Aims: To compare nurses' non‐optimal eating behaviours across different shifts, to examine whether non‐day shifts were related to deviation from optimal dietary behaviours compared with day shifts and whether such deviation was related to non‐optimal macronutrient intake. Design: This is a 4‐day intensive longitudinal study. Methods: A convenience sample of hospital nurses was recruited in Taiwan. From September 2018 through January 2019, 120 participants completed 4‐days of 24‐h dietary recalls. One‐way ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis H test were used to compare differences in energy and macronutrient intake and frequency of meals and snacking, respectively. Generalized linear regressions examined (1) the associations between shiftwork schedules and non‐optimal eating behaviours and (2) associations between non‐optimal eating and high energy contribution of non‐optimal macronutrients. Results: Nurses consumed less energy on evening and night shifts compared with day shifts. However, energy intake from snacking was higher on evening and night shifts relative to day shifts. Nurses consumed less meals but had higher snacking frequency on non‐day shifts. In addition, high energy intake from snacking was positively associated with high energy intake from saturated fat. Conclusions: Nurses were more likely to have non‐optimal eating behaviours on non‐day shifts, which may contribute to an increased intake of saturated fat; thus, increasing their risk of chronic diseases. Strategies to improve non‐day shift nurses' non‐optimal eating behaviours may be beneficial to their health. Impact Shiftwork is known to affect nurses' eating behaviours; however, which shift is associated with unhealthy eating remains inconclusive. Despite lower energy intakes, nurses had higher intake by snacking on evening and night shifts. High snacking intake was associated with a high intake of saturated fat. Hospitals can increase the availability of healthy foods on evening or night shifts, which may improve non‐day shift nurses' non‐optimal eating behaviours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To explore the effects of preferred music therapy on peer attachment, depression, and salivary cortisol among early adolescents. Background: As adolescents enter puberty, they start to seek partnering relationships among peers. Peer attachment is central for adolescents and greatly influences their physical and psychological development. Design: A pre‐test‐posttest control group design. Methods: The data were collected from July ‐ October 2016. A total of 65 individuals were included. The treatment group received 40 min of music therapy twice per week over the course of 10 weeks. The control group maintained its typical routine. The research data were collected using structured questionnaires, including basic information, the Inventory of Peer Attachment, the Beck Depression Inventory‐II questionnaires, and salivary cortisol concentrations. Statistical analysis methods included percentages, chi‐square tests, t tests, analyses of covariance, and the Johnson–Neyman technique. Results: There were statistically significant differences in peer attachment, depression, and salivary cortisol levels in the music group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the findings showed that early adolescents with more severe depression experienced greater improvement through preferred music therapy. Conclusion: The results allude to the beneficial effects of receiving preferred music therapy in terms of the peer attachment, depression, and salivary cortisol levels of early adolescents. Adjustments should be made based on the characteristics of student groups to develop suitable and safe music therapy and to reduce the risks of poor mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Aims: To explore the level of and the association between, compassion satisfaction and fatigue of paediatric nurses; to determine the association between personality traits and compassion satisfaction and fatigue; to identify the determinants of compassion satisfaction and fatigue. Background: Paediatric nurses are prone to experiencing compassion fatigue associated with caring for children with illness and their families, yet its connection with nurses' personality traits remains unknown. Design: A cross‐sectional descriptive study design was used. Methods: The data collection used three instruments measuring socio‐demography, responses to the compassion satisfaction and fatigue test and the revised NEO personality inventory. The study used descriptive, correlation and multiple regression analysis for the data collected between April ‐ July 2014. Results: From 173 female paediatric nurses, two‐thirds worked in critical care units and indicated a satisfactory level of compassion satisfaction and a low level of compassion fatigue, despite a lack of association between the two concepts. Four determinants—agreeableness, extraversion, conscientiousness and engaging with outdoor activities—were predictive and explained 43.6% of total variance of compassion satisfaction. Two risk factors of compassion fatigue identified were less emotional stability and singlehood (marital status) and these explained 26.1% of total variance of compassion fatigue. Conclusion: Support for improving agreeableness and emotional stability in paediatric nurses' workplaces including involvement in the outdoor activities and an increase in social connection may enhance compassion satisfaction and prevent exhaustive compassion fatigue. Journal of Advanced Nursing 67(9), 2200-2208. Abstract Aim. This article is a report of a study of the differences in maternal-foetal attachment and maternal-infant attachment among naturally pregnant and infertility-treated pregnant women in Taiwan. Background. Studies have shown that infertility treatment is likely to make up an increasing proportion in the coming years. As these experiences are unique, the attachment relationship may be affected. Method. The research data were collected from two obstetrics clinics which were located in central Taiwan. In 2008, all participants ( n = 125) were asked to fill out the prenatal questionnaires at the beginning of the study and were followed up with postnatal questionnaires that were mailed to them 1-2 months after labour ( n = 110). We used chi-square tests for categorical and t- tests for continuous variables. Multivariate analysis of variances was then performed, and changes in the maternal-foetal attachment and maternal-infant attachment Scales were assessed. Findings. Women who became pregnant after fertility treatment had higher maternal-foetus and maternal-infant attachment scores, and this result was statistically significant; pregnancy mode and level of education are the main factors that have a significant effect on maternal-foetus attachment; and pregnancy mode and participation in prenatal education have a main effect on maternal-infant attachment. Conclusion. Development of a specific support group for mothers, such as a group for prenatal education, and providing useful resources for pregnant women with a lower level of education are involved in the future research studies for therapeutic intervention.
