Species of Transversotrema Witenberg, 1944 (Transversotrematidae) occupy a unique ecological niche for the Trematoda, living externally under the scales of their teleost hosts. Previous studies of the genus have been impeded partly by limited variation in ribosomal DNA sequence data between closely related species and partly by a lack of morphometrically informative characters. Here, we assess richness of the tropical Indo-west Pacific species through parallel phylogenetic and morphometric analyses, generating cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial sequence data and morphometric data for hologenophore specimens from Australia, French Polynesia, Japan and Palau. These analyses demonstrate that molecular data provide the only reliable basis for species identification; host distribution, and to a lesser extent morphology, are useful for identifying just a few species of Transversotrema. We infer that a combination of morphological simplicity and infection site constraint has led to the group displaying exceptionally low morphological diversification. Phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial data broadly support previous systematic interpretations based on ribosomal data, but also demonstrate the presence of several morphologically and ecologically cryptic species. Ten new species are described, eight from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia (Transversotrema chrysallis n. sp., Transversotrema daphnidis n. sp., Transversotrema enceladi n. sp., Transversotrema hyperionis n. sp., Transversotrema iapeti n. sp., Transversotrema rheae n. sp., Transversotrema tethyos n. sp., and Transversotrema titanis n. sp.) and two from off Japan (Transversotrema methones n. sp. and Transversotrema panos n. sp.). Pathogens can influence the success of invaders. The Enemy Release Hypothesis predicts invaders encounter reduced pathogen abundance and diversity, while the Novel Weapons Hypothesis predicts invaders carry novel pathogens that spill over to competitors. We tested these hypotheses using avian malaria (haemosporidian) infections in the invasive myna ( Acridotheres tristis ), which was introduced to southeastern Australia from India and was secondarily expanded to the eastern Australian coast. Mynas and native Australian birds were screened in the secondary introduction range for haemosporidians ( Plasmodium and Haemoproteus spp.) and results were combined with published data from the myna’s primary introduction and native ranges. We compared malaria prevalence and diversity across myna populations to test for Enemy Release and used phylogeographic analyses to test for exotic strains acting as Novel Weapons. Introduced mynas carried significantly lower parasite diversity than native mynas and significantly lower Haemoproteus prevalence than native Australian birds. Despite commonly infecting native species that directly co-occur with mynas, Haemoproteus spp. were only recorded in introduced mynas in the primary introduction range and were apparently lost during secondary expansion. In contrast, Plasmodium infections were common in all ranges and prevalence was significantly higher in both introduced and native mynas than in native Australian birds. Introduced mynas carried several exotic Plasmodium lineages that were shared with native mynas, some of which also infected native Australian birds and two of which are highly invasive in other bioregions. Our results suggest that introduced mynas may benefit through escape from Haemoproteus spp. while acting as important reservoirs for Plasmodium spp., some of which are known exotic lineages. The Great Barrier Reef holds the richest array of marine life found anywhere in Australia, including a diverse and fascinating parasite fauna. Members of one group, the trematodes, occur as sexually mature adult worms in almost all Great Barrier Reef bony fish species. Although the first reports of these parasites were made 100 years ago, the fauna has been studied systematically for only the last 25 years. When the fauna was last reviewed in 1994 there were 94 species known from the Great Barrier Reef and it was predicted that there might be 2,270 in total. There are now 326 species reported for the region, suggesting that we are in a much improved position to make an accurate prediction of true trematode richness. Here we review the current state of knowledge of the fauna and the ways in which our understanding of this fascinating group is changing. Our best estimate of the true richness is now a range, 1,100–1,800 species. However there remains considerable scope for even these figures to be incorrect given that fewer than one-third of the fish species of the region have been examined for trematodes. Our goal is a comprehensive characterisation of this fauna, and we outline what work needs to be done to achieve this and discuss whether this goal is practically achievable or philosophically justifiable. Abstract: The genus Ceratomyxa (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) contains parasites that typically infect the gall bladders of marine teleosts. Species of this genus have also been recorded from elasmobranchs, while the best known species (Ceratomyxa shasta) is a systemic pathogen of fresh water salmonid fishes. Here we characterise 10 new species of Ceratomyxa from marine teleosts using morphometric and rDNA sequence data. A phylogeny of all Ceratomyxa species for which ssrDNA sequence is available was estimated by parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses. Mapping host fish taxonomy, geographic locality and morphology onto the phylogenetic tree provided some concordance of these characters to groups of Ceratomyxa species, but in no case was it consistent throughout the inferred phylogeny. The position of C. shasta as a sister species to the Ceratomyxa clade contradicts previous estimates of marine myxozoan phylogeny which suggested C. shasta was an unrelated lineage. Comparative DNA sequence data is available for more than 17% of some 200 described Ceratomyxa species and the genus now represents one of the most cohesive lineages within the Myxozoa. The independent branching of all atypical Ceratomyxa species and Palliatus indecorus, indicates a review of the diagnostic characters and possible division into more genera is warranted when further data are available. Abstract: The host specificity of blood parasites recovered from a survey of 527 birds in Cameroon and Gabon was examined at several levels within an evolutionary framework. Unique mitochondrial lineages of Haemoproteus were recovered from an average of 1.3 host species (maximum=3) and 1.2 host families (maximum=3) while lineages of Plasmodium were recovered from an average of 2.5 species (maximum=27) and 1.6 families (maximum=9). Averaged within genera, lineages of both Plasmodium and Haemoproteus were constrained in their host distribution relative to random expectations. However, while several individual lineages within both genera exhibited significant host constraint, host breadth varied widely among related lineages, particularly within the genus Plasmodium. Several lineages of Plasmodium exhibited extreme generalist host–parasitism strategies while other lineages appeared to have been constrained to certain host families over recent evolutionary history. Sequence data from two nuclear genes recovered from a limited sample of Plasmodium parasites indicated that, at the resolution of this study, inferences regarding host breadth were unlikely to be grossly affected by the use of parasite mitochondrial lineages as a proxy for biological species. The use of divergent host–parasitism strategies among closely related parasite lineages suggests that host range is a relatively labile character. Since host specificity may also influence parasite virulence, these results argue for considering the impact of haematozoa on avian hosts on a lineage-specific basis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Gyrodactylus rugiensis was originally described as a parasite occurring on the marine gobies Pomatoschistus minutus and Pomatoschistus microps. In our preliminary survey this species was also frequently found on Pomatoschistus pictus and Pomatoschistus lozanoi. Subsequent molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacers rDNA region revealed that this parasite actually represents a complex of two apparently cryptic species, one restricted to P. microps and the other shared by P. minutus, P. lozanoi and P. pictus. Morphometric analyses were conducted on 17 features of the opisthaptoral hard parts of specimens collected from all four host species. Standard discriminant analysis showed a clear separation of both genotypes by significant differences in marginal hook and ventral bar features. Statistical classifiers (linear discriminant analysis and nearest neighbours) resulted in an estimated misclassification rate of 4.7 and 3.1%, respectively. Based on molecular, morphological and statistical analyses a new species, Gyrodactylus rugiensoides is described. This species seems to display a lower host-specificity than generally observed for Gyrodactylus species as it infects three sympatric host species.However, seasonal and host-dependent morphometric variation is shown for G. rugiensoides collected on P. pictus. Host-switching and gene flow might be important factors preventing speciation on closely related and sympatric host species. The presence of host associated species complexes in this Gyrodactylus-Pomatoschistus system is also confirmed by the presence of two host-dependent genotypes within G. micropsi found on P. minutus and P. lozanoi, and P. microps, respectively. The biology of the monogenean skin parasite Entobdella soleae and its relationship with its host, the common sole (Solea solea), are probably better known than those of any other monogeneans. The author describes his early involvement with this parasite and the special features of parasite and host that make this relationship so suitable for parasitological studies. Aspects of the biology of E. soleae that have been investigated are briefly mentioned, but most of the paper is concerned with areas of the parasite''s biology that remain a challenge to determine. Unresolved areas are as follows: (1) the identity of the factor (or factors) in host skin mucus that stimulates hatching of the parasite''s eggs; (2) whether or not the larvae of the parasite are attracted to their host; (3) the nature of factors controlling the contrasting behaviour of adult parasites on the upper and lower surfaces of the host; (4) how nutrients are supplied to the remote regions of the haptor; (5) whether the host has any control via its immune system over parasite invasion success and survival; (6) how the parasite copes with the migratory habits of some sole populations, assuming that such populations are infested with the parasite. The intimacy of this parasite/host relationship is its most remarkable feature, the reflection of which, not surprisingly, is the greatly restricted host range of the parasite. E. soleae has been reported from only three host species, all highly specialised bottom-dwelling members of Solea. It is all the more surprising that relatives of E. soleae, such as Neobenedenia melleni, retain the ability to parasitise an enormous range of hosts.
