Research has been conducted on the sodium, potassium and cesium salts. Results indicate that cesium and potassium locate between salicylaldimine ligands and sodium resides within the salicylaldimine oxygen planes.

The side arm effects on cyclen-alkali metal cation binding are investigated by preparing various armed cyclens in which ester, amide, nitrile and pyridine moieties are appended as cation-ligating side arms to a 12-membered ring. Ester, amide and pyridine-armed 12-membered cyclens are found to easily accomodate a Na+ ion in a 3D manner and highly discriminate the cation from Li+ and K+ ions. It was also observed that these cyclens are more efficient and selective in binding Na+ ion than common Na+ ion-selective ligands.

The redox properties of Na+, Ca2+ and La3+ cryptates of tris(bipyridyl) (1-Na+, 1-Ca2+, 1-La3+) and Na+ complexes of five ligands were determined by cyclic voltammetry in DMF solution. The cyclic voltammograms of 1-Na+, 1-Ca2+ and 1-La3+ were similar containing three reducible ligands resulting to three, evenly spaced and quasi-reversible redox couples. There was only one reducible ligand for 2-Na+ and for 6-Na+ which resulted to an anticipated one redox wave.

The replacement of the hydrogens by deuteriums in the napthalene anion radical results in a change in the sodium hyperfine splitting constant (a(sub Na)) in tetrahydrofuran solvent. Changes in equilibrium constants control the relative concentrations of Na+, C10H8.- and Na+//C10H8.-. The coupling constants for the anion radicals of napthalene and perdeuteriated napthalene was larger than that of the normal anion radical. This indicated that the fundamental interaction between the anion and metal cation was altered due to the presence of the eight extra neutrons in the anion.

Research has been conducted on the (NP) KTl crystallization in the KTl type structure. Results indicate that isolated distorted Tl (sub)6 (super)6- octahedra have been built up by four-connected Tl atoms.

The synthesis of a series of tellurocarboxylates using the reactions of acyl chlorides with sodium and potassium tellurides is reported. These compounds, which are yellow to red in color and exist either as solids or oils, are shown to be both oxygen-sensitive and heat-sensitive. The structures of the sodium and potassium tellurocarboxylates were determined by X-ray crystallography and compared with those of similar isologues.
