant loss of its catalytic activity. By the integration of facile synthesis, high catalytic efficiency, and good stability, MOF-808 thus represents a new benchmark catalyst for catalytic oxidative desulfurization.

Natural enzyme mimetics with high catalytic activity at nearly neutral pH values are highly desired for their applications in biological systems. Herein for the first time a stable MOF, namely MOF-808, has been shown to possess high intrinsic peroxidase-like catalytic activity under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. As a novel peroxidase mimetic, MOF-808 can effectively catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine when H2O2 serves as oxidant, accompanied by a significant color variation in the solution. The catalytic activity and the color variation were greatly dependent on H2O2 concentration, and thus MOF-808 can be applied to the colorimetric sensing of H2O2. The H2O2 detection limit is 4.5 μM, and the linear range is 10 μM to 15 mM. The detection of hypochlorite (ClO-) content in tap water is extremely important because excess amounts of hypochlorite can convert into highly toxic species and inadequate amounts of hypochlorite cannot fully kill bacteria and viruses. Although several metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been successfully employed as fluorescent sensors for hypochlorite detection, all these sensors are based on single emission that responds to the dose of hypochlorite. Ratiometric sensors are highly desirable, which can improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and reliability via self-calibration. Herein, a nanoscale dual-emission multivariate 5-5-Eu/BPyDC@MOF-253-NH2 was synthesized by sequential mixed-ligand self-assembly and postsynthesis method. Among the two emission bands of 5-5-Eu/BPyDC@MOF-253-NH2, the strong blue emitting derived from ligands is sensitive to hypochlorite, while the red emitting derived from Eu(III) almost keeps invariable. Therefore, 5-5-Eu/BPyDC@MOF-253-NH2 was exploited as a fluorescent ratiometric nanosensor for "on-off" sensing of hypochlorite. Notably, the proposed sensing system showed an excellent performance including fast response (within 15 s), relative high specificity, wide linear range (0.1-30 μM), and low detection limit (0.094 μM). Besides, the suppressed blue emitting was recovered after the addition of ascorbic acid (AA) that consumes ClO- via the redox reaction. Therefore, 5-5-Eu/BPyDC@MOF-253-NH2 was further employed as a fluorescent ratiometric nanosensor for the "on-off-on" sensing of AA. This work represents the first MOF-based fluorescent "switch" for the ratiometric sensing of hypochlorite and the second for ratiometric sensing of AA.

A highly luminescent porous metal-organic framework Cd3(L)2.5(4-PTZ)(DMF)3, labeled as NBU-9, has been designedly synthesized based on Cd(NO3)2·4H2O and mixed ligands of 4-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (4-HPTZ) with N-coordinated sites and thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2L) with heteroatomic (S) ring and carboxylate groups in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 100 °C for 3 days. The interesting result is that this compound NBU-9 can be also obtained via the mixed raw materials of Cd(NO3)2·4H2O, 4-cyanopyridine, NaN3, and H2L under solvothermal condition at a higher temperature of 140 °C for 3 days, involving in situ ligand synthesis of 4-HPTZ. Its structure was indentified by single-crystal X-ray study, powder X-ray diffraction, element analysis, and TGA results. Structural analysis shows that the three-dimensional framework of NBU-9 contains cubic channels of 9.59 × 10.26 A2 covered by a large number of open S- and O-coordinated sites and can be simplified into a 8-connected uninodal eca net with high potential solvent accessible volumes of 34.1%. Its luminescent properties demonstrate that NBU-9 as a multifunctional sensory material realizes the selective detection for the phenylmethanol molecule on the basis of fluorescence quenching mechanism and effectively sensitizing the visible emitting of the Tb3+ cation based on luminescence enhancement.

Highly efficient decontamination of heavily toxic Cr2O72– from water remains a serious task for public health and ecosystem protection. An easily regenerative and reused sorbent with suitable porosity may address this task. Herein, a series of water-stable and ecofriendly metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with large surface areas were assessed for their ability to adsorb and separate Cr2O72– from aqueous solutions. Among these tested MOFs, NU-1000 shows an extraordinary capability to efficiently capture (within 3 min) Cr2O72– with a sorption capacity of up to 76.8 mg/g, which is the largest one for the neutral MOF-based Cr2O72– sorbents. NU-1000 also shows remarkable selectivity for Cr2O72– capture and can effectively reduce the Cr(VI) concentration from 24 ppm to 60 ppb, which is below the acceptable limit for the drinking water standard (100 ppb by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Highly efficient decontamination of heavily toxic Cr

A network-structured SnO(2)/ZnO heterojunction nanocatalyst with high photocatalytic activity was successfully synthesized through a simple two-step solvothermal method. The as-synthesized samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, N(2) physical adsorption, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results show that the SnO(2)/ZnO sample with a molar ratio of Sn/Zn = 1 is a mesoporous composite material composed of SnO(2) and ZnO. The photocatalytic activity of SnO(2)/ZnO heterojunction nanocatalysts for the degradation of methyl orange is much higher than those of solvothermally synthesized SnO(2) and ZnO samples, which can be attributed to the SnO(2)-ZnO heterojunction, the pore structure, and higher Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the sample: (1) The SnO(2)-ZnO heterojunction improves the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs due to the potential energy differences between SnO(2) and ZnO, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity. (2) The SnO(2)/ZnO sample might possess more surface reaction sites and adsorb and transport more dye molecules due to the higher BET surface area and many pore channels, also leading to higher photocatalytic activity.

A high yield of the dimer-type heterostructure of Ag/ZnO nanocrystals with different Ag contents is successfully prepared through a simple solvothermal method in the absence of surfactants. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and IR spectroscopy. The results show that all samples are composed of metallic Ag and ZnO; Ag nanoparticles locate on the surface of ZnO nanorods; the binding energy of Ag 3d(5/2) for the Ag/ZnO sample with a Ag content of 5.0 atom % shifts remarkably to the lower binding energy compared with the corresponding value of pure metallic Ag because of the interaction between Ag and ZnO nanocrystals; the concentration of oxygen vacancy for the as-synthesized samples varies with the increasing Ag content, and the Ag/ZnO sample with a Ag content of 5.0 atom % has the largest density of oxygen vacancy. In addition, the relationship between their structure and photocatalytic property is investigated in detail. It is found that the photocatalytic property is closely related to its structure, such as heterostructure, oxygen defect, and crystallinity. The presence of metallic Ag nanoparticles and oxygen vacancy on the surface of ZnO nanorods promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and thus enhances the photocatalytic activity.

Using the tricyano precursor (Bu(4)N)[(Tp)Cr(CN)(3)] (Bu(4)N(+) = tetrabutylammonium cation; Tp = tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate), a pentanuclear heterometallic cluster [(Tp)(2)Cr(2)(CN)(6)Cu(3)(Me(3)tacn)(3)][(Tp)Cr(CN)(3)](ClO(4))(3)·5H(2)O (1, Me(3)tacn = N,N',N'-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), three tetranuclear heterometallic clusters [(Tp)(2)Cr(2)(CN)(6)Cu(2)(L(OEt))(2)]·2.5CH(3)CN (2, L(OEt) = [(Cp)Co(P(O)(OEt)(2))(3)], Cp = cyclopentadiene), [(Tp)(2)Cr(2)(CN)(6)Mn(2)(L(OEt))(2)]·4H(2)O (3), and [(Tp)(2)Cr(2)(CN)(6)Mn(2)(phen)(4)](ClO(4))(2) (4, phen = phenanthroline), and a one-dimensional (1D) chain polymer [(Tp)(2)Cr(2)(CN)(6)Mn(bpy)](n) (5, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Complex 1 shows a trigonal bipyramidal geometry in which [(Tp)Cr(CN)(3)](-) units occupy the apical positions and are linked through cyanide to [Cu(Me(3)tacn)](2+) units situated in the equatorial plane. Complexes 2-4 show similar square structures, where Cr(III) and M(II) (M = Cu(II) or Mn(II)) ions are alternatively located on the rectangle corners. Complex 5 consists of a 4,2-ribbon-like bimetallic chain. Ferromagnetic interactions between Cr(III) and Cu(II) ions bridged by cyanides are observed in complexes 1 and 2. Antiferromagnetic interactions are presented between Cr(III) and Mn(II) ions bridged by cyanides in complexes 3-5. Complex 5 shows metamagnetic behavior with a critical field of about 22.5 kOe at 1.8 K.

Low-dimensional ZnO nanocrystals with controlled size, aspect ratio, and oxygen defects (e.g., type and concentration) are successfully prepared through simple solvothermal and thermal treatment methods. The structure of the as-synthesized samples is characterized by XRD, N2 physical adsorption, TEM, and IR and XPS spectra. The results show that the aspect ratio and size of the as-synthesized ZnO nanocrystals increase with increasing [OH-]/[Zn2+]; the morphology evolves from nanorod to nanoparticle with an increase in the annealing temperature; the BET surface areas of the corresponding samples decrease during these processes, respectively; and different oxygen defects, which are likely to be oxygen vacancy (Vo**) and interstitial oxygen (Oi''), are formed in our experiments accordingly. With evolution of the structure, IR absorption bands and visible photoluminescence emission peaks of the synthesized ZnO nanocrystals shift and split, which is ascribed to the change of oxygen defects. In addition, it is found that the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized ZnO nanocrystals is mainly dependent on the type and concentration of oxygen defects. The relationship of structure-property and the possible photocatalytic mechanism are discussed in detail.
