Background. The deterministic fiber tracking method has the advantage of high computational efficiency and good repeatability, making it suitable for the noninvasive estimation of brain structural connectivity in clinical fields. To address the issue of the current classical deterministic method tending to deviate in the tracking direction in the region of crossing fiber region, in this paper, we propose an adaptive correction-based deterministic white matter fiber tracking method, named FTACTD. Methods. The proposed FTACTD method can accurately track white matter fibers by adaptively adjusting the deflection direction strategy based on the tensor matrix and the input fiber direction of adjacent voxels. The degree of correction direction changes adaptively according to the shape of the diffusion tensor, mimicking the actual tracking deflection angle and direction. Furthermore, both forward and reverse tracking techniques are employed to track the entire fiber. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated and quantified using both simulated and real brain datasets. Various indicators such as invalid bundles (IB), valid bundles (VB), invalid connections (IC), no connections (NC), and valid connections (VC) are utilized to assess the performance of the proposed method on simulated data and real diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data. Results. The experimental results of the simulated data show that the FTACTD method tracks outperform existing methods, achieving the highest number of VB with a total of 13 bundles. Additionally, it identifies the least number of incorrect fiber bundles, with only 32 bundles identified as wrong. Compared to the FACT method, the FTACTD method reduces the number of NC by 36.38%. In terms of VC, the FTACTD method surpasses even the best performing SD_Stream method among deterministic methods by 1.64%. Extensive in vivo experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in terms of tracking more accurate and complete fiber paths, resulting in improved continuity. Conclusion. The FTACTD method proposed in this study indicates superior tracking results and provides a methodological basis for the investigating, diagnosis, and treatment of brain disorders associated with white matter fiber deficits and abnormalities. This paper extends our previous method for COVID-19 diagnosis, proposing an enhanced solution for detecting COVID-19 from computed tomography (CT) images using a lean transfer learning-based model. To decrease model misclassifications, two key steps of image processing were employed. Firstly, the uppermost and lowermost slices were removed, preserving sixty percent of each patient's slices. Secondly, all slices underwent manual cropping to emphasize the lung areas. Subsequently, resized CT scans (224 × 224) were input into an Xception transfer learning model with a modified output. Both Xception's architecture and pretrained weights were leveraged in the method. A big and rigorously annotated database of CT images was used to verify the method. The number of patients/subjects in the dataset is more than 5000, and the number and shape of the slices in each CT scan varies greatly. Verification was made both on the validation partition and on the test partition of unseen images. Results on the COV19-CT database showcased not only improvement from our previous solution and the baseline but also comparable performance to the highest-achieving methods on the same dataset. Further validation studies could explore the scalability and adaptability of the developed methodologies across diverse healthcare settings and patient populations. Additionally, investigating the integration of advanced image processing techniques, such as automated region of interest detection and segmentation algorithms, could enhance the efficiency and accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis. Acute ischemic stroke represents a cerebrovascular disease, for which it is practical, albeit challenging to segment and differentiate infarct core from salvageable penumbra brain tissue. Ischemic stroke causes the variation of cerebral blood flow and heat generation due to metabolism. Therefore, the temperature is modified in the ischemic stroke region. In this paper, we incorporate acute ischemic stroke temperature profile to reinforce segmentation accuracy in MRI. Pennes bioheat equation was used to generate brain thermal images that may provide rich information regarding the temperature change in acute ischemic stroke lesions. The thermal images were generated by calculating the temperature of the brain with acute ischemic stroke. Then, U-Net was used in this paper for the segmentation of acute ischemic stroke. A dataset of 3192 images was created to train U-Net using k -fold crossvalidation. The training time was about 10 hours and 35 minutes in NVIDIA GPU. Next, the obtained trained model was compared with recent methods to analyze the effect of the ischemic stroke temperature profile in segmentation. The obtained results show that significant parts of acute ischemic stroke and background areas are segmented only in thermal images, which proves the importance of using thermal information to improve the segmentation outcomes in MRI diagnosis. Iris has specific advantages, which can record all organ conditions, body construction, and psychological disorders. Traces related to the intensity or deviation of organs caused by the disease are recorded systematically and patterned on the iris and its surroundings. The pattern that appears on the iris can be recognized by using image processing techniques. Based on the pattern in the iris image, this paper aims to provide an alternative noninvasive method for the early detection of DM and HC. In this paper, we perform detection based on iris images for two diseases, DM and HC simultaneously, by developing the invariant Haralick feature on quantized images with 256, 128, 64, 32, and 16 gray levels. The feature extraction process does early detection based on iris images. Researchers and scientists have introduced many methods, one of which is the feature extraction of the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). Early detection based on the iris is done using the volumetric GLCM development, namely, 3D-GLCM. Based on 3D-GLCM, which is formed at a distance of d = 1 and in the direction of 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°, 270°, and 315°, it is used to calculate Haralick features and develop Haralick features which are invariant to the number of quantization gray levels. The test results show that the invariant feature with a gray level of 256 has the best identification performance. In dataset I, the accuracy value is 97.92, precision is 96.88, and recall is 95.83, while in dataset II, the accuracy value is 95.83, precision is 89.69, and recall is 91.67. This paper presents an automated and noninvasive technique to discriminate COVID-19 patients from pneumonia patients using chest X-ray images and artificial intelligence. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test is commonly administered to detect COVID-19. However, the RT-PCR test necessitates person-to-person contact to administer, requires variable time to produce results, and is expensive. Moreover, this test is still unreachable to the significant global population. The chest X-ray images can play an important role here as the X-ray machines are commonly available at any healthcare facility. However, the chest X-ray images of COVID-19 and viral pneumonia patients are very similar and often lead to misdiagnosis subjectively. This investigation has employed two algorithms to solve this problem objectively. One algorithm uses lower-dimension encoded features extracted from the X-ray images and applies them to the machine learning algorithms for final classification. The other algorithm relies on the inbuilt feature extractor network to extract features from the X-ray images and classifies them with a pretrained deep neural network VGG16. The simulation results show that the proposed two algorithms can extricate COVID-19 patients from pneumonia with the best accuracy of 100% and 98.1%, employing VGG16 and the machine learning algorithm, respectively. Inference of tumor and edema areas from brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data remains challenging owing to the complex structure of brain tumors, blurred boundaries, and external factors such as noise. To alleviate noise sensitivity and improve the stability of segmentation, an effective hybrid clustering algorithm combined with morphological operations is proposed for segmenting brain tumors in this paper. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: firstly, adaptive Wiener filtering is utilized for denoising, and morphological operations are used for removing nonbrain tissue, effectively reducing the method's sensitivity to noise. Secondly, K-means++ clustering is combined with the Gaussian kernel-based fuzzy C-means algorithm to segment images. This clustering not only improves the algorithm's stability, but also reduces the sensitivity of clustering parameters. Finally, the extracted tumor images are postprocessed using morphological operations and median filtering to obtain accurate representations of brain tumors. In addition, the proposed algorithm was compared with other current segmentation algorithms. Examining retinal image continuously plays an important role in determining human eye health; with any variation present in this image, it may be resulting from some disease. Therefore, there is a need for computer-aided scanning for retinal image to perform this task automatically and accurately. The fundamental step in this task is identification of the retina elements; optical disk localization is the most important one in this identification. Different optical disc localization algorithms have been suggested, such as an algorithm that would be proposed in this paper. The assumption is based on the fact that optical disc area has rich information, so its entropy value is more significant in this area. The suggested algorithm has recursive steps for testing the entropy of different patches in image; sliding window technique is used to get these patches in a specific way. The results of practical work were obtained using different common data set, which achieved good accuracy in trivial computation time. Cardiovascular diseases are reported as the leading cause of death around the world. Automatic segmentation of the left ventricle (LV) from magnetic resonance (MR) images is essential for an early diagnosis. An enhanced ResUnet is proposed in this paper to improve the performance of extracting LV endocardium and epicardium from MR images, improving the accuracy of the model by introducing a medium skip connection for the contracting path and a short skip connection for the residual unit. Also, a depth-wise separable convolution replaces the typical convolution operation to improve training efficiency. In the MICCAI 2009 LV segmentation challenge test dataset, the percentages of "good" contours, dice metric, and average perpendicular distance of endocardium (epicardium) are 99.12 % ± 2.29 % 100 % ± 0 % , 0.93 ± 0.02 0.96 ± 0.01 , and 1.60 ± 0.42 mm 1.37 ± 0.23 mm , respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model obtains promising performance and outperforms state-of-the-art methods. By incorporating these various skip connections, the segmentation accuracy of the model is significantly improved, while the depth-wise separable convolution also improves the model efficiency. In this paper, a new approach for Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has been addressed by extracting colour, gray, advanced texture, and shape features for input query images. Contour-based shape feature extraction methods and image moment extraction techniques are used to extract the shape features and shape invariant features. The informative features are selected from extracted features and combined colour, gray, texture, and shape features by using PSO. The target image has been retrieved for the given query image by training the random forest classifier. The proposed colour, gray, advanced texture, shape feature, and random forest classifier with optimized PSO (CGATSFRFOPSO) provide efficient retrieval of images in a large-scale database. The main objective of this research work is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the CBIR system by extracting the features like colour, gray, texture, and shape from database images and query images. These extracted features are processed in various levels like removing redundancy by optimal feature selection and fusion by optimal weighted linear combination. The Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is used for selecting the informative features from gray and colour and texture features. Among the different types of cancers, lung cancer is one of the widespread diseases which causes the highest number of deaths every year. The early detection of lung cancer is very essential for increasing the survival rate in patients. Although computed tomography (CT) is the preferred choice for lungs imaging, sometimes CT images may produce less tumor visibility regions and unconstructive rates in tumor portions. Hence, the development of an efficient segmentation technique is necessary. In this paper, water cycle bat algorithm- (WCBA-) based deformable model approach is proposed for lung tumor segmentation. In the preprocessing stage, a median filter is used to remove the noise from the input image and to segment the lung lobe regions, and Bayesian fuzzy clustering is applied. In the proposed method, deformable model is modified by the dictionary-based algorithm to segment the lung tumor accurately. The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease that has caused thousands of deaths and infected millions worldwide. Thus, various technologies that allow for the fast detection of COVID-19 infections with high accuracy can offer healthcare professionals much-needed help. This study is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art pretrained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) on the automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 from chest X-rays (CXRs). The dataset used in the experiments consists of 1200 CXR images from individuals with COVID-19, 1345 CXR images from individuals with viral pneumonia, and 1341 CXR images from healthy individuals. In this paper, the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) in the rapid and precise identification of COVID-19 from CXR images has been explored based on different pretrained deep learning algorithms and fine-tuned to maximise detection accuracy to identify the best algorithms. The results showed that deep learning with X-ray imaging is useful in collecting critical biological markers associated with COVID-19 infections. VGG16 and MobileNet obtained the highest accuracy of 98.28%. However, VGG16 outperformed all other models in COVID-19 detection with an accuracy, F1 score, precision, specificity, and sensitivity of 98.72%, 97.59%, 96.43%, 98.70%, and 98.78%, respectively. The outstanding performance of these pretrained models can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis. However, a larger dataset of COVID-19 X-ray images is required for a more accurate and reliable identification of COVID-19 infections when using deep transfer learning. Visual prosthesis applying electrical stimulation to restore visual function for the blind has promising prospects. However, due to the low resolution, limited visual field, and the low dynamic range of the visual perception, huge loss of information occurred when presenting daily scenes. The ability of object recognition in real-life scenarios is severely restricted for prosthetic users. To overcome the limitations, optimizing the visual information in the simulated prosthetic vision has been the focus of research. This paper proposes two image processing strategies based on a salient object detection technique. The two processing strategies enable the prosthetic implants to focus on the object of interest and suppress the background clutter. Psychophysical experiments show that techniques such as foreground zooming with background clutter removal and foreground edge detection with background reduction have positive impacts on the task of object recognition in simulated prosthetic vision. By using edge detection and zooming technique, the two processing strategies significantly improve the recognition accuracy of objects. We can conclude that the visual prosthesis using our proposed strategy can assist the blind to improve their ability to recognize objects. One of the major shortcomings of Hopfield neural network (HNN) is that the network may not always converge to a fixed point. HNN, predominantly, is limited to local optimization during training to achieve network stability. In this paper, the convergence problem is addressed using two approaches: (a) by sequencing the activation of a continuous modified HNN (MHNN) based on the geometric correlation of features within various image hyperplanes via pixel gradient vectors and (b) by regulating geometric pixel gradient vectors. These are achieved by regularizing proposed MHNNs under cohomology, which enables them to act as an unconventional filter for pixel spectral sequences. It shifts the focus to both local and global optimizations in order to strengthen feature correlations within each image subspace. As a result, it enhances edges, information content, contrast, and resolution. The proposed algorithm was tested on fifteen different medical images, where evaluations were made based on entropy, visual information fidelity (VIF), weighted peak signal-to-noise ratio (WPSNR), contrast, and homogeneity. The l 1 -norm regularization has attracted attention for image reconstruction in computed tomography. The l 0 -norm of the gradients of an image provides a measure of the sparsity of gradients of the image. In this paper, we present a new combined l 1 -norm and l 0 -norm regularization model for image reconstruction from limited projection data in computed tomography. We also propose an algorithm in the algebraic framework to solve the optimization effectively using the nonmonotone alternating direction algorithm with hard thresholding method. Bone age assessment (BAA) is an essential topic in the clinical practice of evaluating the biological maturity of children. Because the manual method is time-consuming and prone to observer variability, it is attractive to develop computer-aided and automated methods for BAA. In this paper, we present a fully automatic BAA method. To eliminate noise in a raw X-ray image, we start with using U-Net to precisely segment hand mask image from a raw X-ray image. Even though U-Net can perform the segmentation with high precision, it needs a bigger annotated dataset. To alleviate the annotation burden, we propose to use deep active learning (AL) to select unlabeled data samples with sufficient information intentionally. These samples are given to Oracle for annotation. After that, they are then used for subsequential training. In the beginning, only 300 data are manually annotated and then the improved U-Net within the AL framework can robustly segment all the 12611 images in RSNA dataset. The AL segmentation model achieved a Dice score at 0.95 in the annotated testing set. To optimize the learning process, we employ six off-the-shell deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with pretrained weights on ImageNet. We use them to extract features of preprocessed hand images with a transfer learning technique. In the end, a variety of ensemble regression algorithms are applied to perform BAA. Besides, we choose a specific CNN to extract features and explain why we select that CNN. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieved discrepancy between manual and predicted bone age of about 6.96 and 7.35 months for male and female cohorts, respectively, on the RSNA dataset. Brain tumors are a major health problem that affect the lives of many people. These tumors are classified as benign or cancerous. The latter can be fatal if not properly diagnosed and treated. Therefore, the diagnosis of brain tumors at the early stages of their development can significantly improve the chances of patient's full recovery after treatment. In addition to laboratory analyses, clinicians and surgeons extract information from medical images, recorded by various systems such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray, and computed tomography (CT). The extracted information is used to identify the essential characteristics of brain tumors (location, size, and type) in order to achieve an accurate diagnosis to determine the most appropriate treatment protocol. In this paper, we present an automated machine vision technique for the detection and localization of brain tumors in MRI images at their very early stages using a combination of k-means clustering, patch-based image processing, object counting, and tumor evaluation. The technique was tested on twenty real MRI images and was found to be capable of detecting multiple tumors in MRI images regardless of their intensity level variations, size, and location including those with very small sizes. Brain tumor segmentation is the process of separating the tumor from normal brain tissues; in clinical routine, it provides useful information for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, it is still a challenging task due to the irregular form and confusing boundaries of tumors. Tumor cells thermally represent a heat source; their temperature is high compared to normal brain cells. The main aim of the present paper is to demonstrate that thermal information of brain tumors can be used to reduce false positive and false negative results of segmentation performed in MRI images. Pennes bioheat equation was solved numerically using the finite difference method to simulate the temperature distribution in the brain; Gaussian noises of ±2% were added to the simulated temperatures. Canny edge detector was used to detect tumor contours from the calculated thermal map, as the calculated temperature showed a large gradient in tumor contours. The proposed method is compared to Chan–Vese based level set segmentation method applied to T1 contrast-enhanced and Flair MRI images of brains containing tumors with ground truth. The method is tested in four different phantom patients by considering different tumor volumes and locations and 50 synthetic patients taken from BRATS 2012 and BRATS 2013. The obtained results in all patients showed significant improvement using the proposed method compared to segmentation by level set method with an average of 0.8% of the tumor area and 2.48% of healthy tissue was differentiated using thermal images only. Three-dimensional (3D) biomedical image sets are often acquired with in-plane pixel spacings that are far less than the out-of-plane spacings between images. The resultant anisotropy, which can be detrimental in many applications, can be decreased using image interpolation. Optical flow and/or other registration-based interpolators have proven useful in such interpolation roles in the past. When acquired images are comprised of signals that describe the flow velocity of fluids, additional information is available to guide the interpolation process. Lung cancer is one of the major types of cancer in the world. Survival rate can be increased if the disease can be identified early. Posterior and anterior chest radiography and computerized tomography scans are the most used diagnosis techniques for detecting tumor from lungs. Posterior and anterior chest radiography requires less radiation dose and is available in most of the diagnostic centers and it costs less compared to the remaining diagnosis techniques. So PA chest radiography became the most commonly used technique for lung cancer detection. Because of superimposed anatomical structures present in the image, sometimes radiologists cannot find abnormalities from the image. Detection of epileptic seizures using an electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is a challenging task that requires a high level of skilled neurophysiologists. Therefore, computer-aided detection provides an asset to the neurophysiologist in interpreting the EEG. This paper introduces a novel approach to recognize and classify the epileptic seizure and seizure-free EEG signals automatically by an intelligent computer-aided method. Moreover, the prediction of the preictal phase of the epilepsy is proposed to assist the neurophysiologist in the clinic. The proposed method presents two perspectives for the EEG signal processing to detect and classify the seizures and seizure-free signals. The first perspectives consider the EEG signal as a nonlinear time series. A tunable Q-wavelet is applied to decompose the signal into smaller segments called subbands. Then a chaotic, statistical, and power spectrum features sets are extracted from each subband. The second perspectives process the EEG signal as an image; hence the gray-level co-occurrence matrix is determined from the image to obtain the textures of contrast, correlation, energy, and homogeneity. Due to a large number of features obtained, a feature selection algorithm based on firefly optimization was applied. The firefly optimization reduces the original set of features and generates a reduced compact set. A random forest classifier is trained for the classification and prediction of the seizures and seizure-free signals. Afterward, a dataset from the University of Bonn, Germany, is used for benchmarking and evaluation. A new blind integrity verification method for medical image is proposed in this paper. It is based on a new kind of image features, known as Krawtchouk moments, which we use to distinguish the original images from the modified ones. Basically, with our scheme, image integrity verification is accomplished by classifying images into the original and modified categories. Experiments conducted on medical images issued from different modalities verified the validity of the proposed method and demonstrated that it can be used to detect and discriminate image modifications of different types with high accuracy. We also compared the performance of our scheme with a state-of-the-art solution suggested for medical images—solution that is based on histogram statistical properties of reorganized block-based Tchebichef moments. Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors, and the objective grading is of great importance for treatment. This paper presents an automatic computer-aided diagnosis of gliomas that combines automatic segmentation and radiomics, which can improve the diagnostic ability. The MRI data containing 220 high-grade gliomas and 54 low-grade gliomas are used to evaluate our system. A multiscale 3D convolutional neural network is trained to segment whole tumor regions. A wide range of radiomic features including first-order features, shape features, and texture features is extracted. By using support vector machines with recursive feature elimination for feature selection, a CAD system that has an extreme gradient boosting classifier with a 5-fold cross-validation is constructed for the grading of gliomas. Our CAD system is highly effective for the grading of gliomas with an accuracy of 91.27%, a weighted macroprecision of 91.27%, a weighted macrorecall of 91.27%, and a weighted macro-F1 score of 90.64%. We present a deep learning-based method that corrects motion artifacts and thus accelerates data acquisition and reconstruction of magnetic resonance images. The novel model, the Motion Artifact Correction by Swin Network (MACS-Net), uses a Swin transformer layer as the fundamental block and the Unet architecture as the neural network backbone. We employ a hierarchical transformer with shifted windows to extract multiscale contextual features during encoding. A new dual upsampling technique is employed to enhance the spatial resolutions of feature maps in the Swin transformer-based decoder layer. A raw magnetic resonance imaging dataset is used for network training and testing; the data contain various motion artifacts with ground truth images of the same subjects. The results were compared to six state-of-the-art MRI image motion correction methods using two types of motions. When motions were brief (within 5 s), the method reduced the average normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) from 45.25% to 17.51%, increased the mean structural similarity index measure (SSIM) from 79.43% to 91.72%, and increased the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) from 18.24 to 26.57 dB. Similarly, when motions were extended from 5 to 10 s, our approach decreased the average NRMSE from 60.30% to 21.04%, improved the mean SSIM from 33.86% to 90.33%, and increased the PSNR from 15.64 to 24.99 dB. A challenge in accurately identifying and classifying left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is distinguishing it from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Fabry disease. The reliance on imaging techniques often requires the expertise of multiple specialists, including cardiologists, radiologists, and geneticists. This variability in the interpretation and classification of LVH leads to inconsistent diagnoses. LVH, HCM, and Fabry cardiomyopathy can be differentiated using T1 mapping on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, differentiation between HCM and Fabry cardiomyopathy using echocardiography or MRI cine images is challenging for cardiologists. Our proposed system named the MRI short-axis view left ventricular hypertrophy classifier (MSLVHC) is a high-accuracy standardized imaging classification model developed using AI and trained on MRI short-axis (SAX) view cine images to distinguish between HCM and Fabry disease. The model achieved impressive performance, with an F 1 -score of 0.846, an accuracy of 0.909, and an AUC of 0.914 when tested on the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) dataset. Additionally, a single-blinding study and external testing using data from the Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) demonstrated the reliability and effectiveness of the model, achieving an F 1 -score of 0.727, an accuracy of 0.806, and an AUC of 0.918, demonstrating the model's reliability and usefulness. Background. Ferumoxytol (Ferahame, AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Waltham, MA) is increasingly used off-label as an MR contrast agent due to its relaxivity and safety profiles. However, its potent T2 ∗ relaxivity limits achievable T1-weighted positive contrast and leads to artifacts in standard MRI protocols. Optimization of protocols for ferumoxytol deployment is necessary to realize its potential. Methods. We present first-in-human clinical results of the Quantitative Ultrashort Time-to-Echo Contrast Enhanced (QUTE-CE) MRA technique using the superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle agent ferumoxytol for vascular imaging of the head/brain in 15 subjects at 3.0T. The QUTE-CE MRA method was implemented on a 3T scanner using a stack-of-spirals 3D Ultrashort Time-to-Echo sequence. Time-of-flight MRA and standard TE T1-weighted (T1w) images were also collected. For comparison, gadolinium-enhanced blood pool phase images were obtained retrospectively from clinical practice. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and intraluminal signal heterogeneity (ISH) were assessed and compared across approaches with Welch's two-sided t -test. Results. Fifteen volunteers (54 ± 17 years old, 9 women) participated. QUTE-CE MRA provided high-contrast snapshots of the arterial and venous networks with lower intraluminal heterogeneity. QUTE-CE demonstrated significantly higher SNR (1707 ± 226), blood-tissue CNR (1447 ± 189), and lower ISH (0.091 ± 0.031) compared to ferumoxytol T1-weighted (551 ± 171 ; 319 ± 144 ; 0.186 ± 0.066 , respectively) and time-of-flight (343 ± 104 ; 269 ± 82 ; 0.190 ± 0.016 , respectively), with p < 0.001 in each comparison. The high CNR increased the depth of vessel visualization. Vessel lumina were captured with lower heterogeneity. Conclusion. Quantitative Ultrashort Time-to-Echo Contrast-Enhanced MR angiography provides approximately 5-fold superior contrast with fewer artifacts compared to other contrast-enhanced vascular imaging techniques using ferumoxytol or gadolinium, and to noncontrast time-of-flight MR angiography, for clinical vascular imaging. Background. MRI is an important tool for accurate detection and targeted biopsy of prostate lesions. However, the imaging appearances of some prostate cancers are similar to those of the surrounding normal tissue on MRI, which are referred to as MRI-invisible prostate cancers (MIPCas). The detection of MIPCas remains challenging and requires extensive systematic biopsy for identification. In this study, we developed a weakly supervised UNet (WSUNet) to detect MIPCas. Methods. The study included 777 patients (training set: 600; testing set: 177), all of them underwent comprehensive prostate biopsies using an MRI-ultrasound fusion system. MIPCas were identified in MRI based on the Gleason grade (≥7) from known systematic biopsy results. Results. The WSUNet model underwent validation through systematic biopsy in the testing set with an AUC of 0.764 (95% CI: 0.728-0.798). Furthermore, WSUNet exhibited a statistically significant precision improvement of 91.3% (p < 0.01) over conventional systematic biopsy methods in the testing set. This improvement resulted in a substantial 47.6% (p < 0.01) decrease in unnecessary biopsy needles, while maintaining the same number of positively identified cores as in the original systematic biopsy. Background. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are rapidly advancing in the field of medical imaging. This study is aimed at investigating the perception and knowledge of radiographers towards artificial intelligence. Methods. An online survey employing Google Forms consisting of 20 questions regarding the radiographers' perception of AI. The questionnaire was divided into two parts. The first part consisted of demographic information as well as whether the participants think AI should be part of medical training, their previous knowledge of the technologies used in AI, and whether they prefer to receive training on AI. The second part of the questionnaire consisted of two fields. The first one consisted of 16 questions regarding radiographers' perception of AI applications in radiology. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the effect of gender on the items of the questionnaire. Results. Familiarity with AI was low, with only 52 out of 100 respondents (52%) reporting good familiarity with AI. Many participants considered AI useful in the medical field (74%). The findings of the study demonstrate that nearly most of the participants (98%) believed that AI should be integrated into university education, with 87% of the respondents preferring to receive training on AI, with some already having prior knowledge of AI used in technologies. The logistic regression analysis indicated a significant association between male gender and experience within the range of 23-27 years with the degree of familiarity with AI technology, exhibiting respective odds ratios of 1.89 (COR = 1.89) and 1.87 (COR = 1.87). Conclusions. This study suggests that medical practices have a favorable attitude towards AI in the radiology field. Most participants surveyed believed that AI should be part of radiography education. Acute ischemic stroke represents a cerebrovascular disease, for which it is practical, albeit challenging to segment and differentiate infarct core from salvageable penumbra brain tissue. Ischemic stroke causes the variation of cerebral blood flow and heat generation due to metabolism. Therefore, the temperature is modified in the ischemic stroke region. In this paper, we incorporate acute ischemic stroke temperature profile to reinforce segmentation accuracy in MRI. Pennes bioheat equation was used to generate brain thermal images that may provide rich information regarding the temperature change in acute ischemic stroke lesions. The thermal images were generated by calculating the temperature of the brain with acute ischemic stroke. Then, U-Net was used in this paper for the segmentation of acute ischemic stroke. A dataset of 3192 images was created to train U-Net using k-fold crossvalidation. The training time was about 10 hours and 35 minutes in NVIDIA GPU. Next, the obtained trained model was compared with recent methods to analyze the effect of the ischemic stroke temperature profile in segmentation. The obtained results show that significant parts of acute ischemic stroke and background areas are segmented only in thermal images, which proves the importance of using thermal information to improve the segmentation outcomes in MRI diagnosis.

Iris has specific advantages, which can record all organ conditions, body construction, and psychological disorders. Traces related to the intensity or deviation of organs caused by the disease are recorded systematically and patterned on the iris and its surroundings. The pattern that appears on the iris can be recognized by using image processing techniques. Based on the pattern in the iris image, this paper aims to provide an alternative noninvasive method for the early detection of DM and HC. In this paper, we perform detection based on iris images for two diseases, DM and HC simultaneously, by developing the invariant Haralick feature on quantized images with 256, 128, 64, 32, and 16 gray levels. The feature extraction process does early detection based on iris images. Researchers and scientists have introduced many methods, one of which is the feature extraction of the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). Early detection based on the iris is done using the volumetric GLCM development, namely, 3D-GLCM. Based on 3D-GLCM, which is formed at a distance of d=1 and in the direction of 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°, 270°, and 315°, it is used to calculate Haralick features and develop Haralick features which are invariant to the number of quantization gray levels. The test results show that the invariant feature with a gray level of 256 has the best identification performance. In dataset I, the accuracy value is 97.92, precision is 96.88, and recall is 95.83, while in dataset II, the accuracy value is 95.83, precision is 89.69, and recall is 91.67. The identification of DM and HC trained on invariant features showed higher accuracy than the original features.

Intraoperative brain shift during neurosurgical procedures is a well-known phenomenon caused by gravity, tissue manipulation, tumor size, loss of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and use of medication. For the use of image-guided systems, this phenomenon greatly affects the accuracy of the guidance. During the last several decades, researchers have investigated how to overcome this problem. The purpose of this paper is to present a review of publications concerning different aspects of intraoperative brain shift especially in a tumor resection surgery such as intraoperative imaging systems, quantification, measurement, modeling, and registration techniques. Clinical experience of using intraoperative imaging modalities, details about registration, and modeling methods in connection with brain shift in tumor resection surgery are the focuses of this review. In total, 126 papers regarding this topic are analyzed in a comprehensive summary and are categorized according to fourteen criteria. The result of the categorization is presented in an interactive web tool. The consequences from the categorization and trends in the future are discussed at the end of this work. Superresolution, structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is an ideal modality for imaging live cells due to its relatively high speed and low photon-induced damage to the cells. The rate-limiting step in observing a superresolution image in SIM is often the reconstruction speed of the algorithm used to form a single image from as many as nine raw images. Reconstruction algorithms impose a significant computing burden due to an intricate workflow and a large number of often complex calculations to produce the final image. Further adding to the computing burden is that the code, even within the MATLAB environment, can be inefficiently written by microscopists who are noncomputer science researchers. In addition, they do not take into consideration the processing power of the graphics processing unit (GPU) of the computer. To address these issues, we present simple but efficient approaches to first revise MATLAB code, followed by conversion to GPU-optimized code. When combined with cost-effective, high-performance GPU-enabled computers, a 4- to 500-fold improvement in algorithm execution speed is observed as shown for the image denoising Hessian-SIM algorithm. Skin cancer is a significant health concern worldwide, and early and accurate diagnosis plays a crucial role in improving patient outcomes. In recent years, deep learning models have shown remarkable success in various computer vision tasks, including image classification. In this research study, we introduce an approach for skin cancer classification using vision transformer, a state-of-the-art deep learning architecture that has demonstrated exceptional performance in diverse image analysis tasks. The study utilizes the HAM10000 dataset; a publicly available dataset comprising 10,015 skin lesion images classified into two categories: benign (6705 images) and malignant (3310 images). This dataset consists of high-resolution images captured using dermatoscopes and carefully annotated by expert dermatologists. Preprocessing techniques, such as normalization and augmentation, are applied to enhance the robustness and generalization of the model. The vision transformer architecture is adapted to the skin cancer classification task. The model leverages the self-attention mechanism to capture intricate spatial dependencies and long-range dependencies within the images, enabling it to effectively learn relevant features for accurate classification. Segment Anything Model (SAM) is employed to segment the cancerous areas from the images; achieving an IOU of 96.01% and Dice coefficient of 98.14% and then various pretrained models are used for classification using vision transformer architecture. Extensive experiments and evaluations are conducted to assess the performance of our approach. The results demonstrate the superiority of the vision transformer model over traditional deep learning architectures in skin cancer classification in general with some exceptions. Upon experimenting on six different models, ViT-Google, ViT-MAE, ViT-ResNet50, ViT-VAN, ViT-BEiT, and ViT-DiT, we found out that the ML approach achieves 96.15% accuracy using Google's ViT patch-32 model with a low false negative ratio on the test dataset, showcasing its potential as an effective tool for aiding dermatologists in the diagnosis of skin cancer. Malaria is a vector borne disease widely occurring at equatorial region. Even after decades of campaigning of malaria control, still today it is high mortality causing disease due to improper and late diagnosis. To prevent number of people getting affected by malaria, the diagnosis should be in early stage and accurate. This paper presents an automatic method for diagnosis of malaria parasite in the blood images. Image processing techniques are used for diagnosis of malaria parasite and to detect their stages. The diagnosis of parasite stages is done using features like statistical features and textural features of malaria parasite in blood images. This paper gives a comparison of the textural based features individually used and used in group together. A well-established method for diagnosis of glaucoma is the examination of the optic nerve head based on fundus image as glaucomatous patients tend to have larger cup-to-disc ratios. The difficulty of optic segmentation is due to the fuzzy boundaries and peripapillary atrophy (PPA). In this paper a novel method for optic nerve head segmentation is proposed. It uses template matching to find the region of interest (ROI). The method of vessel erasing in the ROI is based on PDE inpainting which will make the boundary smoother. A novel optic disc segmentation approach using image texture is explored in this paper. A cluster method based on image texture is employed before the optic disc segmentation step to remove the edge noise such as cup boundary and vessels. We replace image force in the snake with image texture and the initial contour of the balloon snake is inside the optic disc to avoid the PPA. The experimental results show the superior performance of the proposed method when compared to some traditional segmentation approaches. Diabetic macular edema (DME) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are two common eye diseases. They are often undiagnosed or diagnosed late. This can result in permanent and irreversible vision loss. Therefore, early detection and treatment of these diseases can prevent vision loss, save money, and provide a better quality of life for individuals. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging is widely applied to identify eye diseases, including DME and AMD. In this work, we developed automatic deep learning-based methods to detect these pathologies using SD-OCT scans. Functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) is a technique used to study the functional connectedness of distinct regions of the brain by measuring the temporal correlation between their blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals. fcMRI is typically measured with the Pearson correlation (PC), which assumes that there is no lag between time series. Dynamic time warping (DTW) is an alternative measure of similarity between time series that is robust to such time lags. We used PC fcMRI data and DTW fcMRI data as predictors in machine learning models for classifying autism spectrum disorder (ASD). When combined with dimension reduction techniques, such as principal component analysis, functional connectivity estimated with DTW showed greater predictive ability than functional connectivity estimated with PC. Our results suggest that DTW fcMRI can be a suitable alternative measure that may be characterizing fcMRI in a different, but complementary, way to PC fcMRI that is worth continued investigation. In studying different variants of cross validation (CV), our results suggest that, when it is necessary to tune model hyperparameters and assess model performance at the same time, a K -fold CV nested within leave-one-out CV may be a competitive contender in terms of performance and computational speed, especially when sample size is not large. Accurate segmentation of breast masses in mammogram images is essential for early cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Several deep learning (DL) models have been proposed for whole mammogram segmentation and mass patch/crop segmentation. However, current DL models for breast mammogram mass segmentation face several limitations, including false positives (FPs), false negatives (FNs), and challenges with the end-to-end approach. This paper presents a novel two-stage end-to-end cascaded breast mass segmentation framework that incorporates a saliency map of potential mass regions to guide the DL models for breast mass segmentation. The first-stage segmentation model of the cascade framework is used to generate a saliency map to establish a coarse region of interest (ROI), effectively narrowing the focus to probable mass regions. The proposed presegmenter attention (PSA) blocks are introduced in the second-stage segmentation model to enable dynamic adaptation to the most informative regions within the mammogram images based on the generated saliency map. Comparative analysis of the Attention U-net model with and without the cascade framework is provided in terms of dice scores, precision, recall, FP rates (FPRs), and FN outcomes. Experimental results consistently demonstrate enhanced breast mass segmentation performance by the proposed cascade framework across all three datasets: INbreast, CSAW-S, and DMID. The cascade framework shows superior segmentation performance by improving the dice score by about 6% for the INbreast dataset, 3% for the CSAW-S dataset, and 2% for the DMID dataset. Similarly, the FN outcomes were reduced by 10% for the INbreast dataset, 19% for the CSAW-S dataset, and 4% for the DMID dataset. Moreover, the proposed cascade framework’s performance is validated with varying state-of-the-art segmentation models such as DeepLabV3+ and Swin transformer U-net. The presegmenter cascade framework has the potential to improve segmentation performance and mitigate FNs when integrated with any medical image segmentation framework, irrespective of the choice of the model.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a global disease characterized by poor treatment outcomes and high recurrence rates, significantly affecting patients’ quality of life. Due to its complex pathophysiology and diverse clinical presentations, CRS is categorized into various subtypes to facilitate more precise diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis prediction. Among these, CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is further divided into eosinophilic CRSwNP (eCRSwNP) and noneosinophilic CRSwNP (non-eCRSwNP). However, there is a lack of precise predictive diagnostic and treatment methods, making research into accurate diagnostic techniques for CRSwNP endotypes crucial for achieving precision medicine in CRSwNP. This paper proposes a method using multiangle sinus computed tomography (CT) images combined with artificial intelligence (AI) to predict CRSwNP endotypes, distinguishing between patients with eCRSwNP and non-eCRSwNP. The considered dataset comprises 22,265 CT images from 192 CRSwNP patients, including 13,203 images from non-eCRSwNP patients and 9,062 images from eCRSwNP patients. Test results from the network model demonstrate that multiangle images provide more useful information for the network, achieving an accuracy of 98.43%, precision of 98.1%, recall of 98.1%, specificity of 98.7%, and an AUC value of 0.984. Compared to the limited learning capacity of single-channel neural networks, our proposed multichannel feature adaptive fusion model captures multiscale spatial features, enhancing the model’s focus on crucial sinus information within the CT images to maximize detection accuracy. This deep learning-based diagnostic model for CRSwNP endotypes offers excellent classification performance, providing a noninvasive method for accurately predicting CRSwNP endotypes before treatment and paving the way for precision medicine in the new era of CRSwNP.

This paper extends our previous method for COVID-19 diagnosis, proposing an enhanced solution for detecting COVID-19 from computed tomography (CT) images using a lean transfer learning-based model. To decrease model misclassifications, two key steps of image processing were employed. Firstly, the uppermost and lowermost slices were removed, preserving sixty percent of each patient’s slices. Secondly, all slices underwent manual cropping to emphasize the lung areas. Subsequently, resized CT scans (224×224) were input into an Xception transfer learning model with a modified output. Both Xception’s architecture and pretrained weights were leveraged in the method. A big and rigorously annotated database of CT images was used to verify the method. The number of patients/subjects in the dataset is more than 5000, and the number and shape of the slices in each CT scan varies greatly. Verification was made both on the validation partition and on the test partition of unseen images. Results on the COV19-CT database showcased not only improvement from our previous solution and the baseline but also comparable performance to the highest-achieving methods on the same dataset. Further validation studies could explore the scalability and adaptability of the developed methodologies across diverse healthcare settings and patient populations. Additionally, investigating the integration of advanced image processing techniques, such as automated region of interest detection and segmentation algorithms, could enhance the efficiency and accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis.

Background. The deterministic fiber tracking method has the advantage of high computational efficiency and good repeatability, making it suitable for the noninvasive estimation of brain structural connectivity in clinical fields. To address the issue of the current classical deterministic method tending to deviate in the tracking direction in the region of crossing fiber region, in this paper, we propose an adaptive correction-based deterministic white matter fiber tracking method, named FTACTD. Methods. The proposed FTACTD method can accurately track white matter fibers by adaptively adjusting the deflection direction strategy based on the tensor matrix and the input fiber direction of adjacent voxels. The degree of correction direction changes adaptively according to the shape of the diffusion tensor, mimicking the actual tracking deflection angle and direction. Furthermore, both forward and reverse tracking techniques are employed to track the entire fiber. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated and quantified using both simulated and real brain datasets. Various indicators such as invalid bundles (IB), valid bundles (VB), invalid connections (IC), no connections (NC), and valid connections (VC) are utilized to assess the performance of the proposed method on simulated data and real diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data. Results. The experimental results of the simulated data show that the FTACTD method tracks outperform existing methods, achieving the highest number of VB with a total of 13 bundles. Additionally, it identifies the least number of incorrect fiber bundles, with only 32 bundles identified as wrong. Compared to the FACT method, the FTACTD method reduces the number of NC by 36.38%. In terms of VC, the FTACTD method surpasses even the best performing SD_Stream method among deterministic methods by 1.64%. Extensive in vivo experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in terms of tracking more accurate and complete fiber paths, resulting in improved continuity. Conclusion. The FTACTD method proposed in this study indicates superior tracking results and provides a methodological basis for the investigating, diagnosis, and treatment of brain disorders associated with white matter fiber deficits and abnormalities.

Inference of tumor and edema areas from brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data remains challenging owing to the complex structure of brain tumors, blurred boundaries, and external factors such as noise. To alleviate noise sensitivity and improve the stability of segmentation, an effective hybrid clustering algorithm combined with morphological operations is proposed for segmenting brain tumors in this paper. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: firstly, adaptive Wiener filtering is utilized for denoising, and morphological operations are used for removing nonbrain tissue, effectively reducing the method’s sensitivity to noise. Secondly, K-means++ clustering is combined with the Gaussian kernel-based fuzzy C-means algorithm to segment images. This clustering not only improves the algorithm’s stability, but also reduces the sensitivity of clustering parameters. Finally, the extracted tumor images are postprocessed using morphological operations and median filtering to obtain accurate representations of brain tumors. In addition, the proposed algorithm was compared with other current segmentation algorithms. The results show that the proposed algorithm performs better in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and recall.

Purpose. The treatment of skin lesions of various kinds is a common task in clinical routine. Apart from wound care, the assessment of treatment efficacy plays an important role. In this paper, we present a new approach to measure the skin lesion surface in two and three dimensions. Methods. For the 2D approach, a single photo containing a flexible paper ruler is taken. After semi-automatic segmentation of the lesion, evaluation is based on local scale estimation using the ruler. For the 3D approach, reconstruction is based on Structure from Motion. Roughly outlining the region of interest around the lesion is required for both methods. Results. The measurement evaluation was performed on 117 phantom images and five phantom videos for 2D and 3D approach, respectively. Background. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity and reduces the severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the long term. Less is known about the effects of bariatric surgery on liver fat, inflammation, and fibrosis during the early stages following bariatric surgery. Aims. This exploratory study utilises advanced imaging methods to investigate NAFLD and fibrosis changes during the early metabolic transitional period following bariatric surgery. Methods. Nine participants with morbid obesity underwent sleeve gastrectomy. Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) and magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) were performed at baseline, during the immediate (1 month), and late (6 months) postsurgery period. Liver fat was measured using proton density fat fraction (PDFF), disease activity using iron-correct T1 (cT1), and liver stiffness using MRE. Repeated measured ANOVA was used to assess longitudinal changes and Dunnett's method for multiple comparisons. Results. All participants (Age 45.1 ± 9.0 years, BMI 39.7 ± 5.3 kg / m 2 ) had elevated hepatic steatosis at baseline (PDFF >5%). In the immediate postsurgery period, PDFF decreased significantly from 14.1 ± 7.4 % to 8.9 ± 4.4 % (p = 0.016) and cT1 from 826.9 ± 80.6 ms to 768.4 ± 50.9 ms (p = 0.047). These improvements continued to the later postsurgery period. Bariatric surgery did not reduce liver stiffness measurements. Conclusion. We propose an enhanced method to accurately retrieve time-activity curves (TACs) of blood and tissue from dynamic 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) cardiac images of mice. The method is noninvasive and consists of using a constrained nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm (CNMF) applied to the matrix (A) containing the intensity values of the voxels of the left ventricle (LV) PET image. CNMF factorizes A into nonnegative matrices H and W , respectively, representing the physiological factors (blood and tissue) and their associated weights, by minimizing an extended cost function. We verified our method on 32 C57BL/6 mice, 14 of them with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). With CNMF, we could break down the mouse LV into myocardial and blood pool images. Their corresponding TACs were used in kinetic modeling to readily determine the [18F]FDG influx constant ( K i ) required to compute the myocardial metabolic rate of glucose. The calculated K i values using CNMF for the heart of control mice were in good agreement with those published in the literature. Significant differences in K i values for the heart of control and AMI mice were found using CNMF. The values of the elements of W agreed well with the LV structural changes induced by ligation of the left coronary artery. CNMF was compared with the recently published method based on robust unmixing of dynamic sequences using regions of interest (RUDUR). Examining retinal image continuously plays an important role in determining human eye health; with any variation present in this image, it may be resulting from some disease. Therefore, there is a need for computer-aided scanning for retinal image to perform this task automatically and accurately. The fundamental step in this task is identification of the retina elements; optical disk localization is the most important one in this identification. Different optical disc localization algorithms have been suggested, such as an algorithm that would be proposed in this paper. The assumption is based on the fact that optical disc area has rich information, so its entropy value is more significant in this area. The suggested algorithm has recursive steps for testing the entropy of different patches in image; sliding window technique is used to get these patches in a specific way. The results of practical work were obtained using different common data set, which achieved good accuracy in trivial computation time. Finally, this paper consists of four sections: a section for introduction containing the related works, a section for methodology and material, a section for practical work with results, and a section for conclusion.

Diffeomorphic demons can guarantee smooth and reversible deformation and avoid unreasonable deformation. However, the number of iterations needs to be set manually, and this greatly influences the registration result. In order to solve this problem, we proposed adaptive diffeomorphic multiresolution demons in this paper. We used an optimized framework with nonrigid registration and diffeomorphism strategy, designed a similarity energy function based on grey value, and stopped iterations adaptively. This method was tested by synthetic image and same modality medical image. Large deformation was simulated by rotational distortion and extrusion transform, medical image registration with large deformation was performed, and quantitative analyses were conducted using the registration evaluation indexes, and the influence of different driving forces and parameters on the registration result was analyzed. The registration results of same modality medical images were compared with those obtained using active demons, additive demons, and diffeomorphic demons. Quantitative analyses showed that the proposed method’s normalized cross-correlation coefficient and structural similarity were the highest and mean square error was the lowest. Medical image registration with large deformation could be performed successfully; evaluation indexes remained stable with an increase in deformation strength. Stomach bleeding is a kind of gastrointestinal disease which can be diagnosed noninvasively by wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). However, it requires much time for physicians to scan large amount of WCE images. Alternatively, computer-assisted bleeding localization systems are developed where color, edge, and intensity features are defined to distinguish lesions from normal tissues. This paper proposes a saliency-based localization system where three saliency maps are computed: phase congruency-based edge saliency map derived from Log-Gabor filter bands, intensity histogram-guided intensity saliency map, and red proportion-based saliency map. Fusing the three maps together, the proposed system can detect bleeding regions by thresholding the fused saliency map. Tracking cells and proteins’ phenotypic changes in deep suspensions is critical for the direct imaging of blood-related phenomena in in vitro replica of cardiovascular systems and blood-handling devices. This paper introduces fluorescence imaging techniques for space and time resolved detection of platelet activation, von Willebrand factor (VWF) conformational changes, and VWF-platelet interaction in deep suspensions. Labeled VWF, platelets, and VWF-platelet strands are suspended in deep cuvettes, illuminated, and imaged with a high-sensitivity EM-CCD camera, allowing detection using an exposure time of 1 ms. In-house postprocessing algorithms identify and track the moving signals. Recombinant VWF-eGFP (rVWF-eGFP) and VWF labeled with an FITC-conjugated polyclonal antibody are employed. Anti-P-Selectin FITC-conjugated antibodies and the calcium-sensitive probe Indo-1 are used to detect activated platelets. A positive correlation between the mean number of platelets detected per image and the percentage of activated platelets determined through flow cytometry is obtained, validating the technique. An increase in the number of rVWF-eGFP signals upon exposure to shear stress demonstrates the technique’s ability to detect breakup of self-aggregates. VWF globular and unfolded conformations and self-aggregation are also observed. The ability to track the size and shape of VWF-platelet strands in space and time provides means to detect pro- and antithrombotic processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a multitasking electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system designed to improve the flexibility and durability of an existing EIT system. The ability of the present EIT system to detect, locate, and reshape objects was evaluated by four different experiments. The results of the study show that the system can detect and locate an object with a diameter as small as 1.5 mm in a testing tank with a diameter of 134 mm. Moreover, the results demonstrate the ability of the current system to reconstruct an image of several dielectric object shapes. Based on the results of the experiments, the programmable EIT system can adapt the EIT system for different applications without the need to implement a new EIT system, which may help to save time and cost. The setup for all the experiments consisted of a testing tank with an attached 16-electrode array made of titanium alloy grade 2. This paper describes a method based on an automatic segmentation process to coregister carpal bones of the same patient imaged at different time points. A rigid registration was chosen to avoid artificial bone deformations and to allow finding eventual differences in the bone shape due to erosion, disease regression, or other eventual pathological signs. The actual registration step is performed on the basis of principal inertial axes of each carpal bone volume, as estimated from the inertia matrix. In contrast to already published approaches, the proposed method suggests splitting the 3D rotation into successive rotations about one axis at a time (the so-called basic or elemental rotations). In such a way, singularity and ambiguity drawbacks affecting other classical methods, for instance, the Euler angles method, are addressed. The proposed method was quantitatively evaluated using a set of real magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences acquired at two different times from healthy wrists and by choosing a direct volumetric comparison as a cost function. Both the segmentation and registration steps are not based on a priori models, and they are therefore able to obtain good results even in pathological cases, as proven by the visual evaluation of actual pathological cases.
