Accurate measurements of ocean waves underpin efficient offshore operations and optimal offshore structure design, helping to ensure the offshore industry can operate both safely and economically. Popular instruments used by the offshore industry are the Rosemount WaveRadar (Radar) and the Waverider Buoy. The Optech Laser has been used at some locations for specific studies. Recent reports indicate systematic differences of order 10% among the wave measurements made by these instruments. This paper examines the relative performance of these instruments based upon various time-domain comparisons, including results from a quality control (QC) procedure, capabilities of measuring the wave surface profile (skewness), and crest heights for varying wind sea and swell conditions. The QC check provides good-quality data that can be further investigated with an assurance of error-free data, suggesting that the Waverider produces the bestquality data with the lowest failure rate compared to the Laser and Radar. A significant number of theWaverider surface elevation records have negative skewness, particularly at higher sea states, affecting its crest height measurements, which are lower than those from the Laser and Radar. Additionally, the significant wave height (H1/3) estimates of the Radar are lower than the Laser and Waverider, but its zero-crossing wave periods (TZ), on average, are longer than the Laser and theWaverider. The significant heights (H1/3) of Laser and Waverider are in good agreement for all three datasets, but the Waverider's zero-crossing wave period (TZ) estimates are significantly longer than the Laser. The latest established generation of weather radars provides polarimetric measurements of a wide variety of meteorological and nonmeteorological targets. While the classification of different precipitation types based on polarimetric data has been studied extensively, nonmeteorological targets have garnered relatively less attention beyond an effort to detect them for removal from meteorological products. In this paper we present a supervised learning classification system developed in the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) that uses Bayesian inference with empirical probability density distributions to assign individual range gate samples into 7 meteorological and 12 nonmeteorological classes, belonging to five top-level categories of hydrometeors, terrain, zoogenic, anthropogenic, and immaterial. We demonstrate how the accuracy of the class probability estimates provided by a basic naive Bayes classifier can be further improved by introducing synthetic channels created through limited neighborhood filtering, by properly managing partial moment nonresponse, and by considering spatial correlation of class membership of adjacent range gates. The choice of Bayesian classification provides well-substantiated quality estimates for all meteorological products, a feature that is being increasingly requested by users of weather radar products. The availability of comprehensive, fine-grained classification of nonmeteorological targets also enables a large array of emerging applications, utilizing nonprecipitation echo types and demonstrating the need to move from a single, universal quality metric of radar observations to one that depends on the application, the measured target type, and the specificity of the customers' requirements. Significance Statement: In addition to meteorological echoes, weather radars observe a wide variety of nonmeteorological phenomena including birds, insects, and human-made objects like ships and aircraft. Conventionally, these data have been rejected as undesirable disturbance, but lately their value for applications like aeroecological monitoring of bird and insect migration has been understood. The utilization of these data, however, has been hampered by a lack of comprehensive classification of nonmeteorological echoes. Accurate ocean wave measurements are needed for the safe design and operation of offshore facilities, but despite many ocean wave measurements, the accuracy of wave measurement systems remains an ongoing issue. Of paramount importance are measurements during extreme sea states. This paper examines wave measurements made with an Optech Laser (Laser), a Rosemount WaveRadar (Radar), and a Datawell Waverider buoy at North Rankin A (NRA) platform, Australia; Ekofisk, North Sea; and several South China Sea locations. We evaluate the relative performance of these instruments based upon various frequency domain comparisons, including comparisons of their 1D frequency spectra using spectrograms, spectral moments, high-frequency tail slopes, and significant wave heights derived from their wave spectra. A spectral relationship (transfer function) in terms of mean spectral ratio of the instruments is developed, which can be used for spectral calibration. On average, Laser and Waverider spectral estimates agree well at all sea states. However, at low wind speeds, the higher-frequency spectral levels of the Laser are relatively high and noisy compared with the other two instruments. Radar higher-frequency spectral estimates are relatively low compared to the other two instruments, particularly at lower sea states. In addition, the higher-frequency tail slopes of all three instruments vary between f−4 and f−5. However, at higher sea states, the Waverider tail slopes become steeper than f−5. The Radar produces the lowest significant wave heights (Hm0) compared to the Laser and Waverider, but its second-moment period (Tm02) estimates are longer than the Laser and Waverider. A method named BTREC, which is in fact an extension of tracking a radar echo by cross-correlation (TREC) method, is proposed based on the Barnes filter in this paper. BTREC is an efficient objective analysis method for smoothing the motion vectors of radar echo patterns. A comparative analysis of the BTREC vectors and the COTREC (another extension of TREC, which is restricted by the 2D continuity equation) vectors is conducted. The results show that the BTREC method corrects the noise and inconsistencies in TREC vectors (often induced by shielding, ground clutter, and rapid morphological changes of the radar patterns) more thoroughly than COTREC. Then the BTREC, COTREC, and TREC methods are applied to extrapolate the real radar echo pattern over Jiangxi Province in China for two cases (1900–2100 UTC 4 June and 0900–1100 UTC 30 June 2018). Results show that the BTREC method performs the best out of the three methods to forecast the radar echo patterns in the following 1 and 2 h, and has the least distortion. To further confirm that, 892 radar composite reflectivity mosaic images with precipitation in summer (June–August) over Jiangxi are collected to test the three methods. The results show that in the 1- and 2-h extrapolations, the mean differences of the threat score (TS), correlation (CORR), and probability of detection (POD) between BTREC and TREC are obviously more than 0, while that of the false alarm ratio (FAR) is remarkably less than 0 (the threshold to identify whether a grid is correctly predicted is set to 10 dBZ). Although the mean difference of TS, CORR, POD, and FAR between COTREC and TREC have similar variation, their magnitudes are obviously decreased (especially for the 2-h extrapolation). This further indicates that the BTREC method obviously improves the forecast of the radar echo pattern within the next 2 h compared to the COTREC and TREC methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sea surface temperature (SST) fronts are important for fisheries and marine ecology, as well as upper-ocean dynamics, weather forecasting, and climate monitoring. In this paper, we propose a new approach to detect SST fronts from RADARSAT-2 ScanSAR images, based on the correlation of SAR-derived wind speeds using the gray level cooccurrence matrix (GLCM) approach. Due to the large differences between the correlation of wind speeds for SST fronts compared to other areas, SST fronts can be detected by the threshold method. To eliminate small-scale features (or noise), the 30 km scale is used as the length threshold for the detection of the SST fronts. The proposed method is effective when wind speeds are between 3 and 13 m s−1. The overall accuracy of our method is about 93.6%, which is sufficient for operational applications. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to mitigate the so-called blind range on radars that use pulse compression. It is well known that the blind range is caused by the strong leak through into the receiver during the transmission cycle. The proposed technique is called progressive pulse compression (PPC) and is based on partial decoding. PPC uses a portion of the uncontaminated received signal in conjunction with pulse compression to estimate the echoes from the incomplete signal. The technique does not require the use of a fill pulse or any hardware modifications. PPC can be divided into three steps. The first step is to discard all the received signals during the transmit cycle and apply a smooth taper for continuous transition from zero to one. The second step is to perform the pulse compression using matched filter. The combination of these two steps is equivalent to performing pulse compression using a progressively changing template to partially extract the uncontaminated received signal for compression. The third step is to compensate for the progressively changing template so that proper reflectivity values can be recovered. This technique has been tested on the PX-1000 and will be implemented on PX-10k in the near future. These two radars are designed and operated by the Advanced Radar Research Center at the University of Oklahoma and are both X-band software-defined solid-state systems. Ground clutter filtering is an important and necessary step for quality control of ground-based weather radars. In this paper, ground clutter mitigation is addressed using a time-domain regression filter. Clutter filtering is now widely accomplished with spectral processing where the times series of data corresponding to a radar resolution volume are transformed with a discrete Fourier transform after which the zero and near-zero velocity clutter components are eliminated by setting them to zero. Subsequently for reflectivity, velocity, and spectrum width estimates, interpolation techniques are used to recover some of the power loss due to the clutter filter, which has been shown to reduce bias. The spectral technique requires that the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) time series be windowed to reduce clutter power leakage away from zero and near-zero velocities. Unfortunately, window functions such as the Hamming, Hann, and Blackman attenuate the time series signal by 4.01, 4.19, and 5.23 dB for 64-point times series, respectively, and thereby effectively reduce the number of independent samples available for estimating the radar parameters of any underlying weather echo. In this paper, a regression filtering technique is investigated, through simulated data, that does not require the use of such window functions and thus provides for better weather signal statistics. In a follow-on paper that is in preparation the technique will be demonstrated using both S-band polarimetric radar (S-Pol) and NEXRAD data. Here, it is shown that the regression filter rejects clutter as effectively as the spectral technique but has the distinct advantage that estimates of the radar variables are greatly improved. There is a demand for noncontact, high-accuracy, high-spatial-resolution, wireless sensing technologies for various water level and coastal monitoring applications. This paper presents a low-cost, compact, easily configurable interferometry radar for noncontact water level monitoring, including its hardware design, signal processing algorithms, and wireless communication strategies. Interferometry radar measures distance by comparing the phase lag between reflected and transmitted signals. Water level measurements using this approach have been demonstrated in a solitary wave laboratory experiment, a field deployment observing wave run-up near Ponte Vedra, Florida, and a field deployment observing waves and tides in the Sparkill Creek located in Piermont, New York. The experimental results from the radars with millimeter-level accuracy have been compared with reference sensors and demonstrate the potential of continuous wave radar for water level observations. Detection of in-flight icing hazard is a priority of the aviation safety community. The "Radar Icing Algorithm" (RadIA) has been developed to indicate the presence, phase, and relative size of supercooled drops. This paper provides an evaluation of RadIA via comparison to in situ microphysical measurements collected with a research aircraft during the 2017 "Seeded and Natural Orographic Wintertime clouds: the Idaho Experiment" (SNOWIE) field campaign. RadIA uses level-2 dual-polarization radar moments from operational National Weather Service WSR-88D and a numerical weather prediction model temperature profile as inputs. Moment membership functions are defined based on the results of previous studies, and fuzzy logic is used to combine the output of these functions to create a 0 to 1 interest for detecting small-drop, large-drop, and mixed-phase icing. Data from the two-dimensional stereo (2D-S) particle probe on board the University of Wyoming King Air aircraft were categorized as either liquid or solid phase water with a shape classification algorithm and binned by size. RadIA interest values from 17 cases were matched to statistical measures of the solid/liquid particle size distributions (such as maximum particle diameter) and values of LWC from research aircraft flights. Receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (AUC) values for RadIA algorithms were 0.75 for large-drop, 0.73 for small-drop, and 0.83 for mixed-phase cases. Doppler spectra measured by vertically pointing radars are inherently linked to raindrop size distributions (DSDs). But accurate estimation of DSDs remains challenging because raindrop spectra are broadened by atmospheric turbulence and shifted by vertical air motions. This paper presents a novel method to estimate vertical air motions in which there is no need to assume a model for DSD at each range gate. The theory of the new method is that the spectral difference between the adjacent range gates is contributed by vertical air motions and the variability of DSDs. The contribution of the change of DSDs is estimated by looking up the prepared tables [lookup tables (LUTs)] of raindrop velocity difference and shape function difference. Then the vertical air motions can be estimated by minimizing the cost function of the two spectra between the adjacent range gates. The retrieval algorithm is applied to three cases including a stratiform case and two convective cases observed by a C-band vertically pointing radar in Longmen, Guangdong Province, China, in June 2016. Before that, the spectrum broadening effect is removed by the traditional deconvolution method with a wind profiler. The vertical profiles of precipitation parameters are also retrieved to investigate the microphysical process. The precipitation parameters retrieved near the surface are compared with the ground data collected by a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD), and the results show good agreement. Significance Statement: Estimating vertical air motions and raindrop size distributions are of great help to improve precipitation forecasts and weather modification. This study developed a new method to estimate the vertical air motions using Doppler spectra measured by a vertically pointing radar. The advantage of the new method is that there is no need to assume models for raindrop size distributions. We applied the new method to a stratiform case and two convective cases, and the vertical profiles of precipitation parameters are retrieved. The results show that both the dynamic and microphysical processes in convective cases have larger variability than those in the stratiform case. Nowcasting based on weather radar uses the current and past observations to make estimations of future radar echoes. There are many types of operationally deployed nowcasting systems, but none of them are currently based on deep learning, despite it being an active area of research in the last few years. This paper explores deep learning models as alternatives to current methods by proposing different architectures and comparing them against some operational nowcasting systems. The methods proposed here, harnessing residual convolutional encoder–decoder architectures, reach a level of performance expected of current systems and in certain scenarios can even outperform them. Finally, some of the potential drawbacks of using deep learning are analyzed. No decay in the performance on a different geographical area from where the models were trained was found. No edge or checkerboard artifact, common in convolutional operations, was found that affects the nowcasting metrics. Significance Statement: Deep learning methods started to become more popular for weather nowcasting, but none is operational. We noticed that most of the studies did not present a benchmark against operational systems, and in many cases, the evaluation methods used were limited to light rain scenarios. Our goal is to propose deep learning models, analyze how they perform against operational methods in many scenarios, and explore some of the potential limitations. We found that our models perform better for low to mild storms. While we showed that common side effects of convolutional operations (a common technique in deep learning) did not impair the performance, we agree with many other authors that the major problem is the smoothing effect that hinders the nowcast of intense storms. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC's) W-band (94 GHz) Cloud Radar System (CRS) has been comprehensively updated to modern solid-state and digital technology. This W-band (94 GHz) radar flies in nadir-pointing mode on the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft, providing polarimetric reflectivity and Doppler measurements of clouds and precipitation. This paper describes the design and signal processing of the upgraded CRS. It includes details on the hardware upgrades [solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) transmitter, antenna, and digital receiver] including a new reflectarray antenna and solid-state transmitter. It also includes algorithms, including internal loop-back calibration, external calibration using a direct relationship between volume reflectivity and the range-integrated backscatter of the ocean, and a modified staggered–pulse repetition frequency (PRF) Doppler algorithm that is highly resistant to unfolding errors. An assumption related to clouds is one of uncertain factors in precipitation retrievals by the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory. While an attenuation due to cloud ice is negligibly small for Ku and Ka bands, attenuation by cloud liquid water is larger in the Ka band and estimating precipitation intensity with high accuracy from Ka-band observations can require developing a method to estimate the attenuation due to cloud liquid water content (CLWC). This paper describes a CLWC database used in the DPR level-2 algorithm for the GPM V06A product. In the algorithm, the CLWC value is assumed using the database with inputs of precipitation-related variables, temperature, and geolocation information. A calculation of the database was made using the 3.5-km-mesh global atmospheric simulation derived from the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) global cloud-system-resolving model. Impacts of current CLWC assumptions for surface precipitation estimates were evaluated by comparisons of precipitation retrieval results between default values and 0 mg m−3 of the CLWC. The impacts were quantified by the normalized mean absolute difference (NMAD) and the NMAD values showed 2.3% for the Ku, 9.9% for the Ka, and 6.5% for the dual-frequency algorithms in global averages, while they were larger in the tropics than in high latitudes. Effects of the precipitation estimates from the CLWC assumption were examined further in terms of retrieval processes affected by the CLWC assumption. This paper describes a technique for estimating the liquid water content (LWC) and a characteristic particle diameter in stratocumulus clouds using radar and lidar observations. The uncertainty in LWC estimate from radar and lidar measurements is significantly reduced once the characteristic particle diameter is known. The technique is independent of the drop size distribution. It is applicable for a broad range of W-band reflectivity Z between −30 and 0 dBZ and all values of lidar backscatter β observations. No partitioning of cloud or drizzle is required on the basis of an arbitrary threshold of Z as in prior studies. A method for estimating droplet diameter and LWC was derived from the electromagnetic simulations of radar and lidar observations. In situ stratocumulus cloud and drizzle probe spectra were input to the electromagnetic simulation. The retrieved droplet diameter and LWC were validated using in situ measurements from the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The retrieval method was applied to radar and lidar measurements from the northeastern Pacific. Uncertainty in the retrieved droplet diameter and LWC that are due to the measurement errors in radar and lidar backscatter measurements are 7% and 14%, respectively. Since the dual-polarization upgrade of the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D), the polarimetric variables have become a fundamental tool for better interpretation and forecasting of hazardous weather events. Thus, improving their quality has been an important long-standing effort. In this paper, we introduce the hybrid-scan estimators (HSE), which use the available data in split cuts of operational volume coverage patterns (VCP) to provide better estimates of differential reflectivity, differential phase, and correlation coefficient. The HSE are designed to choose between the data provided by either one of the two scans in split cuts based on their expected statistical performance, resulting in the same or better data quality compared to the conventional estimators. The performance improvement realized with the HSE is characterized with simulations and illustrated with data from WSR-88D. While relatively simple, an operational implementation of the HSE could bring improvements to forecasters' data interpretation and algorithm performance, both of which rely on dual-polarization radar data. To detect wake vortices in all weather conditions, lidar and radar sensors are complementary. It is important to determine accurately the limitations of the radar detection in clear air and to determine the parameters influencing the detection. This paper is the first study to present the simulation and analysis of the radar signatures of wake vortices on the basis of state-of-the-art 3D large-eddy simulations. The setup of the large-eddy simulations is described and the evolution of the wake vortices is illustrated for the three simulated cases. A modified version of the model developed by Muschinski et al. is used here for the calculation of the radar-backscattered signal and the second moment of the Doppler spectrum that is used to estimate the wake vortex circulation. The simulator uses two different radar configurations for the retrieval of the circulation, which is compared with the circulation obtained directly from the large-eddy simulations. The Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere–Stratosphere–Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter (PANSY) radar is a large atmospheric radar located at the Antarctic Syowa Station (69.01°S, 39.59°E). The PANSY radar performed the first incoherent scatter (IS) measurements in the Antarctic region in 2015. Several specific observations were undertaken in 2017 including a 24-h observation of the ionosphere using a peripheral antenna array to suppress interference from the field-aligned irregularities (FAIs). This paper presents the preliminary results derived from the IS measurements using the PANSY radar and the adaptive signal processing techniques to suppress FAIs. The norm-constrained and directionally constrained minimization of power (NC-DCMP) algorithm was applied to the 24-h ionosphere observations by the PANSY radar with a weighting applied to the directional constraint based on the gain differences of the subarrays. When compared with the conventional nonadaptive approach, the number of usable power profiles was increased by about 24% by the gain-weighted NC-DCMP algorithm, suggesting its effectiveness for FAI clutter suppression in ionosphere observations. Furthermore, detection of FAIs using the dedicated antenna array was found valuable in assessing the reliability of estimations of electron density based on VHF-band IS radar data. The CSU–CHILL radar is a dual-wavelength, dual-polarization weather radar system operating at S and X band with coaxial beams. This radar system offers a unique environment to develop and/or validate algorithms that cut across its wavelengths and polarizations. This paper presents a method to retrieve resonance scattering regions from the difference in intrinsic reflectivities after attenuation correction, which is performed using measured reflectivity fields only. The algorithm to retrieve these regions dominated by non-Rayleigh scattering is applied to different storm events, and the obtained data field capturing the difference in S- and X-band reflectivities due to resonance effects (which we will call Mie signal for convenience) is compared to the collocated dual-polarization fields. The obtained Mie signal is also compared to hail reports. In both cases, the retrieved Mie signal is found to be consistent with the rest of the dual-polarization data fields, and in some situations, it is shown to bring information not directly discernible from the usual dual-polarization radar variables. The stability and accuracy of weather radar reflectivity calibration are imperative for quantitative applications, such as rainfall estimation, severe weather monitoring and nowcasting, and assimilation in numerical weather prediction models. Various radar calibration and monitoring techniques have been developed, but only recently have integrated approaches been proposed, that is, using different calibration techniques in combination. In this paper the following three techniques are used: 1) ground clutter monitoring, 2) comparisons with spaceborne radars, and 3) the self-consistency of polarimetric variables. These techniques are applied to a C-band polarimetric radar (CPOL) located in the Australian tropics since 1998. The ground clutter monitoring technique is applied to each radar volumetric scan and provides a means to reliably detect changes in calibration, relative to a baseline. It is remarkably stable to within a standard deviation of 0.1 dB. To obtain an absolute calibration value, CPOL observations are compared to spaceborne radars on board TRMM and GPM using a volume-matching technique. Using an iterative procedure and stable calibration periods identified by the ground echoes technique, we improve the accuracy of this technique to about 1 dB. Finally, we review the self-consistency technique and constrain its assumptions using results from the hybrid TRMM–GPM and ground echo technique. Small changes in the self-consistency parameterization can lead to 5 dB of variation in the reflectivity calibration. Accurate and automated dealiasing of radar data is important for data interpretation and downstream applications such as numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. In this paper an improved radial velocity dealiasing scheme is presented and evaluated using observations from several S-band radars under the severe weather conditions of typhoons and hurricanes. This scheme, named Automated Dealiasing for Typhoon and Hurricane (ADTH), is a further development of the China New Generation Doppler Weather Radar (CINRAD) improved dealiasing algorithm (CIDA). The upgraded algorithm ADTH includes three modules designed to select the first radial from which the dealiasing process starts, to conduct a two-way multipass dealiasing, and to perform an error check for a final local dealiasing. The dealiasing algorithm is applied to two typhoon hurricane cases and four typhoon cases observed with radars from CINRAD, NEXRAD of the United States, and the Taiwan radar network for a continuous period of 12 h for each of the selected cases. The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) made one of the first radar observations of a rare tornadic storm that occurred on 10 June 2014 in the Seoul metropolitan region, South Korea, using X-band dual-polarization radar. The tornado lasted for about 18 min, during which it destroyed about 20 greenhouses and injured several people. This tornado was rated at F0 on the Fujita scale. The KICT X-band dual-polarization radar was installed in the area northwest of Seoul to monitor storm development, measure rainfall, improve hazard mitigation, and disaster management. This paper presents the high-resolution (both spatial and temporal) polarimetric radar observations of the tornado, along with the radar parameters of reflectivity, differential reflectivity, Doppler velocity, and copolar correlation coefficient. The characteristic signatures of polarimetric variables, including the descending reflectivity core, weak echo hole, Doppler velocity couplet, and hook echo, are used to describe the tornado vortex and its development. In addition, the close range (about 5-km distance) observations of the hook echo show the high-resolution radar signatures of a weak echo region surrounded by high-reflectivity annular rings inside the tornado vortex. From development to dissipation, various finescale features are observed, including lofted tornadic debris and potential hail signatures. The high-resolution (close range) observations were also compared against low-resolution (long range) radar observations. Uncertainties in aircraft inertial navigation system and radar-pointing angles can have a large impact on the accuracy of airborne dual-Doppler analyses. The Testud et al. (THL) method has been routinely applied to data collected by airborne tail Doppler radars over flat and nonmoving terrain. The navigation correction method proposed in Georgis et al. (GRH) extended the THL method over complex terrain and moving ocean surfaces by using a variational formulation but its capability over ocean has yet to be tested. Recognizing the limitations of the THL method, Bosart et al. (BLW) proposed to derive ground speed, tilt, and drift errors by statistically comparing aircraft in situ wind with dual-Doppler wind at the flight level. When combined with the THL method, the BLW method can retrieve all navigation errors accurately; however, it can be applied only to flat surfaces, and it is rather difficult to automate. This paper presents a generalized navigation correction method (GNCM) based on the GRH method that will serve as a single algorithm for airborne tail Doppler radar navigation correction for all possible surface conditions. The GNCM includes all possible corrections in the cost function and implements a new closure assumption by taking advantage of an accurate aircraft ground speed derived from GPS technology. The GNCM is tested extensively using synthetic airborne Doppler radar data with known navigation errors and published datasets from previous field campaigns. The scattering of microwaves at frequencies between 50 and 200 GHz by ice particles in the atmosphere is an essential element in the retrieval of instantaneous surface precipitation from spaceborne passive radiometers. This paper explores how the variable distribution of solid and liquid hydrometeors in the atmospheric column over land surfaces affects the brightness temperature (TB) measured by GMI at 89 GHz through the analysis of Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) reflectivity profiles along the 89-GHz beam. The objective is to refine the statistical relations between observed TBs and surface precipitation over land and to define their limits. As GMI is scanning with a 53° Earth incident angle, the observed atmospheric volume is actually not a vertical column, which may lead to very heterogeneous and seemingly inconsistent distributions of the hydrometeors inside the beam. It is found that the 89-GHz TB is mostly sensitive to the presence of ice hydrometeors several kilometers above the 0°C isotherm, up to 10 km above the 0°C isotherm for the deepest convective systems, but is a modest predictor of the surface precipitation rate. To perform a precise mapping of atmospheric ice, the altitude of the individual ice clusters must be known. Indeed, if variations in the altitude of ice are not accounted for, then the high incident angle of GMI causes a horizontal shift (parallax shift) between the estimated position of the ice clusters and their actual position. The CSU-CHILL radar is a dual-wavelength, dual-polarization weather radar system operating at S and X bands with coaxial beams. One of the capabilities of this radar system is the possibility of developing and/or validating algorithms across dual wavelengths and dual polarizations. This paper presents one such instance, showing how the rainfall field can be estimated either from the S- and X-band reflectivities or from the differential propagation phase at X band. To do so, the paper first presents a dual-wavelength attenuation correction method that uses the reflectivity measured at S band, as the constraint for the correction of the reflectivity measured at X band, and it describes how Mie scattering regions at X band may be detected from the retrieved path-integrated attenuation field. Then, the paper describes how the resulting specific attenuation field relates to rainfall and specific phase at X band, which can be obtained from dual-polarization data at a single wavelength as well, and shows examples. Finally, the paper looks at the relation between attenuation and the differential phase as a function of elevation angle for a few cases, which may be related to the drop size distribution and mean diameter, as well as temperature. This paper presents examples of the data quality assessment of surface radial velocity maps obtained from shore-based single and multiple high-frequency radars (HFRs) using statistical and dynamical approaches in a hindcast mode. Since a single radial velocity map contains partial information regarding a true current field, archived radial velocity data embed geophysical signals, such as tides, wind stress, and near-inertial and low-frequency variance. The spatial consistency of the geophysical signals and their dynamic relationships with driving forces are used to conduct the quality assurance and quality control of radial velocity data. For instance, spatial coherence, tidal amplitudes and phases, and wind-radial transfer functions are used to identify a spurious range and azimuthal bin. The uncertainty and signal-to-noise ratio of radial data are estimated with the standard deviation and cross correlation of paired radials sampled at nearby grid points that belong to two different radars. Hydrometeor classification methods using polarimetric radar variables rely on probability density functions (PDFs) or membership functions derived empirically or by using electromagnetic scattering calculations. This paper describes an objective approach based on cluster analysis to deriving the PDFs. An iterative procedure with K-means clustering and expectation-maximization clustering based on Gaussian mixture models is developed to generate a series of prototypes for each hydrometeor type from several radar scans. The prototypes are then grouped together to produce a PDF for each hydrometeor type, which is modeled as a Gaussian mixture. The cluster-based method is applied to polarimetric radar data collected with the CP-2 S-band radar near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The results are illustrated and compared with theoretical classification boundaries in the literature. Some notable differences are found. One pivotal factor affecting the accuracy of HF radar current measurements is the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performance of the current signal. The beamforming technology or superresolution algorithm cannot always perform best in practical applications because of the phase errors existing in array channels. These phase errors, which cause uncertain estimation of DOA, lead to confused values in radial current maps. To solve this problem, this paper is focused on discussing the performances of two autocalibration methods using sea echoes for multifrequency high-frequency (MHF) radar current measurements. These two array calibration methods, based on maximum likelihood (ML) and multiple signal classification (MU), first seek single-DOA sea echoes and then gather them for array calibration using different cost functions. The ML and MU methods provide approximate mean phases, while the standard phase errors of the MU method are smaller. After array calibration using these two methods, the results show significant improvements in current retrievals. Comparisons between the MHF radar and ADCPs reveal that array calibration using the ML and MU methods also improves the estimation of radial currents clearly, with correlation coefficients over 0.93 and rms differences of 0.09-0.18 m s−1 at different operating frequencies and sampling locations. The performance of the bearing offset is also improved. Only small bearing offsets less than 10° exist in radial current measurements. Simulation of radar beam propagation is an important component of numerous radar applications in meteorology, including height assignment, quality control, and especially the so-called radar forward operator. Although beam propagation in the atmosphere depends on the refractive index and its vertical variation, which themselves depend on the actual state of the atmosphere, the most common method is to apply the 4/3 earth radius model, based on climatological standard conditions. Serious deviations from the climatological value can occur under so-called ducting conditions, where radar beams at low elevations can be trapped or propagate in a waveguide-like fashion, such that this model is unsuitable in this case. To account for the actual atmospheric conditions, sophisticated methods have been developed in literature. However, concerning the practical implementation of these methods, it was determined that the description in the literature is not always complete with respect to possible pitfalls for practical implementations. In this paper, a revised version of an existing method (one example for the above-mentioned 'pitfall' statement) is introduced that exploits Snell's law for spherically stratified media. From Snell's law, the correct sign of the local elevation is a priori ambiguous, and the revised method explicitly applies (i) a total reflection criterion and (ii) another ad hoc criterion to solve the problem. Additionally, a new method, based on an ordinary differential equation with respect to range, is proposed in this paper that has no ambiguity. Sensitivity experiments are conducted to investigate the properties of these three methods. The results show that both the revised and new methods are robust under nonstandard conditions. But considering the need to catch an elevation sign ambiguity in the revised method (which cannot be excluded to fail in rare instances), the new method is regarded as more robust and unproblematic, for example, for applications in radar forward operators. The NOAA W-band radar was deployed on a P-3 aircraft during a study of storm fronts off the U.S. West Coast in 2015 in the second CalWater (CalWater-2) field program. This paper presents an analysis of measured equivalent radar reflectivity factor Zem profiles to estimate the path-averaged precipitation rate and profiles of precipitation microphysics. Several approaches are explored using information derived from attenuation of Zem as a result of absorption and scattering by raindrops. The first approach uses the observed decrease of Zem with range below the aircraft to estimate column mean precipitation rates. A hybrid approach that combines Zem in light rain and attenuation in stronger rain performed best. The second approach estimates path-integrated attenuation (PIA) via the difference in measured and calculated normalized radar cross sections (NRCSm and NRCSc, respectively) retrieved from the ocean surface. The retrieved rain rates are compared to estimates from two other systems on the P-3: a Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) and a Wide-Swath Radar Altimeter (WSRA). The W-band radar gives reasonable values for rain rates in the range 0-10 mm h−1 with an uncertainty on the order of 1 mm h−1. Mean profiles of Zem, raindrop Doppler velocity, attenuation, and precipitation rate in bins of rain rate are also computed. A method for correcting measured profiles of Zem for attenuation to estimate profiles of nonattenuated profiles of Ze is examined. The radar network of the German Weather Service [Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)] provides 3D Doppler data in high spatial and temporal resolution, supporting the identification and tracking of dynamic small-scale weather phenomena. The software framework Polarimetric Radar Algorithms (POLARA) has been developed at DWD to better exploit the capabilities of the existing remote sensing data. The data processing and quality assurance implemented in POLARA include a dual-PRF dealiasing algorithm with error correction. Azimuthal shear information is derived and processed in the mesocyclone detection algorithm (MCD). Low- and midlevel azimuthal shear and track products are available as composite (multiradar) products. Azimuthal shear may be considered as a proxy for rotation. The MCD results and azimuthal shear products are part of the severe weather detection algorithms of DWD and are provided to the forecaster on the NinJo meteorological workstation system. The forecaster analyzes potentially severe cells by combining near-storm environment data with the MCD product as well as with the instantaneous azimuthal shear products (mid- and low level) and their tracks. These products and tracks are used to diagnose threat potential by means of azimuthal shear intensity and track longevity. Feedback from forecasters has shown the utility of the algorithms to analyze and diagnose severe convective cells in Germany and in adjacent Europe. Coherent power is an alternative to the conventional noise-subtracted power technique for measuring weather radar signal power. The inherent noise-canceling feature of coherent power eliminates the need for estimating and subtracting the noise component, which is required when performing conventional signal power estimation at low signal-to-noise ratio. The coherent power technique is particularly useful when averaging a high number of samples to improve sensitivity to weak signals. In such cases, the signal power is small compared to the noise power and the required accuracy of the estimated noise power may be difficult to achieve. This paper compares conventional signal power estimation with the coherent power measurement technique by investigating bias, standard deviation, and probability of false alarm and detection rates as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and threshold level. This comparison is performed using analytical expressions, numerical simulations, and analysis of cloud and precipitation data collected with the airborne solid-state Ka-band precipitation radar (KPR) operated by the University of Wyoming. This paper presents a least squares method to estimate the horizontal (isotropic or anisotropic) spatial covariance of two-dimensional orthogonal vector components, without introducing an intervening mapping step and biases, from the spatial covariance of the nonorthogonally and irregularly sampled raw scalar velocities. The field is assumed to be locally homogeneous in space and sampled in an ensemble so the unknown spatial covariance is a function of spatial lag only. The transformation between the irregular grid on which nonorthogonal scalar projections of the vector are sampled and the regular orthogonal grid on which they will be mapped is created using the geometry of the problem. The spatial covariance of the orthogonal velocity components of the field is parameterized by either the energy (power) spectrum in the wavenumber domain or the lagged covariance in the spatial domain. The energy spectrum is constrained to be nonnegative definite as part of the solution of the inverse problem. This approach is applied to three example sets of data, using nonorthogonally and irregularly sampled radial velocity data obtained from 1) a simple spectral model, 2) a regional numerical model, and 3) an array of high-frequency radars. In tests where the true covariance is known, the proposed direct approaches fitting to parameterizations of the nonorthogonally and irregularly sampled raw data in the wavenumber domain and spatial domain outperform methods that map the data to a regular grid before estimating the covariance. The recently developed two-dimensional variational methods for analyzing vortex winds from radar-observed mesocyclones can be extended to analyze three-dimensional vortex winds, but the first task for this extension is to estimate the vortex center location and its continuous variations in four-dimensional space so that the horizontal location of the vortex center can be expressed as a continuous function of height and time. To accomplish this task, a three-step method is developed in this paper. The method is applied to the Moore, Oklahoma, tornadic mesocyclone observed by the operational KTLX radar (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) and the NSSL phased-array radar on 20 May 2013. The estimated vortex center trajectory at the ground level is verified with the tornado damage survey data. The estimated vortex center trajectories above the ground (up to 4-km height) reveal that the vortex core was initially tilted northeastward along the direction of the environmental flow and its vertical shear but became nearly vertical about 16 min later and 4 min before the vortex started to cause EF5 damages. In Doppler weather radars, the presence of unfolding errors or outliers is a well-known quality issue for radial velocity fields estimated using the dual-pulse repetition frequency (PRF) technique. Postprocessing methods have been developed to correct dual-PRF outliers, but these need prior application of a dealiasing algorithm for an adequate correction. This paper presents an alternative procedure based on circular statistics that corrects dual-PRF errors in the presence of extended Nyquist aliasing. The correction potential of the proposed method is quantitatively tested by means of velocity field simulations and is exemplified in the application to real cases, including severe storm events. The comparison with two other existing correction methods indicates an improved performance in the correction of clustered outliers. The technique proposed is well suited for real-time applications requiring high-quality Doppler radar velocity fields, such as wind shear and mesocyclone detection algorithms, or assimilation in numerical weather prediction models. Adaptive range oversampling processing can be used either to reduce the variance of radar-variable estimates without increasing scan times or to reduce scan times without increasing the variance of estimates. For example, an implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening on the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased-Array Radar (NWRT PAR) led to a twofold reduction in scan times. Conversely, a proposed implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening the U.S. Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network would reduce the variance of dual-polarization estimates while keeping current scan times. However, the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening is not compatible with radar-variable estimators for which an explicit variance expression is not readily available. One such nontraditional estimator is the hybrid spectrum-width estimator, which is currently used in the NEXRAD network. In this paper, an extension of adaptive pseudowhitening is proposed that utilizes lookup tables (rather than analytical solutions based on explicit variance expressions) to obtain range oversampling transformations. After describing this lookup table (LUT) adaptive pseudowhitening technique, its performance is compared to that of the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening using traditional radar-variable estimators. This paper presents a novel method for the automatic determination of the diagonal-loading level for robust adaptive beamforming on radar wind profilers. This method balances the degradation of the signal-to-interference ratio with that of the signal-to-noise ratio to maximize the detectability of the backscattered signals. Because radial wind velocities are usually estimated from the first moment of the spectrum of backscattered echoes, both the residual ground clutter and any increase in noise level degrade the detectability of atmospheric echoes. The proposed algorithm evaluates the power spectral density of the residual clutter and increased noise to determine the optimal diagonal-loading level by balancing these two factors. The results of numerical simulation show that, without the need to specify any user parameters, the proposed algorithm is stable and more effective at maximizing the signal-to-interference ratio than the conventional norm-constrained diagonal-loading approach. The stability and clutter suppression capability of the proposed algorithm are examined using data from the Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter Radar. Water vapor has a strong influence on the evolution of heavy precipitation events due to the huge latent heat associated with the phase change process of water. Accurate monitoring of atmospheric water vapor distribution is thus essential in predicting the severity and life cycle of heavy rain. This paper presents a systematic study on the application of tomographic solutions to investigate water vapor variations during heavy precipitation events. Using global positioning system (GPS) observations, the wet refractivity field was constructed at a temporal resolution of 30 min for three heavy precipitation events occurring in Hong Kong, China, in 2010-14. The zenith wet delay (ZWD) is shown to be a good indicator in observing the water vapor evolution in heavy rain events. The variabilities of water vapor at five altitude layers (<1000, 1000-2000, 2000-3000, 3000-5000, and >5000 m) were examined. It revealed that water vapor above 3000 m has larger fluctuation than that under 3000 m, though it accounts for only 10%-25% of the total amount of water vapor. The relative humidity fields derived from tomographic results revealed moisture variation, accumulation, saturation, and condensation during the heavy rain events. The water vapor variabilities observed by tomography have been validated using European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis and radiosonde data. The refractivity from clutter (RFC) technique has been proved to be an effective way to estimate atmospheric duct structure. An important issue for RFC is how to make the estimate more robust, especially in range-dependent ducting conditions. Traditionally, statistical inversion methods need a large number of forward propagation model runs to obtain an acceptable result. Especially when the parameter search space is multidimensional, these methods are prone to being trapped into local optimal solutions. Recently published results (Zhao and Huang) indicate that the adjoint parabolic equation (PE) method holds promise for real-time estimation of one-dimensional refractive index structure from radar sea clutter returns. This paper is aimed at extending the adjoint PE method to range-dependent evaporation duct cases, with a log-linear relationship describing duct structures. Numerical simulations are used to test the performance of this method and the results are compared with that retrieved using a genetic algorithm. This paper presents an adaptive scan strategy concept for phased array weather radars (PAWR) with the objective of increasing the scan speed and capturing features of the storm system while maintaining the measurement accuracy. The adaptive scan strategy is developed based on the space-time variability of the storm under observation. Quickly evolving regions are scanned more often and the spatial sampling resolution is matched to the spatial scale. A model that includes the interaction between space and time is used to extract spatial and temporal scales of the medium and to define scanning regions. The temporal scale constrains the radar revisit time, while the measurement accuracy controls the radar's dwell time. These conditions are employed in a task scheduler that works on a ray-by-ray basis and is designed to balance task priority and radar resources. The scheduler algorithm also includes an optimization procedure for minimizing radar scan time. The model and the scan strategy are demonstrated using simulation data. The alias-robust variational (AR-Var) analysis developed originally for dealiasing raw velocities scanned from winter ice storms by operational WSR-88D radars was recently extended for dealiasing raw velocities scanned from all storms to increase the dealiased data coverage. The extended AR-Var (eAR-Var)-based dealiasing can detect tornadic mesocyclones and estimate their vortex center locations as by-products, but its dealiased data often leave rejected data holes in the critical vortex core and vicinity areas of detected mesocyclones. To solve this problem, a mesocyclone-targeted dealiasing routine is developed in this paper to perform two additional steps after the eAR-Var dealiasing. In particular, a reference check is performed in the first step, with the required reference velocities produced by a newly designed alias-robust vortex wind analysis to recover the rejected data in the vortex core, and then a continuity check is performed in the second step to recover the remaining rejected data around and beyond the vortex core. The mesocyclone-targeted dealiasing is tested extensively with severely aliased velocity data scanned from tornadic storms and is found to be effective and efficient for recovering the rejected data in and around the vortex core of the detected mesocyclone, provided the required data coverage conditions and analysis acceptance conditions are satisfied. The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory has reflectivity measurements at two different frequencies: Ku and Ka bands. The dual-frequency ratio from the measurements has been used to perform rain type classification and microphysics retrieval in the current DPR level 2 algorithm. The dual-frequency classification module is a new module in the GPM level 2 algorithm. The module performs rain type classification and melting region detection using the vertical profile of the dual-frequency ratio. This paper presents an evaluation of the performance of the GPM dual-frequency classification module after launch. The evaluation process includes a comparison between the dual-frequency classification results and the TRMM legacy single-frequency results, as well as validation with ground radars. This paper presents a novel, simple method to correct reflectivity measurements of weather radars that operate in attenuation-influenced frequency bands using observations from less attenuated radar systems. In recent years radar systems operating in the X-band frequency range have been developed to provide precipitation fields for areas of special interest in high temporal (≤1 min) and spatial (≤250 m) resolution in complement to nationwide radar networks. However, X-band radars are highly influenced by attenuation. C- and S-band radars typically have coarser resolution (250 m-1 km and 5 min) but are less affected by attenuation. Correcting for attenuation effects in simple (non-Doppler) single-polarized X-band radars remains challenging and is often dependent on restriction parameters, for example, those derived from mountain returns. Therefore, these algorithms are applicable only in limited areas. The method proposed here uses measurements from C-band radars and hence can be applied in all regions covered by nationwide C- (or S-) band radar networks. First, a single scan of X-band radar measurements is used exemplary to identify advantages and disadvantages of the novel algorithm compared to a standard single radar algorithm. The performance of the correction algorithms in different types of precipitation is examined in nine case studies. The proposed method provides very promising results for each type of precipitation. Additionally, it is evaluated in a 5-month comparison with Micro Rain Radar (MRR) observations. The bias between uncorrected X-band radar and MRR data is nearly eliminated by the attenuation correction algorithm, and the RMSE is reduced by 20% while the correlation of ~0.9 between both systems remains nearly constant. The Sahelian zone of West Africa is a semiarid area where strong amplitude of the seasonal and diurnal cycles of water vapor and temperature is observed. One year of continuous observation of vertical profiles of water vapor and temperature gathered from Niamey, Niger, with a profiling microwave radiometer is used to analyze the climatology of refractivity and microwave propagation regimes in the low troposphere. Seasonal and diurnal cycles of refractivity and ground-based radar anomalous propagation are emphasized. It is shown that the combined effect of water vapor and temperature vertical gradients is responsible for strong seasonal and diurnal cycles of the ducting propagation regime. Statistics of propagation regimes are given. The probability density functions of the refractivity gradient are found lognormally distributed. Three months of C-band radar data simultaneous with the profiling microwave radiometer observations have also been collected. Relations between the vertical refractivity gradient and the ground-based radar anomalous propagation echoes (APE) are illustrated and discussed. APE spatial distributions are found strongly related to the main features of the orography and topography inside the radar-observed area. Contingency tests show that the probability for APE to be linked to ducting is higher than 95%. In addition, this paper suggests that observing the refractivity vertical profiles from a microwave radiometer profiler located close to a meteorological radar provides information on whether anomalous propagation has to be considered as a potential cause of spurious signal in the measured reflectivity field. The operational combined algorithm is designed to reduce uncertainties in GPM Core Observatory precipitation estimates by effectively integrating complementary information from the GPM Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) and the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) into an optimal, physically consistent precipitation product. Although similar in many respects to previously developed combined algorithms, the GPM combined algorithm has several unique features that are specifically designed to meet the GPM objectives of deriving, based on GPM Core Observatory information, accurate and physically consistent precipitation estimates from multiple spaceborne instruments, and ancillary environmental data from reanalyses. The algorithm features an optimal estimation framework based on a statistical formulation of the Gauss-Newton method, a parameterization for the nonuniform distribution of precipitation within the radar fields of view, a methodology to detect and account for multiple scattering in Ka-band DPR observations, and a statistical deconvolution technique that allows for an efficient sequential incorporation of radiometer information into DPR precipitation retrievals. By fitting a parametric vortex model directly to aliased radar radial velocities scanned from a hurricane, the maximum tangential velocity and its radial distance from the hurricane vortex center can be estimated by the recently developed alias-robust vortex analysis. This vortex analysis can be refined to produce a suitable reference radial velocity field on each tilt of a radar scan for the reference check in the first main step of dealiasing. This paper presents the techniques developed for the refinements and shows how and to what extent the refined vortex analysis can improve the reference check and thus enhance the dealiased data coverage, especially over severely aliased data areas around the vortex core of a hurricane or typhoon. In addition, stringent threshold conditions are used in the reference check and the subsequent continuity check to ensure the accepted data are free of alias or almost so. The robustness and improved performance of the method are exemplified by the results tested with severely aliased radial velocities scanned by operational WSR-88D radars from hurricanes in the United States and by operational China New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD) base data format SA radars from typhoons in China. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) algorithms consist of modules. This paper describes version 4 (V4) of GPM DPR level 2 (L2) classification (CSF) modules, which consist of two single-frequency (SF) modules-that is, Ku-only and Ka-only modules-and a dual-frequency (DF) module. Each CSF module detects bright band (BB) and classifies rain into three major types, that is, stratiform, convective, and other. The Ku-only and Ka-only CSF modules use algorithms that are similar to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rain type classification algorithm 2A23. The DF CSF module uses a new method called the measured dual-frequency ratio (DFRm) method for the rain type classification and the detection of BB. It is shown that the Ku-only CSF module and the DF CSF module produce almost indistinguishable rain type counts in a statistical sense. This paper outlines an approach for estimating latent heating, surface rainfall rate, and liquid water path in warm rain from downward-viewing W-band radar observations using a Bayesian Monte Carlo algorithm. The algorithm utilizes observed vertical and path-integrated characteristics of precipitating liquid clouds to identify the most appropriate hydrometeor and latent heating structures in a large database of profiles generated using a cloud-resolving model. These characteristics are selected by applying multiple performance metrics to synthetic retrievals. Analysis of the retrievals suggests that a combination of cloud-top, rain-top, and maximum reflectivity heights; vertically integrated reflectivity and attenuation; and a measure of near-surface intensity is sufficient to constrain bulk properties and the vertical structure of warm rain systems. When applied to observations at CloudSat resolution, biases in retrieved liquid water path and surface rainfall rate are small (less than 10%). The algorithm also captures the vertical structure of latent heating, although the magnitudes of integrated heating and cooling exhibit nearly compensating low biases. Random errors are larger owing to the limitations of single-frequency radar observations in constraining drop size distributions. Uncertainties in the altitudes of peak heating and cooling at the pixel scale are typically less than one vertical level, while uncertainties in vertically resolved estimates of heating and cooling rates are on the order of a factor of 2. The utility of the technique is illustrated through application to case studies from airborne radar data from the VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study field campaign and satellite observations from CloudSat. The sun is known to be a good target for weather radar calibration. In this paper high-resolution raster scans of the sun at high elevations will be used to derive the antenna pattern of weather radar, without being affected by beam propagation effects and reflections close to the earth's surface. It is shown that this pattern matches well to pattern measurements using a point source. Hence, a good estimation of the real antenna pattern can be derived using the sun. Furthermore, formulas to extract undistorted antenna patterns from the sun, even at high-elevation angles, are derived. The signal processing required to achieve high sensitivity for the antenna pattern measurements will be described. Important parts of the antenna pattern-for example, sidelobes-become visible when using long integration times. The polarimetric receiver channel cross-correlation coefficient is proposed as a figure of merit of the cross-polar isolation of the antenna and hence the cross-polar pattern. This paper documents the study of the radar signature of the sea surface on the images collected by an X-band weather radar and its application to remote sensing of the coastal zone. The main radar parameters considered here are the reflectivity factor [which was converted into a normalized radar cross section (NRCS)], the differential reflectivity, and the mean radial velocity. Measurements of the NRCS in the vicinity of an instrumented offshore buoy allowed for identifying its variations with wind speed and relative direction, which are found to be consistent with the Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) model and other measurements. A more accurate empirical model for the NRCS is developed. For moderate to strong winds, the mean radial velocity is linearly related to the radial component of the wind speed, showing the potentiality of weather radars to map the radial surface wind speed at the scale of a basin. The influence of surface currents is weak here but should be likely taken into account in other places with stronger currents. Measurements of the differential reflectivity are also consistent with other measurements made elsewhere for the polarization ratio. The analysis of radar data over the entire coverage could also be performed using surface wind estimates from a meteorological model. Similar but less accurate results are obtained for the NRCS and the mean radial velocity. The extra spatial variability not due to wind speed variations is identified. An inversion procedure is proposed to recover the wind vector field from radar measurements after calibration of the NRCS values. Detection of meteorological radar signals is often carried out using power averaging with noise subtraction either in the time domain or the spectral domain. This paper considers the relative signal processing gain of these two methods, showing a clear advantage for spectral-domain processing when normalized spectral width is less than ~0.1. A simple expression for the optimal discrete Fourier transform (DFT) length to maximize signal processing gain is presented that depends only on the normalized spectral width and the time-domain weighting function. The relative signal processing gain between noncoherent power averaging and spectral processing is found to depend on a variety of parameters, including the radar wavelength, spectral width, available observation time, and the false alarm rate. Expressions presented for the probability of detection for noncoherent and spectral-based processing also depend on these same parameters. Results of this analysis show that DFT-based processing can provide a substantial advantage in signal processing gain and probability of detection, especially when the normalized spectral width is small and when a large number of samples are available. Noncoherent power estimation can provide superior probability of detection when the normalized spectral width is greater than ~0.1, especially when the desired false alarm rate exceeds 10%.
