Artificial muscle fibers driven electrothermally with excellent properties of response, stroke, and work capacity are expected to serve in some intelligent structures and systems. However, muscle fibers that operate in subzero environments are highly needed in industrial production and aerospace applications but remain challenging. Herein, we reported a coaxial artificial muscle fiber by electrospinning a sheath of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers on the surface of a carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber core, achieving the actuation in response to thermal at subzero temperatures. The CNT@PCL coaxial muscle fiber under 0.3 MPa achieved a maximum contractile stroke of ~18% as the temperature changed from −130°C to 45°C. The actuation mechanism at subzero temperatures of this muscle fiber was analyzed in combination with the temperature-deformation schematic curve of different polymers. Furthermore, a temperature sensor based on this muscle fiber was developed, due to the excellent linear relationship between the contraction and temperature. A 3D-printed prosthetic arm was designed to further exhibit the application demonstrations of this muscle fiber in subzero environments. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with excellent conductivity and stability have become a promising material to design the strain sensing network. To date, however, the effect of the stacked structure of CNF membrane on the sensing performance has rarely been studied. In this work, we reported a high-performance sensor based on the cross-stacked aligned CNF membrane. The effects of cross-stacked structures on the sensing characteristics were systematically investigated. The flexible strain sensor could capture low detection limit (<0.1%) with a gauge factor (GF) of 4.24 and wide strain range up to 130%. The uniform GF value reached 2050 when the strain was in the range of 100–130%. In addition, the high linearity under 40% strain (>0.998), excellent durability and quick response time (<200 ms) were demonstrated. The excellent comprehensive performances were simultaneously obtained. The sensor could be used in extensive applications, such as monitoring body movements and distinguishing the track of writing. Commercial Chinese ink was employed to disperse pristine vapor-grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) in aqueous suspensions via horizontal ball milling. The obtained suspension was used to fabricate conductive paper-based composites through filtration-deposition onto filter paper. It was found that the carbon black particles from the Chinese ink helped separate VGCNFs and acted as connection points between the VGCNFs, while the glue reinforced the conduction network. Thus, the VGCNF-ink/paper ternary composite showed sufficiently low sheet resistance. With merely 2.5 mg·cm−2 VGCNFs, the sheet resistance could be reduced to 4.5 Ω·sq−1. As a proof of concept, these paper-based composites were directly used as electrodes of solid-state symmetric electronic double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and the substrate for the electrodeposition of MnO2 to achieve higher electrochemical performances. The EDLCs fabricated with 2.5 mg·cm−2 VGCNFs showed a specific capacitance of 224 mF·cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA·cm−2, which was retained by 86.4% after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, thanks to the high electrical conductivity and the porous structure, the MnO2 decorated paper-based composites exhibited dramatically enhanced specific capacitance. This article presents the fabrication and characterization of poly dimethylsiloxane/carbon nanofiber (CNF)-based nanocomposites. Although silica and carbon nanoparticles have been traditionally used to reinforce mechanical properties in PDMS matrix nanocomposites, this article focuses on understanding their impacts on electrical and thermal properties. By adjusting both the silica and CNF concentrations, 12 different nanocomposite formulations were studied, and the thermal and electrical properties of these materials were experimentally characterized. The developed nanocomposites were prepared using a solvent-assisted method providing uniform dispersion of the CNFs in the polymer matrix. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to determine the dispersion of the CNFs at different length scales. The thermal properties, such as thermal stability and thermal diffusivity, of the developed nanocomposites were studied using thermogravimetirc and laser flash techniques. Furthermore, the electrical volume conductivity of each type of nanocomposite was tested using the four-probe method to eliminate the effects of contact electrical resistance during measurement. Experimental results showed that both CNFs and silica were able to impact on the overall properties of the synthesized PDMS/CNF nanocomposites. Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are one of the most popular smart materials due to their light weight and high elastic deformation capability. The synergistic effect of carbon nanofiber (CNF) and carbon nanofiber paper (CNFP) on the electro-actuation of SMP nanocomposites was studied. The electrical conductivity of SMPs was significantly improved by incorporating CNF and CNFP into them. The dynamic mechanical analysis result reveals good thermal stability of SMP nanocomposites even after they were mixed with CNFs. A vision-based control system is designed to precisely control the shape recovery of SMP composites. Any quasi-state shape between the permanent shape and a temporary shape can be achieved by adjusting the electrical energy input. Experimental results demonstrated that (1) compared with the baseline material, the full recovery time of the SMP nanocomposites was decreased by 1000% to less than 80 s; (2) a good repeatability was shown in the developed vision system in 10 experimental trials and the accuracy of the controlled deflection angle of SMPs was within a 5% error bound. In order to more effectively monitor the health of composite structures, a fuzzy fiber sensor has been developed. The fuzzy fiber is a bundle of glass fibers with carbon nanotubes or nanofibers (CNTs or CNFs) grown on the surface. The nanotube coating makes the fiber bundle conductive while the small conductive path increases sensitivity. The fuzzy fiber sensor can replace conventional metal foil strain gauges in composite applications. The electrical response of the sensor is monitored in real time to measure strain, vibration, cracking and delamination. Continuous monitoring provides instant notification of any problems.
