Two multispectral satellite imagery products are presented that were developed for use within the fire management community. These products, which take the form of false color red–green–blue composites, were designed to aid fire detection and characterization, and for assessment of the environment surrounding a fire. The first, named the Fire Temperature RGB, uses spectral channels near 1.6, 2.2, and 3.9 μm for fire detection and rapid assessment of the range of fire intensity through intuitive coloration. The second, named the Day Fire RGB, uses spectral channels near 0.64, 0.86, and 3.9 μm for rapid scene assessment. The 0.64 μm channel provides information on smoke, the 0.86 μm channel provides information on vegetation health and burn scars, and the 3.9 μm channel provides active fire detections. Examples of these red–green–blue composite images developed from observations collected by three operational satellite imagers (VIIRS on the polar-orbiting platform and the Advanced Baseline Imager and Advanced Himawari Imager on the geostationary platform) demonstrate that both red–green–blue composites are useful for fire detection and contain valuable information that is not present within operational fire detection algorithms. In particular, it is shown that Fire Temperature RGB and Day Fire RGB images from VIIRS have similar utility for fire detection as the operational VIIRS Active Fire products, with the added benefit that the imagery provides context for more than just the fires themselves. Significance Statement: The current generation of operational polar-orbiting weather satellites that began with the launch of Suomi NPP offers new capabilities with regard to fire detection and monitoring. In particular, false color red–green–blue composite imagery is now being used by fire managers, incident meteorologists, and others in the fire management community to visualize a fire's behavior and the context in which it occurs. This paper outlines two of these red–green–blue composites that have gained widespread use throughout the U.S. National Weather Service and the Alaska Fire Service. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to mitigate the so-called blind range on radars that use pulse compression. It is well known that the blind range is caused by the strong leak through into the receiver during the transmission cycle. The proposed technique is called progressive pulse compression (PPC) and is based on partial decoding. PPC uses a portion of the uncontaminated received signal in conjunction with pulse compression to estimate the echoes from the incomplete signal. The technique does not require the use of a fill pulse or any hardware modifications. PPC can be divided into three steps. The first step is to discard all the received signals during the transmit cycle and apply a smooth taper for continuous transition from zero to one. The second step is to perform the pulse compression using matched filter. The combination of these two steps is equivalent to performing pulse compression using a progressively changing template to partially extract the uncontaminated received signal for compression. The third step is to compensate for the progressively changing template so that proper reflectivity values can be recovered. This technique has been tested on the PX-1000 and will be implemented on PX-10k in the near future. These two radars are designed and operated by the Advanced Radar Research Center at the University of Oklahoma and are both X-band software-defined solid-state systems. In a previous work, a weather radar algorithm with low computational cost was developed to estimate the background noise power from the data collected at each radial. The algorithm consists of a sequence of steps designed to identify signal-free range volumes that are subsequently used to estimate the noise power. In this paper, we derive compact, closed-form expressions to replace the numerical formulations used in the first two steps of the algorithm proposed in the original paper. In this paper, a new objective typhoon positioning algorithm was proposed. The algorithm uses L1 12-channel far-infrared data of the FY-4A geostationary meteorological satellite for objective positioning, verified against best path data provided by the Tropical Cyclone Data Center of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). By calculating the tangential and radial perturbation values of infrared brightness temperature images, the perturbation factor can be obtained. By adopting the position of the maximum perturbation factor as the center of a circle and considering a radius of no more than 20 km, the position of the minimum perturbation factor was determined; this value represents the central position of the typhoon. Tropical cyclones in 2019 and 2020 were selected for objective positioning, and the objective positioning results were verified against the corresponding time in the best path dataset. The results included centralized verification results for 29 typhoons and optimal path data in 2019. The maximum average error reached 54.67 km, with an annual average typhoon positioning error of 16.15 km. The centralization verification results for 23 typhoons and optimal path data in 2020 indicated a minimum average error of 12.71 km, a maximum average error of 18.56 km, and an annual average typhoon positioning error of 14.82 km. The positioning results for these two years suggest that the longitude obtained with the perturbation factor positioning method is satisfactory, exhibiting an error of less than 20 km. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to help researchers make scientific discoveries and help the development of typhoon center location technology in the future. The response in [1] that the method used to determine cell thermal mass correction coefficients for SBE 41CP CTD data from Argo floats is biased as determined by [3] is valid. The alignment error manifests as a spike at 45.5 m and the cell thermal mass error manifests as lag in salinity response, such that practical salinity is reduced above base of the mixed layer at 45.8 m. Shown are (a) the salinity profiles, (b) the practical salinity error, and (c) the cumulative practical salinity bias. Nonetheless, minimizing the average practical salinity error in the binned profiles can serve as the second condition needed to determine the cell thermal mass correction coefficients to minimize bias in binned Argo data. During the summer of 2018, the upward-pointing Wyoming Cloud Lidar (WCL) was deployed on board the University of Wyoming King Air (UWKA) research aircraft for the Biomass Burning Flux Measurements of Trace Gases and Aerosols (BB-FLUX) field campaign. This paper describes the generation of calibrated attenuated backscatter coefficients and aerosol extinction coefficients from the WCL measurements. The retrieved aerosol extinction coefficients at the flight level strongly correlate (correlation coefficient, rr > 0.8) with in situ aerosol concentration and carbon monoxide (CO) concentration, providing a first-order estimate for converting WCL extinction coefficients into vertically resolved CO and aerosol concentration within wildfire smoke plumes. The integrated CO column concentrations from the WCL data in nonextinguished profiles also correlate (rr = 0.7) with column measurements by the University of Colorado Airborne Solar Occultation Flux instrument, indicating the validity of WCL-derived extinction coefficients. During BB-FLUX, the UWKA sampled smoke plumes from more than 20 wildfires during 35 flights over the western United States. Seventy percent of flight time was spent below 3 km above ground level (AGL) altitude, although the UWKA ascended up to 6 km AGL to sample the top of some deep smoke plumes. The upward-pointing WCL observed a nearly equal amount of thin and dense smoke below 2 km and above 5 km due to the flight purpose of targeted fresh fire smoke. Between 2 and 5 km, where most of the wildfire smoke resided, the WCL observed slightly more thin smoke than dense smoke due to smoke spreading. Extinction coefficients in dense smoke were 2–10 times stronger, and dense smoke tended to have larger depolarization ratio, associated with irregular aerosol particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multifractal fusion method has proved to be an effective algorithm to mitigate the noise of the sea surface salinity (SSS) of Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. However, the traditional nonparametric weight function used in this method is unable to fully capture the dynamic evolution of the oceanic environment. Considering the multiscale, nonuniform, anisotropic, and flow-dependent nature of the ocean, a prototype with the so-called flexible circle (FLC) weight function or flexible ellipse (FLE) weight function with a set of predefined parameters is proposed in this paper. The improved weight functions could draw dynamic information from the sea surface temperature, Rossby radius of deformation, and surface geostrophic flow to improve the quality of the remotely sensed SSS. The validation against the in situ data indicates that the improved weight functions perform better than the traditional one with a reduced root-mean-square (RMS) and standard deviation (STD) of the differences with respect to EN 4.2.0 profiles (from 0.50 and 0.46 to 0.42 and 0.38 for FLC and 0.39 and 0.36 for FLE in the global ocean). In particular, the FLE scheme could highlight the variation of the strong currents without affecting the computational efficiency. Uncertainties in aircraft inertial navigation system and radar-pointing angles can have a large impact on the accuracy of airborne dual-Doppler analyses. The Testud et al. (THL) method has been routinely applied to data collected by airborne tail Doppler radars over flat and nonmoving terrain. The navigation correction method proposed in Georgis et al. (GRH) extended the THL method over complex terrain and moving ocean surfaces by using a variational formulation but its capability over ocean has yet to be tested. Recognizing the limitations of the THL method, Bosart et al. (BLW) proposed to derive ground speed, tilt, and drift errors by statistically comparing aircraft in situ wind with dual-Doppler wind at the flight level. When combined with the THL method, the BLW method can retrieve all navigation errors accurately; however, it can be applied only to flat surfaces, and it is rather difficult to automate. This paper presents a generalized navigation correction method (GNCM) based on the GRH method that will serve as a single algorithm for airborne tail Doppler radar navigation correction for all possible surface conditions. The GNCM includes all possible corrections in the cost function and implements a new closure assumption by taking advantage of an accurate aircraft ground speed derived from GPS technology. The GNCM is tested extensively using synthetic airborne Doppler radar data with known navigation errors and published datasets from previous field campaigns. This paper describes the techniques used to obtain sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 12 (GOES-12) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution. Previous SST retrieval techniques relying on channels at 11 and 12 µm are not applicable because GOES-12 lacks the latter channel. Cloud detection is performed using a Bayesian method exploiting fast-forward modeling of prior clear-sky radiances using numerical weather predictions. The basic retrieval algorithm used at nighttime is based on a linear combination of brightness temperatures at 3.9 and 11 µm. In comparison with traditional split window SSTs (using 11- and 12-µm channels), simulations show that this combination has maximum scatter when observing drier colder scenes, with a comparable overall performance. For daytime retrieval, the same algorithm is applied after estimating and removing the contribution to brightness temperature in the 3.9-µm channel from solar irradiance. The correction is based on radiative transfer simulations and comprises a parameterization for atmospheric scattering and a calculation of ocean surface reflected radiance. Potential use of the 13-µm channel for SST is shown in a simulation study: in conjunction with the 3.9-µm channel, it can reduce the retrieval error by 30%. This paper describes a variational data assimilation algorithm based on the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) wave spectrum model. The approach allows single-point wave spectrum observations to be used to estimate the wave field for a nearshore region under stationary conditions, assuming a spatially uniform incident wave spectrum at the offshore boundary. The assimilated data are in the form of Fourier directional coefficients, the standard output from operational wave buoys, and are used directly by incorporating the relationship between directional spectrum and the Fourier coefficients into the formulation. The algorithm was tested on data from nearshore buoys deployed off the coast of North Carolina in May 2012, and the estimated wave field is compared to both the input data and independent observation data. The results compare favorably to the independent data with overall RMS errors of 10%-20% for significant wave height, about half a second for mean wave period, and as much as three to four SWAN spectral grid cells for mean direction. Overall, the results show that the algorithm can be effectively used to estimate the offshore boundary spectrum and accurately reproduce wave conditions in the domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The CSU-CHILL radar is a dual-wavelength, dual-polarization weather radar system operating at S and X bands with coaxial beams. One of the capabilities of this radar system is the possibility of developing and/or validating algorithms across dual wavelengths and dual polarizations. This paper presents one such instance, showing how the rainfall field can be estimated either from the S- and X-band reflectivities or from the differential propagation phase at X band. To do so, the paper first presents a dual-wavelength attenuation correction method that uses the reflectivity measured at S band, as the constraint for the correction of the reflectivity measured at X band, and it describes how Mie scattering regions at X band may be detected from the retrieved path-integrated attenuation field. Then, the paper describes how the resulting specific attenuation field relates to rainfall and specific phase at X band, which can be obtained from dual-polarization data at a single wavelength as well, and shows examples. Finally, the paper looks at the relation between attenuation and the differential phase as a function of elevation angle for a few cases, which may be related to the drop size distribution and mean diameter, as well as temperature. Polarization diversity radar measurements such as reflectivity factor, differential reflectivity, and differential propagation phase are extensively used in rainfall estimation. Algorithms to estimate rainfall from polarimetric radar measurements are based on a model for the raindrop shape as a function of drop diameter. Most of the current algorithms use an equilibrium shape–size model for raindrops. Variation of the prevailing mean raindrop shapes from an assumed model has a direct impact on the accuracy of radar rainfall estimates. This paper develops composite algorithms to estimate rainfall from polarimetric radar data without an a priori assumption about the specific form of mean raindrop shape–size model such as equilibrium shape model. The accuracy of rainfall estimates is evaluated in the presence of random measurement errors as well as systematic bias errors. The composite algorithms, independent of a prespecified raindrop shape model, were applied to radar parameters simulated from disdrometer data collected over 3 months, and the corresponding rainfall estimates were found to be in good agreement with disdrometer estimates. The composite algorithms were also tested with Colorado State University CHILL radar observations of the 28 July 1997 Fort Collins (Colorado) flood event. The storm total precipitation estimates based on the composite algorithms developed in this paper were in much better agreement with rain gauge estimates in comparison with conventional algorithms. Hydrometeor classification methods using polarimetric radar variables rely on probability density functions (PDFs) or membership functions derived empirically or by using electromagnetic scattering calculations. This paper describes an objective approach based on cluster analysis to deriving the PDFs. An iterative procedure with K-means clustering and expectation-maximization clustering based on Gaussian mixture models is developed to generate a series of prototypes for each hydrometeor type from several radar scans. The prototypes are then grouped together to produce a PDF for each hydrometeor type, which is modeled as a Gaussian mixture. The cluster-based method is applied to polarimetric radar data collected with the CP-2 S-band radar near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The results are illustrated and compared with theoretical classification boundaries in the literature. Some notable differences are found. The winding-angle (WA) method is an automatic eddy detection method based on the geometric characteristics of instantaneous streamlines. The original WA method clusters closed streamlines using a predetermined threshold. It is difficult to obtain a common threshold for accurately clustering various mesoscale eddies with variable shapes and dimensions. Moreover, the original WA method is not suitable for detecting multicore structures. In this paper, an improved WA method was proposed to more accurately identify mesoscale eddies and to detect multicore structures. It does not depend on the previously used clustering threshold; rather, it is based on the spatial relationships of streamlines to detect mesoscale eddies of various types and dimensions. Streamlines are matched with possible eddy centers (PCs), which are then grouped into different "related groups" according to the containment relationships between them and the outermost streamlines of the groups. Each group represents a vortex structure, and the number of PCs in each group represents the number of eddy cores. The eddy boundaries and eddy cores of multicore structures represented by multi-PC groups are identified by topological relationships of the streamlines. The time requirement of the improved method is higher than that of the original algorithm, although it does not demand additional memory space and utilizes fewer CPU resources. More importantly, the improved method provides more accurate identification results and greatly refines the incorrect identifications from the original method induced by the predetermined threshold. An assumption related to clouds is one of uncertain factors in precipitation retrievals by the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory. While an attenuation due to cloud ice is negligibly small for Ku and Ka bands, attenuation by cloud liquid water is larger in the Ka band and estimating precipitation intensity with high accuracy from Ka-band observations can require developing a method to estimate the attenuation due to cloud liquid water content (CLWC). This paper describes a CLWC database used in the DPR level-2 algorithm for the GPM V06A product. In the algorithm, the CLWC value is assumed using the database with inputs of precipitation-related variables, temperature, and geolocation information. A calculation of the database was made using the 3.5-km-mesh global atmospheric simulation derived from the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) global cloud-system-resolving model. Impacts of current CLWC assumptions for surface precipitation estimates were evaluated by comparisons of precipitation retrieval results between default values and 0 mg m−3 of the CLWC. The impacts were quantified by the normalized mean absolute difference (NMAD) and the NMAD values showed 2.3% for the Ku, 9.9% for the Ka, and 6.5% for the dual-frequency algorithms in global averages, while they were larger in the tropics than in high latitudes. Effects of the precipitation estimates from the CLWC assumption were examined further in terms of retrieval processes affected by the CLWC assumption. This paper proposes a new algorithm for parallel identification of mesoscale eddies from global satellite altimetry data. By simplifying the recognition process and the sea level anomaly (SLA) contours' search range, the method improves identification efficiency compared with the previous SSH-based method even in the single-threaded process. The global SLA map is divided into several regions. These regions are identified simultaneously with a new SSH-based method. All the eddy identification results of these regions are merged seamlessly into a global eddy map. A β-plane approximation is used to calculate the geostrophic speed in the equatorial band. Compared with the computation complexity of the previous SSH-based method, which is , the computation complexity of the new method is , where K is the number of threads and L is the number of regional SLA maps. When applying the new method to the global SLA map, the computation is ~100 times faster than the previous SSH-based method on an average computer. The new method characterizes an eddy structure by radius, amplitude, eddy core, closed SLA contour, and closed SLA contour with maximum average geostrophic speed. In situ data and another global eddy dataset are applied to validate the reliability of eddies detected by the new algorithm. Global eddy mean properties, variability, and the geographical distribution of both datasets are analyzed to demonstrate the performance of this new method and to help understand eddy activities on a global scale. Accumulating gridded fields over time greatly magnifies the impact of impulse noise in the individual grids. A quality control method that takes advantage of spatial and temporal coherence can reduce the impact of such noise in accumulation grids. Such a method can be implemented using the image processing techniques of hysteresis and multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT). These steps are described in this paper, and the method is applied to simulated data to quantify the improvements and to explain the effect of various parameters. Monitoring of precipitation using higher-frequency radar systems such as X band is becoming popular. At X-band frequency, weather radar signals are attenuated along their paths due to precipitation. A network-based reflectivity retrieval technique has been developed for the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) system, which is a radar network that can observe a weather event simultaneously by multiple radars. This paper describes the design and implementation of an architectural framework for real-time processing of the network-based attenuation correction system. The benchmarks presented here show that the system accomplishes networked attenuation correction within a few seconds, making it well suited for the CASA system. This paper presents the performance of the network-based attenuation correction system in terms of the metrics of attenuation correction as well as computational performance using CASA Integrated Project 1 (IP1) data during 2007--09 field experiments. Automated quality control is a necessity for meteorological measurement networks because of an ever-increasing number of measurements. One of the basic quality control tests is to check that the observations fall into a range of acceptable values. This paper proposes an algorithm for the automatic determination of maximum and minimum thresholds for such a test. The automated algorithm results in more statistically justified thresholds compared to the operator-fed values, which some quality control systems normally use. The suggested algorithm is a tuning-free method for the determination of daily minimum and maximum limits. The basis of the algorithm is, first, to collect the essential statistics of observations during their annual cycle and, second, to use these statistics to determine the acceptable observation range. This paper introduces a semirecursive version with lower computational requirements and discusses additional algorithmic details. A technique for calibrating digital cameras for stereo photogrammetry of cumulus clouds is presented. It has been applied to characterize the formation of summer thunderstorms observed during the Cumulus Photogrammetric, In Situ, and Doppler Observations (CuPIDO) project. Starting from gross measurements of locations, orientations of cameras, and landmark surveys, accurate locations and orientations of the cameras are obtained by minimizing a geometric error (GE). Once accurate camera parameters are obtained, 3D positions of cloud-feature points are computed by triangulation. The main contributions of this paper are as follows. First, it is proven that the GE has only one minimum in the neighborhood of the real parameters of a camera. In other words, searching the minimum of the GE enables the authors to find the right camera parameters even if there are significant differences between the initial measurements and their true values. Second, a new coarse-to-fine iterative algorithm is developed that minimizes the GE and finds the camera parameters. Numerical experiments show that the coarse-to-fine algorithm is efficient and effective. Third, a new landmark survey based on a geographic information system (GIS) rather than field measurements is presented. The GIS landmark survey is an effective and efficient way to obtain landmark world coordinates for camera calibrations in these experiments. Validation of this technique is achieved by the data collected by a NASA/Earth Observing System satellite and an instrumented aircraft. This paper describes development of a method for discriminating high ice water content (HIWC) conditions that can disrupt jet-engine performance in commuter and large transport aircraft. Using input data from satellites, numerical weather prediction models, and ground-based radar, this effort employs machine learning to determine optimal combinations of available information using fuzzy logic. Airborne in situ measurements of ice water content (IWC) from a series of field experiments that sampled HIWC conditions serve as training data in the machine-learning process. The resulting method, known as the Algorithm for Prediction of HIWC Areas (ALPHA), estimates the likelihood of HIWC conditions over a three-dimensional domain. Performance statistics calculated from an independent subset of data reserved for verification indicate that the ALPHA has skill for detecting HIWC conditions, albeit with significant false alarm rates. Probability of detection (POD), probability of false detection (POFD), and false alarm ratio (FAR) are 86%, 29% (60% when IWC below 0.1 g m−3 are omitted), and 51%, respectively, for one set of detection thresholds using in situ measurements. Corresponding receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves give an area under the curve of 0.85 when considering all data and 0.69 for only points with IWC of at least 0.1 g m−3. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that aircraft sampling biases resulted in a positive POD bias and the actual probability of detection is between 78.5% and 83.1% (95% confidence interval). Atmospheric visibility is an important element of meteorological observation. With existing methods, defining image features that reflect visibility accurately and comprehensively is difficult. This paper proposes a visibility detection method based on transfer learning using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) that addresses issues caused by a lack of sufficient visibility labeled datasets. In the proposed method, each image was first divided into several subregions, which were encoded to extract visual features using a pretrained no-reference image quality assessment neural network. Then a support vector regression model was trained to map the extracted features to the visibility. The fusion weight of each subregion was evaluated according to the error analysis of the regression model. Finally, the neural network was fine-tuned to better fit the problem of visibility detection using the current detection results conversely. Wolfson et al. introduced a storm tracking algorithm, called the Growth and Decay Storm Tracker, in which the large-scale features were extracted from radar data fields by using an elliptical filter. The elliptical filter as introduced was computationally too expensive to be performed in real time. In this paper, it is shown that although the elliptical filter is nonlinear, it can be decomposed into two parts, one of which is, under some simplifying assumptions, linear and shift-invariant. The linear component can be accelerated using fast algorithms available to compute the digital Fourier transform (DFT). Furthermore, it is shown that the nonlinear part can be written as an update equation, thus reducing the amount of computer memory required. With these improvements to the basic large-scale filtering technique, this paper reports that the large-scale filtering can be done 1-2 orders of magnitude faster. The predominant effect of rain on altimeter data is through the attenuation it causes of radar pulses propagating through it. Both the ERS-1 and TOPEX/Poseidon have recorded sharp decreases in the observed backscatter sigma[sup0], which have been attributed to rain events. However, the structure of rain cells and the spatial variation of rain rate can be much smaller than the altimeter footprint over which sigma[sup0] is calculated. Here an algorithm is derived to determine the rain rate and its spatial structure. This paper demonstrates that an unbiased estimator can be produced and shows the accuracy of its estimates through simulations of events of known magnitude and how the errors depend upon the accuracy of the assumptions used. Although only yielding information over a very narrow swath, rain structure and rain-rate information derived from altimetry could greatly extend records of precipitation over many areas of the oceans where little or no direct estimates exist. Routine processing of altimeter waveform data offers the prospect of a large dataset of high-resolution sections of precipitation patterns. This may be used to investigate the small-scale spatial structure of storms or in conjunction with other sensors to improve estimates of the global precipitation field. The Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere–Stratosphere–Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter (PANSY) radar is a large atmospheric radar located at the Antarctic Syowa Station (69.01°S, 39.59°E). The PANSY radar performed the first incoherent scatter (IS) measurements in the Antarctic region in 2015. Several specific observations were undertaken in 2017 including a 24-h observation of the ionosphere using a peripheral antenna array to suppress interference from the field-aligned irregularities (FAIs). This paper presents the preliminary results derived from the IS measurements using the PANSY radar and the adaptive signal processing techniques to suppress FAIs. The norm-constrained and directionally constrained minimization of power (NC-DCMP) algorithm was applied to the 24-h ionosphere observations by the PANSY radar with a weighting applied to the directional constraint based on the gain differences of the subarrays. When compared with the conventional nonadaptive approach, the number of usable power profiles was increased by about 24% by the gain-weighted NC-DCMP algorithm, suggesting its effectiveness for FAI clutter suppression in ionosphere observations. Furthermore, detection of FAIs using the dedicated antenna array was found valuable in assessing the reliability of estimations of electron density based on VHF-band IS radar data. In case of a release of a hazardous material (e.g., a chemical or a biological agent) in the atmosphere, estimation of the source from concentration observations (provided by a network of sensors) is a challenging inverse problem known as the atmospheric source term estimation (STE) problem. This study emphasizes a method, known in the literature as the renormalization inversion technique, for addressing this problem. This method provides a solution that has been interpreted as a weighted minimal norm solution and can be computed in terms of a generalized inverse of the sensitivity matrix of the sensors. This inverse is constructed by using an appropriate diagonal weight matrix whose components fulfill the so-called renormalizing conditions. The main contribution of this paper is that it proposes a new compact algorithm (it requires less than 15 lines of MATLAB code) to obtain, in a fast and efficient way, those optimal weights. To show that the algorithm, based on the properties of the resolution matrix, matches the requirements of emergency situations, analysis of the computational complexity and memory requirements is included. In its working state, the bit used in underwater horizontal directional drilling (UHDD) produces a high-frequency vibration that can affect accuracy of navigation. We designed a low-pass filter with linear phase on the basis of spectral characteristics of sensor data. To improve further the accuracy of navigation, we deduce the state error model on the basis of the random walk model of acceleration and angular velocity. We use an indirect Kalman filter algorithm to correct the attitude and position of the bit used with UHDD on the basis of observations coming from our working state analysis. Last, we derive a complete navigation algorithm function, including the acquisition method of steady-state component of acceleration and angular velocity. Experimental results show that the navigation algorithm proposed in this paper can obtain accurate attitude and location information of the bit in a vibration environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atmospheric gravity waves are a kind of mesoscale disturbance, commonly found in the atmospheric system, that plays a key role in a series of mesospheric dynamic processes. When propagating to the upper atmosphere, the gravity waves will disturb the local temperature and density, and then modulate the intensity of the surrounding airglow radiation. As a result, the presence of gravity waves on a moonless night can usually cause the airglow to reveal ripple features in low-light images. In this paper we have applied a two-dimensional Stockwell transform technique (2DST) to airglow measurements from nighttime low-light images of the day–night band on the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership. To our knowledge this study is the first to measure localized mesospheric gravity wave brightness amplitudes, horizontal wavelengths, and propagation directions using such a method and data. We find that the method can characterize the general shape and amplitude of concentric gravity wave patterns, capturing the dominant features and directions with a good degree of accuracy. The key strength of our 2DST application is that our approach could be tuned and then automated in the future to process tens of thousands of low-light images, globally characterizing gravity wave parameters in this historically poorly studied layer of the atmosphere. First-year ice has replaced multiyear ice in the Northern Sea Route area since 2008. In this area, sea ice survival during summer substantially depends on first-year ice thickness at melt onset, and thus monitoring of first-year ice thickness in the freezing period is a key to forecasting sea ice distributions in the following summer. In this paper we introduce a new algorithm to estimate flat first-year ice draft using brightness temperature data measured by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2). The algorithm uses a gradient ratio (GR) of 18- and 36-GHz vertically polarized brightness temperatures based on decreases in sea ice emissivity in higher AMSR2 frequency channels with thermodynamic growth associated with an increase in volume scattering. Such spectral characteristics of the emissivity are examined by comparing GR values with flat first-year ice draft extracted by mode values of in situ draft data measured by a moored ice profiling sonar. The accuracy of the daily draft estimated from GR values after applying proper noise filters is about 10 cm for a draft range of 0.4–1.2 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simulation of radar beam propagation is an important component of numerous radar applications in meteorology, including height assignment, quality control, and especially the so-called radar forward operator. Although beam propagation in the atmosphere depends on the refractive index and its vertical variation, which themselves depend on the actual state of the atmosphere, the most common method is to apply the 4/3 earth radius model, based on climatological standard conditions. Serious deviations from the climatological value can occur under so-called ducting conditions, where radar beams at low elevations can be trapped or propagate in a waveguide-like fashion, such that this model is unsuitable in this case. To account for the actual atmospheric conditions, sophisticated methods have been developed in literature. However, concerning the practical implementation of these methods, it was determined that the description in the literature is not always complete with respect to possible pitfalls for practical implementations. In this paper, a revised version of an existing method (one example for the above-mentioned 'pitfall' statement) is introduced that exploits Snell's law for spherically stratified media. From Snell's law, the correct sign of the local elevation is a priori ambiguous, and the revised method explicitly applies (i) a total reflection criterion and (ii) another ad hoc criterion to solve the problem. Additionally, a new method, based on an ordinary differential equation with respect to range, is proposed in this paper that has no ambiguity. Sensitivity experiments are conducted to investigate the properties of these three methods. The results show that both the revised and new methods are robust under nonstandard conditions. But considering the need to catch an elevation sign ambiguity in the revised method (which cannot be excluded to fail in rare instances), the new method is regarded as more robust and unproblematic, for example, for applications in radar forward operators. The nonlocal excess phase observation operator for assimilating the global positioning system (GPS) radio occultation (RO) sounding data has been proven by some research papers to produce significantly better analyses for numerical weather prediction (NWP) compared to the local refractivity observation operator. However, the high computational cost and the difficulties in parallelization associated with the nonlocal GPS RO operator deter its application in research and operational NWP practices. In this article, two strategies are designed and implemented in the data assimilation system for the Weather Research and Forecasting Model to demonstrate the capability of parallel assimilation of GPS RO profiles with the nonlocal excess phase observation operator. In particular, to solve the parallel load imbalance problem due to the uneven geographic distribution of the GPS RO observations, round-robin scheduling is adopted to distribute GPS RO observations among the processing cores to balance the workload. The wall clock time required to complete a five-iteration minimization on a demonstration Antarctic case with 106 GPS RO observations is reduced from more than 3.5 h with a single processing core to 2.5 min with 106 processing cores. These strategies present the possibility of application of the nonlocal GPS RO excess phase observation operator in operational data assimilation systems with a cutoff time limit. A new passive microwave rainfall retrieval algorithm for the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) that relies on an a priori database derived from matchups between TMI brightness temperatures and precipitation radar (PR)-derived surface rain rates has been developed. In addition to implementing a fairly conventional Bayesian approach to precipitation estimation, it exploits a dimensional reduction technique designed to increase the effective sample density in the database and also to improve the detectability of precipitation over problem surface types. The details of the algorithm itself are described in a companion paper. In this paper, the algorithm is validated against independent PR-TMI matchups from calendar year 2002. The validation results are benchmarked against results obtained for the same scenes from the current standard (version 7) 2A12 rainfall product for TRMM. Validation statistics considered include the biases, correlation coefficients, and root-mean-square (RMS) differences for annual precipitation totals on a 1° grid as well as two-threshold Heidke skill scores (HSS) for instantaneous (pixel level) retrievals, determined separately for each of seven surface classes, including ocean, coast, and five other basic land surface types as well as for cold (<275 K) and warm surface skin temperatures. Overall, the University of Wisconsin (UW) algorithm exhibits markedly reduced RMS error and bias in the annual total rainfall and markedly improved instantaneous skill at delineating light rain rates, especially over land and the coast. To ensure that the improved results were not due to both the training and validation data having been taken from the same calendar year, the validation of the UW algorithm is repeated using 2005 matchup data. Time-varying biases in expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments have emerged as a key uncertainty in estimates of historical ocean heat content variability and change. One of the challenges in the development of XBT bias corrections is the lack of metadata in ocean profile databases. Approximately 50% of XBT profiles in the World Ocean database(WOD) have no information about manufacturer or probe type. Building on previous research efforts, this paper presents a deterministic algorithm for assigning missing XBT manufacturer and probe type for individual temperature profiles based on 1) the reporting country, 2) the maximum reported depth, and 3) the record date. The criteria used are based on bulk analysis of known XBT profiles in the WOD for the period 1966-2015. A basic skill assessment demonstrates a 77% success rate at correctly assigning manufacturer and probe type for profiles where this information is available. The skill rate is lowest during the early 1990s, which is also a period when metadata information is particularly poor. The results suggest that substantive improvements could be made through further data analysis and that future algorithms may benefit from including a larger number of predictor variables. Over half a billion smartphones worldwide are now capable of measuring atmospheric pressure, providing a pressure network of unprecedented density and coverage. This paper describes novel approaches for the collection, quality control, and bias correction of such smartphone pressures. An Android app was developed and distributed to several thousand users, serving as a test bed for onboard pressure collection and qualitycontrol strategies. New methods of pressure collection were evaluated, with a focus on reducing and quantifying sources of observation error and uncertainty. Using a machine learning approach, complex relationships between pressure bias and ancillary sensor data were used to predict and correct future pressure biases over a 4-week period from 10 November to 5 December 2016. This approach, in combination with simple qualitycontrol checks, produced an 82% reduction in the average smartphone pressure bias, substantially improving the quality of smartphone pressures and facilitating their use in numerical weather prediction. The radar network of the German Weather Service [Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)] provides 3D Doppler data in high spatial and temporal resolution, supporting the identification and tracking of dynamic small-scale weather phenomena. The software framework Polarimetric Radar Algorithms (POLARA) has been developed at DWD to better exploit the capabilities of the existing remote sensing data. The data processing and quality assurance implemented in POLARA include a dual-PRF dealiasing algorithm with error correction. Azimuthal shear information is derived and processed in the mesocyclone detection algorithm (MCD). Low- and midlevel azimuthal shear and track products are available as composite (multiradar) products. Azimuthal shear may be considered as a proxy for rotation. The MCD results and azimuthal shear products are part of the severe weather detection algorithms of DWD and are provided to the forecaster on the NinJo meteorological workstation system. The forecaster analyzes potentially severe cells by combining near-storm environment data with the MCD product as well as with the instantaneous azimuthal shear products (mid- and low level) and their tracks. These products and tracks are used to diagnose threat potential by means of azimuthal shear intensity and track longevity. Feedback from forecasters has shown the utility of the algorithms to analyze and diagnose severe convective cells in Germany and in adjacent Europe. Convective storms cause several types of damage, including economic and ecological losses, every year. This paper focuses on an automatic hazard-level determination of convective storms based on a largely unused information source: real-time emergency report data. In addition to the location of the report, the emergency response centers classify cases into different emergency types and deliver a free-form verbal description of the incident for online use. This study uses archived weather-related emergency reports to determine hazard levels for convective storms detected by the weather radar. To develop an algorithm for estimating the hazard level of convective storms, a weather radar-databased convective storm-tracking algorithm was applied with a method that links reported emergency events to individually tracked convective storms. Based on the relationship between each convective storm track and an emergency report, the algorithm determines the hazard level of the storms automatically. Moreover, the developed algorithm takes into account the population density at the location of the report because, in densely populated areas, the flow of emergency reports is more intense. The proposed algorithm with case studies shows the potential use of real-time emergency call data in operational severe weather nowcasting and warning tools. This study demonstrates that supplementing storms with emergency information is advantageous, especially with long-lasting storms such as supercell storms or mesoscale convective systems. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for retrieving the ocean wind vector from marine radar image sequences in real time. It is presented as an alternative to mitigate anemometer problems, such as blockage, shadowing, and turbulence. Since wind modifies the sea surface, the proposed algorithm is based on the dependence of the sea surface backscatter on wind direction and speed. This algorithm retrieves the wind vector using radar measurements in the range of 200-1500 m. Wind directions are retrieved from radar images integrated over time and smoothed (averaged) in space by searching for the maximum radar cross section in azimuth as the radar cross section is largest for upwind directions. Wind speeds are retrieved by an empirical third-order polynomial geophysical model function (GMF), which depends on the range distance in the upwind direction to a preselected intensity level and the intensity level. This GMF is approximated from a dataset of collocated in situ wind speed and radar measurements (~31 000 measurements, ~56 h). The algorithm is validated utilizing wind and radar measurements acquired on the Research Platform (R/P) FLIP (for Floating Instrumentation Platform) during the 13-day Office of Naval Research experiment on High-Resolution Air-Sea Interaction (HiRes) in June 2010. Wind speeds ranged from 4 to 22 m s−1. Once the proposed algorithm is tuned, standard deviations and biases of 14° and −1° for wind directions and of 0.8 and −0.1 m s−1 for wind speeds are observed, respectively. A short-baseline weather radar network consisting of Ku-band broadband radars (BBR) for meteorological application is under development. The BBR is a short-range and high-resolution Doppler radar for meteorological application, whose range and temporal resolution are several meters and 1 min per volume scan, respectively and coverage is from 50 m to 15 or 20 km. A radar network consisting of BBRs is useful for rapidly and accurately detecting and analyzing small-scale weather phenomena such as localized scattered thunderstorms, tornadoes, and downbursts in locations with a complex topography such as urban or mountainous area. The BBR network project plans to deploy three BBRs in the north Osaka, Japan, area and to observe and analyzing small-scale weather phenomena in detail. At present, two functioning BBRs have been deployed in the Osaka area. This paper presents a description of the BBR network project and its preliminary assessment. Observations of the two-BBR test bed derive expected properties of the three-BBR network, which efficiently covers troposphere in the overlapped area with a minimum observable altitude of tens of meters and a sensitivity of 10.2 dBZ (spatial average at a 5000-km altitude). Integrated reflectivity and preliminary algorithm for multiradar products in the two-BBR test bed, presenting a promising fine structure of precipitation cells, is also shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the process used by the Marshall Space Flight Center Natural Environments Branch (EV44) to quality control (QC) data from the Kennedy Space Center's 50-MHz Doppler radar wind profiler (DRWP) for use in vehicle wind loads and steering commands. The database has been built to mitigate limitations of using the currently archived databases from weather balloons. The DRWP database contains wind measurements from approximately 2.7- to 18.6-km altitude at roughly 5-min intervals for the August 1997-December 2009 period of record, and the extensive QC process was designed to remove spurious data from various forms of atmospheric and nonatmospheric artifacts. The QC process is largely based on DRWP literature, but two new algorithms have been developed to remove data contaminated by convection and excessive first-guess propagations from the median filter/first-guess algorithm. In addition to describing the automated and manual QC process in detail, this paper describes the extent of the data retained. Roughly 58% of all possible wind observations exist in the database, with approximately 100 times as many complete profile sets existing relative to the EV44 balloon databases. This increased sample of near-continuous wind profile measurements may help increase launch availability by reducing the uncertainty of wind changes during launch countdown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cloud detection is a basic research for achieving cloud-cover state and other cloud characteristics. Because of the influence of sunlight, the brightness of sky background on the ground-based cloud image is usually nonuniform, which increases the difficulty for cirrus cloud detection, and few detection methods perform well for thin cirrus clouds. This paper presents an effective background estimation method to eliminate the influence of variable illumination conditions and proposes a background subtraction adaptive threshold method (BSAT) to detect cirrus clouds in visible images for the small field of view and mixed clear-cloud scenes. The BSAT algorithm consists of red-to-blue band operation, background subtraction, adaptive threshold selection, and binarization. The experimental results show that the BSAT algorithm is robust for all types of cirrus clouds, and the quantitative evaluation results demonstrate that the BSAT algorithm outperforms the fixed threshold (FT) and adaptive threshold (AT) methods in cirrus cloud detection. In an earlier paper by Wang and Hwang, a wave steepness method was introduced to separate the wind sea and swell of the 1D wave spectrum without relying on external information, such as the wind speed. Later, the method was found to produce the unreasonable result of placing the swell-sea separation frequency higher than the wind sea peak frequency. Here, the following two factors causing the erratic performance are identified: (a) the wave steepness method defines the swell-sea separation frequency to be equal to the wind sea peak frequency with a wave age equal to one, and, (b) for more mature wave conditions, the peak frequency of the wave steepness function may not continue monotonic downshifting in high winds if the high-frequency portion of the wave spectrum has a spectral slope milder than −5. Conceptually, the swell-sea separation frequency should be placed between the swell and wind sea peak frequencies rather than at the wind sea peak frequency. Furthermore the wind sea wave age can vary over a considerable range, thus factor a above can lead to incorrect results. Also, because the slope of the wind sea equilibrium spectrum is typically close to −4, factor b becomes a serious restriction in more mature wave conditions. A spectrum integration method generalized from the wave steepness method is presented here for wind sea and swell separation of the 1D wave spectrum without requiring external information. Obtaining stable and accurate satellite radiances for climate change research requires extremely high standards for satellite calibration. Many satellite sensors do not currently meet the accuracy criteria, especially heritage sensors such as the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), which shows scene temperature-dependent trends and biases of up to 0.5 K. Recently, however, a detailed study of the AVHRR/3 prelaunch data showed significant problems with both the calibration algorithm and the prelaunch data and indicated that the inherent accuracy of the AVHRR may actually be quite high. A new approach has been suggested that fixed many of the issues with the current (operational) calibration, but has not yet been applied to the in-orbit case. In this paper the behavior of the AVHRR in orbit is examined and compared to the operational AVHRR radiances from the Meteorological Operation ( MetOp)- A with those based on the new calibration to radiances derived from the Infrared Atmosphere Sounding Instrument (IASI). It is shown that the current AVHRR calibration does indeed introduce large (0.5 K) biases, but these biases are remarkably stable. It is further shown that, with some modification related to differences between the prelaunch test environment and the in-orbit environment, a physically based AVHRR calibration can match IASI to better than ~0.05 K, which is an order of magnitude better than what is currently available. Finally, it is shown that, while the new calibration is capable of providing accurate and stable radiances for the nadir view, off-nadir biases of up to 1.5 K still exist at the largest zenith angles and at the coldest scene temperatures (~210 K). For surface temperature determination, however, the scan angle bias is very small (<0.02 K), implying that the new AVHRR calibration will provide a significant improvement to, for example, sea surface temperature measurements, one of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS)-designated essential climate variables. This paper describes improvements to the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) land rainfall algorithm in version 7 (v7) of the TRMM data products. The correlations between rain rates and TMI 85-GHz brightness temperatures (Tb) for convective and stratiform rain are generated using 7 years of collocated TMI and TRMM precipitation radar (PR) data. The TMI algorithm for estimating the convective ratio of rainfall is also modified. This paper highlights both the improvements in the v7 algorithm and the continuing problems with the land rainfall retrievals. It is demonstrated that the proposed changes to the algorithm significantly lower the overestimation by TMI globally and over large sections of central Africa and South America. Also highlighted are the problems with the 2A12 land algorithm that have not been addressed in the version 7 algorithm, such as large regional and seasonal dependence of biases in the TMI rain estimates, and potential changes to the algorithm to resolve these problems are discussed. The Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellite was launched in April 2006 to provide global vertically resolved measurements of clouds and aerosols. Correct discrimination between clouds and aerosols observed by the lidar aboard the CALIPSO satellite is critical for accurate retrievals of cloud and aerosol optical properties and the correct interpretation of measurements. This paper reviews the theoretical basis of the CALIPSO lidar cloud and aerosol discrimination (CAD) algorithm, and describes the enhancements made to the version 2 algorithm that is used in the current data release (release 2). The paper also presents a preliminary assessment of the CAD performance based on one full day (12 August 2006) of expert manual classification and on one full month (July 2006) of the CALIOP 5-km cloud and aerosol layer products. Overall, the CAD algorithm works well in most cases. The 1-day manual verification suggests that the success rate is in the neighborhood of 90% or better. Nevertheless, several specific layer types are still misclassified with some frequency. Among these, the most prevalent are dense dust and smoke close to the source regions. The analysis of the July 2006 data showed that the misclassification of dust as cloud occurs for <1% of the total tropospheric cloud and aerosol features found. Smoke layers are misclassified less frequently than are dust layers. Optically thin clouds in the polar regions can be misclassified as aerosols. While the fraction of such misclassifications is small compared with the number of aerosol features found globally, caution should be taken when studies are performed on the aerosol in the polar regions. Modifications will be made to the CAD algorithm in future data releases, and the misclassifications encountered in the current data release are expected to be reduced greatly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today several lidar networks around the world provide large datasets that are extremely valuable for aerosol and cloud research. Retrieval of atmospheric constituent properties from lidar profiles requires detailed analysis of spatial and temporal variations of the signal. This paper presents an algorithm called Structure of the Atmosphere (STRAT), which is designed to retrieve the vertical distribution of cloud and aerosol layers in the boundary layer and through the free troposphere and to identify near-particle-free regions of the vertical profile and the range at which the lidar signal becomes too attenuated for exploitation, from a single lidar channel. The paper describes each detection method used in the STRAT algorithm and its application to a tropospheric backscatter lidar operated at the SIRTA observatory, in Palaiseau, 20 km south of Paris, France. This paper describes the implementation of the staggered pulse repetition time (PRT) technique on NOAA's research and development WSR-88D in Norman, Oklahoma. The prototype algorithm incorporates a novel rule for the correct assignment of Doppler mean velocity that is needed to accommodate arbitrary stagger ratios. Description of the rule, consideration of errors, and choice of appropriate stagger ratios are presented. The staggered PRT algorithm is integrated with the standard processing on the WSR-88D, some details of which are included in the paper. A simple ground clutter canceller removes the pure complex time series mean (DC) component from autocovariance estimates; censoring of overlaid echoes and thresholding are equivalent to those used on the WSR-88D. Further, a cursory verification of statistical errors indicates good agreement with theoretical expectations. Although the staggered PRT algorithm operates in real time, it was advantageous to collect several events of staggered PRT time series data for further scrutiny. National Weather Service Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) stations do not currently report drizzle because the precipitation identification sensor, called the light-emitting diode weather identifier (LEDWI), is thought not to have the capability to be able to detect particles smaller than about 1 mm in diameter. An analysis of the LEDWI 1-min channel data has revealed, however, that the signal levels in these data are sufficiently strong when drizzle occurs; thus, they can be used to detect drizzle and distinguish it from light rain or snow. In particular, it is shown that there is important information in the LEDWI particle channel that has not been previously used for precipitation identification. A drizzle detection algorithm is developed, based on these data, and is presented in the paper. Since noise in the LEDWI channels can sometimes obscure the drizzle signal, a technique is proposed that uses data from other ASOS sensors to identify nondrizzle periods and eliminate them from consideration in the drizzle algorithm. These sensors include the ASOS ceilometer, temperature, and dewpoint sensors, and the visibility sensor. Data from freezing rain and freezing drizzle events are used to illustrate how the algorithm can differentiate between these precipitation types. A comparison is made between the results obtained using the algorithm presented here and those obtained from the Ramsay freezing drizzle algorithm, and precipitation type recorded by the ASOS observer. The paper shows that by using data from the LEDWI particle channel, in combination with data from other ASOS sensors, the ability exists to detect drizzle with the current suite of ASOS instrumentation. Atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) are derived operationally at EUMETSAT from the AVHRR/3 instrument on the Polar System satellite MetOp-A since 2011. The launch of MetOp-B in 2012 allowed for doubling of the production of AMVs over the polar regions using both MetOp-A and MetOp-B satellite data. In addition to the single AVHRR polar wind product, in 2014 EUMETSAT developed a new global AVHRR wind product extracted from a pair of MetOp-A and MetOp-B images. This new product is extracted using the large overlap in the imagery data obtained from the tandem configuration of the two satellites on the same orbital plane but with a phase difference of about 50 min. The tandem configuration also provides the possibility to derive wind vectors over polar areas using a triplet of AVHRR images, keeping the same time period necessary to derive the single MetOp polar wind product but allowing for a temporal consistency check in the calculation of the AMV quality index. Three different AMV products are currently extracted from AVHRR imagery at EUMETSAT, using two or three images taken by one or two satellites having different coverage and time integration. This paper describes the scientific concept of the AVHRR wind extraction algorithm developed at EUMETSAT and presents the performances of the various AVHRR wind products. Intercomparisons of these different products highlight the role of the temporal gap between the images used to extract the wind and the impact of the consistency check on the calculation of the quality index. Adaptive range oversampling processing can be used either to reduce the variance of radar-variable estimates without increasing scan times or to reduce scan times without increasing the variance of estimates. For example, an implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening on the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased-Array Radar (NWRT PAR) led to a twofold reduction in scan times. Conversely, a proposed implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening the U.S. Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network would reduce the variance of dual-polarization estimates while keeping current scan times. However, the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening is not compatible with radar-variable estimators for which an explicit variance expression is not readily available. One such nontraditional estimator is the hybrid spectrum-width estimator, which is currently used in the NEXRAD network. In this paper, an extension of adaptive pseudowhitening is proposed that utilizes lookup tables (rather than analytical solutions based on explicit variance expressions) to obtain range oversampling transformations. After describing this lookup table (LUT) adaptive pseudowhitening technique, its performance is compared to that of the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening using traditional radar-variable estimators. LUT adaptive pseudowhitening is then applied to the hybrid spectrum-width estimator, and simulation results are confirmed with a qualitative analysis of radar data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a novel method for the automatic determination of the diagonal-loading level for robust adaptive beamforming on radar wind profilers. This method balances the degradation of the signal-to-interference ratio with that of the signal-to-noise ratio to maximize the detectability of the backscattered signals. Because radial wind velocities are usually estimated from the first moment of the spectrum of backscattered echoes, both the residual ground clutter and any increase in noise level degrade the detectability of atmospheric echoes. The proposed algorithm evaluates the power spectral density of the residual clutter and increased noise to determine the optimal diagonal-loading level by balancing these two factors. The results of numerical simulation show that, without the need to specify any user parameters, the proposed algorithm is stable and more effective at maximizing the signal-to-interference ratio than the conventional norm-constrained diagonal-loading approach. The stability and clutter suppression capability of the proposed algorithm are examined using data from the Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter Radar.
