汽水湖尾駮沼におけるアマモ場の水平分布および資源量に関する調査を2004年6月から2005年4月に至る期間, 航空写真の画像解析と潜水調査の両面から実施した。アマモ (Zostera marina) およびコアマモ (Zostera japonica) の2種のアマモ類の植生が確認された。両種の分布水域を調査した結果, アマモは湖岸の水深約1～1.5mの等深線に沿って, 細長く帯状の分布状況が確認された。一方, コアマモは, 水深約0.5m以浅の砂泥質域においてパッチ状の分布状況が確認された。アマモ場 (アマモおよびコアマモ) 群落の総面積は約0.08km2で, これは尾駮沼の湖面積の約2%に相当する。底質における有機物含量がアマモ場の分布を支配する重要な要因であることが示唆された。また, 尾駮沼全体におけるアマモ場の総資源量 (葉部と根部の和) は, 一年のうちで6月に最大値 (約72t) を, 4月に最小値 (約22t) をそれぞれ示した。約30～40年前の尾駮沼全体におけるアマモ場の総資源量と比較した結果, 日本国内の多くの沿岸水域で観測されているような減少状況は認められなかった。

青森県の汽水湖尾駮沼に生息するウネナシトマヤガイと考えられている種と中海に生息しているウネナシトマヤガイを比較すると,成貝の最大個体サイズが大きく異なると共に,殻の殻幅/殻長比や表面の模様などの形態的特徴にも相違がみとめられる。尾駮沼に生息する種と中海に生息する種の遺伝的変異が同一種の範囲内にあるか,否かの確認をアイソザイム多型分析により,遺伝子分化の観点から検討した。尾駮沼個体群および中海個体群からAAT,ACP,CK,FDH,FUM,αGPD,IDH,LAP,MDH,ME,PGMおよびSODの12種のマーカー酵素を検出し,対立遺伝子頻度,平均ヘテロ接合率(H),遺伝的類似度(1)および遺伝的距離(D)を求めた。両個体群における遺伝的分化の程度を判定した結果,両個体群はそれぞれ独自の遺伝子プールを持っているものの,種が異なるほどの遺伝的分化は認められず,両湖沼に生息するウネナシトマヤガイは同種の範囲内にあると判断された。

青森県下北半島の太平洋側中央部に位置する汽水湖尾駮沼における動物プランクトンの出現特性を2001年4月から2004年3月に至る期間,沼奥部および湖心部の2地点において調査した。沼奥部および湖心部における動物プランクトンの平均出現個体密度はそれぞれ5.4×104および3.4×104個体m-3であり,その季節変動は両地点ともに春季および秋季にピークが観測された。調査期間において出現が確認された分類群は45であり,その優占はカイアシ亜綱(Acartia hudsonica,ハルパクチクス目およびポエキロストム目),そして多毛綱,腹足綱,二枚貝綱およびフジツボ亜目の幼生であった。また,冬季にはワムシ綱の出現する割合が大きくなる傾向が認められた。動物プランクトンの出現個体密度および分類群構成を沼奥部と湖心部との問で比較した結果,両地点間の差異は小さかった。

尾駮沼は,使用済核燃料再処理施設等の原子力サイクル施設が隣接する汽水湖である。使用済み核燃料再処理施設が稼働する前の汽水湖尾駮沼における湖底堆積物中の放射性核種(238U,137Cs,40K)及び安定元素(Mn,A1,Co,Ba)の濃度レベル及び地理的分布を把握するために調査を行った結果,以下のことが明らかになった。1)元素によって高濃度の分布が観測された水域が異なり,東西に細長い水域で濃度が高い元素(238U,137Cs,40K及びMn)と二又川河口水域で濃度が高い元素(Al,Co及びBa)の2つに大別された。2)堆積物中における238U及び137Csの濃度は,水深の大きい水域ほど高い傾向が認められた。3)湖水中の238U及び137Csの濃度と塩分との間には正の高い相関関係(r=0.95及び0.89)が認められ,堆積物中の238U及び137Csの主な供給源は,海洋であると判断された。一方,Al,Ba及びCoの濃度は,二又川河口水域を中心に高く,太平洋側へ向かうほど低くなっていることから,主な供給源は陸域であると判断された。4)238U及び137Csの濃度が高い堆積物の粒度組成は,粒径0.075mm以下が50%以上を占めるシルト状であり,しかも強熱減量が14～16%と有機物含有量が多かった。これらから,238U及び137Csの堆積物における蓄積は,堆積物の粒径及び物理化学的性状が大きく関与しているものと考えられる。

The seasonal variation of nitrate in the upper layer in the brackish Lake Nakanoumi has been investigated by the analysis of the data collected monthly during the period of 1976-1986. Upward trends in nitrate concentration were found in the colder season (January to March), and also in the rainy season (July). In contrast to nitrate, chlorinity decreased at the same time.A significant negative correlation between nitrate concentration and chlorinity in the surface water in Lake Nakanoumi was found in January, February, March and July. In addition, from the analysis of the correlation between the increment of nitrate concentration in the surface water and cumulative rainfall, it was concluded that the accumulation of nitrate in the upper layer is mainly caused by discharge from the rivers into the lake through rainfall and melted snow.

Monthly surveys of phytoplankton occurrence were conducted from 1974 to 1986 at six stations in the brackish lake Nakanoumi. Both the numbers of phytoplankton cells and species tended to increase during the period when T-N concentration sharply increased, and decreased during the period when T-N concentration remained at the same level or gradually decreased.Among the four diversity indices for the phytoplankton community (i.e., Fatten, Shannon, Simpson and Margalef), only the Margalef index showed a highly positive correlation (coefficient > 0.7) with the yearly changes of the nutrient (T-P or T-N) concentration at some stations.

The relationships between the occurrence of phytoplankton and salinity or water temperature have been investigated for 8 years from 1979 to 1986 in brackish Lake Nakanoumi. Fourteen species such as Skeletonema costatum, Prorocentrum minimum and Cyclotella nana were dominant in this lake. Five among the 14 species bloomed in conditions of water temperature less than optimal for their growth, whereas every species bloomed in optimum salinity conditions. This fact indicates that the occurrence of dominant species in the lake is more strongly controlled by salinity than water temperature.The result of comparison of weighted mean value of water temperature and salinity for the two periods of 1974-1978 and 1979-1986 also indicated the greater importance of salinity than water temperature.

Since December 1968 the Nakanoumi Reclamation Project by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been in progress to expand farming lands covering a total area of 2800 ha. In 1980 it is scheduled to turn the remaining water basin of Lake Nakanoumi into a freshening reservoir to ensure irrigation water for the agricultural uses.The present article describes an epitome of prior investigations to forecast impacts of the freshening project on the lake environment.In recent years the state of the brackish water environment of Lake Nakanoumi has tended to be changed by the water quality deterioration intensified rapidly and the lake hydraulics which has been altered by the construction of dikes for enclosing newly reclaimed lands. Under such situation, the fact that analytical methods for quantifying a mass of data collected from field surveys have not been established makes it difficult to grasp precisely the tendency of lake environment.It is urgently important to establish practical methods of prior investigations capable of elucidating quantitatively the tendency of water environment from the viewpoint of assessing environmental impacts of large-scale development projects.

Factors controlling denitrification were investigated by the acetylene inhibition technique using epilimnetic sediment sample collected from the brackish lake Nakanoumi. Temperature and substrate concentrations (nitrite and nitrate) were important factors for controlling denitrification in sediments. Denitrification rate estimated from temperature and substrate concentration was about 12.0mg N·m-2 d-1 (August 1981). The decrease of total inorganic nitrogen concentration in hypolimnion from July to August 1981 was principally caused by nitrification denitrification. The capacity for the reductions of NO3- to N2 (N2O), NH4+, and organic nitrogen was also measured in 15NO3--amended epilimnetic sediment by the acetylene inhibition technique and the 15N-label tracer method. 15NH4+ and org.15N accounted for about 30% of the three products. The result suggested that the pathway of nitrate reduction to NH4+ and PON was important as well as denitrification in sediments of the brackish lake Nakanoumi.
