Based on the materials of expert and attribution studies carried out by the author over the years, this article examines the historical and archival documents, evidence and facts used in the course of the examination and attribution of works of easel, theatrical and decorative art of Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947). Also, the author examines the role which documents from the funds of the departments of manuscripts of the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art, the Central State Archive of Film and Photographic Documents of St Petersburg, and other institutions play in the examination process, which is important for clarifying and studying the artistic heritage of the master. The purpose of the article is to consider individual examples of the examination and attribution of N. K. Roerich’s works with the help of various kinds of historical, cultural, and everyday documents, facts, and evidence reflected in unpublished art history texts, epistolary and memoir sources, in inscriptions on the reverse of paintings and on the margins of typographic prints of exhibition catalogues and works of art by Roerich, i.e. everything that contains important information for an expert included in the concept of “historical and archival aspects”. The article provides examples of art history, culturological and technical and technological methods used in the examination and attribution of works of art, and their result, which is reflected in the “expert conclusions”, attributions, verified and refined description of works and the history of their existence, which is important for understanding the artist’s work, further analysis of his work and, as a result, the emergence of new scholarly and educational publications., В статье, основанной на материалах экспертных и атрибуционных исследований, проводимых автором на протяжении разных лет, рассматриваются историко-архивные документы, свидетельства и факты, использованные в ходе проведения экспертизы и атрибуций произведений станкового и театрально-декорационного искусства Николая Константиновича Рериха (1874–1947), а также выявляется роль и значение для экспертизы документов из фондов отделов рукописей Государственного Русского музея, Государственной Третьяковской галереи, Российского государственного архива литературы и искусства, Центрального государственного архива кинофотофонодокументов Санкт-Петербурга и других учреждений, что имеет значение для уточнения и изучения художественного наследия мастера. Цель статьи состоит в рассмотрении отдельных примеров проведения экспертизы и атрибуций произведений Н. К. Рериха с помощью разного рода историко-культурных и бытовых документов, фактов и свидетельств, получивших отражение в опубликованных и неопубликованных искусствоведческих текстах, эпистолярных и мемуарных источниках, в надписях на оборотах картин и на полях типографских оттисков выставочных каталогов и произведений искусства Рериха, т. е. всего того, что содержит важную для эксперта информацию, входящую в понятие «историко-архивные аспекты». В статье приведены примеры искусствоведческих, культурологических и технико-технологических методов, применяемых при проведении экспертизы и атрибуций художественных произведений, и их результат, получивший отражение в «заключениях эксперта», атрибуциях, в выверенном и уточненном описании произведений и истории их бытования, что имеет важное значение для понимания искусства художника, дальнейшего анализа его творчества и, как следствие, появления новых научных и просветительских изданий.

This article deals with the relevant issue of interaction between an art historian and an expert in the context of stylistic and technological studies of the work of eighteenth-century artist Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov. The reason for turning to the issue is a new attribution of two ceremonial portraits of Catherine the Great (1763, State Tretyakov Gallery, Pavlovsk State Museum) proposed by specialists of the Tretyakov Gallery — I. E. Lomize, a technologist expert, and N. G. Presnova, an art historian, in 2016. As a result of an in-depth comprehensive study, the portraits which were previously considered undisputed works created by Rokotov were attributed to the artist’s studio. The results of the research were unexpected, sensational, and broke stereotypes in the perception of the artist’s creative path. In this regard, there was a need to re-evaluate and reconsider the established traditional ideas about the artist and his works. Based on disparate material, i.e. published archival data, art research, and catalogues of monographic exhibitions (1923, 1925, 1960, 2016, 2020), the author analyses the main stages and approaches in the study of portraits of Catherine the Great. Taking into account the latest data of the comprehensive study, the author identifies issues of scholarly interest. Attention is focused on the study of the relationship between the artist and his studio, distinguishing originals from copies, considering different versions of the commissioners of the ceremonial portraits. Also, the author reveals the significance and role of an art critic and an expert in the study of works of art. The article concludes that there is a need to continue the productive dialogue between critics and experts and comprehensively study the artist’s oeuvre to shape a more objective history of the Russian painting of the second half of the eighteenth century., В статье рассматривается актуальная проблема взаимодействия историка искусства и эксперта в контексте стилистических и технологических исследований творчества художника XVIII в. Федора Степановича Рокотова. Поводом обращения к ней послужила новая атрибуция двух парадных портретов Екатерины II (1763, ГТГ, ГМЗ «Павловск»), предложенная специалистами Третьяковской галереи — экспертом-технологом И. Е. Ломизе и искусствоведом Н. Г. Пресновой в 2016 г. Портреты, считавшиеся ранее бесспорной авторской работой, в результате углубленного комплексного исследования были отнесены к мастерской художника. Результаты экспертизы стали неожиданными, ломающими восприятие творческого пути художника. В связи с этим возникла необходимость в интерпретации экспертных исследований, а также в переоценке и перепроверке устоявшихся традиционных представлений о художнике и его произведениях. На основе разрозненного материала — опубликованных архивных данных, искусствоведческих исследований, каталогов монографических выставок (1923, 1960, 2016, 2020) и самих живописных произведений — проанализированы основные этапы и подходы в изучении портретов Екатерины II. Учитывая последние данные комплексного исследования, выделяются вопросы, представляющие научный интерес. Внимание автора сосредоточено на исследовании взаимоотношений художника и его мастерской, разграничении оригинала и копийных произведений, рассмотрении разных версий о заказчиках парадных портретов. Также выявлено значение и определена роль историка искусства и эксперта в исследовании художественных произведений. Делается вывод о необходимости продолжения продуктивного диалога экспертов и искусствоведов и дальнейшего комплексного изучения творчества художника для формирования более объективного представления об истории русской живописи второй половины XVIII в.

This article considers issues of attribution and provenance of a sculpture of the Hindu goddess Durga found in one of the Ural gold-bearing mines in around 1850 near the city Troitsk, Orenburg Province. This fact was recorded in Zapiski Ural’skogo Obshchestva Lyubitelei Estestvoznaniya, the most famous 19th century Ural scientific journal. In the journal, the artifact was identified as “a Buddhist idol” and described in detail by O. E. Kler, chairman of the Ural Society of Natural Sciences Amateurs. Additionally, the journal published a photograph of the sculpture and preliminary analysis of the composition of metal of the sculpture was carried out. In 1876, the sculpture was exhibited in St Petersburg during a congress of orientalists. Presently, the whereabouts of the sculpture are unknown.Except for providing a more detailed iconography, the article contains arguments about the time and place of its creation (the Himalaya region of India, 11th–14th centuries) and the main versions regarding how the sculpture came to the Urals. The author provides arguments supporting the idea that the sculpture arrived in Russia fairly early in history through the trade routes of the Caspian Sea and along the Volga, Kama, and Ural Rivers used for the transportation of oriental goods. In this way, the author considers issues of cross-cultural connections and exchange of artistic ideas between countries having no common borders in the vast territory of Eurasia in the times of antiquity and the Middle Ages, providing a number of examples of the “remarkable discovery” of oriental artefacts very far in the north of Eurasia. For the time being, a detailed study of the Durga sculpture found not far from the town of Troitsk, Orenburg Province in the 19th century is impossible, but it is important that this material be actualised as it may help find it in Russian or foreign collections in the future., Статья посвящена вопросам атрибуции и провенанса скульптуры индуистской богини Дурги, найденной на одном из золотоносных приисков Урала в 1850 г. возле города Троицка Оренбургской губернии. Этот факт был зафиксирован в самом известном научном издании Урала XIX в. — «Записках Уральского общества любителей естествознания», на страницах которого данный артефакт был идентифицирован как «буддийский идол» и очень подробно описан председателем УОЛЕ О. Е. Клером, была опубликована фотография предмета, сделан предварительный анализ состава металла скульптуры. В 1876 г. скульптура экспонировалась в Санкт-Петербурге во время Съезда ориенталистов. На данный момент местонахождение скульптуры неизвестно.Кроме уточненной иконографии, в статье сделаны предположения о времени и месте ее создания (предгималайский регион Индии, XI–XIV вв.) и рассматриваются основные версии ее попадания на Урал. Автор приводит доводы в пользу раннего попадания скульптуры на территорию Урала через торговые пути, пролегавшие по Каспийскому морю и обеспечивавшие дальнейшее продвижение восточных товаров по бассейнам рек Волга — Кама и Урал. Тем самым автор затрагивает вопросы кросс-культурных связей и обмена художественными идеями между странами, не имевшими общих границ на обширной территории Евразии во времена древности и Средневековья, приводятся несколько примеров «удивительных находок» восточных артефактов далеко на севере Евразии. Детальное исследование скульптуры богини Дурги, найденной недалеко от г. Троицка Оренбургской губернии в XIX в., на данный момент не представляется возможным, однако актуализация этого материала важна, так как может способствовать ее обнаружению среди российских или зарубежных коллекций в будущем.
