Abstract

The article presents a medical study examining the plasma HIV RNA level to predict and determine the rate of CD4 T-cell depletion in individuals with untreated HIV infection. Two groups of HIV-infected persons in the U.S. were studied, with observations beginning in May 1984 and ending in August 2004. The study found that higher HIV RNA levels were connected to a larger CD4 cell loss. However, the study concludes that HIV RNA levels only minimally predicts the rate of CD4 cell depletion in untreated individuals.
