Vehicle lightweighting is a current focus of research in the automotive industry, aiming to reduce vehicle weight, improve fuel economy, and reduce tailpipe emissions. One mechanical joining technology that can improve the performance and sustainability of vehicles is clinching. Clinching is characterized by its lightweight, high strength, and aesthetically pleasing green features, and it is mainly used to join metal or non-metal materials. In this article, a comprehensive overview of clinching is provided, including performance evaluation and testing methods. The influence of section parameters on joint performance is analyzed, and the latest finite element simulation and numerical simulation methods are introduced. Additionally, the relevant testing methods for static and fatigue performance are summarized. Furthermore, new environmental testing and non-destructive testing technologies are introduced. Finally, potential research directions for clinched joining technologies are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
