The article focuses on "Dance II", a mural which was created in 1909 by French painter Henri Matisse for a wealthy Russian textile merchant named Sergei Ivanovich Shchukin. A discussion of the impact Matisse's art had on French society, and on moral and ethical concerns which Shchukin had about placing a Matisse mural in his mansion, is presented. Matisse's inspiration for the mural, which is similar to another mural which he painted which is located within the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, is discussed.
