By using the method of dynamical systems, this paper studies the exact traveling wave solutions and their bifurcations in the Gardner equation. Exact parametric representations of all wave solutions as well as the explicit analytic solutions are given. In this paper, we consider a planar dynamical system with a piecewise linear function containing two dropping sections and approximating some continuous nonlinear function. Studying all possible local and global bifurcations of its limit cycles, we prove that such a piecewise linear dynamical system, with five singular points, can have at most four limit cycles, three of which surround the foci one by one and the fourth limit cycle surrounds all of the singular points of this system. This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the solutions u(x,t) of the Swift–Hohenberg equation with quintic nonlinearity on a one-dimensional domain (0, L). With α and the length L of the domain regarded as bifurcation parameters, branches of nontrivial solutions bifurcating from the trivial solution at certain points are shown. Local behavior of these branches are also studied. Global bounds for the solutions u(x,t) are established and then the global attractor is investigated. Finally, with the help of a center manifold analysis, two types of structures in the bifurcation diagrams are presented when the bifurcation points are closer, and their stabilities are analyzed. This paper investigates limit cycling behavior of observer-based controlled mechanical systems with friction compensation. The limit cycling is induced by the interaction between friction and friction compensation, which is based on the estimated velocity. The limit cycling phenomenon, which is experimentally observed in a rotating arm manipulator, is analyzed through computational bifurcation analysis. The computed bifurcation diagram confirms that the limit cycles can be eliminated by enlarging observer gains and controller gains at the cost of a steady state error. I review the early (1885–1975) and more recent history of dynamical systems theory, identifying key principles and themes, including those of dimension reduction, normal form transformation and unfolding of degenerate cases. I end by briefly noting recent extensions and applications in nonlinear fluid and solid mechanics, with a nod toward mathematical biology. I argue throughout that this essentially mathematical theory was largely motivated by nonlinear scientific problems, and that after a long gestation it is propagating throughout the sciences and technology. Complex vibrations of an Euler–Bernoulli beam with different types of nonlinearities are considered. An arbitrary beam clamping is considered, and deflection constraints (point barriers) are introduced in some beam points along its length. The influence of a constraint, as well as of the amplitude and frequency of excitation on the vibrations is analyzed. We propose a computer-assisted approach to studying the effective continuum behavior of spatially discrete evolution equations. The advantage of the approach is that the "coarse model" (the continuum, effective equation) need not be explicitly constructed. The method only uses a time-integration code for the discrete problem and judicious choices of initial data and integration times; our bifurcation computations are based on the so-called Recursive Projection Method (RPM) with arc-length continuation [Shroff & Keller, 1993]. The technique is used to monitor features of the genuinely discrete problem such as the pinning of coherent structures and its results are compared to quasi-continuum approaches such as the ones based on Padé approximations. Dynamical behaviors of a three-dimensional autonomous chaotic system with two double-scroll attractors are studied. Some basic properties such as bifurcation, routes to chaos, periodic windows and compound structure are demonstrated with various numerical examples.
