Despite the fact that a number of research efforts in the area of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) exist, there is a lack of really practical IWSN implementations, deployments, and in-field applications. This paper presents the design and implementation of an IWSN for welder machine systems, called WirelessCAN which is based on WirelessHART to replace wired CAN fieldbus. Although the implementation and challenges are application-specific, we believe that the problems we encountered will be faced by many IWSN designers. In this paper, selected challenges exposed in our implementation and the potential solutions are introduced, which have not been addressed previously. Specifically, communication resource constraint, real-time rescheduling, integrated knowledge for IWSN applications, centralized control architecture, reliable and immediate message delivery for human and equipment safety, and differential QoS requirements are discussed in detail and in depth. Due to the limited energy of wireless sensor nodes, the energy efficiency of data collection is a key issue in wireless sensor network (WSN). Dynamic clustering is a scalable and energy efficient solution for data collection in WSN. However, it suffers from the imbalanced energy consumption in the intercluster communication. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a distributed and adaptive routing protocol for cluster-based wireless sensor networks (DARC). In DARC, an adaptive energy threshold is proposed for the cluster head to control its intercluster routing mode, and a tunable cost function is designed for relay selection. Simulation results prove that DARC effectively balances the energy consumption in the intercluster communication and hence improves the energy efficiency and prolongs the network lifetime. With the continuously increasing number of vehicles, particularly in cities, there are more and more abnormal traffic events occurring on road, which easily cause road congestion. In vehicular sensor networks (VSNs), with the intervehicle cooperative communication, vehicle nodes can detect the abnormal traffic events and disseminate the related information to the interesting vehicles or persons. This paper gives out a survey of the abnormal traffic information detection and transmission mechanisms in VSNs. Firstly, we overview the origin, characteristic, and application of VSNs. Meanwhile, the definition and features of traffic abnormal information are also introduced and presented. Then, we put more energy on elaborating the existing information detection and transmission mechanisms based on VSNs. Finally, the challenges and problems are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
