The influence of deposition conditions over the resultant structure and crystallographic orientation of textured CoCrTa/Cr sputtered thin films was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the crystalline anisotropy caused magnetic anisotropy in the material. Grains grew normal to the local grooved substrate surface, producing a c-axis out-of-plane component.

A study was conducted to analyze crystallographic textures in a CoCrPtTa/Cr/NiAl multilayer magnetic recording media using electron diffraction. Thin films were sputter deposited at room temperature using the Intevac MDP 250B deposition system. Experimental results indicated that the quality of the texture of the CoCrPtTa layer was similar to that of the underlying chromium layer.

High resolution scanning electron microscope and high resolution transmission electron microscope were used to study the microstructure and noise properties of oriented CoCrTa/Cr media, with temperatures ranging from room temperature to 250 degrees centigrade. Coercivity was directly proportional to substrate temperature, while loop squareness was inversely proportional. Maximum noise power was obtained for transition and uniform magnetization sputtering at 150 degrees centigrade.

The microstructural characteristics of longitudinal CoCrTa, CoCrPt and CoNiCrPt alloy thin films were investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the CoCrTa film had a clear physical separation between the 10 and 20 nm grains. In addition, the CoCrTa sample exhibited a signal-to-noise ratio which was 2.3 dB greater than CoCrPt and 4.6 dB higher than CoNiCrPt.

Thin film samples with Cr and NiP underlayers were comparatively analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, delta-M, torque and media noise measurements. The results showed that the samples with NiP underlayers were more isolated than the samples with Cr underlayers. In addition, the former's grain size was approximately 30 nm, smaller than the Cr-underlayer sample's 60 nm grain size. Media noise was lower in the sample with the NiP underlayer.
