The present study investigated the effect of nitrogen fertilization (NF) at the levels of 0, 45, and 90 kg·ha -1 combined with selected sulfur complex fertilization (SCF) levels of 0 and 45 kg·ha -1 on the nutritional and technological characteristics of buckwheat flour from five varieties. The results showed that the genotype was a critical factor affecting the chemical composition and physicochemical properties of buckwheat flour. NF significantly increased protein, total starch, and amylose content as well as mineral composition but decreased particle size, color value, and water hydration properties. However, SCF enhanced the ash content and decreased the protein content but had no significant effect on the pasting temperature. In addition, the combination of NF and SCF significantly reduced granule size, water solubility, viscosity, and rheological properties with increasing fertilization levels. This study can guide the cultivation of buckwheat with the desired physicochemical properties and provide information for buckwheat-based products in the food industry.

In brewing practice, the use of the appropriate hop variety is essential to produce consistent and high-quality beers. Yet, hop batches of the same variety cultivated in different geographical regions can display significant biochemical differences, resulting in specific taste- and aroma-related characteristics in beer. In this study, we illustrate the complementarity of genetic and biochemical fingerprinting methods to fully characterize hop batches. Using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), a set of 1 830 polymorphic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers generated 48 unique genetic fingerprints for a collection of 56 commercial hop varieties. Three groups of varieties, consisting of somaclonal variants, could not be further differentiated using this set of markers. Biochemical marker information offered added value to characterize hop samples from a given variety grown at different geographical locations. We demonstrate the power of combining genetic and biochemical fingerprints for quality control of hop batches in the brewing industry.

This study estimated exposure to multiple mycotoxins in 249 infants aged between 6 and 12 months in three agro-ecological zones of Tanzania. Maize-based complementary food intakes were estimated using two 24 h dietary recalls. Using @Risk software, probabilistic exposure assessment was conducted by modeling maize intake data (kg/kg body weight/day) with previously determined multiple mycotoxin (except for ochratoxin A (OTA) and zearalenone (ZEA), present in only a few samples) contamination data (μg/kg) in maize. Maize intakes ranged from 0.13 to 185 g/child/day (average = 59 ± 36 g/child/day). The estimated mean exposures were higher for aflatoxins (6-fold), fumonisins (3-fold), and deoxynivalenol (2-fold) than health-based guidance values of 0.017 ng/kg body weight/day, 2 μg/kg body weight/day, and 1 μg/kg body weight/day, respectively. The population at risk of exposures above the limits of health concern ranged from 12% for HT-2 toxin through 35% for deoxynivalenol to 100% for aflatoxins. The exposure varied among the agro-ecological zones. Strategies targeting multiple mycotoxins in maize are urgently needed to minimize exposures in Tanzania.

Tank-mix adjuvants can increase the overall performance of plant protection products. Their most important ways of action are the improved retention, spreading, wetting, and penetration of the pesticide on the target and the reduction of fine droplets. In this paper, deposition and spreading of the systemic fungicide propiconazole on triticale ears were quantified. A better deposition and spreading of fungicide on the ear may be a possible help for the Fusarium problem in triticale, wheat, and other cereals. Triticale ears were applied with propiconazole in combination with 11 different tank-mix adjuvants. Vegetable oil, alcohol ethoxylates, lactate ester, trisiloxanes, and an amphoteric molecule were included in this experiment. When no tank-mix adjuvant was used, the lower part of the ear was reached five times less by the propiconazole spray than the upper part of the ear. When the tank-mix adjuvant was combined with the propiconazole formulation, an increase in residue on both the upper and the lower part of the ear was observed. A higher residue on the upper half of the ear means a better deposition, while a higher residue on the lower part of the ear is related to a better downward spreading over the grains and the needles of the ear. The combination of those two observations makes it interesting to use tank-mix adjuvants for the prevention of mycotoxin-producing Fusarium species. The advantages are emphasized even more when cost effectiveness was calculated. The use of a proper tank-mix adjuvant can result in 40% lower cost per application per hectare.
