Knowledge of wave propagation across rock joints is necessary for understanding distinctions between wave attenuation and lithology. Whenever a propagating seismic wave strikes a rock joint at an angle not normal to the joint, wave transformation occurs. The rock joints existing in the field are not oriented in the condition for normal incidence of the wave; hence, wave transformations are very common. In this paper, transformations of P and Sv waves have been modeled numerically with the help of a distinct element method. Validation of the numerical model has been carried out by comparing the wave velocities obtained from bender/extender elements. The dependence of the transformation of obliquely striking waves on the frequency of incident waves and stiffness of the joint has been studied. The velocities of propagating waves and the ratios of stress amplitudes of propagating waves with respect to the incident wave have been obtained and compared for all the possible angles of incidence. The wave velocities and amplitudes of propagating stress waves are found to be dependent on the angle of incidence of the waves at the rock joint. Geocells are three-dimensional expandable panels with a wide range of applications in geotechnical engineering. A geocell is made up of many internally connected single cells. The current study discusses the joint strength and the wall deformation characteristics of a single cell when it is subjected to uniaxial compression. The study helps to understand the causes for the failure of the single cell in a cellular confinement system. Experimental studies were conducted on single cells with cell pockets filled up with three different infill materials, namely silty clay, sand, and the aggregates. The results of the experimental study revealed that the deformation of the geocell wall decreases with the increase in the friction angle of the infill material. Experimental results were also validated using numerical simulations carried out using Lagrangian analysis software. The experiment and the numerical results were found to be in good agreement with each other. A simple analytical model based on the theory of thin cylinders is also proposed to calculate the accumulated strain of the geocell wall. This model operates under a simple elastic solution framework. The proposed model slightly overestimates the strains as compared with experimental and numerical values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A detailed study on the postliquefaction undrained shear behavior of sand-silt mixtures at constant void ratios is presented in this article. The influence of different parameters such as density, amplitude of cyclic shear stress, and drainage conditions on the postliquefaction undrained response of sand-silt mixtures has been investigated, in addition to the effect of fines content. The results showed that the limiting silt content plays a vital role in the strength of the soil under both cyclic and monotonic shear loading. Both the liquefaction resistance and postliquefaction shear strength of the soils are found to decrease with an increase in the fines content until the limiting silt content is reached. However, further increase in the silt content beyond the limiting silt content increases the liquefaction resistance as well as the postliquefaction shear strength of the soils. It is also observed that these variations on the liquefaction and postliquefaction resistance of soils are closely related to the variations in relative density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the problem of site characterization is treated as a task of function approximation of the large existing data from standard penetration tests (SPTs) in three-dimensional subsurface of Bangalore, India. More than 2,700 field SPT values (N) has been collected from 766 boreholes spread over an area of 220-km2 area in Bangalore, India. To get N corrected value (Nc), N values have been corrected for different parameters such as overburden stress, size of borehole, type of sampler, length of connected rod. In three-dimensional analysis, the function Nc=Nc(X,Y,Z), where X, Y, and Z are the coordinates of a point corresponds to Nc value, is to be approximated with which Nc value at any half-space point in Bangalore, India can be determined. An attempt has been made to develop artificial neural network (ANN) model using multilayer perceptrons that are trained with Levenberg-Marquardt back-propagation algorithm. Also, a geostatistical model based on ordinary kriging technique has been adopted. The knowledge of the semivariogram of the Nc values is used in the ordinary kriging method to predict the Nc values at any point in the subsurface of Bangalore, India where field measurements are not available. The results obtained show that ANN model is fairly accurate in predicting Nc values. In case of ordinary kriging, a new type of cross-validation analysis shows that it is a robust model for prediction of Nc values. A comparison between the ANN and geostatistical model demonstrates that the ANN model is superior to Geostatistical model in predicting Nc values in the subsurface of Bangalore, India. A simple practical equivalent continuum numerical model for simulating the behavior of jointed rock mass has been extended to three-dimensional using FLAC3D. This model estimates the properties of jointed rock mass from the properties of intact rock and a joint factor (Jf), which is the integration of the properties of joints to take care of the effects of frequency, orientation, and strength of joint. A new FISH function has been written in FLAC3D specifically for modeling jointed rocks using the Duncan and Chang hyperbolic model. This model has been validated first with simple element tests at different confining pressures for different rocks with different joint configurations. Explicit modeling of the joints has also been done in element tests and results obtained compare well with the results of equivalent continuum model and also with experimental results. Further, this has been applied for a case study of a large underground power house cavern in the Himalayas. This paper deals with the statistical analysis of the uniaxial compressive strength and of the elastic modulus of jointed rock masses under different confining pressures. Properties of the rock masses with different joint fabric, with and without gouge have been considered in the analysis. A large amount of experimental data of jointed rock masses from the literature has been compiled and used for this statistical analysis. The uniaxial compressive strength of a rock mass has been represented in a nondimensional form as the ratio of the compressive strength of the jointed rock to the intact rock. In the case of the elastic modulus, the ratio of elastic modulus of jointed rock to that of intact rock at different confining pressures is used in the analysis. The effect of the joints in the rock mass is taken into account by a joint factor. The joint factor is defined as a function of joint frequency, joint orientation, and joint strength. Several empirical relationships between the strength and deformation properties of jointed rock and the joint factor have been arrived at via statistical analysis of the experimental data. A comparative study of these relationships is presented. The effect of confining pressure on the elastic modulus of the jointed rock mass is also considered in the analysis. These empirical relationships are incorporated in a nonlinear FEM code to carryout the equivalent continuum analysis of jointed rock masses. The method presented in this paper recognizes that the jointed rock mass will act both as an elastic material and a discontinuous mass.
