This paper explores the relationship between digital technologies and preservation of popular music heritage and focuses on the AR exhibition, David Bowie Is. Through the lens of discourse analysis, it discusses the interpretation of the popular music and its various digital narratives, the authenticity of user experiences, and how museum functions can be promoted by virtual exhibitions. It provides multiple narratives to tell Bowie’s untold stories and experiments on music, stage, and costumes that questioned gender and social norms. It creates authentic experiences for the audience through offering augmented information on exhibits that arouse the audience’s emotions and trigger their memories. The AR exhibition can also help to promote the museum’s functions due to access without boundaries, digital preservation and enhancing the museum’s educational role. The paper suggests that this AR exhibition offers new ways for museums to preserve popular music and different experiences of listening with potential commercial value.

At a time when history gives us one of the last opportunities to confront our knowledge of World War II, with the knowledge of people living in those days, there are buildings created with strong transmission not only architectural, but also of a great emotional load. At the same time, when the political system does not forbid to speak openly about the past period, and the technology allows you to create structures, about which we could only dream of even several dozen years ago, and objects such as the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk are designed. In this paper are presented the current trends shaping the museum facilities, with the example of the Museum of the Second World War. The diversity of forms, materials and technology makes it impossible to establish a single standard for this type of public buildings, and that makes each of these objects unique. At the same time, it is possible to identify some common spatial treatments noted in the sector of architecture devoted to exhibitions and commemoration. The Museum of the Second World War is a newly created structure, in the design of which the authors used advanced technology (which allows the implementation of its ideas) in order to meet the ever-growing needs of users. The popularity of museums depends on many factors, such as the type and form of the offered exhibitions, the transfer of information and emotional value, location of the building and adaptation of the facility to the users' needs, which differ in many respects (age, the efficiency of perception, education or wealth). Given that museums are usually buildings that have noticeable form in the urban landscape, the paper will describe how to set up the idea, and later its implementation, impact on urban space. Additionally, for some time exhibitions and architecture surrounding them have become a tool for the promotion of towns, regions, or even the whole countries. The fact is that the exhibitions are visited not only by local residents but also by tourists. If the museum is well integrated into the urban spatial structure (landscape), it has a good chance to become one of the symbols of the city. Additionally, it can promote creating and deepening the sense of identity of the local users' public space.

International Conference ICEC 26 - ICMC 2016 was organized at New Delhi, India during March 7-11, 2016. Previous conference ICEC25-ICMC 2014 was held at the University of Twente, The Netherlands in July 2014. Next Conference ICEC 27- ICMC 2018 will be held at Oxford, UK during September 3-7, 2018 1. Introduction This is a biennial international conference on cryogenic engineering and cryogenics materials organized by the International Cryogenic Engineering Committee and the International Cryogenic Material Committee. For some years, the host country has been alternating between Europe and Asia. The present conference was held at the Manekshaw Convention Centre, New Delhi, India during March 7-11, 2016 and hosted jointly by the Indian Cryogenics Council (ICC) and the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. Put all together as many as 547 persons participated in the conference. Out of these 218 were foreign delegates coming from 25 countries and the rest from India. 2. Inaugural Session & Course Lectures The pre conference short course lectures on "Cryocoolers" and "Superconducting Materials for Power Applications" were organized on 7th March. Cryocooler course was given jointly by Dr. Chao Wang from M/s. Cryomech, USA and Prof. Milind Atrey from IIT Bombay, India. The Course on Superconducting Materials was given by Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam from the University of Houston, USA. The conference was inaugurated in the morning of March 8th in a typical Indian tradition and in the presence of the Chief Guest, Dr. R Chidambaram (Principle Scientific Adviser to Govt. of India), Guest of Honour, Prof. H Devaraj (Vice Chairman University Grant Commission), Prof Marcel ter Brake ( Chair, ICEC Board), Prof. Wilfried Goldacker (Chair, ICMC board), Dr. D Kanjilal (Director IUAC), Dr R K Bhandari, (President, Indian Cryogenic Council ). Dr. T S Datta, Chair Local Organizing Committee coordinated the proceedings of the inaugural function. 3. Technical Session There were 6 plenary talks delivered by the eminent scientist/ technologists. The topics on which these talks were delivered were Cryogenics for Indian Space Programme, The Cold Chain, Super-fluid Cooling Technology, Review on Superconducting Materials in China, Review on Cryogenics and Superconductivity for present day MRI and finally the Mendelssohn Award lecture on the 50 years of Cryogenics and Superconductivity for High Energy Physics. Other than the plenary talks, there were 102 oral presentations covered in 18 technical sessions, out of which 21 were Invited Talks. Each session was dedicated to a specific topic like Large Scale Cryogenics, Cryogenics for Accelerators, Fusion and Space, Cryocoolers, Heat Transfer, Cryogenic Instrumentation, Superconducting Materials, Superconducting Magnets & Cavities, Power Applications, LNG & Safety etc. In addition to oral presentations there were three poster sessions spread over three days and a total of 250 posters were displayed. 4. Award Session There was a dedicated session on Award Ceremony. Dr Haishan Cao, post doctoral researcher at the University of Twente, The Netherlands received the 2016 Klipping Award for his work on Micro-machined Joule-Thomson coolers. The ICMC Cryogenic Material Awardee for Excellence (2016) was Prof. Kazumasa Iida, Department of Crystalline Materials Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University. Japan. The paper published in " Cryogenics 72 (2015), p 111-121 by J. Bartlett, G. Hardy, and I.D. Hepburn, titled "Performance of a fast response miniature Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator using a single crystal tungsten magneto resistive heat switch" was selected for the best paper award. The prestigious 2016 Mendelssohn Award was given to Dr. Philippe Lebrun of CERN, Geneva, Switzerland for his life-long contribution to Cryogenics and Superconductivity for accelerator programme. Each awardees was also presented with a complimentary book from Springer Nature through the efforts of Dr. R.G. Sharma. 5. Exhibition, Cultural Evening & Technical Tour An Industrial exhibition with about 30 international and Indian companies displayed their advanced products in the field of cryogenics and superconductivity for three days. A banquette was hosted in a resort on the outskirt of the city of Delhi on March 10, 2016. A cultural evening was also organized on March 9, 2016 where delegates too participated and enjoyed typical Indian folk dances. On the last day, a technical tour to Inter University Accelerator Centre and a cultural tour to Delhi Monuments was organized for the Delegates. 6. Manuscripts Based on the presentations, we received about 234 manuscripts by March 20, 2016 for the purpose of publication in IOP Conference series (Material Science & Engineering). To ensure the high publication standard mandated by IOP, every paper was reviewed by at least two referees before it was accepted for publication. In all 154 manuscripts were accepted for publication based upon the comments of the referees and the final decision of the Editorial Board. 7. Acknowledgement As editors of this proceedings, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of referees / members of organizing and steering committee involved in the evaluation of the papers for their valuable contribution. The idea of Science and Technology Parks (STP) emerged in the 1950s. The Parks have accumulated several architectural functions, including research centers, scientific exhibitions and innovator residence, etc. As these Parks gradually spread, some of them were linked to university complexes, while others had independent sites. The STP have been linked to the prosperity of society by providing an environment that fosters a culture of innovation and transforming research and ideas based on innovation into a commercially marketed product. However, the functional architectural concept of the STP remained unclear. The objective of this paper is to clarifying the stages of development of Parks architecture, investigating their activities, their linkage regarding planning and design, and the way they act as means to evolve innovation in societies.

The 20th century was a period in the history of humanity that was marked by numerous technological advances, many discoveries and achievements in terms of knowledge, science and the arts, as well as numerous changes and political restructuring. In the Human Sciences, especially in Philosophy, new concepts and thoughts that marked and conquered the opinions of the intellectuals of that time emerged. One of these new concepts was the “Deconstruction” around the 60s of that century. The term “Deconstruction” was used for the first time by the philosopher Jacques Derrida in his work “De Grammatologie” in 1967. Deconstructivist Architecture emerged in the 80s of the 20th century. Deconstruction had as the main intention the rediscovery of new values, through the contrast of concepts, and the suppression of Modernism. Architecture was no exception, because new thoughts, styles, movements and new constructive techniques arose, which produced and caused a (re)affirmation of Architecture in society, through the implementation of new configurations and modern spatial conceptions. “Deconstruction”, as an architectural movement, arose from the fusion of the Russian Constructivism and other movements related to the philosophical concept of “Deconstruction” presented by Jacques Derrida. But it is the 1988 exhibition “Deconstructivist Architecture” organized by Marc Wigley and Philip Johnson at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), in New York, that acknowledges Deconstruction in Architecture. Frank Gehry, Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelb(l)au, and Bernard Tschumi were the avant-garde architects featured in this exhibition. On the 25th anniversary of the exhibition, MoMA curator Barry Bergdoll hosted “Deconstructivism: Retrospective Views and Actuality”, which traced the subsequent careers of that seven architects to examine the impact of the exhibition and the changes in architecture in those 25 years. This paper identifies the Deconstruction concepts that were the basis of deconstructivist architecture but keeping in mind that Iconic deconstructivist architects were not committed completely to all concepts of this philosophy as they produced their architectural objects. Two iconic buildings as Peter Eisenman’s City of Culture outside Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain) are presented to achieve the debate.

The Museum of History located in the Bratislava Castle is an important part of the complex of specialised museums of the Slovak National Museum. Its basic mission is to purposefully acquire, preserve, scientifically and professionally process, use and make available the museum collections, documenting the development of society in Slovakia from the Middle Ages until the present. In this context of the museum´s specialisation, it has a nationwide scope. The current character of the exhibition spaces in the Bratislava Castle is based on the context of the building. At the last reconstruction was castle returned to the Baroque period. This reconstruction recognizes the historicity not only of the building but also of the architectural design of the interior. The individual exhibitions, made in the castle´s premises, are adapted to the specific architectural space. The paper presents a case study of the presentation of selected specific piece of artwork in the traditional interior of the Slovak National Museum in the Bratislava Castle. The proposed presentation strategy of artwork provides a comprehensive use of information and communication technologies. These modern presentation possibilities increase the visibility and attendance this type of exhibitions. The use of new technologies and the minimalist installation of the artwork is in sharp contrast to the essence of the exhibition – The St. Ursula vax statue. In addition to the physical presentation of the piece of artwork, emphasis is placed on the presentation of the process of restoration of the statue through the itself story. The applied research, that is presented in this papier is realized through the setup of exhibition. Its aim is to present a piece of art for the general public and professional researcher. Emphasis is focusing on the use of intellectual perception of reality through vision and hearing in conjunction with the presentation of the restoration of the piece of art. By combining the spoken word, story, music and visual background in relation to the architectural space, we verify the possibilities of the exhibition system itself in the context of the sustainability of creative activities in the Slovak National Museum. Thanks to the non-traditional form of exhibitions in the architectural space of the museum, this type of presentation is innovative and unconventional.

User interesting experience is a method to meet users’ emotional needs and an innovative idea in product interaction design. From the perspective of users’ interesting interactive experience, this study will discuss and analyze the current situation of product interaction design, the aesthetic interaction concept of products, the design method and application theory of interactive products. The research method is a combination of literature research method and exploratory research method, taking the structure of “theory-practice-theory” as the research idea, and exploring new interesting product design through practical design. The practical design will design three new interactive products based on users’ interesting experience, namely, a new swing bowl combining ceramic and metal technology, an integrated and convenient fruit tray, and a new interesting exhibition cabinet. This paper will combine theory and practice design to research and analysis, explore a fun interactive product design concept.

A brief historical overview of the development of tree-inspired structures is given first. It starts with the world's first three mushroom slab constructions built from 1906 to 1908 and continues with several tree-inspired roof structures of the first half of the twentieth century. The main part of the paper describes eight selected buildings in Ljubljana, Slovenia, all of them examples of mushroom or umbrella structures made of reinforced concrete. The oldest described building is an experimental structure from 1933, then come two pavilions built at Ljubljana's Exhibition Centre, three different examples of gas stations, canopies for cars, and canopies at the Ljubljana's main railway station. Except the oldest one, all were built in the 1960's and early 1970's. The buildings are compared quantitatively regarding their overall size, shape of the roof, and the number of the repetitive structures these buildings are made of. The type of each described structure is examined and compared to others. Laymen and even some experts often use the terms mushroom and umbrella structure imprecisely, the indifference and the lack of knowledge being the most probable reasons. Based on the presented analysis it is asserted that the distinction between mushroom and umbrella structures must be made regarding how the load force is transferred from the roof to the pillar. This distinction should also be made first when classifying recently built tree-inspired structures.

Garden exhibitions in Germany are organizing urban structures for almost 70 years. Their special formula is premised on choosing degraded areas in different cities. The open-air garden exhibition is open to public for 5-6 months. Then the area is turned into multifunctional leisure park with various sport and cultural facilities. The paper main objective is to analyze the impact of BUGA (abbrev. Bundesgartenschau) garden exhibition on medium and small urban structures. Analyzed cities: Brandenburg an der Havel, Premnitz, Rathenow and Havelberg are located within 85 km radius from the German capital - Berlin. With almost 4 million inhabitants it is a main city of Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, inhabited by over 6 million people. Analyzed settlements are located in the Havelland region on western extremities of the metropolitan area. They were hosts of first fully decentralized BUGA (Federal Garden Exhibition) 2015 horticultural exhibition, held at the same time in five venues. Analyzed settlements have population varying from 70 thousands (Brandenburg an der Havel) to 6,6 thousands (Havelberg). They have subsequently different significance in territorial development. However, in the shadow of great European metropolis they are facing very similar socio-economical problems, reflecting urban structure. These settlements, subject to emigration, were gradually degrading. The BUGA 2015 horticultural exhibition was meant to give the new impulse for these settlements. The main objective of the exhibition was to create new positive image of these places by investments in degraded, but still important for local society, public spaces. In general, it was an event promoting the whole trail linking the cities in the Havel River Valley. Each stop, the city or village had different genius loci highlighted and reflected by both revitalized and new structures. Horticultural exhibitions are widely recognized media-events in Germany. Therefore, they function as a travel magnet. They also educate the society not only in terms of horticultural novelties and landscape architecture latest trends, but also in wider aspects like ecological and aesthetic awareness. In decentralized form of the hiking trail, like in Havel River Valley it promotes the whole region. The tradition and spirit of the place become real in festival-related constructed environment. For municipality it is an honour to be a host city of the exhibition. Many local companies are usually involved in the whole process of preparations and promoted during the festival. All this builds and strengthens the cultural identity of the local society. Local society involvement is very important in terms of nurturing cultural distinctiveness, which is one of the main elements driving cultural tourism. Also increased tourist traffic promotes local businesses. The festival as an impulse, forces improvement of municipalities weaknesses e.g. collective transport and infrastructure, which enables further development of tourism and associated services.

One city, one international exhibition of architecture, one neighbourhood and one project all closely connected. The City is Berlin, the "Internationale Bauausstellung" means international architecture exhibition (IBA); Alvaro Siza Vieira is the project architect located in the Kreuzberg neighbourhood. Berlin is a city built in parts, but also thought by parts. With the IBA still in the years of the Wall, Berlin has been a place of experimentation on the idea of European city. It was in this context that Alvaro Siza was called on several occasions; the first ones out from his Portuguese experience. Siza built in Berlin-Kreuzberg a building usually considered a tribute to the Modern Movement. In spite of his organic influences, there is in building a look for another strand of the city history of architecture: to the reflections of rationalist language. For Siza, Berlin has become an occasion to deepen a research on the relations applied to the rationalist language. The present paper tries to find the way to look the radicality and vitality of the building "Bonjour Tristesse" that has taken the challenge of collecting the remains of rationalism in order to create a new formulation of the rational strand – new rationality.

Earthquakes represent huge risks for cultural heritage. Although there is a large literature about prevention on historical buildings, the seismic assessment on collections and exhibition designs is usually underestimated. "RESIMUS" long running project involves different knowledge and fields; its goal is to prevent seismic damages to museum collections and artefacts, combining both museographical solutions and anti-seismic methods. This contribution focuses on the "Fontana di Giunone", designed in 1555 by Bartolomeo Ammannati and currently kept at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. The museographical and historical researches have been combined with the seismic performance of the reconstructed Fountain. In this paper the first results provided by the seismic analysis of this artefact are shown. A 3D structural model has been set, based on the three dimensional digital model provided by an detailed laser scanner survey. An elastic dynamic analysis has been performed, by representing the seismic input through an ensemble of seven ground motions expressing the seismic hazard of the area. The analysis has provided the seismic response of the sculptures, evidencing its sensitivity to the dynamic properties of the considered ground motions.

In current day structural design the use of composite steel-concrete structures has become the norm; because of the advantages that each of these materials has to offer. Composite structures also have the benefit of a faster execution at a lower cost, compared to traditional structures. While the arguments in favour of designing composite structures are well-known and appreciated by civil engineers; there remains a question of integrating these structures in modern-day urban landscapes. Eastern European countries are welcoming a blossoming of culture, arts, economy and industry, which unavoidably and necessarily will lead to a change in urban landscapes. With an increasing amount of foreign companies opening offices in these areas, the need for modern office solutions has arisen. The current paper presents a case study of an office building complex situated in the western part of Romania, in the city of Timisoara. The complex consists of 5 office buildings; all designed in composite steel-concrete structure, an underground parking lot, multiple terraces and adjacent promenade areas. Within the context of rapid growth and development of the city, the City Business Centre has offered high quality office spaces in the heart of the city, while considering the needs of the community. A very important aspect in the successful completion of the project was the efficient and professional collaboration between the separate project teams, between the owner, represented by the project management team, the architect, the structural designer and the building company. The successful joining of seismic structural solutions with modern architectural aesthetics has led to a dynamic, vibrant environment, making the City Business Centre the core of the region's business life, at the same time redefining Timisoara's architectural landscape. A testimony to the success of the project was the Civil Engineering Structural Designers Associations' (AICPS) 3rd Prize awarded for great performance and quality in structural design. The project was also awarded a "Green Building of the Year" award by the Romanian Green Building Council and also the "Office Development of the Year" in South-Eastern Europe awarded at the Real Estate Awards by an international jury of renowned real estate developers, consulting firms and investment banks. The project was also selected by the European Architects' Council to represent Romania in a Sustainable Architecture Exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Among the many projects realized in public spaces, some are truly unique – and these are the ones that build the identity of a place. The aim of this paper is to examine how integrating art and cultural strategies into public space can enhance and reinforce the sense of a place. Particular attention is devoted to urban spaces that we call "places in transition", where public art improves the city's imaginative capacity, enlivens neighbourhoods, and sparks civic exchange. Research methods include multidisciplinary literature studies and a detailed case study of the Rose Kennedy Greenway (RKG) – a contemporary urban park in Boston, USA, intended to stitch together the various neighbourhoods surrounding downtown. The Greenway is also a place in transition, to which the Conservancy introduces innovative and contemporary art through temporary exhibitions, engaging people in experiences, interactions and dialogue with art. The five-year Public Art Strategy was supported by Fund for the Arts, a public art program of the New England Foundation for the Arts. The main vision of the project is to amplify the Greenway's unique characteristic through art that is connective, innovative, and celebratory. There are the two main types of projects within the Public Art Strategy for the RKG: short-term projects called "Platforms" and long-term projects called "Magnets". The particular conceptual framework is being developed to guide proposals: connection, interactivity, civic dialogue, ecology, and the environment. The article examines the case and analyses the important issues related to implementing art into a public space such as re-imagining places, short-term and long-term artistic interventions, arts and cultural programming.

After years of neglect and underinvestment, the Polish railways are now witnessing a rapid modernization of both their technical facilities and rolling stock. However, this is true only of the main railway lines connecting major urban complexes. It is worth pointing out that a great number of secondary lines, railway stations and halts still has not been covered by the transformation process. Railway facilities, warehouses and service features are in decay. Rapid technological developments have caused numerous architectural structures of historical interest and service features to fall out of use. There are historical railway facilities dating back to the late 19th or early 20th centuries, whose condition is constantly deteriorating. The only way to save these structures is to change the manner, in which they are being used, and attract new investors and operators. The adaptation of buildings may be carried out in a number of ways by following different strategies. The process depends on the structure's current condition and significance for the railway network. The facilities which are disused as a result of technological changes in the rolling stock and infrastructure include workshops, steam locomotive bays, turntables and warehouses. Their size and location within a city make them a perfect place for commercial services, exhibitions, heritage sites, concerts and other events attracting great numbers of people. Other strategies may be used for constructions located next to railways lines, whose role has declined. Such constructions include small railway stations, warehouses, reloading and forwarding facilities, railway ramps, railway staff buildings as well as residences for railway employees. Railway stations located at large junctions can handle passenger traffic or freight loading operations. As well as acting as the only window to the world, railway stations in small towns housed all the services available in the place. At the same time, they served as meeting spots, community centres and places of particular social importance. Therefore, successful renewal requires adaptation and functional conversion in order to cater to the needs of the inhabitants and visiting travellers. Such activities should focus on architectural, social and economic spaces. This paper presents small railway stations of historical value with a view to their adaptive potential, as well as examples of completed adaptation projects.

In order to achieve a more convenient and accurate digital museum navigation, we have developed a real–time and online-to-offline museum exhibits recognition system using image recognition method based on deep learning. In this paper, the client and server of the system are separated and connected through the HTTP. Firstly, by using the client app in the Android mobile phone, the user can take pictures and upload them to the server. Secondly, the features of the picture are extracted using the deep learning network in the server. With the help of the features, the pictures user uploaded are classified with a well-trained SVM. Finally, the classification results are sent to the client and the detailed exhibition's introduction corresponding to the classification results are shown in the client app. Experimental results demonstrate that the recognition accuracy is close to 100% and the computing time from the image uploading to the exhibit information show is less than 1S. By means of exhibition image recognition algorithm, our implemented exhibits recognition system can combine online detailed exhibition information to the user in the offline exhibition hall so as to achieve better digital navigation.

Foreword The 17th ICSFS took place at the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from the 8th to the 11th of September, 2014. The conference focused on recent advances in controlling and characterizing the physical and chemical properties of films and surfaces, with a particular emphasis on materials for electronic, photonic and spintronic applications. In addition, themes of bio-functionalized structures and devices were strongly discussed in the ICSFS, covering interdisciplinary nano and nano-bio science and technology. The conference has promoted, in various sub-fields of materials surfaces and thin films, an excellent forum for exchange of ideas, presentation of technical achievements and discussion of future directions in the field. In this volume of the IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering we are glad to present 11 peer-reviewed ICSFS contributing papers. The cross-disciplinary nature of conference topics is clearly reflected in these Proceedings' contents. The themes discussed ranged from those close to more traditional condensed matter physics, such as semiconductor surfaces to physical chemistry related issues. The Proceedings were organized in accordance with contributions presented at the Conference. We were glad with the presence of over 160 participants, including 24 invited and plenary talks and over 50 oral contributions. We strongly believe that these Proceedings will be useful for a wide audience of those interested in basic and applied surfaces and thin solid interfaces.
