In forensic nursing, carers must balance caring and limiting actions in encounters with patients. Interpreting suffering in others raises awareness of one's own vulnerability. Hence, the aim of this study was to describe the phenomenon of vulnerability as experienced by carers in forensic inpatient care. Nine participants were recruited at a major forensic hospital, and their narratives were analysed with a reflective lifeworld approach. The findings revealed that vulnerability was both a strength and a burden. Vulnerability comprised becoming aware of one's boundaries, being genuine and protecting oneself. There is a general agreement regarding the significance of patient participation in care. In forensic psychiatric care, however, this appears to be troublesome because of the paradoxical nature of having responsibility; to give person-centered, recovery-oriented psychiatric care and to protect society from potentially dangerous individuals. The aim of this study was to describe patients' lived experiences of participation in outpatient forensic psychiatric care. Data were collected by means of individual interviews with five patients. The phenomenological hermeneutical analysis shed light on patient participation as having two dimensions. The outer dimension focuses on participation as "doing" and as a means of developing the understanding and skills necessary for being discharged from forensic care, while the inner dimension is related to "being" and experiences of acceptance and inclusion in communion with other people. This emphasises the importance of supporting patients' experiences of being involved in everyday life together with others, even in periods when patients' possibilities to affect decisions regarding their care are limited. Patients in forensic psychiatric clinics are a vulnerable and exposed patient group due to suffering from a severe mental disorder, having committed a crime and being cared for against their will in an institutional environment with a high level of security. This study aims to describe forensic psychiatric patients' experiences of their offense and its meaning for their lives, and to increase the understanding of the meaning of the offense in the eyes of the patient. The data analyzed was collected by interviews with forensic psychiatric patients and analyzed by narrative analysis. The findings suggest that forensic psychiatric patients have different types of stories describing the offense and its meaning in their lives. Illness narratives can be utilized therapeutically because they may construct patients' identity, experiences, and their situation as people with an illness seek explanations and meanings for their plight. This paper reports on an investigation into the skills and competencies of forensic learning disability nurses in the United Kingdom. The two sample populations were forensic learning disability nurses from the high, medium, and low secure psychiatric services and non-forensic learning disability nurses from generic services. An information gathering schedule was used to collect the data; of 1200 schedules, 643 were returned for a response rate of 53.5%. The data identified the 'top ten' problems that forensic learning disability nurses may encounter, the skills and competencies necessary to overcome them, and the areas that need to be developed in the future. The results indicated that the forensic learning disability nurses tended to focus on the physical aspects to the role whilst the non-forensic learning disability nurses tended to perceive the forensic role in relational terms.
