The ever-increasing penetration of wind power integration into a power system can produce significant impacts on the operation of an interconnected power system. As the major energy conversion technology for large wind turbines, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) will play an important role in future power systems. Hence, the impacts of the DFIG on the low-frequency oscillations of interconnected power systems have become an important issue with extensive concerns. This paper examines the impacts of several factors, including the DFIG transmission distance, tie-line power of the interconnected system, DFIG capacity, with/without a power system stabilizer (PSS), on the low frequency oscillation characteristic of an interconnected power system using both eigenvalue analysis and dynamic simulations. To investigate the effects of these factors on the interarea oscillation mode, case studies are carried out on two two-area interconnected power systems, and some conclusions are obtained. This paper performs a probabilistic load flow (PLF) analysis of photovoltaic (PV) generation system with electric vehicles (EVs). The randomness of power generated by PV and the randomness charging profiles of EVs is modeled. Different EV charging behaviors are involved, one is EV charging start time distribution driving by time of use (TOU) electricity tariff, the other is that EV charging power is dispatched for minimizing the minimum equivalent load. The well-established 3 point estimation method (3PEM) is employed to compute load flow variables’ statistic moments by deterministic load flow at 3 points selected from each random variable. Application of the PLF model proposed in this paper, in PG&E 69 bus distribution system with daily meteorological data of a city in China, is demonstrated. Abstract: To ensure the small-signal stability of a power system, power system stabilizers (PSSs) are extensively applied for damping low frequency power oscillations through modulating the excitation supplied to synchronous machines, and increasing interest has been focused on developing different PSS schemes to tackle the threat of damping oscillations to power system stability. This paper examines four different PSS models and investigates their performances on damping power system dynamics using both small-signal eigenvalue analysis and large-signal dynamic simulations. The four kinds of PSSs examined include the Conventional PSS (CPSS), Single Neuron based PSS (SNPSS), Adaptive PSS (APSS) and Multi-band PSS (MBPSS). A steep descent parameter optimization algorithm is employed to seek the optimal PSS design parameters. To evaluate the effects of these PSSs on improving power system dynamic behaviors, case studies are carried out on an 8-unit 24-bus power system through both small-signal eigenvalue analysis and large-signal time-domain simulations. Abstract: Traditional analytic models for power system fault diagnosis are usually formulated as an unconstrained 0–1 integer programming problem. The key issue of the models is to seek the fault hypothesis that minimizes the discrepancy between the actual and the expected states of the concerned protective relays and circuit breakers. The temporal information of alarm messages has not been well utilized in these methods, and as a result, the diagnosis results may be not unique and hence indefinite, especially when complicated and multiple faults occur. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a novel analytic model employing the temporal information of alarm messages along with the concept of related path. The temporal relationship among the actions of protective relays and circuit breakers, and the different protection configurations in a modern power system can be reasonably represented by the developed model, and therefore, the diagnosed results will be more definite under different circumstances of faults. The distributed radial basis function neural networks (RBF NN) can effectively solve fault section estimation (FSE) in large-scale power networks. However, when network expands or topology changes, the RBF NN has to be totally retrained, which is time-consuming and becomes a bottleneck in its applications. In this paper, functional equivalence between a RBF NN and a companion fuzzy system (CFS) is built up throughout the neural network training process, therefore the black-box-like knowledge in a RBF NN will be rule-based and transparent in its CFS. Through useful knowledge extraction from the old CFS and insertion back to the new CFS piece by piece, the RBF NN retraining issue under network expansion and topology change can be solved effectively and efficiently. In the paper, the conditions for equivalence of a RBF NN and its CFS are illustrated. The novel procedure for RBF NN retraining under network expansion and topology change is presented. The corresponding FSE system has been implemented and tested in the IEEE 118-bus power system. The simulation results show that the suggested approach for RBF NN retraining works successfully and efficiently in the case of power network expansion and topology change, which significantly improves the application potential of RBF NN in FSE of practical power systems. In this paper, the problem of building optimally coordinated bidding strategies for competitive suppliers in day-ahead energy and spinning reserve markets is addressed. It is assumed that each supplier bids 24 linear energy supply functions and 24 linear spinning reserve supply functions, one for each hour, into the energy and spinning reserve markets, respectively, and each market is cleared separately and simultaneously for all the 24 delivery hours. Each supplier makes decisions on unit commitment and chooses the coefficients in the linear energy and spinning reserve supply functions to maximise total benefits, subject to expectations about how rival suppliers will bid in both markets. Two different bidding schemes have been suggested for each hour, and based on them an overall coordinated bidding strategy in the day-ahead energy and spinning reserve market is then developed. Stochastic optimisation models are first developed to describe these two different bidding schemes and a genetic algorithm (GA) is then used to build the optimally coordinated bidding strategies for each scheme and to develop an overall bidding strategy for the day-ahead energy and spinning reserve markets. Finding an optimal black-start scheme plays an important role in speeding up the restoration procedure of a power system after a blackout or a local outage. In a practical black-start decision-making procedure, uncertainties are inevitable. Some factors such as index values and indexes’ weights can be better described as uncertain interval values. So far, the black-start decision-making problem with uncertainties has not yet been systematically investigated. Given this background, a new approach for black-start decision-making based on interval values is developed. First, a decision-making matrix with interval values is normalized by using the error propagation theory. Then, a linear goal programming model is developed to seek the ideal vector of index weights and the evaluation values of all candidate black-start schemes can be obtained. A risk attitude factor based method is presented to sort the schemes. Finally, a sample example is served for demonstrating the essential feature of the proposed method, and comparisons with three existing methods are also carried out. Simulation and comparison results show that the proposed method could not only take different kinds of uncertainties into account, but also overcome several shortcomings of the existing methods. The fuzzy Petri net is a promising and efficient approach that can tackle the complexities of power system fault diagnosis. In this work, the temporal constraint between event occurrences in power systems is investigated. Then, it is introduced to a fuzzy Petri net (FPN) for fault diagnosis. The temporal attributes are assigned to the propositions in the Petri net, so that temporal information can be taken into account, which makes the true hypothesis distinguishable from the false ones. The modified matrix execution algorithm can enhance computational efficiency, with a “weighted average” operation included to improve the fault-tolerance. The developed model possesses a modular structure, which is easy to adapt to topology changes, and to accommodate modern protection schemes. A preliminary evaluation of the operating performance of protective devices is also carried out after fault section identification. The testing results on the IEEE 14-bus power system and Zhejiang provincial power system in China demonstrate that the developed model is correct and efficient. Compared with three existing fault diagnosis methods, the proposed one has stronger fault-tolerance with lower computational cost, and is suitable for on-line fault diagnosis in large-scale power systems. Fast restoration of critical loads and non-black-start generators can significantly reduce the economic losses caused by power system blackouts. In a parallel power system restoration scenario, the sectionalization of restoration subsystems plays a very important role in determining the pickup of critical loads before synchronization. Most existing research mainly focuses on the startup of non-black-start generators. The restoration of critical loads, especially the loads with cold load characteristics, has not yet been addressed in optimizing the subsystem divisions. As a result, sectionalized restoration subsystems cannot achieve the best coordination between the pickup of loads and the ramping of generators. In order to generate sectionalizing strategies considering the pickup of critical loads in parallel power system restoration scenarios, an optimization model considering power system constraints, the characteristics of the cold load pickup and the features of generator startup is proposed in this paper. A bi-level programming approach is employed to solve the proposed sectionalizing model. In the upper level the optimal sectionalizing problem for the restoration subsystems is addressed, while in the lower level the objective is to minimize the outage durations of critical loads. The proposed sectionalizing model has been validated by the New-England 39-bus system and the IEEE 118-bus system. Further comparisons with some existing methods are carried out as well. The network reconfiguration is an important stage of restoring a power system after a complete blackout or a local outage. Reasonable planning of the network reconfiguration procedure is essential for rapidly restoring the power system concerned. An approach for evaluating the importance of a line is first proposed based on the line contraction concept. Then, the interpretative structural modeling (ISM) is employed to analyze the relationship among the factors having impacts on the network reconfiguration. The security and speediness of restoring generating units are considered with priority, and a method is next proposed to select the generating unit to be restored by maximizing the restoration benefit with both the generation capacity of the restored generating unit and the importance of the line in the restoration path considered. Both the start-up sequence of generating units and the related restoration paths are optimized together in the proposed method, and in this way the shortcomings of separately solving these two issues in the existing methods are avoided. Abstract: Power system restoration after a large area outage involves many factors, and the procedure is usually very complicated. A decision-making support system could then be developed so as to find the optimal black-start strategy. In order to evaluate candidate black-start strategies, some indices, usually both qualitative and quantitative, are employed. However, it may not be possible to directly synthesize these indices, and different extents of interactions may exist among these indices. In the existing black-start decision-making methods, qualitative and quantitative indices cannot be well synthesized, and the interactions among different indices are not taken into account. The vague set, an extended version of the well-developed fuzzy set, could be employed to deal with decision-making problems with interacting attributes. Given this background, the vague set is first employed in this work to represent the indices for facilitating the comparisons among them. Then, a concept of the vague-valued fuzzy measure is presented, and on that basis a mathematical model for black-start decision-making developed. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed method could deal with the interactions among indices and more reasonably represent the fuzzy information. Abstract: Deregulation in the electricity supply industry has brought many new challenges to the problem of reactive power planning. Although the problem has been extensively studied, available standard optimization models and methods do not offer good solutions to this problem, especially in a competitive electricity market environment where many factors are uncertain. Given this background, a novel method for reactive power planning based on chance constrained programming is presented in this paper, with uncertain factors taken into account. A stochastic optimization model is first formulated under the presumption that the generator outputs and load demands can be modeled as specified probability distributions. A method is then presented for solving the optimization problem using the Monte Carlo simulation method and genetic algorithm. In actual electricity market, which operates repeatedly on the basis of one hour or half hour, each firm might learn or estimate other competitors'' strategic behaviors from available historical market operation data, and rationally aims at its maximum profit in the repeated biddings. A conjectural variation based learning method is proposed in this paper for generation firm to improve its strategic bidding performance. In the method, each firm learns and dynamically regulates its conjecture upon the reactions of its rivals to its bidding according to available information published in the electricity market, and then makes its optimal generation decision based on the updated conjectural variation of its rivals. Through such learning process, the equilibrium reached in the market is proven a Nash equilibrium. Motivation of generation firm to learn in the changing market environment and consequence of learning behavior in the market are also discussed through computer tests. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Fault section estimation is of great importance to the restoration of power systems. Many techniques have been used to solve this problem. In this paper, the application of radial basis function neural network (RBF NN) to fault section estimation is addressed. The orthogonal least square (OLS) algorithm has been extended to optimize the number of neurons in hidden layer and the connection weights of RBF NN. A classical back-propagation neural network (BP NN) has been developed to solve the same problem for comparison. Computer test is conducted on a four-bus test system and the test results show that the RBF NN is quite effective and superior to BP NN in fault section estimation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Striving to develop renewable energy generation (REG) has become a global trend. Due to high carbon emissions, fossil-fueled generation units (FFGUs) in an electrical energy market such as the day-ahead and real-time electricity markets are facing unprecedented constraints. From the perspective of FFGUs, an effective way is to change their market roles from energy suppliers with high environmental costs to secure and reliable frequency regulation service providers. To help FFGUs successfully complete the transition, a bi-level optimization model for the joint energy and regulation service market is proposed in this paper. Different from existing joint markets, both the environmental cost of FFGUs and the frequency regulation service (FRS) cost of REG units are considered in this research for market operators to determine the scheduling priorities of submitted bids from generation units. In the frequency regulation service market model, a dynamic approach to determining the FRS demand is applied, which not only incentivizes REG units to initiatively manage their outputs, but also derives the price signals through the equilibrium of the FRS demand and supply to ensure the revenue of FFGUs in the FRS market. Meanwhile, the decision-making model of the FFGUs under the proposed market mechanism is also presented. Finally, extensive numerical experiments demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the mechanism. The rapid growth of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and demand response in modern power grids calls for decentralized electricity trading mechanisms to effectively induce and coordinate responses from massive DERs and load entities. This paper proposes a fully decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) distribution electricity trading mechanism backboned by a modified version of Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Comparing with the state-of-the-art P2P electricity markets, the proposed electricity trading mechanism comprehensively incorporates power network constraints formulated by an alternating current power flow model. In the proposed method, nodal voltages are designed as the only public variables shared among participants. Privacy of each participant is thus sufficiently preserved without exposing the bid data to the others. Meanwhile, the proposed P2P method can also ensure the global optimality of social welfare in electricity transactions. Comprehensive case studies are carried out using the IEEE 33-node distribution system to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of proposed P2P electricity trading mechanism. The results indicate that the proposed model can efficiently integrates network constraints in the market clearing process while maintaining computational performance, ensuring stable convergence regardless of distribution system congestion. The proposed P2P electricity market can achieve global maximization of social welfare, with a relative difference of no more than 5.0% compared to the conventional centralized market. Even in worst-case scenarios, the relative difference remains within 7.32%. • A novel generator start-up sequence optimization strategy is proposed in this work, taking the integration time of wind-solar hybrid systems into account. • The proposed model requires fewer variables compared with other models, therefore the computational efficiency can be greatly improved. • The confidence gap decision theory based generator start-up sequence strategy is proposed to address the generation uncertainty of wind-solar hybrid systems. • Better generator start-up sequence solutions with higher computational efficiency and less conservatism can be attained by employing the proposed strategy. A reasonable start-up sequence of generators considering renewable energy generation integration can effectively improve the restoration efficiency of the power system concerned. The restoration strategy of generators is time-sensitive, however, the computation procedure of existing methods is not fast enough to meet the requirements of practical applications. In this paper, the generator start-up sequence optimization (GSSO) problem is addressed with the integration of wind-solar hybrid systems (WSSs) considered in bulk power systems. Specifically, a deterministic model for GSSO is formulated to maximize the total generation capability during the restoration procedure, in which fewer auxiliary variables are required to promote the computational efficiency. On this basis, in order to deal with the inherent and significant uncertainties of WSSs, a confidence gap decision theory (CGDT) based approach is proposed combining the advantages of stochastic optimization and the information gap decision theory based method while considering the worst-case realization of unknown probability distributions, so that a chance-constrained robust generator start-up solution is thereby attained. Moreover, the formulated CGDT based model is transformed into a mixed integer linear programming problem. • A load restoration scheme is proposed to coordinate the transmission, distribution, and gas systems. • The coordinated load restoration is achieved in a distributed manner to respect the information privacies. • The line-packs caused by slow gas slow dynamics is exploited to assist in load restoration. • An efficient algorithm is proposed to solve the distributed load restoration scheme with excellent calculation performance. Recent electricity systems have witnessed many power outage events, and the interrupted loads must be restored as soon as possible to reduce the enormous outage losses. However, the ever-increasing interdependencies of the transmission, distribution, and gas systems cause the restoration behaviors of a system to inevitably influence the others, which brings about new impacts on the load restoration decisions. Moreover, the different velocities of power and gas flows cause additional complexities in making load restoration decisions for the whole system. To address these problems, this paper proposes a new load restoration scheme coordinating transmission, distribution, and gas systems. Firstly, to respect the information privacy of individual energy subsystems, a distributed load restoration coordination structure is proposed with the interactions of different energy systems and corresponding load restoration models considering pipeline gas storage capacity caused by slow gas flow dynamics. Based on the distributed restoration coordination structure and considering that discrete variables in load restoration models hinder the efficient calculation, a projection function-based adaptive alternating direction method of multipliers is then proposed with iterative relaxation and projection of discrete variables. Finally, simulation results in the T118-D33-N56 test system and a real-world system in China demonstrate that coordination of transmission, distribution, and gas systems and considering pipeline gas storage capacity can shorten the load restoration time. With the implementation of smart distribution technology, the real-time pricing scheme has emerged as a critical subject for energy management systems. In this paper, we propose a bilevel optimization model that computes a transactive price signal representing the impact of wholesale market locational marginal prices on retail customers' demand response participation. At the upper level of the proposed model, the electricity utility company (EUC) determines the optimal energy procurement and transactive price signals for demand response aggregator (DRA). At the lower level, each DRA adjusts its electricity consumption profile using the transactive price signals. The adjusted DRA consumption profile is fed back to the upper level problem as the iteration continues. The interactions among DRAs are simulated as a non-cooperative game. The proposed model is transformed into a mixed-integer quadratically constrained programming through using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. The generalized disjunctive programming is introduced when linearizing the bilinear terms in KKT conditions by applying piecewise McCormick relaxation and big-M disjunctive constraints.
