Utilizing primarily the information and data compiled by both the editorial board of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as well as that of former nuclear war planner, Daniel Ellsberg, this paper discusses a number of heretofore classified or little publicly known dimensions of the nuclear war planning of the United States and other nuclear armed nation states, including policies of first use and command and control, the occurrence of false alarms and accidents, and the dynamics of nuclear detonation that would result in nuclear winter and worldwide famine. As such, the focus on these topics is an attempt to ameliorate both our shared ignorance regarding the once again growing threat of nuclear war, and its consequence—nuclear winter, as well as, the tendency of large groups to engage in collective denial in relation to thinking about the unthinkable, utilizing a definition from psychoanalysis of the defense mechanism of denial. As a key term in Lacanian psychoanalysis, the concept of the Other regulates the subject's desire. While it is absent as a physical entity, it commands and shapes the individual's psyche via language unconsciously. This paper provides a close reading of Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman to explore the ways everyone in the play is under the control of the discourse of the Other. To do so, this paper provides a theoretical structure based on Lacan's definition of the term and its relationship to language and signification to finally view its various manifestations in McDonagh's play. Psychoanalytic discourse in relation to the situation in historic Palestine is subject to both ideologically‐based and anxiety‐driven inhibitions and restrictions that conflict with the discipline's claim to be able to "stay with" difficult issues, to "think the unthinkable". This situation is understood as a social pathology, and its impacts are explored through a literature review (explaining the paper's length). It considers works that directly seek to protect Zionism from its critics, and texts whose purpose is to demonstrate the relevance of psychoanalytic concepts to the study of social injustice. The qualities of this contemporary discourse are considered alongside Freud's comments on the conditions for freedom of thought within psychoanalysis, and the example he provided in his comments on politics and society. Rather than a psychoanalytic contribution to understanding an issue of public concern, the paper attempts to describe aspects of psychoanalytic culture itself. It aims to facilitate deeper reflection amongst clinicians, on both an individual and collective level, regarding their contemporary engagement with coloniality and the social responsibilities of the psychoanalytic community. Puerto Rico is one of the world's oldest colonies, with thousands of its people dislocated to the United States (U.S.) mainland in the wake of Hurricane Maria and the ongoing economic crisis. However, since the 2019 protests ousting then governor Rosello, Puerto Ricans across the Diaspora are imagining new emancipatory realities, including the possibility of independence. This paper draws on data from the Colonial Mentality Study in New York City (CMS‐NYC, N = 19) to explore how Puerto Ricans in the Diaspora narrativize new political possibilities despite the challenges posed by post‐disaster migration and racial and economic inequality. Using a decolonial psychoanalytic approach, we show how two colonial logics—moving "up and out" of Puerto Rico and "up and in" American capitalism—are textured by discourses of racial inferiority and upward mobility, and illustrate how these are experienced by Puerto Ricans who identify as Multiracial (Multiracial‐Identified Puerto Rican, N = 11), and Puerto Ricans who identify as Black (BIPR, N = 8). Reading our findings in the sociogenic context of race, class, and colonialism in Puerto Rico, and race and class among Puerto Ricans in NYC, we explore how racism toward Puerto Ricans and racism among Puerto Ricans intersect with notions of upward mobility, revealing how anti‐Blackness supports economic inequality in the U.S. mainland alongside with Puerto Rico's colonial situation. Complementing decolonial psychoanalytic theory with the Afro‐Puerto Rican radical tradition, we outline the implications of this research for future scholarship, clinical practice, and political action. Cricket in India has evolved much beyond its fundamental definition as a game or form of entertainment in the present century. The liberalization process in the 1990s, followed by the drastic social changes in the country, impacted the game, leading it to acquire new meanings as cultural text. Currently, Indian cricket forms part of collective enjoyment, forming people's habitus and playing a central ideological role in the politics of ethnonationalism. This article attempts to analyze Indian Cricket using Slavoj Zizek's concept of "national Thing," to critically understand its potential to evoke hyper‐nationalism in the Indian polity. The concept of "national Thing," proposed by Zizek, postulates that the recourse to nationalism can cause a pleasure‐in‐pain situation and evoke extreme "enjoyment" (jouissance), which functions on the idea of sudden sense of loss. Drawing insights from this, this paper theoretically investigates sport‐induced nationalism in cricket in the backdrop of escalating neo‐nationalist sentiments in India. Additionally, the article expounds on how cricket becomes a "lost Thing" in Indian popular culture by critically analyzing the Indian film Kai Po Che (2013), in which cricket emerges as a social and political entity, intervening with the lives of ordinary youths in India. This correspondence introduces several distinct current efforts by Ukrainian psychoanalytic practitioners and researchers from various clinical, scholarly, and applied fields to support the sustainable development of psychoanalytic training and work in the context of the ongoing 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Among these developments are (a) the translation of the classic and contemporary psychoanalytic texts into the Ukrainian language, (b) the promotion of Ukrainian psychoanalytic contributions within Ukraine and abroad, and (c) the support of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy as an evidence‐based practice to be officially recognized in Ukraine. The initiatives were integrated with the launch of a scholarly peer‐reviewed online open‐access journal—the Ukrainian Psychoanalytic Journal—which has been confirmed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science as a scientific periodical. In addition to describing these initiatives, this contribution serves as an invitation to international psychoanalytic audiences to contribute to these processes, including via workshops on psychoanalytic writing and publication, joint panel discussions, or collaborative research projects with Ukrainian psychoanalytic professionals. In this paper five members of the "Community Psychoanalytic Track and Consortium" (CPT&C) in San Francisco, California, each holding different positionalities and functioning in different roles, come together in dialog with the shared aim to bring themselves and their readers inside the CPT&C. This writing project recapitulates principles of the CPT&C's vision itself: to form polyvocal groups with the shared task of supporting each other in our various roles, and members of community mental health organizations in their work and lives. Abstract: This is the fourth paper in a series proposing a psychoanalytic concept of community. The third paper of the series centered on the unconscious psychological tasks involved in creating and sustaining a community and in it achieving its reason for existence; tasks such as the formation of bonds, identity and boundary. In this fourth paper we propose that the effectiveness with which a community can carry out these tasks determines how well that community is able to function. The successful performance of the tasks is dependent on: (1) a community's capacity for psychic function, that is, its capacity to process internal tension and conflict, and both everyday and adverse experiences; (2) the effectiveness of its social defense against anxiety; and (3) its adaptability to changes and challenges in its environment. It playfully satirises Hollywood with its silent era, its glossy nostalgia, its mystique that conceals its brittle cynicism. Norma Desmond is satirised but she is also the means by which Hollywood stands exposed. In many ways, the audience like Joe Gillis thinks they are in on the joke, till it turns against them. This paper argues that we can read this as a cautionary tale for psychoanalysts as we enter into an analysis of the patient, only to discover that we have been recruited into a world that never was in our control. During the twentieth century took place a "battle of paradigms" involving all disciplines that inform Psychiatry and Psychology. Basically, the dispute was about the respective contribution of science and hermeneutics in disciplinary paradigms. Psychoanalysis has not been absent from this battle; it is still debated whether psychoanalysis should be considered a scientific discipline or a hermeneutic discipline. In this paper, the author reviews his 40‐year career as a university professor of psychiatry and as a psychoanalyst, during which he has been a committed observer and active participant of psychoanalytic and psychiatric disputes. This paper describes the nature of today's corporatized health care system in the United States, offering examples of the psychological toll it takes on clinicians at all levels. It details corporate practices that disenfranchise practitioners from exercising their clinical judgment and from offering input to system administrators about problematic patient care experiences. It discusses the sense of frustration, resignation and moral injury that can permeate their work lives and disrupt their sense of effectiveness and well‐being in this context. Following this background is a psychoanalytic analysis of narratives from two physicians about their corporate health care experiences. Two case studies follow, in which a nurse and a physician entered psychoanalytic psychotherapy to process the destructive psychological impact of their work environments. In this paper we describe how we created an undergraduate course in psychoanalysis for Colorado College students at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, how the course is constructed in terms of meeting with psychoanalysts, how we create an optimal ambiance for the course, how it is part of a psychoanalysis minor, and why it has been so meaningful for the students. In this paper, we expand upon our use of the cocoon metaphor for understanding and working with organizations from a psychodynamic perspective. Conceived as both defensive and generative, cocoons are relational phenomena that manifest throughout organizations and risk being mistaken as dysfunctional entities in need of dismantling. To illustrate the utility of the cocoon metaphor in conceptualizing organizational problems, we present a case study of a hospital restructuring following its acquisition by a for‐profit health care system and driven by efficiency and cost‐savings. The resulting disruptions across operating divisions created a set of problems that necessitated the help of an outside consultant. Engaging members of the organization in the task of solving their own problems entailed recognizing their (inter)subjective experiences and behaviors as more than just defensive hiding, or aggressive attacking, but also as holding the potential for new ways of working and relating. It also entailed showing leaders how to replace environmental impingement in the form of "looking for mistakes" with what we call, borrowing from Marion Milner (1969), a "waiting watchfulness" that fostered understanding of the emotional world inside, outside, and at the boundaries of cocoons to promote organizational learning and meaningful change. This paper reviews significant aspects of the work of Trigant Burrow (1875–1950), an early psychoanalyst who, while less well known than many of his contemporaries, was, as a number of commentators have argued, well ahead of his time. This article discusses four areas of his theory: the preconscious, the nest instinct, and the love subject; primary unity, primary intersubjectivity, and the "I" persona; social images, social neurosis, and the social unconscious; and, finally, group, community, and society. The article argues that the study of Burrow's work is important, firstly, in recognizing the historical antecedents of what may be viewed as a social turn in both psychoanalysis and psychotherapy; and, secondly, in helping psychoanalytic thinking to be more open to diversity with regard to marginalized theory and people. Harm reduction approaches to heroin addiction treatment are safe and effective, particularly those using medication‐assisted therapy, yet they remain underutilized in the drug treatment field. This paper posits the need for a psychoanalytic formulation of harm reduction. It draws on object relations theory, to illustrate the ways in which harm reduction, as a philosophy and as a practice, maps onto the particular developmental and attachment themes of addiction. It explores heroin addiction and harm reduction at the intersection of the psyche and the social and calls upon psychoanalysis to challenge oppressive systems in the lives of heroin users. In the present paper we argue that Sigmund Freud's analysis of mental disorders is based almost exclusively on language and thus it omits other semiotic modalities, prominently visuality. Freud's psychoanalytical theory originates in the discovery that the speech of mentally ill patients is a basis for their treatment. A psychoanalyst is an interpreter who 'translates' patient's speech into expression of original, suppressed thoughts. However, this analytical process was never applicable on psychotic patients, since their speech and thought processes are often distorted. This insistence on language can be limiting. Patients can produce 'material' for interpretation not only in a form of language, but for instance in a form of visuality. In this respect, art brut, the visual art of the mentally ill, can be analyzed. But in order to do so, we have to reconsider Freud's original concept of translation of one level of signs (neurotic symptoms) into another (basis of the neurosis). An analysis of visual art of the mentally ill can rather focus on the relations between specific signs of the painting in order to understand how psychosis works. Abstract: The topic of migration, flight and trauma is as old as civilization, as its myths, fairytales, and its legends such as “The Odyssey” and well‐known literary figures like Oedipus and Medea (first section of the paper). However, the current refugee crisis in Europe has led to societal tensions and even splitting among large groups, such as in Germany where enormous empathy for the refugees' plight can be observed on the one hand, and hostilities, anxiety and xenophobic feelings and actions on the other hand. In the second section of the paper, the authors summarize some of the psychoanalytical concepts trying to understand some of the unconscious roots of xenophobia, antisemitism, fundamentalism and nationalism. Another psychoanalytical contribution in support of refugees comes from the body of psychoanalytic and interdisciplinary research on trauma and its transgenerational transmission (third section). Therewith psychoanalysis has produced a large conceptual, research and clinical knowledge base, which we may consider to be one of the contributions of psychoanalysis to current interdisciplinary and public discourse on refugees and immigrants. In the last section of this paper the authors summarize the pilot project STEP‐BY‐STEP which was carried out from January 2016 until April 2017 in a first reception center in Darmstadt. Concepts, applications and clinical experiences are presented for discussion. The pilot project has been quite successful and is serving as a model to be implemented during the next five years by four Psychosocial Centers for supporting refugees in Hesse. Given the large problems society faces in response to the “Refugee Crisis”, the authors consider their labors a mere drop in the endless ocean of pain, despair and sufferings of thousands of refugees who have escaped war, terror and poverty in their home countries and are hoping for a better life in Europe and elsewhere. In the first of three papers the current philosophical, sociological and ecological approaches to 'community' were considered from a psychoanalytic perspective. This second paper aims to arrive at a set of principles that will underpin a psychoanalytic concept of communities. Those principles include: psychoanalytic understandings of groups; the unconscious of the collective; the subjectivity and inter-subjectivity of individuals and collectives; the symbolic function of an abstract concept; and the processes involved in making sense, such as mentalization and symbolization. The emerging psychoanalytic framework conceptualizes communities in terms of their collective psychological tasks, such as the maintenance of shared identification and boundaries, their responses to trauma and the work of mourning, rather than by their geographical or sociological characteristics. This new approach to the concept of community also highlights the utility of distinguishing the nature of groups by their respective, collective psychological tasks. This special issue on community mental health focuses on the ways in which several innovative mental health programs across the United States have risen to the challenge of incorporating psychodynamic principles into their clinical practice. Contrasted with these domestic programs are reports from a number of countries in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East in which local clinicians describe how community mental health programs in their countries are tackling these issues. In this introduction, we emphasize factors common to the populations these authors serve, the organizational challenges they face, and the successes they achieve by way of their skill, creativity, and perseverance. We underscore the ways in which they articulate how psychoanalytic thinking, training, and practices have evolved in response to lessons learned and changing political, economic and cultural climates. We conclude that applied psychoanalysis, and particularly psychoanalysis applied to community mental health has, in some ways, been at the forefront of change in psychoanalytic practice in general. Abstract: The paper proposes the value of a number of psychoanalytic concepts in the understanding of the intra‐psychic, interpersonal and transpersonal processes that are involved in recognition. It is argued that there is an urgent need for such understandings, given the current “disadvantage gap indices.” The importance of dreaming (as a manifestation of what Bion calls “alpha functioning”), in the form of collaborative partnerships which can facilitate recognition, is highlighted. The value of an adaptation of Fairbairn's Endopsychic Model as a means of understanding tensions that may develop in such partnerships is also considered, as is Bion's concept of the “container‐contained”. This latter concept is also proposed as a useful psychoanalytic lens through which to understand how a colonial invasion destroyed a vital container‐contained relationship for Aboriginal people and the traumatizing effect this had on individuals and communities. The paper concludes by suggesting how partnering initiatives, especially those which involve psychoanalytic understanding, might make a modest contribution to the aims of recognition and their over‐arching goal of uniting our nation and bringing all Australians together on an equal footing. A new concept of community is proposed in this third paper of the series, 'Towards a psychoanalytic concept of community'. This concept emphasizes the unconscious, collective, psychological tasks involved in creating and sustaining a community, as well as the tasks undertaken by the community in achieving its reason for being. One of the core psychological tasks is the creation of bonding among its members. When a community is being formed it experiences itself subjectively as 'us', and needs to come to terms with what is 'not us'. A set of psychological tasks comes into play and they relate to the formation and maintenance of its boundary and identity. Each of these psychological tasks is underpinned by unconscious psychic processes; such as symbolization to create boundary, projective and introjective identifications to create bonds and identity. ABSTRACT This paper is about my supervision of the two probationary psychologists who were employed in a maximum-security prison to run a high-intensity violence intervention program for maximum-security inmates. The psychoanalytic frame became the initial trigger, a scapegoat, for my dismissal as their forensic psychology supervisor. An informal ministerial enquiry followed. I was re-instated. The context of this breakout/breakdown was the ruptured container of a maximum-security prison which violently torpedoed into the therapeutic container and reflective edge of the consulting room. The prison's walls hide the dark secrets of crimes. The haunting screams of those murdered are silenced but they ricochet down the corridors of the cell-blocks. The inmates held captive cry 'Mummy, help me, please help me!', but their cries have been killed off long ago, neither heard nor answered. This paper is a tribute to the psychoanalytic frame. Much has been written in psychoanalytic literature about the many gods and mortals of Greek mythology, however, a search on PEPWEB with the keywords 'Hindu mythology' revealed scant results. The fact that, barring some exceptions that may shed light on the original Oedipus, Ganesha (Kakar, 2005; Tang & Smith, 1996) a culture which acknowledges 33 million gods and uncountable parables has generally gone untapped for its psychological sap probably serves as a reminder that psychoanalysis has been mainly a westerner's craft. With this essay I intend to share thoughts that have emerged during my own analysis, memories from childhood, and reveries in adulthood. Teaching psychoanalytic principles to undergraduates is a rewarding and daunting task. Due to societal biases and current academic trends, students arrive with a variety of implicit fears and wishes with respect to the course content. Syllabus development is a unique challenge because there are no standardized foundational concepts. Course requirements, most notably written assignments, are another facet of course development that each instructor chooses to suit their individual goals. This essay is based on 3 years of teaching a senior seminar on psychoanalysis. Data on 39 student course evaluations is described, analyzed, and discussed. Besides offering individualized and shared psychological causes it is necessary to understand environmental, cultural, and historical influences. 'Community' is a word that is used frequently in everyday exchanges and, increasingly, in public policies and government funding strategies. Mental health promotion campaigns strongly promote 'community-focused' initiatives. The predominant discourse on the topic of 'community' has been from socio-political perspectives. Very little has been written specifically about the nature of communities, or their psychodynamics, from a psychoanalytic perspective. This paper, the first of three, considers three major conceptualizations of communities - philosophical, sociological and ecological - from a psychoanalytic perspective. Within this paradigm, a community, unless arbitrarily defined, is as much a subjective notion as it is an objective entity. Psychoanalysis has much to add to the current thinking on this subject by adding a description of its dynamic qualities, and highlighting the subjective experience (both individual and collective, conscious and unconscious) of communities. In this paper the author shall try to illuminate the advantages of using a psychoanalytical model in our understanding of the forensic patient. There is the problem that sometimes the judicial and psychoanalytic approaches appear to be incompatible, though both are inherently intertwined with societal mores through the nature of anti-social, delinquent actions usually associated with such cases. Abstract: This paper aims at reflecting on the impact of social catastrophes and crises that have caused personal and social traumas in recent Argentine history. The possibility of processing social traumas requires the intervention of social practices that involve the reconstruction of social bonds and the lifting of the denial of responsibility for the crime. The authors give an account of Argentine's social catastrophes and address the complexity of the subjective processes of individuals who have lived immersed in disturbing and violent situations or in permanently stressful contexts for prolonged periods of time. The military dictatorship (1976–1984), the blasting of the Central Jewish Community Headquarters (1994), and the economic bankruptcy (2001–2004) are related along with their sequels, all of which have produced deep injuries to the mental health of a considerable segment of the population. The history of the beginnings and expansion of psychoanalysis in Argentina is reviewed in an attempt to explain how the distressing vicissitudes of democracy and the coexisting social catastrophes have caused psychoanalysts along with mental health professionals to become increasingly concerned with the best methods to deal with patients who have undergone severe trauma due to the socio‐economic and political events. The authors' personal experience working at mental health institutions and as members of the teams which developed assistance programs are presented, as well as several conceptual developments, programs and investigations generated by Argentine psychoanalysts who have been actively committed to social work from that time onwards. It is concluded that it should be therapeutically beneficial to build creative networks between mental health intervention, psychotherapy, community projects and research. These networks can generate new and deeper understanding about the overlap between individual trauma and social trauma which may lead to the design of programs appropriate to each particular community's needs. Utilizing primarily the information and data compiled by both the editorial board of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as well as that of former nuclear war planner, Daniel Ellsberg, this paper discusses a number of heretofore classified or little publicly known dimensions of the nuclear war planning of the United States and other nuclear armed nation states, including policies of first use and command and control, the occurrence of false alarms and accidents, and the dynamics of nuclear detonation that would result in nuclear winter and worldwide famine. As such, the focus on these topics is an attempt to ameliorate both our shared ignorance regarding the once again growing threat of nuclear war, and its consequence—nuclear winter, as well as, the tendency of large groups to engage in collective denial in relation to thinking about the unthinkable, utilizing a definition from psychoanalysis of the defense mechanism of denial. ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to explore how Shakespeare drew on contemporary life to assist society to manage profound loss, uncertainty and anxiety. This was achieved through providing a forum, both in the 'here and now', via the plays and other works, and through creating a body of work for future generations to mine. This evolved over time to penetrate and fertilize the global community. In these ways Shakespeare helps us all to metabolize anxiety and despair and continue to move forward in the struggle of life. Abstract: In this paper the importance of psychological recognition as a life and death matter is developed referencing the writings of psychoanalysts Winnicott and Benjamin and philosopher Hegel. I suggest that radical hope, a notion developed by Lear and radical doubt can provide a mode of story transformation from a state of mind of terra nullius to one of recognition. Staying in the “eye of the storm,” a place Bion asks us to be – a place inherent in the world of trauma – can become a holding place of lived and living emotional experience, metamorphosing raging turbulence into dynamic anchorage, dialectic potential spaces and fluid, vital, new beginnings. Abstract: Psychoanalysts who study the internal processes of group formation and functioning have a good deal to offer in understanding Donald Trump's powerful appeal to a segment of American voters. In this paper, we examine how this politician has ignited the fierce loyalty of a dedicated group of followers. We further use group analytic concepts to consider the ways in which his followers in turn exert their influence on Trump himself. Finally, referring to the literature on group leadership, we consider the inevitable impact of a leader whose communications often stray from logic and demonstrable fact and which seem to intentionally promote group regression and fantasy. Abstract: Matrix, Wachowsky sisters' blockbuster, depicts an ominous scenario where sensory reality is illusory and the feigned product of hostile forces. Such general mistrust towards the contents of experience has underlain the whole course of Western philosophy from Plato to Descartes. The paper explores the hypothesis the movie reflects a basic human anxiety about unconscious representation of interpersonal reality. Relying on some basic insights of Freud's and Fairbairn's the author propose a model of human dependence where the passive sharing of the love‐object's unconscious phantasies is a basic dimension. ABSTRACT The dominant treatment methods for male sexual dysfunction are currently biomedical and pharmacological. Historical analysis of the therapeutic field, however, shows that this trend is quite recent. This paper provides a historical examination of the treatment of male sexual dysfunction, analyzing the role of psychology and psychoanalysis in the treatment field. At various points in history, sexual therapies have accounted for the biological, psychological and social factors of male sexual dysfunction; this attention, however, has rarely been balanced. By tracing the evolution of treatment models, this paper shows how psychological and psychoanalytic principles have influenced the treatment of male sexual dysfunction. Despite the recent dominance of cognitive behavioral and biomedical techniques, the paper concludes, sex therapy is a discipline in flux, and with the increased push for integrative and multi-modal treatment models, the (re-)introduction of psychodynamic techniques in mainstream sex therapy is a promising possibility for future clinical practice. ABSTRACT When a performer gives a public performance, there is awareness and some form of engagement with the group of people who constitute the audience. Perceptions of this 'audience group' may affect the performer in various ways, sometimes contributing to 'stage fright', sometimes stimulating the performer to an especially uplifting and thrilling performance. Depending on their art form, performers may also be highly conscious of another group (in some arts referred to as a troupe), their fellow actors, dancers, vocalists or musicians. In this paper, we review relevant psychoanalytic, psychological and theater literature. We then report on findings from an aspect of our qualitative research into performance anxiety with musicians, actors, and public speakers who were interviewed concerning their experiences of performing. These performers gave detailed reflections on their relationship with audiences and fellow performers and experiences of performing, including debilitating fright, but also those of an uplifting, joyous, sometimes spiritual nature. This paper proposes the existence of an intrinsic, non-conflictual altruistic impulse, and presents arguments from human behavior studies, evolutionary theory, attachment theory, and psychoanalytic writings to support this thesis. Altruism has been previously regarded as a defensive phenomenon based on assumptions about the superego, competitiveness, individualism, and self-interested libido. This paper proposes that the element of primary other-orientedness makes possible a non-neurotic component of oedipal resolution, based on triadic love. This paper reminds the 'share holders' of the international psychoanalytical enterprise of their collective responsibility towards a major social, national and moral injustice that has been grasping the attention of the remaining world for many decades. This involves the suffering of the Palestinian people who are under a brutal siege of occupation, intimidation, and disenfranchisement. Lacking a world-endorsed nationhood, threatened in the preservation of their culture, barred from travel, used and abused by Arab regimes, and, often ignored by the international community, the Palestinians strive to save their dignity - sometimes by political praxis and at other times by violent resistance. This paper offers a description of this national/political/humanitarian tragedy in the hope of enhancing knowledge, engendering empathy, and mobilizing reparative action. This paper comprises an encounter by the author in 1992 with the distinguished Northern Ireland psychotherapist and political leader, The Lord Alderdice of Knock. Born in Northern Ireland in 1955, John Alderdice graduated in Medicine in 1978, and qualified as a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1983, followed by higher specialist training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Alderdice joined the Northern Ireland Alliance Party in 1978, and in 1987 was elected Party Leader. Raised to the peerage as Baron Alderdice in 1996, he was one of the key negotiators of the Good Friday Agreement signed in 1998. This 1997 paper includes the author's interview with Alderdice, together with his observations on Alderdice's two-handed psychoanalytic and political practice, his “political therapy”. Drawing upon the author's roots as a Belfast-born Australian, the paper reflects on the possibilities of Alderdice's applied psychoanalysis – of politics “off the couch”. Psychoanalysis has been confronted with the conundrum of integrating the use of psychotropic medications with the talking cure, with understandable concern about the substitution of a pill for working through. This paper addresses a unique situation in which the “pill” constitutes hormone-blocking drugs or cross-sex hormones to treat transgender youth. Clinical material of a 16-year-old transgender female is presented and followed by a review of several aspects of transgender hormone treatments. Winnicott's construct of the True and False Self is then used to argue that the True Gender Self of transgender youth is not the gender assigned to them at birth but the gender they experience themselves to be. The paper concludes by suggesting that if hormone blockers and cross-sex hormone therapies facilitate the strengthening of a youth's authentic gender self, the administration of those drugs is in the best interests of the transgender youth's healthy development. This paper asks what is evidence-based psychology and looks at the ways in which psychoanalysts have sought to engage with the challenges posed by this method of deciding best science. The paper examines the evidence for the evidence-based method and looks at how psychoanalysts have attempted to shift the scientific debate from evidence-based models to practice-based, outcome driven models and, ultimately, to a patient-therapy approach that seeks to marry best practice with a spirit of open-minded assessment of alternatives.
