This paper deals with the subject of delivering searchable broadcast television to the personal computer desktop. The paper begins by explaining traditional manual media monitoring methods. Then, by closely examining the demand, requirements, and possible implementations for an automated monitoring solution, readers are given an understanding of the functions, tasks, issues and advantages involved in automated desktop television. This discussion focuses specifically on the client/server architecture, using automated media monitoring at Canada's Department of National Defence as a case study. The paper also presents automated media monitoring from the broadcaster's perspective-as a new revenue opportunity that allows broadcasters to distinguish themselves from fierce competition by implementing cutting-edge, searchable video technology to provide a new service. A question and answer section responds to issues organizations may encounter when implementing automated media monitoring. Finally, predictions for the future of media monitoring and Televitesse's particular access TV solution are given.
