Abstract

•California mussels are useful paleoenvironmental proxies from shell midden sites.•Mussel length increases with depth in the intertidal zone.•δ18O variations with depth can result in error of up to 1.8° C in water temperature.•There are no statistically significant patterns in δ13C with depth.•This error should be considered in water temperature and seasonality studies.
