The study describes organic producers’ perceptions of organic livestock production, product commercialisation, use of contentious inputs such as allopathic antibiotics, antiparasitics and vitamins and bedding materials availability in Mediterranean (MED) and North/Western European (NWE) countries. A total of 426 MED (46.2%) and NWE (53.8%) responses were analysed revealing more difficulty finding information on alternatives to antiparasitics and antibiotics than on bedding materials. They identified ‘feeding/nutrition’, ‘animal health’ and ‘welfare’ as the most relevant topics in their farms. Whereas ruminants and monogastrics farmers in the NWE region also indicated ‘organic regulation’ as relevant, farmers rearing ruminant species in the MED region identified farm profitability and commercialisation. Farmers still mainly relied in conventional treatments but they often applied phytotherapy, although >61% of the participants did not treat their animals in the last year. If treated, most of them administered on average one course of antibiotic treatment per animal (>62%). In the MED region, the main sources of information on alternative treatments were veterinarians (>60%) and the Internet (>32%). In the NWE region, it was other farmers for producers including ruminant species (>63%) and veterinarians (>77%) for monogastric farmers. In the NWE region, direct commercialisation and through a cooperative and/or food industry were the most frequent channel used; while, in the MED region, they were the food industry and/or direct commercialisation. In conclusion, this survey provides novel cross-European insights into organic livestock producers' concerns. A particular value of the survey is that MED countries, which are often underrepresented, were well sampled.

A smooth transition phase is the key for optimal dairy cows' performance and reduced antibiotics use. Therefore, the objective of our Our study was to compare the effect of an antibiotic growth promoter and a nutraceutical bolus, onhealth, colostrum, milk production, and profitability in transition dairy cows. Seventy-five animals blocked by parity, previous milk yield, lactation length, and body condition score (BCS) were assigned in a randomised design to 1 of 3 groups: control (CON; N = 26) receiving no treatment; monensin (MON; N = 27) receiving, a slow-releasing intraruminal bolus of sodic monensin at −20 d relative to expected calving; nutraceutical (ECS; N = 22) receiving, at −5 d before the expected calving an intraruminal bolus of Echinacea purpurea dry extract, vitamin E, l-carnitine and Silybum marianum released within 24h. Colostrum yield and density were recorded; its composition and immunoglobulins content were analysed. Every 20 days BCS was recorded; individual milk yield was recorded daily until 70DIM and monthly thereafter until 305 DIM. Milk quality was tested monthly. An economic evaluation until 70DIM was performed. Colostrum and Δ BCS were analysed by analysis of covariance. Economics and BCS were analysed with ANOVA, and milk yield and quality with ANOVA for repeated measures. The MON and ECS had lower colostrum protein and His, Arg, Ala, Met, Val and Ile content, and in higher milk yield until 35 (ECS) and 70 (MON) DIM compared to the CON. A trend for a higher partial income was observed for MON and ECS compared to the CON group, suggesting a positive impact of the treatments. This study evaluated the effectiveness of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in predicting faecal fibre, protein fractions and total tract apparent digestibility in dairy sheep and goats fed varying ratios of alfalfa-hay and concentrate. A total of 180 faecal samples from dairy sheep and goats were collected and chemically analysed. Faecal samples underwent also NIRS spectral acquisition and calibration models were obtained through modified partial least square regression and tested for robustness. The NIRS provided excellent estimations for N and CP as % as is (R2ExV 0.91 and 0.91, RPD 3.16 and 3.33, respectively), good estimation for N, CP and ND soluble CP % DM (R2ExV 0.90, 0.90 and 0.85, RPD 3.14, 2.90 and 2.48) and ND soluble CP expressed as % as is (R2ExV 0.87, RPD 2.55), approximative quantitative prediction for acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP) and ADIN % acid detergent fibre (ADF) (R2ExV 0.79 and 0.71, RPD 1.93 and 1.78, respectively) and ADICP as % as is (R2ExV 0.67, RPD 1.70) but resulted to be less effective when predicting all the other components. The prediction models for total-tract digestibility (ttD) of ADICP performed best among the developed equations (R2ExV 0.57, RPD 1.38), but the model was not sufficient for precise predictions, suggesting a good capacity of NIRS to predict faecal N excretion but also intrinsic limitations of faecal spectra due to the partial residual nutrients content, compared to the diet. Increasing the number of calibration samples and values, the forage species, and the F:C ratios in the diet offered to the animals could improve the NIRS performance. The study aimed to explore the connection between horses' total tract apparent dry matter digestibility (ttaDMD) of various roughages and faecal particle size (FPS), to develop a tool to rank roughage digestibility. Six horses, varying in size and breed, were fed six distinct roughages (four cuts of fescue, perennial ryegrass/clover mix, and straw). Each feeding period lasted 16 days, with a 14-day adaptation phase. Faecal samples underwent wet sieving analysis. Roughage chemical composition was evaluated using NIRs. Faecal and roughage acid insoluble ash content were used to estimate ttaDMD and FPS was determined by wet sieving using a set of 6 sieves of different mesh sizes (S1 to S6; 6.50, 4.50, 2.36, 1.18, 0.6 and 0.15 mm respectively). The effects of roughage ttaDMD on FPS across sieves were analysed using GLM. Linear regressions and correlations were performed between faecal residues on each sieve and mesh sizes of the sieves to create a mathematical tool to rank ttaDMD based on FPS distribution. Increased ttaDMD was associated with larger FPS, with perennial ryegrass/clover mix (ttaDMD 74.44%) and straw (ttaDMD 44.57%) resulting in smaller and larger faecal particles respectively. Correlations were observed between ttaDMD, S1 and S2 (r = 0.639 and 0.668; p ≤ 0.001). The angular coefficient of the linear function between faecal residues on each sieve support the idea to estimate roughages digestibility from FPS (R2 = 0.4153). Consequently, determining faecal residues across sieves of varying mesh sizes could serve as an indirect method for ranking roughages digestibility. Essential oils (EOs) and nature identical compounds (NICs) express different antimicrobial activity (AAc) which can be affected by variability in composition, stability over time, and the carrier employed for their inclusion in feedstuff and products for animal treatments. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the stability over time of the AAc of 8 EOs and 5 NICs, alone and in combination with Tween 20, on four major bacterial livestock pathogens (E. coli, S. Typhimurium, S. aureus and MRSA). For this purpose, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and checkerboard assay (CkA) tests were performed on EOs and NICs at batch first use (T0 – only MIC), and after 12 (T1) and 24 (T2) months. Several EOs showed initial MICs lower than 2% (v/v) and, except for clove bud and cinnamon EOs, reduced their efficacy over time. The best NICs' AAc was showed at T1 by cinnamic aldehyde (against MRSA), carvacrol (against E. coli), and thymol (except against MRSA), while at T2 the MIC values decreased for most of the NICs. The CkA between EOs and Tween 20 showed different interactions (Fractional Inhibitory Concentration -FIC- index from 0.06 to 32.04) based on bacteria and time. No interactions were found between NICs and Tween 20 (FIC index from 1.0 to 3.0). The AAc of EOs and NICs changes over time. Therefore, the preservation interval of these additives is critical for the AAc of feedstuff and products intended for livestock animals. Moreover, the NICs seem more suitable for the association with Tween 20. Data about diet and digestion process of cattle are important for the fine-tuning of the diet and from an environmental point of view. Given the capacity of the near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to provide easily, quickly and cheap data its ability in predicting dietary and faecal chemical composition, fibre-bound N and total-tract apparent digestibility (ttaD) of beef cattle were tested. The ttaD was estimated using the dietary and faecal undigestible neutral detergent fibre (uNDF) as an internal marker. A total of 172 pool faecal samples and 164 total mixed ration (TMR) samples were randomly collected 24 h post-feeding across the fattening groups of young males and females Charolaise beef cattle. Both TMR and faeces were analysed chemically and through visible/NIRS instrument. Calibration models were developed using a modified partial least squares (mPLS) regression analysis and tested by a leave-one-out cross-validation procedure and the best calibrations were selected based on various parameters including the coefficient of determination of calibration (R2CrV) and the residual predictive deviation (RPD). The overall composition of TMR and faeces were similar to that reported in literature and the coefficient of variation was higher than 12% for most of the parameters studied. The NIRS was able to accurately predict the ADF, nitrogen (N), and ash content in the TMR, whereas in faeces only the ADF prediction was acceptable. The ttaD and total-tract true digestibility of N using the uNDF as an internal marker were inaccurately predicted both in TMR and in faeces (R2CrV ≤0.66; RPD ≤ 1.71).Highlights Near-infrared spectroscopy was not a suitable technology to predict total tract apparent digestibility. NIRS was able to accurately predict the ADF, nitrogen and ash content in the TMR. NIRS was able to accurately predict the ADF in faeces.

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of mid-infrared (MIR; 5000–900 cm−1) and visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR; 400–2500 nm) spectroscopy to discriminate organic (ORG) from conventional (CONV) bulk milk. Samples (n = 225) from 24 farms (ORG, n = 12; CONV, n = 12) located in the same area, mainly rearing Holstein-Friesian cows, under similar management conditions, except for ORG livestock spending a period of time on pasture, were collected from September 2019 to August 2020. Chemical composition of the lactation ration was similar between groups. Mid-infrared and Vis/NIR spectrum of each sample were collected. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were done using R software. For the PLS-DA, records were divided in a train set (8 farms/group) and a test set (4 farms/group), and only wavelengths with VIP >1 were retained. The PCA was not able to discriminate both groups. The PLS-DA revealed an accuracy of the model in the test set of 54.1% and 62.9%, for MIR and Vis/NIR, respectively. In conclusion, both infrared regions performed similarly, and the moderate accuracy of the PLS-DA could be related to the similarity of the selected farms between both categories.Highlights Infrared spectra from bulk milk samples of organic and conventional farms were similar. Aim of the study was to investigate the oxidative status during peripartum period in mares fed high amount of dietary α-tocopherol. α-Tocopherol, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) levels were measured in blood samples from 17 Thoroughbred mares at three intervals: (1) 20 days before the expected foaling date; (2) 12 h following parturition; (3) 7 days post-partum. The levels of α-tocopherol, d-ROMs and FRAP were retrospectively analysed in relation to the number of insemination services (Ins) after foaling performed per conception. The parameters α-tocopherol and d-ROMs evidenced minimal fluctuations during peripartum period while FRAP levels showed a linear decrease. The α-tocopherol did not show significant variations and was numerically higher in mares >10 years old while FRAP levels were significantly higher in older mares in the post-partum. Mares receiving three natural insemination services showed higher levels of FRAP in the pre-partum period (p = .009) and lower values of α-tocopherol (p = .015) in the postpartum compared to mares receiving one service. No d-ROMs level differences appeared among service classes. Oxidative stress is not present in periparturient mares fed 2.750 IU of supplementary α-tocopherol. Differences in redox metabolism are detectable between young and old mares. Plasma antioxidant potential is higher in older mares particularly in the post-partum period.Highlights Oxidative stress is not present in periparturient mares fed 2.750 IU of supplementary α-tocopherol. We evaluated the effects of different levels of biotin on broilers performances and bone growth. Biotin was added at concentrations of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 μg/Kg to a corn and soybean diet for yellow skin broiler production during the whole production cycle. Biotin at dosages of 200, 300, 400 μg/Kg increased growth rate, and, regardless of dosage, feed conversion rate in the second and third period of growth. Femur and tibiotarsus volume was slightly reduced while the bone mineral content of the same bones showed an increase as a result of biotin supplementation. Any particular dose-response effect was recorded with regard to plasma mineral content and ALP activity.

An observational study was conducted on three northern Italy Holstein dairy herds to evaluate the impact of milk fat depression (MFD, defined as milk fat lower than 3.2) on milk production and fatty acids (FA) composition in order to investigate the practical consequences and the possible origin of this phenomenon. The diet composition and the individual milk production and composition, were monitored during the first six months of lactation. Two virtual groups were created in each farm on the basis of the milk fat levels observed during the first two months of lactation (higher or lower than 3.2). Individual milk samples were taken from 16 animals /group/farm for composition and fatty acid analysis. The diet of Farm A, characterized by the highest average prevalence of MFD (33.1%), showed the highest acidogenic attitude (high NFC, low NDF, low peNDF8). The milk fat level differed significantly per group over time in all farms. Cattle with MFD showed tendentially lower energy corrected milk output and greater concentrations of C12:0÷C15:0, C18:1trans10, total polyunsaturated, total odd chain (OCFA), total n-6 as well as OCFA/branched chain fatty acids, and C18:1trans10/C18:1trans11 ratios. Farm A milk fat showed higher values of C12:0, C13:0, C14:0 and C15:0. It appears that MFD cattle are characterized by lower mammary energy output and a milk FA profile similar to cattle fed acidogenic diets, thus suggesting an alteration in the rumen fermentation patterns, as occurs in acidotic cattle.

An observational study was conducted on 18 dairy farms located in the area of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese production with the aim to supply some recommendations regarding the more efficient TMR physical form. The effects of TMR particle size distributions on digestion process and on dairy productivity were investigated. Lower particle size appeared to improve digestion process and resulted in increased DMI, milk yield, and milk casein level without affecting milk fat. Routinary TMR particle size measurement with PSPS could be a good practice to standardize TMR particle size distribution and to maximize DMI and dairy productivity.

“In vitro” Dry Matter (IVDMD) and fiber degradability (IVNDFD) dynamics were determined for Total Mixed Rations (TMR) typical of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese area. The same parameters were estimated on some of these ration also “in vivo” on a group of fresh cows. “In vivo” trial showed values of 62.21 and 44.82% for DMD and NDFD respectively, while average IVDMD was 67.48 and 74.33% at 24 and 48 hours respectively. At the same intervals IVNDFD was of 49.32 and 62.61%, indicating an high fiber digestibility of fresh cow. Based on the “in vitro” equations and the “in vivo” values, the ruminal retention time was estimated to be of about 21 hours for DMD and of 19 hours for NDFD.

In swine production, the economic gain in the farrowing room corresponds to the number of weaned piglets/sow per year. Pre-weaning mortality is at least 11-13% of total losses within one herd, considering a previous 7-8% of the stillbirths. Piglet crushing by the sow contributes significantly to the overall piglet mortality. It is caused by multiple factors related to the sow, the piglet and due to modern swine husbandry along the last 50 years. This study aimed to compare three different designs of farrowing crates during the first three days of life in relation to piglet-crushing mortality in intensive herd. One hundred fifty-eight sows with spontaneous deliveries were housed in the following farrowing crates groups: group A (n=51) farrowing within conventional crates, group B (n=47) farrowing within the slide cage and group C (n=60) in the up and down designed, for a total of 2487 live born piglets. In the first three days of life, group C reported the lower crushing mortality rate (0.54%), while groups B and A reported 2.37% and 5.46%, respectively. The comparison between the group C value compared with group A values (p<.001; Chi-square=36.90) and B (p=.003; Chi-square=8.81) were statistically significant. In conclusion, the approach to create more space for both mother and litter within an acceptable size of farrowing crates (slide cage and up & down designed) allowed a significant reduction in mortality crushing rate of the piglets during the first three days of life. The overall objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of 2 carriers (Silica, SIL, and Tween 80, T80) and their interaction with 8 phytochemicals (PCs), on in vitro dry matter and neutral detergent fibre digestibility (DMD, NDFD) of 3 substrates commonly used as feed for dairy cattle (soybean meal, maize meal and total mixed ration –TMR). A total of eight PCs were tested: 4 essential oils (EO) - cinnamon oil (CIN), clove oil (CLO), thyme oil (THY) and oregano oil (ORE) - and 4 essential oil active compounds (EOAC) - cinnamaldehyde (CIN-AC), eugenol (EUG), thymol (THY-AC) and carvacrol (CAR). A positive control with carrier and no PCs was tested for each substrate (CRR). Each PC was tested at 0.5 mg L−1 of medium on DMD and NDFD in an in vitro batch fermentation system. The incubation was performed twice at the intervals of 4 (DMD4, NDFD4) and 24 (DMD24, NDFD24) h. The PCs effect was significant on maize meal and soybean meal DMD24. The carrier’s effect was significant on soybean meal DMD24, indicating a depressive effect of T80 on soybean meal. The PC-carrier interactions were significant on both DMD and NDFD of the tested substrates, except for maize meal and soybean meal DMD24. The PCs-SIL combinations generally increased digestibility while the combination with T80 exerted positive effect only on maize DMD4. The PC-carrier combinations variably affect digestibility of different substrates and these interactions should be considered both for their scientific and commercial implications.HIGHLIGHTS PC-Carrier interactions affect in vitro digestibility. In general, the PC-SIL combinations increase digestibility while those with Tween 80 exert depressing effect. The PC-Carrier effect is variable depending on the degraded substrate.

Biotin deficiency in the broilers' diet causes reduction of growth rate and food conversion, clinically the appearance of cutaneous lesions that are particularly severe around the beak and in the plantar regions, and long bone deformities (Anderson and Warnich, 1970; Riddel, 1981; Bain et al., 1989). It has been demonstrated that 21-day old chicks fed biotin deficient diets showed thickening of the tibiotarsus cortex. (Watkins et al., 1989). In order to avoid nutritional disorders and to ensure the “optimal” dosage, broiler biotin requirements are still undefined.
