The present study employs critical race theory in a critical discourse analysis of intercollegiate athletic departmental directives for high-profile National Collegiate Athletic Association member programs. Consideration of institutional integrity from critical perspectives can advance a nuanced understanding and gain further insight into the sociocultural issues and move toward eliminating inequities relevant to black student athlete stakeholders in the arena of intercollegiate athletics. The purpose of this research was to investigate the implicit function and perpetuation of contemporary racism in intercollegiate athletic organizations' as they strategically address institutional integrity. A discussion of the findings are organized by two emergent themes: (a) Little skin in the game; and (b) Run-of-the-mill colorblindness. This paper appropriates elements of Jean Baudrillard's provocative contemporary cultural theorizing as a suggestive framework for examining the nature, and influence, of the mass mediated spectacles that dominate American sporting culture. Concentrating on the National Broadcasting Corporation's coverage of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, this discussion highlights the ways in which the network manufactured a simulated model of Olympic reality that was explicitly designed to seduce female television viewers. More specifically, this paper explicates how NBC consciously mobilized traditionally feminine codes within, and through, the content and structure of its prime time televisual discourse. The paper concludes by advancing the notion that, rather than challenging them, NBC's feminization of Olympic reality merely accentuated the essentialist and hierarchically ordered notions of gender identities, practices. and experiences, which reside all too comfortably within the popular imaginary. This paper updates and extends previous analyses of the sociology of sport in the United States. It provides a chronology of major events in the history of the field as well as a description of the social context in which the field emerged and grew. Then a review of data from both sociology and physical education leads to the conclusion that the sociology of sport in the United States continues to lack full legitimacy and a critical mass of members in both disciplines. In fact, there are reasons to conclude that the continued numerical growth of those calling themeselves sport sociologists has peaked and will not change significantly in the immediate future. Finally, a content summary of papers published in the first 14 issues of the Sociology of Sport Journal reveals the priorities given to research topics and research methodologies among those Americans doing some of more significant work in the field. This paper provides an analysis of media portrayals of male and female athletes in the 1984 and the 1988 Summer Olympics Games as reflected in the Globe and Mail in Canada and the New York Times in the United States. Quantitative content analyses, supplemented by some qualitative analysises, are employed to test the general hypothesis that men receive more attention, and more favourable portrayals than women in sports news in the mass media.
