The reaction between silylamido complexes of Cr(II), Fe(II), and Co(II) and IMes·2HF salt in the presence of IMes (IMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene) led to isolation of Cr(IMes) 2 F 2 ( 2-Cr ), Fe(IMes) 2 F 2 ( 2-Fe ), and Co(IMes) 2 F 2 ( 2-Co ). X-ray structural studies revealed that 2-Cr adopts square planar geometry, while 2-Fe and 2-Co have distorted tetrahedral geometry. Magnetic susceptibility studies of 2-Cr , 2-Fe , and 2-Co were consistent with high-spin complexes, S = 2 for 2-Cr / 2-Fe and S = 3/2 for 2-Co . We demonstrated that fluoride can be successfully exchanged for cyanide and azide using trimethylsilyl cyanide and trimethylsilyl azide ( 3-Fe and 4-Fe ). DFT studies suggest that the preference of 2-Cr to adopt square planar geometry over tetrahedral is due to its d 4 metal center, where four electrons fill the lower-lying d-orbitals.

Controlling the formation of the desired product in the appropriate crystalline form is the fundamental breakthrough of crystal engineering. On that basis, the preferential formation between polymorphic forms, which are referred to as different assemblies achieved by changing the disposition or arrangement of the forming units within the crystalline structure, is one of the most challenging topics still to be understood. Herein, we have observed the formation of two concomitant polymorphs with general formula {[Hg(Pip) 2 (4,4'-bipy)]·DMF} n ( P1A, P1B ; Pip = piperonylic acid; 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine). Besides, [Hg(Pip) 2 (4,4'-bipy)] n ( 2 ) has been achieved during the attempts to isolate these polymorphs. The selective synthesis of P1A and P1B has been successfully achieved by changing the synthetic conditions. The formation of each polymorphic form has been ensured by unit cell measurements and decomposition temperature. The elucidation of their crystal structure revealed P1A and P1B as polymorphs, which originates from the Hg(II) cores and intermolecular associations, especially pinpointed by Hg···π and π···π interactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that P1B , which shows Hg(II) geometries that are further from ideality, is more stable than P1A by 13 kJ·mol -1 per [Hg(Pip) 2 (4,4'-bipy)]·DMF formula unit, and this larger stability of P1B arises mainly from metal···π and π···π interactions between chains. As a result, these structural modifications lead to significant variations of their solid-state photoluminescence.

Alkane metathesis transforms small alkanes into their higher and lower homologues. The reaction is catalyzed by either supported d 0 metal hydrides (M = Ta, W) or d 0 alkyl alkylidene complexes (M = Ta, Mo, W, Re). For the silica-supported tantalum hydrides, several reaction mechanisms have been proposed. We performed DFT-D3 calculations to analyze the viability of the proposed pathways and compare them with alkane hydrogenolysis, which is a competitive process observed at the early stages of the reaction. The results show that the reaction mechanisms for alkane metathesis and for alkane hydrogenolysis present similar energetics, and this is consistent with the fact that the process taking place depends on the concentrations of the initial reactants. Overall, a modified version of the so-called one-site mechanism that involves alkyl alkylidene intermediates appears to be more likely and consistent with experiments. According to this proposal, tantalum hydrides are precursors of the alkyl alkylidene active species. During precursor activation, H 2 is released and this allows alkane hydrogenolysis to occur. In contrast, the catalytic cycle implies only the reaction with alkane molecules in excess and does not form H 2 . Thus, the activity for alkane hydrogenolysis decreases. The catalytic cycle proposed here implies three stages: (i) β-H elimination from the alkyl ligand, liberating ethene, (ii) alkene cross-metathesis, allowing olefin substituent exchange, and (iii) formation of the final products and alkyl alkylidene regeneration by olefin insertion and three successive 1,2-CH insertions to the alkylidene followed by α abstraction. These results relate the reactivity of silica-supported hydrides with that of the alkyl alkylidene complexes, the other common catalyst for alkane metathesis.

Hydrazine reacts with silica-supported tantalum-hydrides [(≡SiO)2TaHx] (x = 1, 3), 1, under mild conditions (100 °C). The IR in situ monitoring of the reaction with N2H4 or (15)N2H4, and the solid-state MAS NMR spectra of the fully (15)N labeled compounds (CP (15)N, (1)H-(15)N HETCOR, (1)H-(1)H double-quantum, and (1)H-(1)H triple-quantum spectra) were used to identify stable intermediates and products. DFT calculations were used for determining the reaction pathway and calculating the (15)N and (1)H NMR chemical shifts. Combining the experimental and computational studies led to the following results. At room temperature, only hydrazine adducts, 1-N2H4, are formed. Upon heating at 100 °C, the hydrazine adducts are converted to several species among which [(≡SiO)2Ta(═NH)(NH2)], 2, [(≡SiO)2TaH(NH2)2], 3, and [(≡SiO)2TaH2(NH-NH2)], 4, were identified. The final product 2 is also formed in the reaction of N2 with the same silica-supported tantalum-hydride complexes, and the species identified as 3 and 4 had been previously suggested by DFT studies as intermediates on the reaction pathway for N-N cleavage in N2. The present computational studies (cluster models with M06 functional complemented by selected calculations with periodic calculations) show that 2 is formed via 3 and 4, with either N2 or N2H4. This strengthens the previous proposal of the existence of 3 and 4 as intermediates in the reaction of N2 with the tantalum-hydrides. However, the reaction of N2 does not imply the formation of N2H4 or its hydrazido monoanionic or dianionic ligand as an intermediate. For this reason, this study informs both on the similarities and differences of the reaction pathways involving N2 and N2H4 with tantalum-hydrides.

DFT(B3PW91) calculations have been carried out to propose a pathway for the N(2) cleavage by H(2) in the presence of silica-supported tantalum hydride complexes [(≡SiO)(2)TaH(x)] that forms [(≡SiO)(2)Ta(NH)(NH(2))] (Science 2007, 317, 1056). The calculations, performed on the cluster models {μ-O[(HO)(2)SiO](2)}TaH(1) and {μ-O[(HO)(2)SiO](2)}TaH(3), labelled as (≡SiO)(2)TaH(x) (x = 1, 3), show that the direct hydride transfers to coordinated N-based ligands in (≡SiO)(2)TaH(η(2)-N(2)) and (≡SiO)(2)TaH(η(2)-HNNH) have high energy barrier barriers. These high energy barriers are due in part to a lack of energetically accessible empty orbitals in the negatively charged N-based ligands. It is shown that a succession of proton transfers and reduction steps (hydride transfer or 2 electron reduction by way of dihydride reductive coupling) to the nitrogen-based ligands leads to more energetically accessible pathways. These proton transfers, which occur by way of heterolytic activation of H(2), increase the electrophilicity of the resulting ligand (diazenido, N(2)H(-), and hydrazido, NHNH(2)(-), respectively) that can thus accept a hydride with a moderate energy barrier. In the case of (≡SiO)(2)TaH(η(2)-HNNH), the H(2) molecule that is adding across the Ta-N bond is released after the hydride transfer step by heterolytic elimination from (≡SiO)(2)TaH(NH(2))(2), suggesting that dihydrogen has a key role in assisting the final steps of the reaction without itself being consumed in the process. This partly accounts for the experimental observation that the addition of H(2) is needed to convert an intermediate, identified as a diazenido complex [(≡SiO)(2)TaH(η(2)-HNNH)] from its ν(N-H) stretching frequency of 3400 cm(-1), to the final product. Throughout the proposed mechanism, the tantalum remains in its preferred high oxidation state and avoids redox-type reactions, which are more energetically demanding.

Three new 3,5-dimethylpyrazolic hybrid ligands N1-substituted by polyether chains and phenyl groups have been synthesized: 1,2-bis[4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2-oxabutyl]benzene (L1), 1,3-bis[4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2-oxabutyl]benzene (L2), and 1,4-bis[4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2-oxabutyl]benzene (L3). The reaction of these ligands with [PdCl(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)] gives two kinds of complexes, monomer or dimer, depending on the solvent. Monomeric chelated complexes [PdCl(2)(L)] [L = L1 (1), L2 (2), L3 (3)] are obtained when the solvent of the reaction is acetonitrile, whereas when the reaction takes place in tetrahydrofuran binuclear compounds [PdCl(2)(L)](2) [L = L1 (4), L2 (5), L3 (6)] are formed. The solid-state structures for 1 and 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. All of the palladium(II) complexes 1-6 were isolated and fully characterized. Diffusion NMR studies have been performed to characterize monomeric and dimeric species in solution. Dimeric compounds present complex (1)H NMR spectra, especially 4. Theoretical calculations on this molecule suggest that it is due to the coexistence of different conformers that do not interconvert to each other at room temperature. Finally, it has been observed that dimers are converted into the corresponding monomers in an acetonitrile reflux, thus indicating that the latter are thermodynamically more stable than dimers.

The synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic behavior of a new 2D copper(II) compound with formula {[Cu2(mu-O2CMe)(mu-MedapO)(mu1,1-N3)2]n (CH3OH)n} 1, in which MedapOH is N-methyl-1,3-diamino-2-propanol is reported herein. 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P1, with unit cell parameters a = 6.688(5) A, b = 10.591(6) A, c = 12.100(7) A, alpha = 113.01(3) degrees, beta = 105.08(4) degrees, gamma = 93.93(3) degrees, Z = 2. The structure of 1 consists of neutral alternate 1D chains formed by the sequence of [Cu(1)-(mu1,1-N3)2-Cu(1)-(MedapO/acetate)-Cu(2)-(mu1,1-N3)2-Cu2)]. Each dinuclear [Cu(1)-Cu(2)] unit interacts with similar dinuclear units of neighbor chains in basis to large Cu-N(azido) distances to give a 2D arrangement. The magnetic behavior of 1 has been checked giving a net ferromagnetic coupling. The fit of the chiM versus T data as dinuclear compound affords a J value of 53.0 cm(-1) as a consequence of the orbital countercomplementarity phenomenon. The exchange pathways have been justified by density functional calculations.

The synthesis of a family of new Ru complexes containing meridional or facial tridentate ligands with the general formula [Ru(II)(T)(D)(X)](n+) [T = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine or tripyrazolylmethane; D = 4,4'-dibenzyl-4,4',5,5'-tetrahydro-2,2'-bioxazole (S,S-box-C) or 2-[((1'S)-1'-(hydroxymethyl)-2'-phenyl)ethylcarboxamide]-(4S)-4-benzyl-4,5-dihydrooxazole (S,S-box-O); X = Cl, H(2)O, MeCN or pyridine] has been described. All complexes have been spectroscopically characterized in solution through (1)H NMR and UV-vis techniques. Furthermore, all of the chloro complexes presented here have also been characterized in the solid state through monocrystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The oxazolinic S,S-box-C ligands undergo a Ru-assisted hydrolysis reaction generating the corresponding amidate anionic oxazolinic ligands S,S-box-O, which are also strongly attached to the metal center and produce a strong sigma-donation effect over the Ru metal center. The redox properties of all complexes have also been studied by means of cyclic voltammetry, strongly reflecting the nature of the ligands; both effects, geometrical (facial vs meridional) and electronic (neutral vs anionic), can be unveiled and rationalized. Finally, the reactivity of the Ru-OH(2) complexes has been tested with regard to the epoxidation of trans-stilbene, and it has been shown that, in this particular case, the reactivity is practically not dependent on the redox potentials of the catalyst but, in sharp contrast, it is strongly dependent on the geometry of the tridentate ligands.

The homoleptic low-spin complex [Fe(L)3]2+ where L is the bisbidentate ligand 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione, coordinates Na+ ions via exo-oriented dione groups defining a three-dimensional cationic network {[Fe(L)3]4Na3}11+}n with Pt3O4 topology. The large volume generated by the network is filled with 11 perchlorate ions, 7 "NaClO4" ionic pairs, and 9 H2O molecules. Singular [Na+]4 units, in which the Na+ ions are practically uncoordinated, are formed.

rac-[Co(ambi)3]Cl3.3H2O corresponds to a tris-chelate complex bearing 2-(aminomethyl)benzimidazole (ambi) ligands bound to the Co(III) ion in a facial-type fashion. The high metal q/r ratio and electronic delocalization between coordination heterocyclic functionalities can provide powerful tools to minimize DNA condensation, which arises from the neutralization of the negatively charged sugar phosphate backbone in the presence of multivalent [Co(ambi)3]3+.

We have investigated the isomeric distribution and rearrangement of complexes of the type [CoXLn]2+,3+ (where X = Cl-, OH-, H2O, and Ln represents a pentadentate 13-, 14-, and 15-membered tetra-aza or diaza-dithia (N4 or N2S2) macrocycle bearing a pendant primary amine). The preparative procedures for chloro complexes produced almost exclusively kinetically preferred cis isomers (where the pendant primary amine is cis to the chloro ligand) that can be separated by careful cation-exchange chromatography. For L13 and L14 the so-called cis-V isomer is isolated as the kinetic product, and for L15 the cis-VI form (an N-based diastereomer) is the preferred, while for the L14(S) complex both cis-V and trans-I forms are obtained. All these complexes rearrange to form stable trans isomers in which the pendent primary amine is trans to the monodentate aqua or hydroxo ligand, depending on pH and the workup procedure. In total 11 different complexes have been studied. From these, two different trans isomers of [CoClL14(S)]2+ have been characterized crystallographically for the first time in addition to a new structure of cis-V-[CoClL14(S)]2+; all were isolated as their chloride perchlorate salts. Two additional isomers have been identified and characterized by NMR as reaction intermediates. The remaining seven forms correspond to the complexes already known, produced in preparative procedures. The kinetic, thermal, and baric activation parameters for all the isomerization reactions have been determined and involve large activation enthalpies and positive volumes of activation. Activation entropies indicate a very important degree of hydrogen bonding in the reactivity of the complexes, confirmed by density functional theory studies on the stability of the different isomeric forms. The isomerization processes are not simple and even some unstable intermediates have been detected and characterized as part of the above-mentioned 11 forms of the complexes. A common reaction mechanism for the isomerization reactions has been proposed for all the complexes derived from the observed kinetic and solution behavior.

Six new copper(II) complexes of formula [Cu(mu-cbdca)(H2O)]n (1) (cbdca = cyclobutanedicarboxylate), [Cu2(mu-cbdca)2(mu-bipy)2]n (2) (bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), [Cu(mu-cbdca)(mu-bpe)]n (3) (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane), [Cu(mu-cbdca)(bpy)]2 (4) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), [Cu(terpy)(ClO4)]2(mu-cbdca).H2O (5) (terpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine), and [Cu(cbdca)(phen) (H2O)].2H2O (6) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were obtained and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 is a two-dimensional network with a carboxylate bridging ligand in syn-anti (equatorial-equatorial) coordination mode. Complexes 2 and 3 are formed by chains through syn-anti (equatorial-apical) carboxylate bridges, linked to one another by the corresponding amine giving two-dimensional nets. Complexes 4 and 5 are dinuclear, with the copper ions linked by two oxo (from two different carboxylate) bridging ligands in 4 and with only one carboxylate showing the unusual bis-unidentate mode in complex 5. Complex 6 is mononuclear, with the carboxylate linked to copper(II) in a chelated form. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions build an extended two-dimensional network. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1-5 in the temperature range 2-300 K show the occurrence of weak ferromagnetic coupling for 1 and 4 (J = 4.76 and 4.44 cm(-1), respectively) and very weak antiferromagnetic coupling for 2, 3, and 5 (J = -0.94, -0.67, and -1.61 cm(-1), respectively). Structural features and magnetic values are compared with those reported for the similar copper(II) malonate and phenylmalonate complexes.

The reaction of Ln(NO3)3.aq with K3[Cr(CN)6] and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) in a water/ethanol solution led to two families of complexes: 4 one-dimensional (1D) complexes of the formula trans-[Cr(CN)4(mu-CN)2Ln(H2O)3(bpy)2]n.4nH2O.3.5nbpy (Ln3+ = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) and 10 1D complexes of the formula trans-[Cr(CN)4(mu-CN)2Ln(H2O)4(bpy)]n.3.5nH2O.1.5nbpy (Ln3+ = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu). The structures for the fourteen complexes [LaCr]n (1), [CeCr]n (2), [PrCr]n (3), [NdCr]n (4), [NdCr]n (4'), [SmCr]n (5), [EuCr]n (6), [TbCr]n (7), [DyCr]n (8), [HoCr]n (9), [ErCr]n (10), [TmCr]n (11), [YbCr]n (12), and [LuCr]n (13) have been solved. Complexes 1-4 crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbam and are isomorphous; complexes 4'-13 crystallize in the triclinic space group PI and are isomorphous. The X-ray structural characterization of complexes 1-4 shows the presence of a discrete decameric water cluster built around a cyclic hexameric core stabilized by the solid-state structure, which represents another new mode of association of water molecules. The Ln3+-Cr3+ magnetic interaction is negligible in 6 and 12, antiferromagnetic in 2, 4', 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, and unresolved for 3. The complex 5 is a ferrimagnet because its magnetic studies suggest the onset of a very weak ferromagnetic three-dimensional ordering.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for a series of Cu(I) complexes bearing N-hexadentate macrocyclic dinucleating ligands and for their corresponding peroxo species (1c-8c) generated by their interaction with molecular O2. For complexes 1c-7c, it has been found that the side-on peroxodicopper(II) is the favored structure with regard to the bis(mu-oxo)dicopper(III). For those complexes, the singlet state has also been shown to be more stable than the triplet state. In the case of 8c, the most favored structure is the trans-1,2-peroxodicopper(II) because of the para substitution and the steric encumbrance produced by the methylation of the N atoms. Cu(II) complexes 4e, 5e, and 8e have been obtained by O2 oxidation of their corresponding Cu(I) complexes and structurally and magnetically characterized. X-ray single-crystal structures for those complexes have been solved, and they show three completely different types of Cu(II)2 structures: (a) For 4e, the Cu(II) centers are bridged by a phenolate group and an external hydroxide ligand. The phenolate group is generated from the evolution of 4c via intramolecular arene hydroxylation. (b) For 5e, the two Cu(II) centers are bridged by two hydroxide ligands. (c) For the 8e case, the Cu(II) centers are ligated to terminally bound hydroxide ligands, rare because of its tendency to bridge. The evolution of complexes 1c-8c toward their oxidized species has also been rationalized by DFT calculations based mainly on their structure and electrophilicity. The structural diversity of the oxidized species is also responsible for a variety of magnetic behavior: (a) strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling with J = -482.0 cm(-1) (g = 2.30; rho = 0.032; R = 5.6 x 10(-3)) for 4e; (b) AF coupling with J = -286.3 cm(-1) (g = 2.07; rho = 0.064; R = 2.6 x 10(-3)) for 5e; (c) an uncoupled Cu(II)2 complex for 8e.

The syntheses, structural characterization, and magnetic behavior of the three new polynuclear copper(II) complexes with formulas [Cu(4)(eta(2):mu-CH(3)COO)(2)(mu-OH)(2)(mu-OH(2))(mu-bdmap)(2)](ClO(4))(2).H(2)O (1), [Cu(8)(NCO)(2)(eta(1):mu-NCO)(4)(mu-OH)(2)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(mu-OH(2))(3)(mu-bdmap)(4)](ClO(4))(2)x2H(2)O (2), and [Cu(9)(eta(1):mu-NCO)(8)(mu(3)-OH)(4)(OH(2))(2)(mu-bdmap)(4)](ClO(4))(2).4H(2)O (3), in which bdmapH is 1,3-bis(dimethylamino)-2-propanol, are reported. Tetranuclear complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P, with unit cell parameters a = 12.160(1) A, b = 13.051(1) A, c = 13.235(1) A, alpha = 110.745(1) degrees , beta = 109.683(1) degrees , gamma = 97.014(1), and Z = 2. Octanuclear complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c, with unit cell parameters a = 26.609(1) A, b = 14.496(1) A, c = 16.652(1) A, beta = 97.814(1) degrees , and Z = 4, and nonanuclear complex 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c, with unit cell parameters a = 24.104(1) A, b = 13.542(1) A, c = 24.355(1) A, beta = 109.98(1) degrees , and Z = 4. The magnetic behavior of the three complexes has been checked showing strong antiferromagnetic coupling in all the cases.

The host-guest interaction between four hexaaza macrocyclic ligands (3,6,9,17,20,23-hexaazatricyclo[23.3.1.1]triaconta-1(29),11,13,15 (30),25(27)-hexaene (Bd), 3,6,9,16,19,22-hexaazatricyclo[22.2.2.2]triaconta-1(27),11(30),12,14(29),24(28),25-hexaene (P2), 3,7,11,19,23,27-hexaazatricyclo[27.3.1.1]tetratriaconta-1(33),13, 15,17(34),29,31-hexaene (Bn), 3,7,11,18,22,26-hexaazatricyclo[26.2.2.2]tetratriaconta-1(31),13(34),14,16(33),28(32),29-hexaene (P3)) and two dicarboxylic acids (oxalic acid, H2Ox; oxydiacetic acid, H2Od) have been investigated using potentiometric equilibrium methods. Ternary complexes are formed in aqueous solution as a result of hydrogen bond formation and Coulombic interactions between the host and the guest. In the [(H6P2)(Ox)]4+ complex those bonding interactions reach a maximum yielding a log KR6 of 6.08. This species has been further characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analysis showing that the oxalate guest molecule is situated inside the macrocyclic cavity of the P2 host. X-ray diffraction analysis has also been carried out for the complex [(H6Bn)(Od)2](Br)2.6H2O, where now the oxydiacetate is bonded to the host but outside the macrocyclic cavity. Competitive distribution diagrams and total species distribution diagrams are used to graphically illustrate the most salient features of these systems, which are the following: (a) The Bd and P2 ligands bind Ox significantly much more stronger than Od. This is clearly manifested for the P2:Ox:Od competitive system, where a selectivity of 92.5% in favor of the P2-Ox complexation against P2-Od is obtained at p[H] = 2.8. (b) No isomeric effect is found when comparing binding capacities of oxalate with two isomeric ligands such as P2 and Bd since their affinity to bind the substrate is relatively similar. (c) Bn and P3 ligands have a similar behavior as described in (a) for P2 and Bd except that due to the increase of cavity size the differentiation becomes smaller. (d) Less basic ligands containing two methylenic units Bd (log betaH6 = 40.42) and P2 (40.42) bind stronger to the substrates than those containing three methylenic units Bn (50.32) and P3 (50.64) even though their relative predominance depends on p[H].

Tridentate/tetradentate Schiff base ligands L(1) and L(2), derived from the condensation of o-vanillin or pyridine-2-aldehyde with N,N-dimethylethylenediammine, react with nickel acetate or perchlorate salt and azide, cyanate, or thiocyanate to give rise to a series of dinuclear complexes of formulas [Ni(L(1))(micro(1,1)-N(3))Ni(L(1))(N(3))(OH(2))].H(2)O (1), [[Ni(L(1))(micro(1,1)-NCS)Ni(L(1))(NCS)(OH(2))][Ni(L(1))(micro-CH(3)COO)Ni(L(1))( NCS) (OH(2))]] (2) [[2A][2B]], [Ni(L(1))(micro(1,1)-NCO)Ni(L(1))(NCO)(OH(2))].H(2)O (3), and [Ni(L(2)-OMe)(micro(1,1)-N(3))(N(3))](2) (4), where L(1) = Me(2)N(CH(2))(2)NCHC(6)H(3)(O(-))(OCH(3)) and L(2) = Me(2)N(CH(2))(2)NCHC(6)H(3)N. We have characterized these complexes by analytical, spectroscopic, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The coordination geometry around all of the Ni(II) centers is a distorted octahedron with bridging azide, thiocyanate/acetate, or cyanate in a micro(1,1) mode and micro(2)-phenolate oxygen ion for 1-3, respectively, or with a double-bridging azide for 4. The magnetic properties of the complexes were studied by magnetic susceptibility (chi(M)) versus temperature measurements. The chi(M) nus T plot reveals that compounds 1 and 4 are strongly ferromagnetically coupled, 3 shows a weak ferromagnetic behavior, and 2 is very weakly antiferromagnetically coupled.

Compounds [Mn(dca)2bipym] (1), [Cu2(dca)4bipym] (2), and [Mn2(dca)4bipym] (3) have been synthesized and structural (2, 3) and magnetically characterized. Compound 1 is isomorphous with [Mn(dca)2bipy]. Compound 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/c space group, Z = 4, with a = 7.5609(9), b = 11.477(42), and c = 11.792(2) A and beta = 106.565(6) degrees. Compound 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, with a = 7.396(3) A, b = 11.498(7) A, and c = 12.349(9) A and beta = 106.61(5) degrees. While compound 1 is one-dimensional, with the manganese(II) ions bridged by double mu1,5-dicyanamide ligands, the structural arrangement in compounds 2 and 3 is three-dimensional based on ladder-like moieties. These units, whose steps are bipym groups, extend through mu1,5-dca bridges and are connected to another four on the plane perpendicular to the extension of the ladders to form the 3D arrangement. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show antiferromagnetic couplings in all cases, increasing for 1, 3, and 2, respectively.

Three new supramolecular entities of Cu(II) were synthesized and characterized: [(Cu(H(2)O)(tmen))(2)(mu-Cu(H(2)O)(opba))](2)[(ClO(4))(2)](2).2H(2)O (1), [(Cu(H(2)O)(tmen))(2) (mu-Cu(H(2)O) (Me(2)pba))](2)[(ClO(4))(2)](2) (2), and [(Cu(H(2)O)(tmen))(Cu(tmen))(mu-Cu(OHpba))](n)() ((ClO(4))(2))(n)().nH(2)O (3), where opba = o-phenylenbis(oxamato), Me(2)pba = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenbis(oxamato), OHpba = 2-hydroxy-1,3-propylenbis(oxamato), and tmen = N,N,N'N'-tetramethylethylenediamine. The crystal structures of 1, 2, and 3 were solved. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c with a = 20.572(4) A, b = 17.279(6) A, c = 22.023(19) A, beta = 103.13(4) degrees, and Z = 8. Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 16.7555(7) A, b = 13.5173(5) A, c = 17.1240(7) A, beta = 104.9840(10) degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pca2(1) with a = 21.2859(4) A, b = 12.8286(10) A, c = 12.6456(2) A, and Z = 4. The three complexes are very similar in structure: a trinuclear Cu(II) complex with the two terminal Cu(II) ions blocked by N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, but with a different environment in the Cu(II) central ion. In the case of complex 1, two of these trinuclear entities are packed with a short distance between the central Cu(II) ions of two separate entities forming a hexanuclear-type compound. In the case of 2, two of these trinuclear entities are linked by a hydrogen bond between a water molecule of one terminal Cu(II) and one oxygen atom of the oxamato ligand of the neighboring entity, also forming a hexanuclear complex. In the case of complex 3, the intermolecular linkages give a one-dimensional system where the OH groups of the OHpba entities are linked to the terminal Cu(II) of the neighboring entities. The magnetic properties of the three complexes were studied by susceptibility measurements vs temperature. For complex 1, an intramolecular J value of -312.1 cm(-)(1) and a contact dipolar interaction of -0.44K were found. For complex 2 and 3 the fit was made by the irreducible tensor operator formalism (ITO). The values obtained were as follows: J(1) = -333.9 cm(-)(1) and J(2) = 0.67 cm(-)(1) for 2 and J(1) = -335.9 cm(-)(1) and J(2) = 3.5 cm(-)(1) for 3.

Two new one-dimensional nickel(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized: [Ni(N,N-dimethylethylenediamine)(N3)2] (1) and [Ni(2-aminoethylpyridine)(N3)2] (2). The crystal structures of 1 and 2 were solved. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 10.569(2) A, b = 7.331(4) A, c = 12.9072(8) A, beta = 111.324(10) degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c with a = 12.299(5) A, b = 14.307(2) A, c = 12.604(3), beta = 106.72(2) degrees, and Z = 4. The two complexes are similar and may be described as one-dimensional systems with double-azido-bridged ligands in end-to-end and end-on coordination alternatively. The end-on moiety is almost identical for 1 and 2, but the end-to-end moiety is different in each structure: for 1 this part is almost planar but for 2 is nonplanar. In both cases the Ni atoms are situated in similar distorted octahedral environments. The magnetic properties of the two compounds were studied by susceptibility measurements vs temperature. The chi M vs T plots for 1 and 2 show a global antiferromagnetic behavior with a maximum near room temperature for 1 and at very low temperature for 2. J values for 1 and 2 were deduced from the spin Hamiltonian -sigma(J1SiSi+1 + J2Si+1Si+2). The computational method was based on the numerical solution for finite systems of increasing size. J values for 1 were J1 = -187 cm-1 and J2 = +77 cm-1 and for 2 J1 = -28 cm-1 and J2 = +73 cm-1. The positive values correspond to end-on azido ligands and the negative values to end-to-end azido ligands. Since the geometries of the [Ni(N3)]2 moieties involving the end-on azido ligands are almost the same in the two structures, the ferromagnetic coupling is nearly identical in the two compounds, while the significantly different antiferromagnetic couplings reflect the near planarity of the end-to-end Ni2(N3)2 fragment in 1 and its twisted geometry in 2.

The geometries, vibrational frequencies, and metal-ligand bond dissociation energies of 18 different structures of the Cu(NO(2))(2) complex have been studied. Mg(NO(2))(2) and Cu(NO(3))(2) have also been studied for comparison. The most stable structure of Cu(NO(2))(2) and Cu(NO(3))(2) corresponds to a D(2)(h)() one with a coplanar eta(2)-O,O coordination for the two NO(2) ligands. For Mg(NO(2))(2) the most stable structure is a D(2)(d)() one. The bonding in the D(2)(h)() and D(2)(d)() structures of Cu(NO(2))(2) is analyzed. For the MNO(2) systems the binding energy is very similar with both metals, while for the M(NO(2))(2) complexes the difference when changing the metal is very important. This behavior is related to the first and second ionization potentials of Cu and Mg. The computed vibrational frequencies are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

The first example of spin crossover iron(II) complexes based on dihydrobis(1-pyrazolyl)borate are presented here. The complexes {Fe[H(2)B(Pz)(2)](2)(phen)} (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), 1, and {Fe[H(2)B(Pz)(2)](2)(bipy)} (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine), 2, have been synthesized and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Crystals 1 and 2 are monoclinic, space group C2/c, Z = 4 with a = 17.448(4) Å, b = 16.101(4) Å, c = 10.611(2) Å, and beta = 112.47(2) degrees for 1 and a = 16.307(2) Å, b = 15.075(4) Å, c = 11.024(4) Å, and beta = 114.95(5) degrees for 2 at 293 K. The crystal structure of 2 was also determined at 139 K in order to detect the structural changes associated with the S = 0 <--> S = 2 spin conversion. 2 retains the same space group upon spin conversion with a = 16.086(6) Å, b = 14.855(6) Å, c = 10.812(2) Å, and beta = 114.18(3) degrees. The structures of 1 and 2 are made up of mononuclear neutral species where the positive charge of iron(II) is neutralized through the coordination of two chelate bidentate dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate anions, and phen or bipy neutral ligands are used to fill the iron(II) coordination sphere. The molecular structures for both compounds are very similar, with Fe-N bond lengths in the 2.212-2.158 Å range for the high-spin phase. The structural modifications associated with the spin change in 2 mainly consist of a large reorganization of the metal environment: the Fe-N decreases by 0.15 Å (mean value) when the temperature is lowered from 290 to 139 K and a more regular shape of the [FeN(6)] octahedron is achieved through a slight modification of the trigonal deformation angle from 5.3 degrees to 3.2 degrees along with remarkable variations of the N-Fe-N angles. The thermodynamic model of Slichter and Drickamer was applied to account for the magnetic data. The intermolecular interaction parameter and the enthapy and entropy changes associated with the spin transition were estimated as Gamma = 3.3 kJ mol(-)(1), DeltaH = 13.4 kJ mol(-)(1), and DeltaS = 81.9 J mol(-)(1) K(-)(1) for 1 and Gamma = 1.7 kJ mol(-)(1), DeltaH = 13.4 kJ mol(-)(1), and DeltaS = 83.9 J mol(-)(1) K(-)(1) for 2, respectively.

The trinuclear complex (&mgr;(3)-CO(3))[Ni(3)(Medpt)(3)(NCS)(4)] was obtained by reaction of basic solutions of nickel(II), Medpt (bis(3aminopropyl)methylamine) and thiocyanate ligand with atmospheric CO(2) or by simple reaction with carbonate anion. (&mgr;(3)-CO(3))[Ni(3)(Medpt)(3)(NCS)(4)] crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P&onemacr;, with a = 12.107(5) Å, b = 12.535(7) Å, c = 16.169(9) Å, alpha = 102.69(5) degrees, beta = 92.91(5) degrees, gamma = 118.01(4) degrees, Z = 2, and R = 0.043. The three nickel atoms are asymmetrically bridged by one pentadentate carbonato ligand, which shows a novel coordination mode. The (&mgr;(3)-CO(3))[Ni(3)(Medpt)(3)(NCS)(4)] compound shows a very strong antiferromagnetic coupling. Fit as irregular triangular arrangement gave J(1) = -88.4, J(2) = -57.7, and J(3) = -9.6 cm(-)(1), which is the strongest AF coupling observed to date for Ni(3) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the carbonato bridge is discussed.

Two new nickel(II) end-to-end azido-bridged compounds, cis-catena-[NiL(2)(&mgr;-N(3))](n)()(ClO(4))(n)().nH(2)O (1) and [Ni(2)L(4)(&mgr;-N(3))(2)](PF(6))(2) (2), were synthesized and characterized; L is 2-(aminoethyl)pyridine. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 were solved. Complex 1: monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/a, a = 8.637(2) Å, b = 18.9995(7) Å, c = 12.3093(7) Å, beta = 105.92(2) degrees, Z = 4. Complex 2: triclinic system, space group P&onemacr;, a = 9.139(7) Å, b = 10.124(3) Å, c = 12.024(2) Å, alpha = 70.407(14) degrees, beta = 84.19(2) degrees, gamma = 67.67(4) degrees, Z = 1. In the two complexes the nickel atom is situated in a similarly distorted octahedral environment. The two complexes are different; 1 is a one-dimensional helicoidal complex with the two L ligands and the two end-to-end azido bridges in a cis arrangement while complex 2 is a dinuclear system with two end-to-end azido bridges, indicating the extreme importance of the counteranion present (ClO(4)(-) for 1 and PF(6)(-) for 2). The magnetic properties of the two compounds were studied by susceptibility measurements vs temperature. The chi(M) vs T plot for 1 shows the shape for a weakly antiferromagnetically coupled nickel(II) one-dimensional complex without a maximum until 4 K. In contrast, for complex 2 the shape of the chi(M) vs T curve shows a maximum near 40 K, indicating medium antiferromagnetic coupling. From the spin Hamiltonian -J(ij)()S(i)()S(j)(), J values for 1 and 2 were less than -1 and -29.1 cm(-)(1), respectively. The magnetic behavior for 1 and 2 may be explained in terms of the overlap between magnetic orbitals, taking into account the torsion of the Ni(II) atoms and azido-bridging ligands in the two structures.
