In pursuit of energy transition objectives, Algeria is increasingly focusing on the production and utilization of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen. While hydrogen has predominantly been used in the chemical and refining industries, it holds promise for decarbonizing specific industrial sectors, enabling electricity storage, and powering the transport sector. However, several barriers must be overcome before hydrogen technologies can be widely deployed. Numerous countries, with Japan at the forefront, are heavily investing in this burgeoning market, anticipating the creation of thousands of new jobs. Hydrogen offers Algeria significant potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and substantial economic benefits. In response, the Algerian government has prioritized energy transition to new and renewable sources as part of its economic recovery plan, aiming for "green" growth through innovative and digital energy technologies. This paper's primary objective is to provide a techno-economic foundation for guiding public policy development, identifying promising opportunities for green hydrogen within Algeria's energy transition context, and outlining sustainable pathways for pilot projects that promote hydrogen adoption within the Algerian society. Additionally, this paper will explore the latest advancements in hydrogen research, technology, and applications relevant to the Algeria's energy transition. The Algerian energy minister, has reaffirmed his desire to "invest in hydrogen", an energy source presented as one of the solutions to the climate crisis. In October 2021, Algeria launched a hydrogen plan worth several billion dinars, including 100 million for research, to enable the country to develop "green" hydrogen, i.e. produced without fossil fuels. • Algeria's energy transition mission focuses on promoting energy transition, innovation, and efficiency. • The Algerian Strategy on Green Hydrogen 2050 intends to establish a supportive framework for hydrogen sector development. • Algeria has set ambitious targets: reducing its GHG emissions by 2030 and lowering its consumption of petroleum products. • Algeria export between 30 and 40 TWh by 2040 of gaseous green hydrogen, liquefied, and derived. With the growing demand for green technologies, hydrogen energy devices, such as Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells and water electrolysers, have received accelerated developments. However, the materials and manufacturing cost of these technologies are still relatively expensive which impedes their widespread commercialization. Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly termed 3D Printing (3DP), with its advanced capabilities, could be a potential pathway to solve the fabrication challenges of PEM parts. Herein, in this paper, the research studies on the novel AM fabrication methods of PEM components are thoroughly reviewed and analysed. The key performance properties, such as corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement resistance, of the additively manufactured materials in the PEM working environment are discussed to emphasise their reliability for the PEM systems. Additionally, the major challenges and required future developments of AM technologies to unlock their full potential for PEM fabrication are identified. Renewable hydrogen is considered as one of the key technologies that may be needed to fully decarbonise our economies, providing the high-temperature heat, fuels and feedstock that might not be possible to electrify. Several pilot projects are underway, and some assessments of the economics of green hydrogen have been published. However, most of them have assessed the costs of producing renewable hydrogen in large-scale, grid-connected units. Another option, pointed by many as a robust strategy in the early stages, is to produce hydrogen locally, in "hydrogen valleys", to serve industrial demand. In this paper, the economics of the different technical configurations and strategies that might be used for this decentralised, variable-demand option are analysed, accounting for the impact that a non-constant operation may cause on the operational efficiency of electrolysers, and for the potential benefits of local hydrogen storage. Our results show that when hydrogen demand is variable, production costs are higher compared to the constant demand case, due to the higher electrolyser size required. Electricity price optimization plus hydrogen storage can be a valuable option in some cases, although the cost benefit is negligible (about 1%) unless price volatility in the market increases with higher RES shares, or investment costs decrease significantly. Sourcing electricity exclusively from a dedicated renewable power plant can only become competitive if electricity market prices rise as observed recently or triggered by increasing CO 2 prices. • Different production strategies are compared to minimise H 2 production costs. • Faraday efficiency increases costs for variable electricity generation. • Electricity price optimization is best for H2 valleys, although compression costs may change this. • Direct H 2 production from renewable plants is not competitive with current prices. Significant efforts are being made to produce biofuels to replace fossil fuels and address the issues caused by global climate change. Due to its potential better conversion efficiency to useable power, decreased emission of pollutants, and high energy density, H 2 is one of the prospective options that are seen as a desirable future clean energy carrier. Although there are numerous technologies available for producing H 2 , this review concentrates on fermentative H 2 production techniques, their drawbacks, and current developments. While being a promising method, fermentative strategies still have several drawbacks, including low H 2 production yields. Many approaches have been used to address these issues; among them, the field of metabolic pathway engineering has made enormous strides. To improve H 2 generation, this paper reviewed and discussed several metabolic pathways and modified strains. The recent environmental-related issues such as climate change and global warming have sparked scientists' interest in finding a way to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases through dry reforming of CH 4. As a result of this reaction, not only H 2 is produced, but also CO 2 and CH 4 are reduced. Catalysts are needed due to the enhancement of the kinetics of the reaction. Non-noble metals like Ni, Co, etc., have shown promising activity, they are readily available, and have low cost; consequently, they have been widely employed for the reaction. In this paper, the recent advances in the development of the Ni- and Co-based nanocatalysts for DRM reaction, including the use of different supports and promoters, the addition of alkaline earth metals, and new structures like mesoporous silica and dendritic fibrous nano silica as supports were reviewed. Abstract Considering the overwhelming pressure on worldwide demand of fossil fuels and the climate change caused by air pollution, hybrid electric vehicles have seen a promising future thanks to the development of renewable energy sources. Among various kinds of energy sources that have been used in hybrid electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell exist to be the most favorable ones owing to their high energy density and power density. However, the degradation issues of the energy sources tend to be neglected when designing the energy management strategies for the hybrid electric vehicles. Concerning existing literature, degradation modelling methods of lithium-ion batteries and PEM fuel cells are reviewed and the possibility of integrating them into health-conscious energy management is discussed. Besides, a variety of energy management strategies that have taken the influence of degradations into consideration are reviewed and classified. The contribution of this paper is to investigate the possibility of developing a health-conscious energy management strategy based on accurate estimation of degradation to improve the durability of the system. Abstract Heavy fossil fuels consumption has raised concerns over the energy security and climate change while hydrogen is regarded as the fuel of future to decarbonize global energy use. Hydrogen is commonly used as feedstocks in chemical industries and has a wide range of energy applications such as vehicle fuel, boiler fuel, and energy storage. However, the development of hydrogen energy in Malaysia is sluggish despite the predefined targets in hydrogen roadmap. This paper aims to study the future directions of hydrogen economy in Malaysia considering a variety of hydrogen applications. The potential approaches for hydrogen production, storage, distribution and application in Malaysia have been reviewed and the challenges of hydrogen economy are discussed. A conceptual framework for the accomplishment of hydrogen economy has been proposed where renewable hydrogen could penetrate Malaysia market in three phases. In the first phase, the market should aim to utilize the hydrogen as feedstock for chemical industries. Once the hydrogen production side is matured in the second phase, hydrogen should be used as fuel in internal combustion engines or burners. In the final phase hydrogen should be used as fuel for automobiles (using fuel cell), fuel-cell combined heat and power (CHP) and as energy storage. This paper will introduce the concept of 100% renewable energy and the role hydrogen and fuel cells can play for storage and transportation sectors. The importance, necessity and possibility of an overall global transition from fossil and nuclear-based fuels to renewable energy fuels using electricity and hydrogen as clean energy carriers will be summarized. Polluted, inefficient and unhealthy societies of today are missing energy self-sufficient, better managed, in harmony with nature ecological communities. The possible role of hydrogen fuel cells in fulfilling this target will be demonstrated and the success stories of the leading countries will be given. Renewable energy investments which have started in 2013 increased steadily and reached to 290 billion dollars towards the end of 2015. Today's increasing investments and cheaper supply of renewable energy will in turn effect the hydrogen production costs and increase the diversion from fossil fuels to cheap renewable energy. The demand for clean power source which can be used to run the various types of vehicles on the road is increasing on a daily basis due to the fact that high emissions released from internal combustion engine play a significant role in air pollution and climate change. Fuel cell devices, particularly Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) type, are strong candidates to replace the internal combustion engines in the transport industry. The PEMFC technology still has many challenges including high cost, low durability and hydrogen storage problems which limit the wide-world commercialization of this technology. In this paper, the fuel cell cost, durability and performances challenges which are associated with using of fuel cell technology for transport applications are detailed and reviewed. Recent developments that deal with the proposed challenges are reported. Furthermore, problems of hydrogen infrastructure and hydrogen storage in the fuel cell vehicle are discussed. Fuel cell cehicles (FCVs) have clear societal and environmental benefits and can help mitigate the issues of climate change, urban air pollution and oil dependence. In order for FCVs to have the biggest impact on these issues they need to be employed in large numbers. First, though, they need to be adopted by consumers. Their acceptance depends on positive consumer attitudes towards the vehicles. Currently there is a limited understanding within the literature on how consumers perceive FCVs and what the likelihood of adoption by consumers would be, despite significant governmental and organisational investments into the technology. Therefore this study assesses consumer attitudes towards FCVs in the United Kingdom. 81 persons drove a Hyundai FCV at the Low Carbon Vehicle Event in September 2015 of which 30 took part in this study. The results show that at present FCVs are perceived mostly as being similar to incumbent internal combustion engine vehicles. This is an admirable technical achievement, however in order for consumers to adopt FCVs they will need to be perceived as having distinctive benefits. Two significant barriers to the adoption of FCVs are observed in this sample: high costs and lack of refuelling infrastructure. This paper goes on to make suggestions on how and which beneficial attributes of the vehicles can be promoted to consumers and also makes suggestions on how the barriers can be overcame so that FCVs will be adopted by consumers. Hydrogen is a promising avenue for decarbonising energy systems and providing flexibility. In this paper, the JRC-EU-TIMES model – a bottom-up, technology-rich model of the EU28 energy system – is used to assess the role of hydrogen in a future decarbonised Europe under two climate scenarios, current policy initiative (CPI) and long-term decarbonisation (CAP). Our results indicate that hydrogen could become a viable option already in 2030 – however, a long-term CO 2 cap is needed to sustain the transition. In the CAP scenario, the share of hydrogen in the final energy consumption of the transport and industry sectors reaches 5% and 6% by 2050. Low-carbon hydrogen production technologies dominate, and electrolysers provide flexibility by absorbing electricity at times of high availability of intermittent sources. Hydrogen could also play a significant role in the industrial and transport sectors, while the emergence of stationary hydrogen fuel cells for hydrogen-to-power would require significant cost improvements, over and above those projected by the experts. The use of solar energy especially for water pumping is well adapted for most rural and desert areas. The latter have a great solar energy potential and a shallow underground hydraulic potential. Solar pumping is an exception; it is in fact relatively easy to store potential energy of water with a more reliable elevated tank. In this paper, we present modeling and sizing of photovoltaic pumping system with battery storage. To track maximum output power operating point of the photovoltaic generator, we use three optimization methods: Perturbation and Observation (P&O), Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm (NF). Batteries are added for the purpose of ensuring continuous power flow. The storage battery model used is presented with obtained measurement results. Water scarcity has become a chronic problem aggravated by climate change. One third of the world's population already lives in areas suffering moderate to high water stress; some 1.5 billion people lack ready access to drinking water. Desalination is in the course of becoming a major source of fresh water by tapping into the vast reserves of seawater and brackish water. Large scale desalination plants use either thermal or membrane processes which consume a great deal of energy. Economic implications of large energy requirements coupled with environmental concerns about carbon emissions spurred a growing interest in developing desalination processes that use renewable energy sources. Among these processes the humidification dehumidification (HD) of air, using solar energy, is a simple technology particularly suited for regions in developing countries where there is very low infrastructure and unskilled manpower. In this paper we review various technologies under investigation to desalinate saline water through HD of air and using solar thermal energy. Abstract: Climate change concerns, increasing global energy demand, coupled with pending peak supply of fossil fuels, calls for development of new power source. The rapid price drops for solar technologies and combined with international and national policy changes makes solar energy more affordable and accessible for widespread adoption. Solar energy also contributes towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The combination of electrolysis of water and fuel cells, which use hydrogen as an energy carrier extends the utility of the solar energy. For an integrated solar powered hydrogen production, storage and utilisation system, one of the elements that needs to be designed carefully is the power management system. Power management strategy has a complex function in this type of solar hydrogen system. This paper presents a power management strategy based on fuzzy logic technology to address the problems. The target of this power management strategy is to use the solar power to meet the power demand, then utilise any addition power to maximise the hydrogen production, and minimise the usage of battery at the same time. Therefore, the overall system''s efficiency will be increased and lifetime of the battery pack will be extended. The numerical results based on real solar data for a one year period shown that the proposed fuzzy logic controller can direct the power flow wisely between different elements such as load, electrolyser, fuel cell and battery, it is capable of meeting the daily power demand of an office block and using the excess solar power to produce hydrogen as far as possible while maintaining the battery''s state of charge in a desired region in order to extend the lifespan of the battery. Abstract: It is clear that three of the great challenges facing humanity in the 21st century are energy supply, climate change, and global food security. Although global energy demand is expected to continue to increase, the availability of low cost energy will continue to diminish. Coupled with increasing concerns about climate change due to CO2 release from the combustion of fossil fuels, there is now an urgent need to develop clean and renewable energy system for the hydrogen production. This special issue contains selected papers on photosynthetic and biomimetic hydrogen production presented at the International Conference “Photosynthesis Research for Sustainability-2011”, that was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, during July 24–30, 2011, with the sponsorship of the International Society of Photosynthesis Research (ISPR) and of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy (IAHE). Abstract: The current climate crisis and recent world events, including the global economic crisis and growing concerns over the availability and cost of petroleum fuels, has sparked a global interest in developing alternative, sustainable, clean fuel technologies for the transportation sector. While a multitude of alternative fuel and vehicle technologies have been presented, hydrogen is considered by many as an option of choice. However, the mass-adoption of hydrogen presents many challenges, including appropriate refueling infrastructure supply transitions, consumer vehicle purchase behavior, and fuel costs. Early fleet adoption is one proposed strategy to transition hydrogen use in the transportation sector. Bus-transit demonstration projects have proven the technology, yet there has not been large-scale adoption by transit fleets. This paper addresses infrastructure, vehicle, and personnel needs to support the transition of a medium sized transit agency to full conversion to hydrogen fuel, using Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) as a case study. Specifically, requirements for hydrogen bus fleets, production, storage, refueling and maintenance facilities, and personnel are addressed as well as the transition strategy for implementing the technology. Abstract: Energy production and combating climate change are among some of the most significant challenges we are facing today. Whilst the introduction of a hydrogen economy has its merits, the associated problems with on-board hydrogen storage are still a barrier to implementation. Ammonia and related chemicals may provide an alternative energy vector. Besides ammonia and metal amine salts, some other ammonia related materials such as hydrazine, ammonia borane, ammonia carbonate and urea also have the potential for use as alternative fuels. These materials conform to many of the US DOE targets for hydrogen storage materials. Similar to hydrogen, ammonia itself is carbon-free at the end users, although CO2 emission on production of ammonia is dependent on the source of energy. Both hydrogen and ammonia utilised similar energy sources for production: fossil fuels, biomass, renewable electricity, nuclear and solar energy. While a number of papers have been published on the catalytic decomposition of ammonia or related chemicals to produce hydrogen, the use of fuel cells directly fed by ammonia and related chemicals would have a higher efficiency. In recent years significant progress has been made on direct ammonia, hydrazine and urea fuel cells to generate electricity from these materials for transport applications. With the development and application in these technologies, reduction of CO2 emissions in transportation would be possible. In this review, we propose the use of ammonia and related chemicals as potential indirect hydrogen storage materials. The progress on fuel cells using these fuels is also briefly reviewed. Abstract: This paper addresses the fundamental question of where hydrogen might fit into a global sustainable energy strategy for the 21st century that confronts the three-pronged challenge of irreversible climate change, uncertain oil supply, and rising pollution. We re-envision the role of hydrogen at national and international strategic levels, relying entirely on renewable energy and energy efficiency. It is suggested the time for an exclusive ‘hydrogen economy’ has passed, since electricity and batteries would be used extensively as well. Yet hydrogen would still play a crucial role: in road and rail vehicles requiring a range comparable to today’s petrol and diesel vehicles; in coastal and international shipping; in air transport; and for longer-term seasonal storage on electricity grids relying mainly on renewables. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are proposed where medium and long distance trips are required, with plug-in battery electric vehicles reserved for just short trips. A hierarchy of spatially-distributed hydrogen production, storage and distribution centers relying on local renewable energy sources and feedstocks would be created to limit the required hydrogen pipeline network to the main metropolitan areas and regions by complementary use of electricity as a major energy vector. Bulk hydrogen storage would provide the strategic energy reserve to guarantee national and global energy security in a world relying increasingly on renewable energy. It is recommended that this vision next be applied to specific countries by conducting detailed energy-economic-environmental modeling to quantify its net benefits. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Carbon dioxide is more and more pointed out as one of the factors mostly responsible of climate changes. As a consequence the reduction of CO2 emissions, especially in the energy generation field, is becoming a worldwide must. This paper presents an overview on the main issues that are expected to affect, from this standpoint, power generation scenario and a spur for a critical comparison among ways to capture CO2 by proposing new aspects to be considered within the evaluation criteria. In particular attention is drawn on the fully innovative opportunities that are offered by Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFCs) as a unique option suitable to effectively combine carbon capture from thermal plants and typical benefits of hydrogen and fuel cell power generation. As an example, such a new option is compared with one of the most common technologies forecast for reducing carbon dioxide emissions and relevant results are shortly presented. Abstract: The outcomes of biohydrogen from photosynthesis processes are still small, however different development methods and laboratory studies are carried out to increase the production yield and meanwhile optimize the process to lessen the negative impact on the environment and climate change. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) gives the possibility to compare different biohydrogen production approaches using different photosynthesis methods and, at the same time, identify the environmental “hot spots” of the whole process. Inventory analysis and the results of different researchers in this field allow to find values of selected ecoindicators in order to evaluate the biohydrogen production efficiency with the selection of the best initial data for life cycle analysis. These ecoindicators weigh the resources needed for biohydrogen production whole system. This paper presents the first aspects for the implementation of a life cycle assessment. Abstract: Hydrogen energy technology can be one of the best key players related to the sector of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the hydrogen economy. Comparing to other technologies, hydrogen energy technology is more environmentally sound and friendly energy technology and has great potential as a future dominant energy carrier. Advanced nations including Korea have been focusing on the development of hydrogen energy technology R&D for the sustainable development and low carbon green society. In this paper, we applied the integrated fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (Fuzzy AHP) and the data envelopment analysis (DEA) for measuring the relative efficiency of the R&D performance in the national hydrogen energy technology development. On the first stage, the fuzzy AHP effectively reflects the vagueness of human thought. On the second stage, the DEA approach measures the relative efficiency of the national R&D performance in the sector of hydrogen energy technology development with economic viewpoints. Abstract: This paper deals with how the Hydrogen Energy may play a crucial role in taking care of the environmental scenario/climate change. The R&D efforts, at the Hydrogen Energy Center, Banaras Hindu University have been described and discussed to elucidate that hydrogen is the best option for taking care of the environmental/climate changes. All three important ingredients for hydrogen economy, i.e., production, storage and application of hydrogen have been dealt with. As regards hydrogen production, solar routes consisting of photoelectrochemical electrolysis of water have been described and discussed. Nanostructured TiO2 films used as photoanodes have been synthesized through hydrolysis of Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4. Modular designs of TiO2 photoelectrode-based PEC cells have been fabricated to get high hydrogen production rate (∼10.35lh−1 m−2). However, hydrogen storage is a key issue in the success and realization of hydrogen technology and economy. Metal hydrides are the promising candidates due to their safety advantage with high volume efficient storage capacity for on-board applications. As regards storage, we have discussed the storage of hydrogen in intermetallics as well as lightweight complex hydride systems. For intermetallic systems, we have dealt with material tailoring of LaNi5 through Fe substitution. The La(Nil − x Fe x )5 (x =0.16) has been found to yield a high storage capacity of ∼2.40wt%. We have also discussed how CNT admixing helps to improve the hydrogen desorption rate of NaAlH4. CNT (8mol%) admixed NaAlH4 is found to be optimum for faster desorption (∼3.3wt% H2 within 2h). From an applications point of view, we have focused on the use of hydrogen (stored in intermetallic La–Ni–Fe system) as fuel for Internal Combustion (IC) engine-based vehicular transport, particularly two and three-wheelers. It is shown that hydrogen used as a fuel is the most effective alternative fuel for circumventing climate change. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Fuel economy and emission abatement are issues, which are highly prioritized areas in the automotive industry of today. This paper describes an effort to develop an innovative and environmentally-benign hydrogen generation system operating on commercial diesel fuel to avoid running the engine to supply electricity at stand-still. The use of a fuel cell-based auxiliary power unit (APU) has the potential of delivering electricity at high efficiencies independent of the heavy-duty truck engine. During the reformer development phase, spray formation and mixing of reactants proved to be crucial to obtain high reforming efficiencies and low diesel slip. The diesel is being injected through a nozzle creating a spray of fine droplets of a size which can establish rapid evaporation. Air and steam are being pre-heated and injected into the mixture chamber and subsequently mixed with the evaporated diesel fuel. Depending on the operating parameters, a part of the fuel is being oxidized and produces heat. Autothermal reforming was chosen to circumvent the heat transfer problem in catalytic steam reforming. By supplying heat directly to the catalyst surface by an oxidation reaction the heat demand of the strongly endothermic steam reforming reaction can be fulfilled. We employed CFD calculations, which revealed the importance of avoiding large recirculation zones leading to a prolonged residence time of the hydrocarbon molecules and causing auto-ignition and excessive temperatures in the catalyst. Five different reformer generations are being described and discussed in detail in this publication. The first one was based on a fixed bed reactor, while the other four all relied on catalytic monoliths enabling low pressure drops. The early reactor designs all suffered from auto-ignition and instability problems. The latter generations exhibited a considerably more stable temperature profile in the reformer. Abstract: Small economies such as New Zealand risk significant economic hardship without careful evaluation of alternatives to petroleum-based transportation due to the adverse effects of climate change and depleting international oil reserves. This paper uses an integrated multi-regional multi-fleet system dynamics model of New Zealand''s energy economy to assess the primary impacts of alternative vehicle fleet technologies. Results suggest that hydrogen fuelled HICEs and FCVs may offer significantly greater economic savings than BEVs due to a much lower capital cost. Under our Base Case, 65% of the light fleet are HICEs and FCVs and 5% BEVs. Excluding hydrogen vehicles from the vehicle fleet can result in an average annual cost of US$562 per vehicle between 2015 and 2050. Co-production of hydrogen and electricity using coal gasification with carbon capture and storage is the dominant long term hydrogen production technology. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: With the depletion of fossil fuel resources and the potential consequences of climate change due to fossil fuel use, much effort has been put into the search for alternative fuels for transportation. Although there are several potential alternative fuels, which have low impact on the environment, none of these fuels have the ability to be used as the sole “fuel of the future”. One fuel which is likely to become a part of the over all solution to the transportation fuel dilemma is hydrogen. In this paper, The Toyota Corolla four cylinder, 1.8l engine running on petrol is systematically converted to run on hydrogen. Several ancillary instruments for measuring various engine operating parameters and emissions are fitted to appraise the performance of the hydrogen car. The effect of hydrogen as a fuel compares with gasoline on engine operating parameters and effect of engine operating parameters on emission characteristics is discussed. Based on the experimental setup, a suite of neural network models were tested to accurately predict the effect of major engine operating conditions on the hydrogen car emissions. Predictions were found to be ±4% to the experimental values. This work provided better understanding of the effect of engine process parameters on emissions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper analyses Italian hydrogen scenarios to meet climate change, environmental and energy security issues. An Italy-Markal model was used to analyse the national energy–environment up to 2050. About 40 specific hydrogen technologies were considered, reproducing the main chains of production, transport and consumption, with a focus on transport applications. The analysis is based on the Baseline and Alternative scenario results, where hydrogen reaches a significant share. The two scenarios constitute the starting points to analyse the hydrogen potential among the possible energy policy options. The energy demand in the Baseline scenario reaches values around 240Mtoe at 2030, with an average annual growth of 0.9%. The Alternative scenario reduces consumption down to 220Mtoe and stabilizes the emissions. The Alternative scenario expects a rapid increase of hydrogen vehicles in 2030, up to 2.5 million, corresponding to 1Mtoe of hydrogen consumption. Abstract: Hydrogen is potentially the fuel of the future, with the transition to a hydrogen economy driven by the concerns about the climate change and the depletion of fossil fuel resources. Hydrogen is better than almost all other fuels when the fuels are evaluated on the basis of several metrics, including safety and versatility of use. Hydrogen is also presumed to have a superior motivity factor, a performance measure arising out of a combination of acceleration and drag forces. The motivity factor is quantified on the basis of the gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of a fuel. The present paper offers a refinement of the motivity factor which incorporates the effects of the mass of the storage matrix in these energy densities. It is shown that other fuels may have higher motivity factors than hydrogen when quantified on the basis of these refinements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
