Objective. This research was guided by a stress and support model to examine the effects of frontline workers' background characteristics, personal stressors, job-related stressors, and workplace support on satisfaction with supervision. Method. Survey data were collected from 644 workers in 49 long-term-care settings that employed them. Regression analysis were used to determine the effects of worker level and then Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) and organizational factors on the outcome. Results. Although all four variable categories made significant contributions to explaining satisfaction with supervision, the most powerful were personal stressors and job-related stressors. Results from HLM analysis showed frontline workers in nursing homes and those employed in for-profit organizations had lower levels of satisfaction with supervision. Discussion. Findings suggest organizational interventions to address workers' financial and health issues and management practices such as better training programs and peer mentoring could enhance workers' satisfaction with supervision.

Objectives: This study addresses the following question: What characteristics of urban, noninstitutionalized elders predict which individuals are most likely to remain independent of personal assistance during a 2-year observation period?, Methods: A population-based sample of 602 noninstitutionalized urban residents aged 70 and older was followed for 2 years., Results: Ninety-eight of the 487 survivors remained independent. Factors associated with sustained independence were relatively younger age, male gender, fewer medical conditions, good physical function, and nonsmoking. The attitudes "favors family or self over agency assistance" and "does not expect filial obligation" were also independently associated., Discussion: The results are consistent with previous studies of successful aging and show that attitudes expressed at baseline favoring personal independence are associated with sustained autonomy during a period of at least 2 years.

This research examines the role that relationship and household arrangement have in explaining the levels of care-related stress effects experienced by spouse and adult-child caregivers in shared and separate residences. Data from 180 spouse and adult-child caregivers were analyzed to identify differences in caregiver health decline, relationship strain, and activity restriction across these settings when the effects of elder impairment, caregiver age, and use of social supports are controlled. Results show that spouse and adult children in shared households experience similar levels of care-related strain. However, comparison of adult children in shared and separate households show considerable cross-setting differences in strain, with those in shared households having significantly greater activity restriction but less relationship strain. These findings have implications for the delivery of social services, specifically for targeting health monitoring, respite, and family counseling services.
