10. Optimisation of Flame Holder Design for Micro Gas Turbine

Abstract

Micro gas turbine (MGT) is an efficient alternative to costly generation and transmission of electricity especially in combined heat and power (CHP) for remote areas applications. In this study, an optimum geometry of a flame holder of MGT combustion chamber was determined in terms of height and diameter using solid works and ANSYS fluent. To determine and optimise the flame holder geometry, species transport and non-premix with radiation models were used in ANSYS fluent. Optimisation process was performed to select the best geometry of flame holder that produces lowest CO emission. The flame holder was divided in to three zones namely; pre-mix, combustion and dilution zones respectively. The test parameters applied during simulation include: the diameter of holes, number of rows per zone, heat flux through convective heat transfer, percentage excess air and location of dead zone. Optimum diameter of holes for the zones was found out to be 6, 8 and 10 mm with each having four rows of holes. In addition, 60 cm height and 2 inches diameter of flame holder showed a well distributed flame contours. The application of heat flux under radiation model reveals an acceptable CO emission of 102 ppm and average temperature of 1218 °C for the diesel fuel used.

Abstract

Exhaust is made to make a way that guide and expel exhaust gasses far from the engine. Inside exhaust system, there are four noteworthy parts which are muffler, perforation, resonator chamber, inlet and outlet. For mechanical performance of perforated resonator can be controlled by size of holes. The aim of this paper is to analyzing internal part geometry of exhaust muffler in order to increase Modenas CT115s performance by using Ansys software as a programmed to calculate the velocity magnitude and the flow rate of exhaust muffler. Consequently, high proficiency inside the exhaust system will create a brilliant execution and high quality performance. From the simulation shows that decreasing the size of holes give ultimately impact to performance of exhaust.

Abstract

In this study, the main focus is to study the thrust generation of various propeller blade width-spans with the mouth-ring application. By using the parameter, the thrust were calculated based on the value of velocity, voltage and RPM. The testing was performing in three different width-span that are; 10mm, 8mm and 5mm. There are also variable that be tested that cover the reducing the diameter of mouth-ring from 36 mm to 32mm. In addition, if compared the gaps and different position proved that centre position gives better thrust. Furthermore, the application of mouth-ring is evaluated to be good base on this study

38. Solid Catalyst Nanoparticles derived from Oil-Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OP-EFB) as a Renewable Catalyst for Biodiesel Production

Abstract

Solid nanocatalyst derived from oil-palm empty fruit bunches (OP-EFB) fiber was successfully synthesized and its application for biodiesel production was investigated. The OPEFB was treated by burning, milling and heating methods to generate ashes in a nanoparticle size. The nanoparticle palm-bunch ash was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the calcination temperature and catalyst amounts for transesterification reactions were investigated. XRD analysis of palm bunch ash exhibited that the highest composition of peaks characteristic were potassium oxide (K2O). SEM analysis showed that the nano palm bunch ash have a particle size ranging of 150-400 nm. The highest conversion of palm-oil to biodiesel reach to 97.90% was observed by using of palm bunch ash nanocatalyst which heated at 600degC, 3 h reaction time and 1% catalyst amount. Reusability of palm bunch ash catalysts was also examined. It was found that of its high active sites, reusable solid catalyst was obtained by just heating of palm bunch ash. It has a capability to reduce not only the amount of catalyst consumption but also reduce the reaction time of transesterification process.

39. Development of Bioactive Ceramic Coating on Titanium Alloy substrate for Biomedical Application Using Dip Coating Method

Abstract

Bioactive apatite, such as hydroxyapatite ceramic (HA), [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] has been extensively investigated for biomedical applications due to its excellent biocompatibility and tissue bioactivity properties. Its bioactivity provides direct bonding to the bone tissue. Because of its similarity in chemical composition to the inorganic matrix of bone, HA is widely used as implant materials for bone. Unfortunately, because of its poor mechanical properties,. this bioactive material is not suitable for load bearing applications. In this study, by the assistance of dip-coating technique, HA coatings were deposited on titanium alloy substrates by employing hydrothermal derived HA powder. The produced coatings then were oven-dried at 130degC for 1 hour and calcined at various temperature over the range of 200-800degC for 1 hour. XRD measurement showed that HA was the only phase present in the coatings. However coatings calcined at 800degC comprised a mixture of HA and tri-calcium phosphate (TCP). FTIR measurement showed the existence of hydroxyl, phosphate, and carbonate bands. PO4 - band became sharper and narrower with the increased of calcination temperature. FESEM observation showed that the coating is polycrystalline with individual particles of nano to submicron size and has an average particle size of 35 nm. The thickness of the coating are direcly propotional with the viscosity of coating slurry. It was shown that the more viscous coating slurry would produce a thicker ceramic coating. Mechanical properties of the coating were measured in term of adhesion strength using a Micro Materials Nano Test microscratch testing machine. The result revealed that the coating had a good adhesion to the titanium alloy substrate.

40. Parameter Optimization Of Natural Hydroxyapatite/SS316l Via Metal Injection Molding (MIM)

Abstract

Metal injection molding (MIM) are well known as a worldwide application of powder injection molding (PIM) where as applied the shaping concept and the beneficial of plastic injection molding but develops the applications to various high performance metals and alloys, plus metal matrix composites and ceramics. This study investigates the strength of green part by using stainless steel 316L/ Natural hydroxyapatite composite as a feedstock. Stainless steel 316L (SS316L) was mixed with Natural hydroxyapatite (NHAP) by adding 40 wt. % Low Density Polyethylene and 60 %wt. Palm Stearin as a binder system at 63 wt. % powder loading consist of 90 % wt. of SS316 L and 10 wt. % NHAP prepared thru critical powder volume percentage (CPVC). Taguchi method was functional as a tool in determining the optimum green strength for Metal Injection Molding (MIM) parameters. The green strength was optimized with 4 significant injection parameter such as Injection temperature (A), Mold temperature (B), Pressure (C) and Speed (D) were selected throughout screening process. An orthogonal array of L9 (3)4 was conducted. The optimum injection parameters for highest green strength were established at A1, B2, C0 and D1 and where as calculated based on Signal to Noise Ratio.

41. Solvent Debinding of MIM Parts in a Polystyrene-Palm Oil Based Binder System

Abstract

The influence of the leaching temperatures on the solvent debinding process of SS316L stainless steel alloy compact has been investigated. Solvent debinding process of injection moulded SS316L feedstock was conducted to eliminate palm kernel oil by using n- heptane solution at various temperatures of 40, 50 and 60degC and at different time duration up to 9 hours. The samples were prepared by injection molding a mixture of stainless steel SS316L alloy with waste polystyrene polymer and palm kernel oil at powder loading 60% vol. The weight loss percentages of palm kernel were calculated and the pore structure evolution was analyzed by scanning electron micrograph to observe the pores created after solvent extraction process. Results show that a complete diffusion of the palm kernel molecules out of the compact part best at 60degC within 6 hours of extraction time

42. Characterization of Stainless Steel 316L Feedstock for Metal Injection Molding (MIM) Using Waste Polystyrene and Palm Kernel Oil Binder System

Abstract

This paper presents the homogeneity characterisation of MIM feedstock consisting Stainless steel alloy (316 L) powder mix with binder 60wt% of waste polystyrene and 40wt% palm kernel oil. It is one of a critical step that must be conducted in MIM process in order to have a feedstock that is homogeneous and moldable. Water atomised Stainless Steel powder was mixed with the newly developed binder system in a Brabender Plastograph EC rotary mixer. Several tests were performed to assess the homogeneity of the feedstock that was produced at 60 vol % powder loading . The 60 vol.% was chosen because the Critical Powder Volume Concentration (CPVC) of the Powder was found to be 64.8 vol.%. The tests conducted were feedstock density, binder burn-out, rheology and SEM morphology observation. Rheological results exhibited pseudoplastic or shear thinning flow behavior, where its viscosity decreased with increasing shear rate. The feedstock viscosity also decreased with increasing temperature and was found to be suitable for molding. From all the tests conducted, it was found that the feedstock shows good homogeneity and suitable for subsequent processes in MIM.
