The local order of an a-Si(sub39)C(sub61), a-Si(sub40)C(sub24)N(sub36) and a-Si(sub26)C(sub40)N(sub34), polymer derived amorphous ceramics, is reported. X-ray diffraction was used to obtain total structure factors and pair correlation functions. All materials showed a distinct short range order. A stoichiometric amorphous SiC phase was formed in A-Si(sub39)C(sub61), besides the amorphous carbon phase. Phase separation into two amorphous phases was seen in the case of a-Si(sub40)C(sub24)N(sub36) and a-Si(sub26)C(sub40)N(sub34).
