To the Editor.— Victims of crucifixion frequently died of rupture of the myocardium with a resultant pericardial tamponade. The Roman soldiers were not likely to puncture the bladder, as Dr. Crosby suggests, but were experts with the short sword and lance in seeking unerringly the heart itself. The pooled blood having separated in the pericardial sac resulted in the emission of the Biblical "blood and water."
