In recent years, several authors have warned that the number of trained experts in parasite taxonomy and systematics is declining rapidly, and that the whole field is at risk. However, to date there has been no quantitative analysis to support these claims. Here, we provide the first such assessment, focusing on helminths parasitic in fish as an example, and using a representative dataset comprising over 2000 helminth species described in the past two decades. Based on standard indices of inequality, we demonstrate that a small group of highly prolific taxonomists are associated with the vast majority of new species descriptions, indicating that the research output in parasite discovery is concentrated in the hands of a small number of individuals. This situation has not improved over time. Furthermore, there has been no turnover over time, i.e., no replacement of the most prolific taxonomists: the individual researchers ranking among the most prolific describers of new parasite helminth species in the past decade were generally also the most prolific in the decade before that. Finally, based on the year in which these most prolific taxonomists published their first species description, we estimate that a large proportion of them are in the latter stages of their career. Inequalities in research output are the norm across scientific disciplines. However, persistent inequality in the number of species description per author, coupled with the same individuals ranking as most prolific over time and a majority of them in late career, all combine to support earlier claims that parasite taxonomy may well face a crisis in the form of an impending loss of taxonomic expertise.

Prevalence of parasites in wild animals may follow ecogeographic patterns, under the influence of climatic factors and macroecological features. One of the largest scale biological patterns on Earth is the latitudinal diversity gradient; however, latitudinal gradients may also exist regarding the frequency of interspecific interactions such as the prevalence of parasitism in host populations. Dragonflies and damselflies (order Odonata) are hosts of a wide range of ecto- and endoparasites, interactions that can be affected by environmental factors that shape their occurrence and distribution, such as climatic variation, ultraviolet radiation and vegetation structure. Here, we retrieved data from the literature on parasites of Odonata, represented by 90 populations infected by ectoparasites (water mites) and 117 populations infected by endoparasites (intestinal gregarines). To test whether there is a latitudinal and bioclimatic gradient in the prevalence of water mites and gregarines parasitizing Odonata, we applied Bayesian phylogenetic comparative models. We found that prevalence of ectoparasites was partially associated with latitude, showing the opposite pattern from our expectations – prevalence was reduced at lower latitudes. Prevalence of endoparasites was not affected by latitude. While prevalence of water mites was also positively associated with vegetation biomass and climatic stability, we found no evidence of the effect of bioclimatic variables on the prevalence of gregarines. Our study suggests that infection by ectoparasites of dragonflies and damselflies is driven by latitudinal and bioclimatic variables. We add evidence of the role of global-scale biological patterns in shaping biodiversity, suggesting that parasitic organisms may prove reliable sources of information about climate change and its impact on ecological interactions.

Parasites are ubiquitous components of biological systems that have evolved in multiple independent lineages during the history of life, resulting in a diversity of taxa greater than that of their free-living counterparts. Extant host-parasite associations are the result of tight reciprocal adaptations that allow parasites to exploit specific biological features of their hosts to ensure their transmission, survival, and maintenance of viable populations. As a result, parasites may affect host physiology, morphology, reproduction or behaviour, and they are increasingly recognized as having significant impacts on host individuals, populations, communities and even ecosystems. Although this is usually acknowledged by parasite ecologists, fish ecologists often ignore parasitism in their studies, often acting as though their systems are free of parasites. However, the effects of parasites on their hosts can alter variables routinely used in fish ecology, ranging from the level of individual fish (e.g. condition factors) to populations (e.g. estimates of mortality and reproductive success) or communities (e.g. measures of interspecific competition or the structure and functioning of food webs). By affecting fish physiology, parasites can also interfere with measurements of trophic levels by means of stable isotope composition, or have antagonistic or synergistic effects with host parameters normally used as indicators of different sources of pollution. Changes in host behaviour induced by parasites can also modify host distribution patterns, habitat selection, diet composition, sexual behaviour, etc., with implications for the ecology of fish and of their predators and prey. In this review, we summarise and illustrate the likely biases and erroneous conclusions that one may expect from studies of fish ecology that ignore parasites, from the individual to the community level. Given the impact of parasites across all levels of biological organisation, we show that their omission from the design and analyses of ecological studies poses real risks of flawed interpretations for those patterns and processes that ecologists seek to uncover.

Seasonal infection dynamics characterise many host-parasite interactions, as abiotic conditions drive fundamental biological processes in both hosts and parasites. The extent to which seasonal cycles in parasite abundance are universal, and whether the same underlying mechanisms are responsible for seasonality across different host-parasite associations, have received little attention to date. Here, global patterns of seasonal infection dynamics are tested using a meta-analysis of 693 seasonal contrasts in the local abundance of metazoan parasites in aquatic vertebrates, representing 343 parasite species and 148 host species. These include both contrasts between winter and summer in temperate systems, and between wet and dry seasons in tropical systems. Overall, the analysis found no evidence that seasonal infection dynamics are universal, nor that they are controlled by the same factors. More specifically, the results indicate no overall effect of the magnitude of local seasonal differences in abiotic conditions (temperature or precipitation), type of host (amphibian or fish), habitat (freshwater, coastal marine or deep-sea), host body length, or mode of transmission (skin contact or trophic) on the extent of seasonal differences in parasite infections. Instead, the results revealed many clear taxon-specific or habitat-specific patterns of seasonal infection dynamics, with some parasite or host taxa generally showing distinct peaks in infections in summer or dry seasons, and others showing no seasonal changes. The present findings serve to identify empirically which host-parasite associations are most likely to respond to changing climatic conditions, and thus provide useful information for fisheries and aquaculture.

Community composition, including the relative density of each host species, plays a vital role in the transmission of parasites or disease in freshwater ecosystems. Whereas some host species can effectively transmit parasites, others can act as dead ends (non-viable transmission routes), accumulating large numbers of parasites throughout their life, thus becoming important sinks for parasite populations. Although population sinks have been identified in certain host-parasite systems, robust field estimates of the proportions of parasites that are lost to these hosts are lacking. Parasites harbour rich microbial communities that may play a role in host-parasite interactions, from influencing the parasite’s infectivity to modulating its virulence. Experimental manipulation of a parasite’s microbes would be essential, however, in order to establish their causal role. Here, we tested whether indirect exposure of a trematode parasite within its snail intermediate host to a variety of antibiotics could alter its bacterial community. Based on sequencing the prokaryotic 16S ssrRNA gene, we characterised and compared the bacterial community of the trematode Philophthalmus attenuatus before, shortly after, and weeks after exposure to different antibiotics (penicillin, colistin, gentamicin) with distinct activity spectra. Our findings revealed that indirectly treating the parasites by exposing their snail host to antibiotics resulted in changes to their bacterial communities, measured as their diversity, taxonomic composition, and/or the relative abundance of certain taxa. However, alterations to the parasite’s bacterial community were not always as predicted from the activity spectrum of the antibiotic used. Furthermore, the bacterial communities of the parasites followed significantly divergent trajectories in the days post-exposure to antibiotics, but later converged toward a new state, i.e. a new bacterial community structure different from that pre-exposure. Our results confirm that a trematode’s microbial community can be experimentally altered by antibiotic exposure while within its snail host, with the dynamic nature of the bacterial assemblage driving it to a new state over time after the perturbation. This research opens new possibilities for future experimental investigations of the functional roles of microbes in host-parasite interactions.

In the five decades since the first publication of the International Journal for Parasitology, ecological parasitology has grown from modest beginnings to become a modern discipline with a strong theoretical foundation, a diverse toolkit, and a multidisciplinary approach. In this review, I highlight 12 advances in the field that have spurred its growth over the past 50 years. Where relevant, I identify pivotal contributions that have altered the course of research, as well as the influence of developments in other fields such as mainstream ecology and molecular biology. The 12 key advances discussed are in areas including parasite population dynamics and community assembly, the regulation of host population abundance and food web structure, parasites as agents of natural selection, the impacts of biodiversity and anthropogenic changes on host-parasite interactions, the biogeography of parasite diversity, and the evolutionary genetics of parasites. I conclude by identifying some challenges and opportunities lying ahead, which need to be met for the future growth of ecological research on host-parasite interactions.

The increased rate of outbreaks of infectious diseases in ecosystems is a dramatic consequence of global change, particularly when outbreaks affect important resources such as freshwater fish. However, the links between disease-inducing epizootics and widespread human impacts, including nutrient pollution and high water conductivity, in freshwater organisms are largely unexplored. We used data from extensive surveys in northeastern Spain (99,700 km2, 15 river catchments, n = 530 sites) to explore the environmental factors that singly, or in combination, are likely to influence the occurrence of the invasive parasite, Lernaea cyprinacea, after accounting for host fish characteristics. Smaller fish, lower altitudes, higher water conductivity and nutrient pollution were associated with higher probabilities of infection in 19 endemic and widely distributed fish species. We found no evidence that interactive effects among riverine stressors related to water and physical habitat quality better explained the probability of occurrence of L. cyprinacea in fish than did additive-stressor combinations. Nutrient pollution and high water conductivity were two of the major factors contributing to the increased occurrence of L. cyprinacea. Therefore, the improvement of wastewater treatment processes and agricultural practices probably would help to reduce the occurrence of this parasite among native fish.

Individuals of migratory species may be more likely to become infected by parasites because they cross different regions along their route, thereby being exposed to a wider range of parasites during their annual cycle. Conversely, migration may have a protective effect since migratory behaviour allows hosts to escape environments presenting a high risk of infection. Haemosporidians are one of the best studied, most prevalent and diverse groups of avian parasites, however the impact of avian host migration on infection by these parasites remains controversial. We tested whether migratory behaviour influenced the prevalence and richness of avian haemosporidian parasites among South American birds. We used a dataset comprising ~ 11,000 bird blood samples representing 260 bird species from 63 localities and Bayesian multi-level models to test the impact of migratory behaviour on prevalence and lineage richness of two avian haemosporidian genera (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus). We found that fully migratory species present higher parasite prevalence and higher richness of haemosporidian lineages. However, we found no difference between migratory and non-migratory species when evaluating prevalence separately for Plasmodium and Haemoproteus, or for the richness of Plasmodium lineages. Nevertheless, our results indicate that migratory behaviour is associated with an infection cost, namely a higher prevalence and greater variety of haemosporidian parasites.

Canonical microsporidians are a group of obligate intracellular parasites of a wide range of hosts comprising ~1,300 species of >220 genera. Microsporidians are related to fungi, and many characterised and uncharacterized groups closely related to them have been discovered recently, filling the knowledge gaps between them. These groups assigned to the superphylum Opisthosporidia have provided several important insights into the evolution of diverse intracellular parasitic lineages within the tree of eukaryotes. The most studied among opisthosporidians, canonical microsporidians, were known to science more than 160 years ago, however, the classification of canonical Microsporidia has been challenging due to common morphological homoplasy, and accelerated evolutionary rates. Instead of morphological characters, ssrRNA sequences have been used as the primary data for the classification of canonical microsporidians. Previous studies have produced a useful backbone of the microsporidian phylogeny, but provided only some nodal support, causing some confusion. Here, we reconstructed phylogenetic trees of canonical microsporidians using Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood inferences. We included rRNA sequences of 126 described/named genera, by far the broadest taxon coverage to date. Overall, our trees show similar topology and recovered four of the five main clades demonstrated in previous studies (Clades 1, 3, 4 and 5). Family level clades were well resolved within each major clade, but many were discordant with the recently revised classification. Therefore, revision and some reshuffling, especially within and between Clades 1 and 3 are required. We also reconstructed phylogenetic trees of Opisthosporidia to better integrate the evolutionary history of canonical microsporidians in a broader context. We discuss several traits shared only by canonical microsporidians that may have contributed to their striking ecological success in diverse metazoans. More targeted studies on the neglected host groups will be of value for a better understanding of the evolutionary history of these interesting intracellular parasites.
